The Neapolitan Recipe Collection: (New York, Pierpont Morgan Library, MS Buhler, 19): A Critical Edition and English Translation
Published in Hardcover by University of Michigan Press (2000)
Authors: Terence Scully, Cuoco Napoletano, and Pierpont Morgan Library
Amazon base price: $55.00

A Jewel of a Book
A fantastic book for anyone interested in medieval or Renaissance cookery, the Neapolitan Recipe Collection is yet another masterly work by Terence Scully. Professor Scully, who is also the author of "The Art of Cookery in the Middle Ages," has translated the 15th century "Cuoco napolitano" into contemporary English; this edition includes the original receipts in medieval Italian, the English translations, and comments on the recipes. While no modern redactions are included, any competent cook should be able to prepare such dishes as Ravioli bianchi (White Ravioli), Caponi Inzucarati (Sugared Capon), & Torta de Riso (Rice Torte) by following Scully's instructions, as the recipe here for an omelet:

Egg Omelet. Get as many eggs as you wish, beat them thoroughly and add in a little milk to make it softer; similarly, add in a little grated cheese with a decent amount of salt, and cook it in good butter; garnish it with fine spices.

Some of the more incredible foods that are also included, such as a peacock that breathes fire and a stag that looks alive, will have to be considered for pure reading pleasure alone!

The translations follow the style of the original manuscript yet are still easy to read and simple to understand, while Scully's commentaries on all the recipes add depth that a mere translation cannot provide, and give the reader a vast insight into the background of the foods of this time period. The body of recipes itself contains a variety of dishes for pastas, vegetable, eggs, chicken, fish, meats, sauces, & sweets, and even has a section devoted to "Gastronomical Marvels." With the Neapolitan Recipe Collection, Terence Scully has produced a volume which needs to be included in the library of all modern cooks who study or practice historical cooking. It is, quite simply, a jewel of a book.

optimality theory and features
I would like to recommend this book to the readers who are interested in optimality theory . I'm preparing for my dissertation on the features and optimality theory. I couldn't find good papers which deal with the features on the basis of optimality theory. The chapter "optimality and features" by pulleyblank accounts for a wide range of phonological features by the interaction of constraints. Within OT framework, he gives an idea of phonological representations and resolves the complexity of featural phenomena by the ranking between faithfulness and the conflicting constraints. Though this book lacks specific examples, the contents are quite satisfacory to get an overview on OT

Sobriety is More than just Healing the Damage
Abstinence from alcohol and other drugs is only the beginning of sobriety. It's the ticket to get into the theater, not the movie we are going to see." -- Passages through Recovery

One of the most important things we learn in recovery is that there really is a way out of all the misery -- if we know which way to go. But abstinence from alcohol and other drugs is just the beginning of our journey, not our destination. And, that journey can be a rough one if we don't know what lies ahead.

Passages through Recovery clearly demonstrates that sobriety is more than just healing the damage. "It's a way of thinking, acting, and relating to others, "Gorski writes, "That promotes continued physical, psychological, social, and spiritual health. The skills necessary for long-term sobriety are all directed at finding meaning and purpose in life."

Use this book as a compass in your recovery to help you stay on course.

Required Pauline Reading and Highly Recommended!
Donaldson sets out on an ambitious enterprise: to reexamine Paul's conception of the role Gentiles should be given and what their relationship to Judaism should be. Drawing upon an impressive range of scholarly work from Luther to Schweitzer to Bultmann to the history of religions school to E.P. Sanders, the author offers a way beyond the traditional scholarly renderings of Paul's mission and core convictions. The traditional way placed judicial language of faith and works as central; it saw Paul's Damascus experience as a turning away from Judaism to the Gentiles; it understood "Israel" in Romans 11 as nonethnic and universal. Donaldson calls into question all the old assumptions and, to put it crudely, puts the Jew back into Paul. This is an outstanding book and I believe will be referred to as the standard for understanding Paul's relationship to the Gentile world for many years. I highly recommend it. Thomas Jay Oord

Excellent introduction
This volume is an excellent thematic/theological introduction to the Torah. Historical-critical issues, while assumed, are not a major focus of this book, and are addressed specifically only insofar as they are necessary for a discussion that is largely thematic and theological. Fretheim offers a solid proposal for reading the Torah as a unity within the framework of several governing themes, viz., promise, creation, et. al. His insights along the way are fresh and inspiring in a field that can all too often digress into technical concerns alone. The strength of this book lies in its articulation of major theological themes that govern the entire narrative of the Torah, and in its subsequent proposals for reading the individual books with these themes in mind. Very highly recommended for anyone engaged in this field of study at any level.

The most inspirational book besides the Bible
This poem is one of the most beautiful things I have ever read. I am not a specialist in Middle English, so I cannot say what was lost in the translation into Modern English. I have a copy of the B-Text version which is in Middle English, and if you are like me and have no background therein, this is definitely the version to possess.

It was written circa 1380 and gives an excellent account of life in Plantagenent England and the behavior of the people. The money economy was relatively new, and he saw the negative effects that it had upon both the secular authorities and the Church. The poem is written as an allegory in which the author tries to reconcile the needs of human society with satisfying our Lord our God. Similar to Pilgrim's Progress, the author has a vision, in which he is encounters different aspects of humanity (Covetousness, Sloth, Soul, Knowledge, etc.) on his attempt to find Truth (or God). It is definitely not light reading, and there is so much deep thought that one has to spend a lot of time reading it slowly, as I am sure it was done in the 'Middle Ages'.

The author thought that End Times were near after the Black Death and the utter corruption amongst secular and clerical authorities at the time. The fact that something so penetrating and inspirational was written and found such an appreciative audience that it has survived till now shows that the society then was not so bad. Highly recommended.
