The PhD student's vade mecum
This book is so tattered and torn from use in our laboratory. It's been an excellent reference for all of the students in the lab. It has great summaries of both actin and MT-based systems. It also includes helpful and concise diagrams and relevant micrographs. Although this isn't terribly new, it has great background for anyone studying in this field.

Fantastic gothic mystery for older youth and adults...
T.H. White (the author of "The Once and Future King") wrote this stunning little mystery in 1932, and it's a shame he never tackled any more, since he shows a quick and fluid mastery at the form. It combines two plot conceits: an ingenious locked-room puzzle, and a terrifying action plot (which resembles the twisted horror modelings the X-Files later used), and a thrilling denoument that most authors would give their eye-teeth for.

I first read it about 5 years ago, and was sucked right into the Holmesian atmosphere and vivid characterizations, but was dismayed when I found that the book was no longer in print, having last been published in 1977. Well, Hurrah! the story is back in print, and if you've been looking for an intelligent, creepy thiller to keep you awake at night, this is the book for you! Highly recommended.

Fictional "Yes" Accurate " all the way"
This story kept me going through the evening into the next morning. The book is a masterful work of story line and true to life events. The only way I can explain this book is, it is exactly like the new "Titanic" Movie!! It encompesses a fictional story with true to life events. A must read for liner buffs and W.W.2 vets!! * I am a liner buff-I collect big and small items, contact me.

A Cognitive Approach to Eating Disorders
This book is very heavily based on cognitive and rational-emotive therapy as a way to control emotions, and therefor destructive eating patterns. Dr. Sandbek talks about the differences between constructive negative emotions (like sadness) and negative destructive emotions (like depression), and their consequent constructive and destructive behaviors. You learn to recognize that destructive emotions come from distorted thoughts. He recommends taking all the ugly things one says to themselves and thinking of it as a seperate internal voice. Then you learn to argue with and defeat the "Voice." Dr. Sandbek also emphasizes time management and stress reduction techniques. On the negative side Dr. Sandbek doesn't appear to have an iota of a feminist perspective in him (at one point he recommends anorexics look Playboy so they can see how much thinner they are then women "men consider attractive"), which is startling considering how many women this disease affects. This isn't too much of a concern however, since clearly his intent is to help women overcome disempowering emotions and behaviors, with clinical proven cognitive tools.

The plot thickens
Episode 2 of the Deathstalker series really pulled me in. While episode 1 got things rolling with introductions episode 2 moves the story along at a nice pace. Owen and Hazel land on Mist World a last refuge for people wanted by the empire. As the title indocates they meet up with all kinds of friends, enemies and allies. A batch of new and interesting characters are introduced and join Owen Deathstalker and Hazel on their quest to bring down the evil empire. "Sounds familiar?" As i mentioned in my review of episode 1 this series borrows heavily from the Star Wars universe yet it is distinctive and does offer fresh plot lines of its own. As well there is a more adult flavouring to this series then Star Wars. Of course these books are geared for the male reader/listener in mind but girls will have no problem in enjoying them as well. Plenty of tough female characters abound. My favorite character however is Valentine Wolf, an aristocrat and one of the most colorful characters in this series. Simon Green has him as a sexually ambivalent man who on the surface seems so delicate but in truth is quite powerful and shrewed. His face is full of make up and the reader injects a bit of a stereo typical gay tone when narrating his part. Still, its a welcome addition to a genre that seems to be intrinsically hetero centric. In short, these books are full of action and I am hooked! This book contains 2 audio cassettes and is narrated by a cast of readers. There are sound effects and music as well to complement the narration.

A powerful play about love and despair
Terence Rattigan's play "The Deep Blue Sea" has been published in a solid edition by Nick Hern Books. This edition contains an extensive, thoroughly annotated introduction by Dan Rebellato. The introduction is divided into two parts: one focusing on the life and career of British playwright Rattigan (1911-1977), and the second focusing on the play (which had its British premiere in 1952) and its production history.

The play itself opens shortly after a suicide attempt by its main character, Hester. As the play progresses, Hester must deal with her troubled relationships: one with her estranged husband, a judge, and one with her lover, a washed-up, heavy drinking former pilot. There are a number of supporting characters, one of whom is hinted to be a homosexual.

"The Deep Blue Sea" is about love, secrecy, despair, societal conventions, and the need to find a reason to live after a great turmoil in your life. The play is moving, and has strong dialogue. Particularly intriguing is the way Rattigan questions the nature of love--how the concept may be different for different people.

The two-part introduction offers a fascinating perspective on Rattigan's life as a homosexual man during times that included "a major witch-hunt" against gays in Britain. Rebellato also considers the actual play in a gay literary context. My suggestion, however, is that you read the introduction AFTER reading the play, since it gives away much of the plot. Overall, this is a fine edition of a play that remains compelling.

Terry Dolan's Hiberno-English
This is a pioneering work which belongs on the shelf of any linguist, any student of Ireland, and anyone interested in gaining a knowledge of 'Irishness'. It is an invaluable source of knowledge and renders important insights into the state of the English language in Ireland. English, as Joyce described it, is both 'familiar and foreign' to Ireland; Terry Dolan's work demonstrates how the Irish have made what was once a colonial imposition a tool for their own use. This is a fascinating, detailed and original project, I recommend it with great enthusiasm.

A superb touching biography
This is one of the most touching and entertaining biographies since the master class of David Niven. Terence Stamp recalls the circumstances leading to his Oscar nominated film debut in Ustinov's 'Billy Budd' A film that laid the foundations for the groundbreaking performances that characterised his career throughout the sixties. The revelations of the book surround the actor's touching and honest accounts of his relationships with his Father, Micheal Caine and the love of his life Jean Shrimpton as appossed to his work with cinema greats like Fellini. A great read from a great actor and modest man.

Doubled And Venerable - Further Miracles of Card Play / New Edition

Very funny, a great read.
This is the third book in the Monks of St.Titus Bridge series. As with the earlier works, the book follows the exploits of the Bridge playing monks in England and also, it picks up on the adventures of their missionary outpost in Africa. As usual, the format concentrates on play rather than on bidding. Rather than being presented as pure puzzles, the play unfolds in a narrative style. This is doubly useful. There is an opportunity to treat each hand as a not too serious double dummy problem but also, it is quite possible to just follow the narrative and allow the authors to expose the solution.

A book such as this can be quite dry but the characters and situations spice things up with a good degree of wit. Even if you have read none of the other books in the series you will quickly become familiar with the characters and their foibles. This levening explains why these books are able to appeal to readers with a range of abilities from beginners so callow as to present this reviewer with an opportunity for victory up to those who deign to partner me once a year as a special favour.

The authors are to be commended on one matter in particular. The books in this series lose none of their sparkle even after you have read all of them more than once. They are very good indeed.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book for any bridge player and it would also make a great present for any bridge playing friend.

An amazing work outlining an exciting new product
This book gives a detailed look into the strategy behind a successful merger of medical science and the Internet. The author skillfully traces his product from an idea to a real-world business plan. Packed with insight and clearly written, the book can be used to build a knowledge base for the uninitiated in the business world, or to add to existing knowledge for the business expert. The author's writing reflects his depth of experience; he educates the reader on echocardiography (a field in which he is a pioneer) while incorporating freshness of idea and venue. Dr. Rafferty's book is amazingly thorough and concise, with new insights uncovered every time it is read. Echocardiography.org proved to be a fascinating look into the making of an equally fascinating company.
