The Facts on File Encyclopedia of World Mythology and Legend

A "must have" guide for writers of mytholgy and legend.
An excellent, straight-forward guide to who's who in world mythology, complete with illustrations. I couldn't have written my book without it! However, it does not give a complete listing of all lesser gods, fairies and other devine entities. Only the better known ones.

A first class look at the mythology!
Something that has always peeked my interest is the stories of ancient gods and the legends of past. The book covers those topics and many more. The amazing entries in this encyclopedia by Anthony Mercatante is nothing short of amazing.

From A to Z you'll find interesting clips about different gods, goddesses, myths, legends, heroes and villains. You find Roman, Greek, Norse, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian traditional portraits of gods, saints and demons all in this 800 plus page book.

Assembled is the most complete set of entries I have ever seen. Am impressive list with an even more impressive explanation of each entry. The author has really done his homework with book. This would make an excellent reference manual for every student and teacher.

Check out Facts on files website for more books in all kinds of categories. While this book is a little on the pricey side, I assure you, you'll be hard pressed to find any book that even comes close to this one, this one is in a class by itself.

One of the most excellent resources available
Clearly, one of the most concise resources on the subject available. Layout was very good, with defined entries that would help both those serious students of mythology and folklore and the casual observer equally.

Perhaps the best thing to say about this particular resource is that it attempts to present a concise point of reference for the more famous aspects of mythos and legend over the entire span of world culture. The book is not as concise with specifics as some would like, but it does provide a factual representation based upon analysis of the folklore rather than popular culture's influence, and that in itself is worth the price.

Collins' writing brings machines and spacecrafts to life
If you've ever read Michael Collins' "Carrying the Fire," you owe it to yourself to get a copy of "Liftoff."

In "Liftoff," Collins relates the history of NASA's spacecrafts and the people who created them. The best aspect of his story is that it is not a timeline of spacecraft A, spacecraft B, spacecraft C, etc. "Liftoff" is an appreciation of the clunky Mercury capsule, the complex and triumphant Apollo spacecrafts, the grace (or at least relative grace) of the space shuttle, and so many other NASA innovations.

Partnered alongside the machines are the early NASA pioneers who envisioned them. Collins lets you in on the aims behind their designs. He also writes about these men as professionals, some of them visionaries, and others just nuts-and-bolts engineers.

So "Liftoff" is a great read for what it is and what it is not. It is not a NASA history with the adventure, drama, and action of space flight (although that is often very exciting to read). Instead, it is a technical book for non-technical readers, a NASA history for non-space buffs, and a personal story about machines.

After reading Collins' "Carrying the Fire" and "Liftoff," I believe that no other author has ever written as well about NASA. Only Andrew Chaikin has come close with "A Man on the Moon." Collins transcends what an astronaut can say about space travel, and he does it with humor, an almost poetic fluidity, and the perspective of someone who was there.

History of NASA Taken To New Heights!
Fantastic! Michael Collins really knows how to write! He turns non-fiction material into a real page turner. I learned a lot from this book. It is well organized and includes a U.S. manned spaceflight log at the end. This book not only provides information about NASA from Mercury to the shuttle but also includes information on military research with aircraft predating the space program and how NASA itself was formed. Collins' own expeirience as an astronaut makes the book even more exciting. The first chapter is a detailed firsthand account of the Apollo 11 flight, the first mission to land on the moon, upon which Collins was a crew member. Later in the book he writes a similar type of account about his earlier Gemini 10 flight which involved an EVA (spacewalk). The illustrations are also beautiful. James Dean does a good job capturing the essence of space exploration in his detailed sketches. If you know nothing about NASA and want to learn, it's time to read this book!!! -Roxana Safipour

Wonderfully illustrated book
I rarely look at a book for its pictures, but in "LIFTOFF" the illustrations are fabulous! I remember seeing this images reproduced in the exhibit "You Are Here, _Wondering_ Through the Solar System" at the Austin Children's Museum... by far the best part of that exhibit!

