Inspirational
This book inspired me to move forward with what I feel is God's call on my life. If you have confusion about reconciling what you feel God is calling you to do because you are a woman, this book will help you see your way clear. Cindy Jacobs combines solid scriptural research with humor and personal testimony to lead the reader through the issues of the taboo of women in the ministry - as well as many other women in Christianity issues. Very readable.

Thoroughly Written
I loved this book. It has been my desire to find out what my destiny in this life is. This book was a wonderful start as it gave insight on what a woman's destiny.

Cindy Jacobs really lays things out in clear view for you to grasp and understand. It is biblically based. She also has her own personal testimonies interwoven in this book.

This book was a gift from my sister. I will cherish it always. If you are wondering what to do or how to go about finding out what your destiny is, get this book. It has truly blessed me.

Delightful menu of truth
This is a special treat from Cindy Jacobs. Cindy's bold approach is not to encroach the male domain, but to reposition women roles to where they should belong in the Body of Christ. She, tactfully, defends the spiritual rights of women, giving classic examples of past and present generals of God who have changed the biased views of women role in the church.

She scores great in her personal testimonies. Her transparency and candor will open up more balance voices in today's marketplace where gender is always an issue. Fortifying her conviction with biblical scriptures, Cindy invades the draconian wall of today's belief that women has no place in the House of the Lord.

This book will gag the mouth of those who fight only for their selfish interest. Many like to interpret the biblical scripture according to their one-sided experiences or singular cultures. So you can see how the expansive meaning of the scriptural text was truncated by the lack of depth in interpreting by ignoring the biblical culture and environmental context when the scripture was first penned. However Cindy cleverly treat the situation by responding with well research and cognitive facts.

Cindy's contents is a healing to wounded female who have been kept backstage for too long. In the same tone, this book also alludes that women when co-exist and co-labor along with men will bring the church potential to the maximum that God intended.

So let's take the saddle off the women, they are going places !

Jacob's Magic Box - Toys
Great book for pre-schoolers. My child loves Jacob and all the toys. Great for teaching kids to put things away when they're through playing. Love the entire series.

Innovative and Stimulating
Great interaction for children. Everyday objects that children can relate with. Encouraging curiosity and stimulating the mind.

Jacob's Magic Box Discovery Series - Toys
A delightful little book where Jacob's Grandma shows him all kinds of toys. The story is written in wonderful and creative rhyme and appeals greatly to pre-schoolers. My grand-daughter is 2 1/2 and is enthralled with this book as well as the entire series. One of her favorite toys is Mr. Turtle - an extremely cute little fellow. The art work is creative and eye-catching for young ones. The book is highly interactive and captivating. It teaches that everything that comes out of the Magic Box goes back into the box at the end of the story which is a great teaching tool for putting things away at the end of play time. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to create an exciting learning environment for their young children.

El Cuervo/Raven: The Untold Story of the Rev. Jim Jones and His People

This is "the book" about Jim Jones
This is not a quick/cash in book by some wanna-be, we are talking about a well-crafted piece. Furthermore, aside of being extremely well written and researched, the work shed some light into the psychology of cults. I believe that Raven can help us understand and eliminate many "Jim Joneses" that plague our world culture.

Well done Reiterman/Jacobs hey what's up! Mr. Publisher, this book cannot be out of print.

Excellent account of the Jonestown Massacre.
Well written, unbiased account of the Jonestown Massacre by someone who was there when it happened, and knows how to write. I was wide awake for the last 300pp sacrificing sleep just to get to the end of it. It helps explain how and why 912 innocent people died at the instruction of their leader, Jim Jones.

Raven: The Untold Story of Jim Jones and His People
The story of Jim Jones and Peoples Temple was the basis for my Master's Thesis. Reiterman's text was indispensible in that pursuit. As a prior reviewer states, it is an indispensible warning which should be read and understood by all people. But more importantly, this story has a very current importance in that Charles Garry, one of the lawyers for Jim Jones, was a partner with Robert Treuhaft. Treuhaft and his wife, Jessica Mitford, are avowed communists. Treuhaft has spent his entire career advancing the agenda of the Soviet Communist Party and the KGB according to historian, Stephen Schwartz.

What then makes this a current story of importance is that Hillary Rodham Clinton accepted a summer internship in Treuhaft's Berkeley,CA law firm during the summer of 1971. Even though she knew quite well that his firm was a leftist firm, it held no problems for her.

