One mistey morning, the Irish lost their freadom
Step by step the planned revolution unfolds. The Irish, preparing pikes, organizing, and plotting betrayal against themselves.

Treachery and battle. Summer soldiers is a sometines exausting account of the failed rebellion against the Ascendancy.

This really is a minute to minute account of what happened.

That is this books best quality. It's so detailed it's hard to really accept. But the footnotes are there, and they reveal not only a failed rebellion (that is still relevant to the IRA and the RUC) but the details of how mass planning under duress comes together....and falls apart.

Essential for any student of Irish HIstory. Essential for anyone who needs to understand the rebelious masses. Essential to anyone interested in contemporary Irish politics.

This was the event that created todays nightmare in Ireland.

Hang Ten!
Pretty good stuff. This 2 hour, 2 cassette set, recorded at California's Esalen institute, is a pretty good primer (or refresher, depending on what you bring to it) for both Joyce's Wake and McLuhan's theories. McKenna, while managing to stay well clear of a full-blown rant, shines an interesting psychedelia-flavored, history-along-with-human-consciousness-is-compressing-itself-into-a-nutshell light on the whole thing. So what exactly is here? On the Joyce side: a pretty in-depth analysis of the Wake's first five pages (much of this a distillation of Joseph Campbell's Skeleton Key). On the McLuhan side: a bare bones what-did-he-say-and-what-did-he-mean, with a little boy-did-we-drop-him-faster-than-we-embraced-him lament. The last word? It's about Joyce and by McKenna. How bad could it possibly be?

The Definitive Study
Elisabeth Brewer is a Medieval scholar and a White specialist. This work is chronologically arranged, so that she gives in depth infomation "by the book." Her research is impressive and illuminating. As a high school teacher, I find the work invaluable as a source of my lecture information. Her book is as much a psychological study of the author as an explanation of the text.

An exemplary biography of a gifted man
In Terence Rattigan: The Man And His Work, biographer Michael Darlow presents the personal history of one of the most successful dramatists of his generation. Despite attempts to declare Rattigan's work unfashionable, his plays were performed both on the stage and in the cinema. His prodigious body of work also included film screenplays, as well as scripts for both radio and television. A well known public figure in his lifetime, Rattigan kept his homosexuality private. Terence Rattigan: The Man And His Work is an exemplary biography of a complex, fascinating, influential, and gifted man who is secure in his recognition as one of the great dramatists of the 20th century.

A play for those who enjoy Roman theater
The commentary is very helpful as it explains words that may have different meanings in Latin prose. It also explains how the grammar is evolving at that point in Roman history. It is the best play that Terence has ever written and it is definitely worth reading it in the original language.

Terence: The Mother-In-Law (Classical Texts (Paper))
Published in Paperback by Aris & Phillips (1990)
Authors: S. Ireland and Terence
Amazon base price: $22.00
Average review score:

Funny, radical and entertaining
Won't bother with a typical review, the profs have said it all already. There's really only one important thing to point out -- that this play is still funny, still disturbing, still radical, and still entertaining. The plot twist at the end, which resolves the major conflict, is rather unsettling and leaves a bad taste in your mouth. But it's also so weirdly coincidental that, somehow, you accept it as a comic device. In fact, Joe Orton's "What the Butler Saw" has a very similar resolution, which suggests that Terence's plays are still highly influential.

Maybe if Terence were alive today he would be writing scripts like Pedro Almodovar. These two men, separated by 2000 years, have created the same outrageous, violent and sexual stories. I love "The Mother-in-Law" and it's certainly my favourite of Terence's works, though his collected plays are all worth reading.

Excellent Summary of Oregon History
"That Balance So Rare" is a perfect introduction to the history of Oregon. It can be used as a good general reference for scholars who need a starting point to further their knowledge of this State and region, even though it is accessible to all, and to readers of all ages. The well-written, informative and often humorous text is accompanied by dozens of lovely photographs and illustrations which really evoke Oregon's colorful past. O'Donnell focuses on the nineteenth and early twentieth century, as he correctly sees this period as the time when the political, economic and social features of modern Oregon were essentially defined. Also commendable is his treatment of the local Native Americans, who were pushed from their "garden of Eden" by successive waves of white settlement. Recommended reading for Oregon natives and anyone interested in learning more about this beautiful Pacific Northwest state.