Unleashing a Ceramic Art Movement
There have been other books and journal articles written about this remote Mexican village, but with the publication of "The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz," a more comprehensive exposure is given to the talented artisans living there. No longer will Americans snub their noses at the Made in Mexico country of origin trademark. The incredible pottery of Mata Ortiz has done much to dispel the notion of Mexican art as being inferior to American art.People the world over can now appreciate the beauty of the works that are produced in the village since the book clearly shows the artists with full-size colored photographs of their creations. In addition, but not less important, the authors introduce us to the potters in such a personal way that we can't help but feel an attachment to them and to their lives. We also learn of the historical importance of the ancient Casas Grandes ruins from which Juan Quezada, the founder of the movement, first explored and experimented. This nearby pre-Columbian city was an important trading center from Mesoamerica to the Southwest and was noted in the 12th to the 15th centuries for its high quality pottery production. Now, people will have a greater understanding of the connection between the tribes of Mexico to the tribes of the Southwest. This book has it all and is most welcomed by experts and collectors alike.

The Many Faces Of Mata Ortiz
This is the best pottery book I have ever found! It is layed out in an informative, and beautiful manner. Not only is the pottery exquisite, but the photographs represent the pieces at their best. It is easy to understand, and gets one passionate about an art movement, that we can actually be a part of, in this twenty-first century. It is highly unsual to be living during a time when a new art movement is going on, and still striving for it's pinnacle. We see this with the unequalled workmanship of the Matiz Ortiz people in their Casas Grandes/Matiz Ortiz pottery. I really enjoyed getting to know each potter by name and photo, coupled with seeing their work, and feeling a part of their extended family. Juan Quesada, the founder of this artistic movement, is a highly spiritual individual, generous and gifted beyond belief. He is the reason that this wonderful pottery is being shown to the world. I am an artist that does pottery, and a retired teacher. I would recommend this book to all art teachers, and anyone who appreciates great art.

BeauBeautiful photography of sublime pottery and artisans
This book was my introduction to the world of the artisans of Mata Ortiz, Mexico, and their amazing ceramic creations. While the decorative motifs and other aspects of the pottery were familiar to me, I found that the photography, which I suspect was done with specialized "light painting" techniques, brought out the form, texture, and pattern of the pieces with wonderfully rich detail and nuance. The images were clearly created by a photographer who was very intent on rendering a physical, tactile sense of the objects she was recording. Coupled with other photographs of the artisans at work, and the surrounding Mexican landscape, the book is a compelling portrait of both the people who create the works of art and the art itself.

One path to learning mathematics
Ambivalence surrounds me when I attempt to review this book. As someone who learned arithmetic in the pre-calculator days, many of the ideas in this book bring back deep memories. One of my favorite things to do when in my teen years and later was to keep track of the items in the grocery cart and estimate the total cost. It was considered a failure when the guess and true total differed by more than $0.25. While this skill did succeed in amazing people, I cannot recall a single instance where it actually was financially beneficial. And eventually I gave it up, going on to mathematics and computers.
But those days are gone, and calculators (computers) do free the mind for other things. So the question becomes, is it beneficial to read books of this type and learn the "lost" art of estimation? The history of mathematics informs us that early mental manipulation of numbers is a strong indicator of the future development of mathematical ability. Gauss and Hardy are two excellent examples of this. However, in later years Hardy in particular looked down on those who were mere number crunchers.
Which leads to the clearest use for the techniques demonstrated in this book, namely to instruct children in the mental manipulation of symbols. By having young minds compete against a calculator, mental techniques are developed that most likely cannot be created any other way. And those methods are excellent training for future careers in the quantitative sciences. And this book does an excellent job in introducing these "tricks." All are clearly explained and detailed solutions to the problems are in the back of the book. Anyone wishing to learn how to perform efficient mental computations will find what they are looking for.
If your goal is to teach or learn how to perform calculations in your head, then this book is for you. However, one should make an effort to keep everything in perspective. The ability to perform mental arithmetic should be considered as a step toward mathematical ability and not a stand-alone indicator of such skill.

Una pequeña joya
He encontrado el libro muy útil , entretenido , y facil de leer.
Muy recomendable para iniciarse en el cálculo mental.

Truly amazing
A truly amazing insight into various ways to mystify others with seemingly impossible mathematical challenges. Learn how to determine the day someone was born on, or guess the missing number in the answer to a multiplication problem. This book provides you with insight to the fun (yes... fun) side of math. You will be greatly impressed by the tricks to amaze your friends and make math interesting

Very helpful book for in-depth study of New Testament
Craig Keener is a very good scholar. His use of source material (primary and secondary) is very judicious and sound. I have always wanted a book that tried as much as possible to avoid giving interpretation, but instead focused on background customs and "everyday" perspectives of the peoples of the first century. This book does just this. However, one cannot entirely avoid interpretation in a volume like this. Still, Keener's work will help you get more out of your Bible study and it will help you avoid esoteric explanations of the Scriptures. This book is especially good for those who are weary of commentaries. Thanks again to Keener for the work put into this book.

