Instructional Media and Technologies for Learning
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (16 July, 1998)
Amazon base price: $63.87
Average review score:
Nice update of a classic textbook
As a co-author, I can report that Instructional Media upholds the tradition established by this textbook in 1982. It is aimed primarily at those who are at the entry level in terms of using media for education or training. It helps instructors decide what media to use for different teaching/learning situations, and gives practical tips on HOW to achieve the best effect when using technology. The book began with a focus on audiovisual media; the sixth edition retains the most relevant audiovisual content, but shifts focus toward computer-based delivery. What remains constant is the conviction that effectiveness of mediated instruction depends very much on what the instructor does...how the technology is integrated into the overall learning program.
Invisible Children: Who Are the Real Losers at School?

You'll never look at them the same way again.
James Pye inspired me in 1995 when I was studying education as part of my teacher's training. I borrowed the book accidentally - I was looking for material for an essay and grabbed practically everything on the shelf, hauled it all down to a level more suited to my stature, and started flicking through the tomes looking for anything that might help me inform my lecturers about kids with special needs. I flicked Invisible Children open and started reading the first page. I couldn't stop reading. I eventually had to force myself to put it down in order to continue with the canvass for relevant texts, but you can be sure that I borrowed it that very afternoon, and the other ten books remained unread while I grazed my way through Invisible Children. As a new teacher, the simple truths of James Pye's book were a revelation to me. I found myself expanding my view of all of the children in my classes - underachievers, quiet well-behaved kids, attention seekers, all of them. James Pye's book helped something click into place for me and helped me find my teaching vocation.
James Pye's introduction to his book summed up teaching for him and for myself also. In the Introduction he related an anecdote about visiting a brother who had a child. James sat there reading the paper or a magazine and without thinking found himself reading bits aloud and pointing out interesting stories to his niece. Eventually she commented that he was just like her Dad, always sharing stories with her.James said that he realised that he was in teaching because of his innate love of learning and language, and his desire to share that with others, especially children. James Pye, if you ever get the chance to read this, Thank You for giving me the gift of realising that what I have always wanted to do is to pass on my love for the things that interested me when I was a student. We went to Ireland (summer 2001) and every month brought back wonderful memories. The calendar photos are fantastic. We also brought a calender in Dingle but this calendar is much better.

James Stirling, Michael Wilford (Studio Paperback Series)

Mesmerizing
Few Americans are familiar with James Stirling's work which is a shame. He was one of the three or four great high-tech architects. Maybe not as high-tech as Rogers or Foster yet maybe more intuitive and with more feel. His work also had a post-modern flair. He was a few years ahead of some of the most famous architects of today and if you look closely enough at Stirling's work you may notice how they all may have been influenced by Stirling. The book itself is a good representation of his work but the photos are somewhat small and in black and white. The book gets 5 stars because Stirling was a master.
Kaleidoscope: Reading in Education
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin Co (2000)

Kaleidoscope gives you the full spectrum
Kaliedoscope does the opposing viewpoints journal and essay writing approach very well. The articles are clustered into related fields with well written essays by professionals in the the mix of the issues in education and a few well known voices from the academic researchers to balance it out. The articles all kept me engaged due in part to the volitile nature of of the subjects addressed and the fact that they provoked a strong sense of either agreement of disaproval in either case. This book is a must read for new teachers that are trying to feel out the issues they will be facing in the classrooms and on their school campuses.

Keeping Score: Measuring the Business Value of Logistics in the Supply Chain
Published in Hardcover by Council of Logistics Management (1999)
Amazon base price: $70.00
Average review score:
Now we know what the near future is: What is next?
The book can be read by any level of readers, may be considered a initiator for the junior logistics managers, while senior managers may use it to update their knowledge with the recent developments in logistics. The book gives good inside about establishing the logistics criteria (K.P.I.s) as well as being a good reference for researchers. It has sufficient amount of statistical data supporting the information provided and the results are integrated with the subjects neatly. I have enjoyed reading it, and found it quite useful for my research and company project.

Succinct and Relevant
Alexander and Lyons have outlined a strategy for service organizations to shift (their) historical models of selling that will place any organzation ahead of customer demand and expectations. An awesome transformation will take place for the company that applies "the Knowledge-based" blueprints to actually create demand and stop the wasteful "reactionary sales methods" that are most common today. Great Resource!

The Leadership Gym
Though considerably biased as one of the authors, I have asked countless students (leadership course at the graduate level), professors and industry leaders to review this book and provide feedback. The vast majority have indicated a strong consensus that it is an excellent basic guide to entry level and mid-level managers who are in search of tools and techniques to enhance their skills in leading people.
These same tools and techniques that are defined in the book, plus many others, are part of the curriculum in the Project Management Master of Science Program at the University of Texas at Dallas. The evaluations have been particularly good and for that, I thank my co-authors, Tom Berliner and Rob Van Til...two of the brightest minds and down-to-earth approaches to leading people that I've ever encountered.
Thanks for your time...
