Defending America: The Case for Limited National Missile Defense
Published in Unknown Binding by Brookings Inst Pr (E) (2001)
Authors: James Lindsay and Michael E. O'Hanlon
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

A persuasive and fascinating case
In Defending America: The Case For Limited National Missile Defense, authors James Lindsay and Michael O'Hanlon collaboratively offer cogent and practical recommendations on building an effective missile defense system. Their suggested plan requires a critical change in the 1972 ABM Treaty and highlights the so-called "boost-phase interceptors" for land, sea, or air. Preferring extensive research and development efforts to a system rushed out the door, these authors make a persuasive and fascinating case. Those who disagree with their views are even more highly encouraged to read Defending America, for it is substantively important to know all sides of the debate over this controversial, critical, and contemporary national issue.

Dreamy real life story of escape from the chains of conventi
Banfield a Newspaper man and his wife escape conventional lifestyle and settle Beautiful Dunk Island off the north Queensland coast (Australia). This is a book for those who work and live in the urban jungle, It leads the imagination to delight in the simple and uncomplicated existence we all at times long for, but haven't the time to discover. Their abode (Dunk Island) is now a millionaire's playground. However, the cottage and surrounds that Banfield established are preserved as part of a National Park. This book is a good read. I am sure all that read it will be tempted to visit the area it portrays. I know I did. It was and is a wonderful tropical paradise.

An excellent way to teach science
My son used his own money to purchase this book and he really enjoyed it. I grew up reading the Spider Man comics and so I also read it. It is a combination of the description of the powers of Spider Man and how he obtained them and a list of facts about spiders. This is an interesting and effective way to teach children science. While he was reading it, he would come up to me with questions like, "Daddy, did you know spiders . . . ?"
Written at a level perfect for the later elementary school child, this book teaches science in a unique and interesting way. I strongly recommend it.

Excellent collection by political Activist and Scholar...
DUTIES, PLEASURES and CONFLICTS is a fine collection of essays and short stories by Jamaican-American political activist and scholar, Michael Thelwell. Thelwell is the author of the justly reputed novel, "The Harder They Come" based on the more widely-known cult film. In these essays Thelwell's experience as a Civil Rights organizer in Mississippi, and a founder of SNCC (The Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee; later to be transformed by its more radical chairman, Stokely Carmichael into The Black Panther Party) is brought to bear in some eloquent commentary on the nature of the early 60's civil rights movement in the deep South. His excellent, powerfully ironic short story, "The Organizer" (about a Klan bombing of a church and the "pragmatic" decision by Organizers to capitalize on the tragedy by manipulating its "shock-stock" in the National media) is also included. The quality of writing in these pieces warrants the observation that Thelwell's superb command of irony illuminates rather than masks or trivializes insights into the the battle for humanity and freedom for men, women and children of all races and ethnic backgrounds. The book is graceful and literary without dry pedantry. It is also "living literature"...not a PC tract or shrill political manifesto. The last essay...."God aint Finished with Us Yet"... concerns the presidential campaign(s) of Jesse Jackson. Here a bluntly vitriolic tone does occasionally overwhelm Thelwell's characteristic skill in understating what he may, in fact, regard as most urgent and attention-deserving themes. To readers who might be critical of this final piece as lacking the grace evidenced in the other, demonstrably excellent essays and stories comprising the collection, author Thelwell might retort...to both Democrats and Republicans alike..."So what! Look at...ponder if your sensibilities permit...what you've got running for President now..." Or maybe not. Thelwell is writing what is proposed as the definitive biography of Stokely Carmichael...who repudiated his western/Christian name to assume the name Kwame Ture. I have seen a substantive draft of this work-in-progress and assure the reader that the story of this well-known (loved, despised or dismissively ridiculed) civil rights leader deserves to be read. Thelwell's "DUTIES, PLEASURES, and CONFLICTS," makes it manifestly evident that he is the man to tell this story and make it accessible and moving to any reader interested in intelligent, political discourse.

Great book for beginning ranch realtors
Book is in three parts, marketing, finance, and management. I really liked the management part because I don't have any ranch backround. Good reference for marketing because it seemed to be tuned in to the type of people who would be buying a ranch, for whatever reason.

Simply the best volume ever written on the Presidency....
Accessible, well-written, and utterly compelling history is loaded with facts and dates, but more than that, this book places each president in the context of his times. Therefore, we come to understand the era itself; with the policies, debates, and legal questions fully explored.