A unique resource
Finally, here's all the stuff I always wanted, but could never get in the notes of a study Bible. Keener's book is 831 pages of double-columned passage-by-passage commentary, readable but never "dumbed down." "Background" refers not only to history, but to society, culture, and everyday life, and the book is both interesting and illuminating.

IVP is an overtly Christian publisher, which might make some readers, those who want objective scholarship, wary. It need not. The vast majority of this commentary is concerned with documented fact. Not all, of course. Some events are matters of controversy among historians -- for example, Herod's "slaughter of the innocents," which is mentioned by no other document than the Gospel of Matthew, and which many scholars think never happened. But, on checking the relatively "liberal" HarperCollins Study Bible, I find this isn't mentioned there either, which indicates that the verdict is still out, and that Keener has acceptable reason for taking Matthew's word on the subject. If the objectivity question bothers you, you could use Keener's book in conjunction with an ecumenical study Bible, such as HarperCollins or New Oxford Annotated. But this volume seems, to me, to be that rare book that both faith-based Bible readers, and objective scholars could love.

My biggest complaint is that, while the binding and paper are high quality, the paper is heavy & the binding stiff. It will not open flat for easy back-and-forth referral between it and the Bible text you're using.

Other than that, it's a wonderful piece of work on all counts.

Pastors must get this book!
This book does an awesome job of digging and ferreting out the important cultural nuances of the New Testament. It sheds light on even the more notoriously difficult passages. This book will save the busy pastor time and money. And it rewards close reading.

It's the thought that counts...
Michael Chacon, et al give a good attempt to easy your studying for the 70-218, Managing a Microsoft Windows 2000 Network Environment. However, this edition is riddled with obvious errors. Nearly half of these errors are contributed to poor wording (i.e. When you boot a DHCP client for the first time... listens for a lease offer , and chooses one it likes." page 98 -- DHCP clients cannot choose anything. They accept the first address that they receive. The other half are just errors (i.e. "Even though IIS is built into Windows 2000 Server, it is not installed by default." page 712 -- oh yes it is, and you should be aware of that with all the IIS hacks lately. However, the authors are quick to respond to these errors when brought to their attention and Sybex does a great job of making the corrections available on their website. Overall, the book makes a fine attempt to get you skilled in Windows 2000 network management. My only suggestion would be is not to use this book as your only source.

The standard
THere are a few things I would change with this book, but, like the other Sybex/Chellis/Donald certification books, these are the standard. This MCSA exam covers a wide swath of topics, so take it last. You'll see a lot of overlap. Know group policies. I even saw and active directory question on the exam, and was a bit surprised. The book did a good job preparing me in general.

All you need and more to pass your exam
This book cover everything you should know before attempting to pass the 70-218 exam assuming that you already study and passed the 70-215 exam. It goes beyond the scope of the exam in the area of intra and inter-site active directory replication (at least for the exam that I passed) but it helped me to understand the overall concept. The explanations are simple but effective (not lile the microsoft book).I also used the sybex tcp/ip jumpstart book who is very good at explaining the concept of subnetting.

Excellent, portable quick reference to HTML 3.2
The main things that I like about this book is that it is small, light-weight, and easy to find things in. I carry it in my briefcase, so that I can use it at home, as well as at the office. There is nothing so far that I have needed to know the syntax of that I haven't found right away in Hip Pocket Guide. It is not a thorough, in-depth reference to HTML, but it is just the thing when you can't remember the format or allowable attributes of an HTML tag.

I will be purchasing the HTML 4.0 version.

Small, quite good, not perfect.
Good indexes and some accurate guidance. Mostly it is great. The authors seem to be more familliar with the extensions from Microsoft than Netscape. It seems somewhat incomplete for example: Netscape 3.0+ supports WIDTH and HEIGHT attributes of INPUT TYPE=Image and can scope FONT around H3 and OL neither of these are listed.

