An Original and Convincing Book
This book makes many original contributions to the study of Poe and his times. As I read through it, I began to understand what Poe must have felt as he struggled to make it as a professional writer. The book has something for everyone: capitalism, slavery, desperate acts of deception, and a fascinating link between Poe and Charles Babbage, who invented the prototype of the modern computer. I especially liked the fact that Whalen laid out convincing evidence--much of it new--instead of just making assertions. The book is not just an interpretation of Poe; it's really an attempt to recreate one of the most important moments in American cultural history.

A good review of new topics
This is a fine medium-advanced book on evolvable hardware. The book contains some of the very latest material you will be able to find available on print or in the internet. Specially, I find very interesting the immunotronics approach from the University of York staff.

Wonderfully eloquent
I am an aspiring chemist; this book has made it possible for me to explore many different organic experiments in a well planned out and careful manner. Jerry is a close personal friend of mine and I can personnaly vouch that he has dedicated his life to perfecting this manual. A masterpiece! If I could I would give this book a million stars out of five. Of an interesting note is the Acylation and Alkylation of Aromatic Compounds (Experiment #18). This three part lab is perfectly suited for the home chemistry lab as well as teaching your students to play with Chemicals. Uses chemicals availible through the Aldrich lab manual ranging from the relatively nontoxic to the volatile and flammable suspected carcinogens. Buy one for yourself and one for someone special you love!

The only thing that was (a little) disappointing was that the so-called "CD-rom" didn't actually have any music on it. I popped it into my car discman and no tunes. What's up with that? Maybe in the next edition...I'd recommend something from the Karate Kid soundtrack, maybe just use the hole thing. Word to your mother.

Fighting Judo
this is a review I found online and think it's quite accurate to my feelings. Get the book if you can find it at any cost.

Fighting Judo. Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki. Pelham Books, 1985. This is an inspiring book because, firstly, the photography in this book is matchless. No martial art book conveys the spirit of its art through photography better than this one. Secondly, its author is one of the premier grappling and sutemi waza specialists, and this book reflects his specialty. Thirdly, he is a bit of a philosopher, and it shows through in short sidebars throughout the book. His own story, in a brief chapter at the end, is inspiring, and shows that suffering, which is inherent in the sport aspect of Judo, produces a wisdom and a spirit and a character missing from those martial arts which dabble in the theory of movement without the suffering of defeat.

Beautiful artist's book
This is a gorgeous, large-format book full of intriging and inspirational art. The book is in itself an art object, with enigmatic diagrams, colorful designs, and clues to a mystery. The book is a major bargain at this price and will be of interest to both artists and general readers who are interested in art.

Once the action started it wouldn't stop!
I loved the way the author described the Freedom Express and their Howitzer appropriatly named the "Big Dick". Towards the end when the Freedom Express really looked like it was not going to make it was probably the best part of the book. And having the Ten Miles to Hell just added to the action. I think the author ended the book great with the last second cavalry charge by the 101 Airborne. I would recomend this book to anyone who loves the action to last to the last moment and the suspense to be killer.

A Fun, Concise Look at How We Got from the Old to the New
Anyone interested in the postwar world and how and when its rapid changes happened should read this highly entertaining, informative and concise book. The pictures are good too. This book shows how we got from Point A to a faraway Point B in the space of twenty short years. Although the book focuses on Great Britain, its tracing of the factors which formed the new world after the Second World War can be applied to the U.S. too. We learn about how the generations changed from that of the self-sacrificing Depression/WWII era to that of the me-first/consumer/drugs and rocknroll baby boomers - all in the space of 20 years. We learn how England rebuilt after the war, learn of the forces which shaped the changing attitudes of the new postwar generation, the rise of consumerism and leisure time, the cynicism that the draft, the Korean War and the atom bomb caused, the rise of rock and roll. The glory days of Swinging London are recounted. It is surprising to learn how much of those times were traded back and forth between England and the U.S. Whether you're a bonafide babyboomer (as I am) or simply want to learn more, this is the book. You would have to read a bunch of books to absorb the information this short, concise book provides. I loved it!