Additionally, since 80% of the people who died in Guyana on November 18, 1978 were Black, it adds credibility that liberals will allow minorities to die if it can show them as some sort of minority victim.

The story of Peoples Temple is a precursor to the story of Hillary Rodham Clinton's political thrust and as such, should be considered for reading. I agree, it's a shame it's out of print.

Reiterman takes the reader through the history of Jones's cult with an eye for detail and the precision of a seasoned writer. He shows how Jones was sexually perverted, committed to the destruction of the family, and willing to kill people for a cause which had gone sour long before the move to Jonestown. I highly recommend this book for reading.

excellent results with a gifted ten-year-old
The question last summer was, "What next, for a younger child who's mastered all pre-algebra mathematics?" Was it too soon for algebra? And could a parent who hadn't seen algebra in the last twenty years help the child cope? We ordered Harold R. Jacobs' text, encouraged by reviews mentioning self-study, and began work in the fall, prepared to stop any time if the child found it difficult or stressful. Quite the contrary, it was mentally very stimulating -- the lessons took us carefully from familiar arithmetic concepts to equivalent algebraic content, and presented each new subject one very manageable bit at a time. It was exciting to watch skills developing, and to see the child's enjoyment and growing sense of competence. The little cartoons and often-intriguing Set IV exercises added fun and interest throughout, and made it easier to keep going, especially during those mid-school-year doldrums. This book was perfectly suited to our schedule, which allowed only three lessons per week, after school -- we needed only about half an hour per lesson at first, then near the end, about an hour and a half. We're looking forward to Jacobs' Geometry book next year!

A Great Approach for Teaching Algebra
I homeschool my kids & have taught them through geometry so far, including Algebra I for two of them, using the Saxon series, which we've liked for the most part, but haven't liked as much for the later grades than for the earlier (say through about 7-6). I've started with the third child using Jacobs instead, since he seems to present many topics in a more understandable way, at least a more visual way. He also structures the problem set in each lesson exclusively to deal with the topics of that lesson, rather than using a spiral review method or other method that presents problems from lots of previous lessons. This makes for more concentrated treatment of the lesson at hand, which the third child likes more. Jacobs's method of presenting is, as I said, more visual, with helpful diagrams and graphs that illustrate the point of a lesson. My favorite is his use of a two-dimensional matrix to illustrate multiplication, and later division, of polynomials. The step by step addition of information to the matrix illustrates the steps and the concepts of polynomial multiplication and division quite well. I'm looking forward to using this book with this child and having it available for the others for reference on topics on which they need refreshers.

Outstanding Problems but tenth grade reading level
Jacobs' book has a lot of really good, interesting problems to do, and that is the most important thing in a math book. The probems are unsurpassed by any other Algebra book that I know of.

I bought 7 copies of this book so far for people who are self-teaching this Summer. Or at least half-self teaching, because the reading level is a little high (many large words). Some people have a spouse, parent, sibling, or frient who are helping out by reading some of the problems to the self-learner, without doing them.

It would be good to come out with a version of the problems in this book with, say, a seventh grade vocabulary to open it up to people whose reading skill is not that high yet. This would SEPARATE the reading work from the algebra work.

In the end, of course, one must master language in order to master math. In the beginning, however, it is still good if one has the motivation to self-learn some Algebra, even before becoming am master-level reader.

Prodigal Genius: The Life of Nikola Tesla

Biased, but still a good book
The reporting of Tesla's life is biased to report the good, and gloss over the errors. Despite this, it is still a very good book, a great insight to a great inventor. The comparison of methods with Edison is interesting. Tesla's ideas were all his, and Edison use lots more experimentation. According to the book. Treat with an once of salt. Still excellent material though.

This book is an experience that will change your life.
Here is a story of a man born in the glorious womb of science, a man who so completely understood the laws of nature and the scientific method that he commanded total dominion over the physical universe.

Once you read this book you will find it difficult to name an aspect of modern life that hasn't been affected by the hand of Nikola Tesla.

Some of Tesla's ideas were so far ahead of his time that to the people of his day, they were considered impossible; his vision of the world of the future was mocked and laughed at even by other scientists. Over time scepticism about the possibilities of science and technology has waned. Unfortunately for us the world was not yet ready for Tesla, this man out of time, and he died with his greatest achievments alive only in his mind.