Handy reference for all web page authors
Rather than haul around some massive tome on web page authoring, get this handy spiral-bound guide to all the popular supported HTML tags. They're all listed alphabetically with syntax and rules. Navigator- and IE-specific information is clearly identified. I use Microsoft Front Page to develop the initial drafts of my pages, and then use this book to clean out the extra garbage so that both Navigator and IE users can use them. This book is a good value for programmers.

A great story but lacking a strong finish.
A very entertaining read that caught my eye and I couldn't put it down. Pratt weaves a unique story of love, life in the 50-60's and Vietnam. I found the story to be a real page turner and Pratt's simple but effective prose worked wonders. The life of Levi especially during the war was very well done and the characters were colorful and personable yet also innocent at times. The story itself is a compelling tale yet unrealistic at times the story reads extremely fast. I ploughed through it in a couple hours and I am not a fast reader. Each page kept me going. My only problem with the story was it's Hollywood style happy ending. Filled with grief, mourning, and hardships throughout I was shocked to see that in the end Pratt briefly wraps it all up in a simplistic manner and over the course of only a couple pages. had the ending been more realistic and thoroughly portrayed I would have given it a 5 star rating.

Clean, Heartfelt, and Touching Romance
Absolutely a must read for those hopeless romantics that enjoy shedding a tear here and there. As always, James Michael Pratt touched my heart through his story of Paradise Bay. The characters in his stories are so life-like and portray deep emotional feelings, as real-life so often does. He creates his characters and shares their innermost thoughts so that by the time you are just pages into his story you can almost feel yourself as one of the characters themselves. I picked up his first book, The Last Valentine, in paperback at a local store several years ago. . .since then, I anxiously anticipate his next arrival! He goes on my "best reads" list with Nicholas Sparks, Kristin Hannah, and Debbie Macomber. His books are fit for anyone to read--very clean and heartful! Don't miss out!

Paradise Bay
When I saw this book, I did judge it by the cover, and I thought it would be a pretty good book. So checked it out from the local library and read it. I have to say, I couldn't keep it down, I kept reading till I was done. This book keept me reading from cover to cover. This is an amazingly written book, the idea and plot is unthinkable. This book is worth reading, infact it's worth owning. It would be a pleasure to read it over and over again, which is why I reccomend this book. Rating this book five stars was a mistake, it should be ratied ten stars or a hundred stars, or infinity stars. So if you are looking for a fantastically-great-full of adventure-never put down to stop type of book to read, I more than recommend this book.

Not Worth 5 Stars!
This is my first time reading up on Oliver Stone, or any other director for that matter.

I found this book very well written and an enormously entertaining read. The author not only gives a keen insight into what Oliver Stone is about and how he works, but the book also gives a good basic overview of how movies get made and the inner workings of Hollywood. After reading this book, I gained a new respect and appreciation for all the tremendously hard working people involved in getting a story onto the big screen.

I give the book a 3 star rating because the author didn't stay true to his topic. The first half of the book was much more revealing (and interesting) than the latter half. It worked really well from up to around the end of the Platoon era. After that it seems like the book tapers off. Besides, I find it hard to believe that you can find more details and insights into Stone's early life, when he was a nobody, than you can into his later life where he is among the biggest directors in Hollywood and a much revered and outspoken public figure.

A Complete Guid to Stone
This is a must for any Stone fan. It is a complete history of Oliver Stone; from his birth into a wealthy New York family, to driving a cab for $30 dollars a night, to the set of JFK. It gives us a compelling insight into what created one of America's greatest and important film makers and social critics.

The best book I read on a director yet !
This book really takes you into the mind of Oliver Stone. It really gets in their an shows how he directs ,and what the actors and his peerers think of his work.

Not quite what I expected
This book serves as a good introductory to .NET Reflection. The book doesn't cover the Reflection.Emit class which is primarily what I was looking to learn about. I am some what disappointed.

Buy it NOW!
The book comes with an 'excellent' set of real world examples, solutions and a lot of information you simply can't do without! If you're interested in 'really' unleashing .NET's true power, this book is just what you need! Once you're done with it, you'll wish the book never ended :) Yes, it's THAT good!

Very enjoyable and well worth the[money]
One of a growing series of books, this is the second that I'd picked up and even better than the first one (which was the Remoting). This book covers reflection in all its glory - giving all the details that we need to use reflection to the full. Where the book stands out from others is that it not only gives the technical details but also puts all the examples into a real world situation giving an insight into why we're using reflection in the first place. Definitely worth the [money] ...