Inspiring book -- great for kids or adults!
I read this book in April 1945, just after it first appeared. A fantastically inspiring book for me, then a 14-year-old would-be genius. It nourished me intellectually and emotionally for five years -- until I outgrew it. The author was science editor for the New York Herald Tribune, but like so many Tesla enthusiasts today, was uncritical of Tesla's theoretical ideas, neither recasting them in today's language of physics, nor criticizing them where they are clearly wrong (or wrong-headed). Still, it's a book scientifically-oriented folks should read.

Great book
Brothers Divided by Eli Jacobs

Jon Warren, New York Times bureau chief in Jerusalem finds himself in the middle of a civil war. Religious vs. secular, right- wing civilians vs. left-wing civilians. He is wanted to work for a secret government group called Brothers Division. And in the mean time the Iranians are plotting to kill millions of Israelites by tricking them into killing each other and when the time is right they will launch a missile and destroy the state of Israel. So back in Israel Jon is trying to prevent civil war by figuring out who is causing all of the trouble. And then suddenly Jon finds a thread sticking out of the sweater that will unravel the whole thing.

I recommend this book to children with large vocabularies because this book is very complicating and a little hard to understand. I would also recommend this book to any person over the age of 12. This book, I give this book five stars.

A Great Thriller -- for old folks too!
I purchased this book in Jerusalem (03/24/02). What a great thriller. I found myself as tense in places as I was when I read The Red October by Tom Clancy. After reading the book I noticed that inside the front dust jacket it reads: Ages 10-14. Don't believe it. Read this book and look forward to the next two books of a promised trilogy.

Timely and Thought-Provoking
This is one of the best suspense/action novels concerning Israel that I have read. I did not want to put it down. The book also provides a vivid description of modern Israeli society and its internal tensions. After reading this novel, I felt that I had gained some insight into this strategic and often misunderstood country.

Look at the pictures
This childrens' story book is illustrated with reproductions of Jacob Collins paintings. This book is a treasure because of these illustrations! Collins is one of foremost living realist painters. With respect to technique, he is getting up there with the likes of Odd Nerdrum and his paintings sell in the five figures last time I looked -- probably much higher now. The two portaits of women in this book are incredibly valuable for anyone who aspires to paint in the realist tradition -- or anyone who loves painting. Because it's a "story" book, this little volume costs a lot less than an art monograph, and what a treasure. Wish the images were larger, butmay-be one day we'll get a book on Collins.

The Christmas Candle
If you are a person who reads books to school children, this is a perfect book to read. It is the best holiday book with true meaning I have read, that teaches children to look in their environment to find ways to be helpful, and the true meaning of the holidays, that we are all one large family of mankind. You will not be disappointed in purchasing this book. Beautiful illustrations and a moving story.

I LOVE this book!
I love this book so much. It is truly a story for all ages, and it is deeply profound and moving. To me, it is the perfect book, with perfect illustrations!!!!!!

Civilization of Renaissance Italy

The Ciivilization of the Renaissance in Italy
A better book could not have fallen into my hands! An American professor in Venice recommended it, and after I read it I was only sorry I had not read it before going to Italy. The mystery of its medieval, rather Renaissance cities (Florence, Venice, among others) would have been clearer; even today's Italians' ways and personality. So much a product of Renaissance Italy...and its wonderful heritage from Ancient Rome. I truly recommend this book for Italy lovers, anyone going there soon, or for the sheer joy of reading a good history book. Jacob Burckkhardt is one of the most intelligent, enlightened historians I know.

Opens our eyes to the origins of our own world
I was around twelve when my grandmother mentioned having heard a speech delivered by Woodrow Wilson.

For me, until that moment, Woodrow Wilson had been in the same category with Julius Caesar: people who lived a long time ago. But for my grandmother, only Caesar could be in that category: Wilson was an early contemporary of her own. I began to realize that the citizens of the past were real people, that the lives of the past were lives as large and rich and strange as our own.

Everybody who survives high school can remember at least one teacher who made the study of history look like a matter of memorizing names and dates. Such teachers often manage to create in their students a permanent allergy to the study of history. But it has been two hundred years since they could do so with a good conscience.

Voltaire was the first modern writer of history--we might say, the first historian of culture. Chiefly through his masterpiece The Age of Louis XIV, he established the principle that history is not just about who ruled when and who killed whom--that it is about all the aspects of human culture, all the means--arts and entertainment, philosophy and religion and science, as well as economics, politics, and war--by which we seek to create permanent triumphs of mind over the natural forces of chaos and entropy.

We need not fool ourselves: those forces will finally destroy us and all our works. But while we live, we can make life richer for ourselves and for those who will follow us. The writer from whom I first learned that historical writing could be such an enriching force was Burckhardt.

The Renaissance was indeed the modern rebirth of ancient culture, but what makes it important is that through that rebirth people rediscovered a truth that the ancient Ionians had known and that had been lost sight of for more than a thousand years: that the natural world, and people as part of it, were worthy objects of study and understanding--not just creatures and tools of God. With this discovery, made permanent because it could now be broadcast by the new technology of printing, begins the process of modernity--the process that still continues to increase our world's psychological distance from the ancient and the medieval world.

The Man Who Invented the Renaissance
Jacob Burckhardt had one of those rare minds who could construct a new synthesis out of thought, government, art, and culture -- and who, for the first time, made it possible to talk about the Renaissance as a moment in the history of Western man.

This is a very dense work with flashes of genius as well as long scholarly footnotes with extensively quoted Italian and Latin. In a book by a dullard, this would be excruciating. But Burckhardt is anything but as he manages his material like a Moscow taxi driver: by accelerating and then coasting. When you least expect it, another epiphany draws you in.

Burckhardt's Renaissance was an incredible high in the history of mankind. The Medicis, Sforzas, and Malatestas strut their way through the history of the period; Dante, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Bramante create works of the imagination that still overpower us; popes like Julius II, Alexander VI, and Leo X combine worldliness with spirituality (sometimes); and even the average man has a face and a voice for the first time.

This book will make your blood race.

A sweet tale of love found at the holidays
Reviewed by Kelley Hartsell for Love Romances

Libby McGuiness is a single mother, doing her best to be a good parent to her young hearing impaired daughter, Meg. Between owning her own hair salon and taking care of Meg, she has no time for anything else, let alone getting involved in a relationship. Everyone she knows doesn't agree with her though, and keep trying to fix her up with every "nice young man" they know.

Dr, Joshua Gardener grew up in Erie, PA, before heading off to go to med school. He decides to return home in the wake of his recent divorce to set up a small practice and start life anew. The last thing he wants to even think about is getting involved in a relationship with a new woman.

Libby and Josh's first meeting was far from pleasant, starting over a parking space, so why can't either of them get the other out of their minds? Josh is annoyed by Libby's prickly attitude, but senses there may be something far different underneath. When the two of them are conned into co-chairing the town's annual Christmas party, they are thrown into close contact - too close for Libby's comfort. Sparks fly from the get-go though, and both find themselves looking forward to their "business" meetings.

But Libby is nervous. Every other man she has tried being with, including her ex-husband, runs when they learn of Meg's disability. None have been able to handle the challenges unique to raising a disabled child. She is afraid Josh will do the same, so therefore she won't allow herself to get too close, knowing he will be gone from her life come Christmas. Josh isn't going anywhere though. He wins Meg's affection almost immediately, growing extremely attached to the delightful child, and in so doing he just may win Libby's heart as well.

Ms. Jacobs shows her talent for weaving a charming tale, full of humor, and life in a good-sized city with a small-town heart. She handles a relatively sensitive subject (well it could be for some people) with ease, helping one understand the challenges associated the lifestyle, as well as the rewards. She depicts a family not hindered by it, but enlightened by it and overcoming it. Meg is such a charming child that no one could help but love.

Libby and Josh's dance around their mutual attraction is very amusing, especially the multi page discussion about kissing. The reader will get a lot of laughs out of it. Libby's busybody neighbors and friends are a riot, reminiscent of characters from another series of books by the talented author. No matter what book of Ms. Jacobs a person reads, there are guaranteed to be unforgettable laugh out loud moments. One may get some funny looks depending on where the book is being read when people hear the laughs.

Ms. Jacobs is an author to watch. Her unique style is one to love, which will take her far in the romance genre. This reviewer expects her to climb all the way to the top and become a household name in the near future. This is one reader who will be delighted to say "I knew her when..."

Excellent Book
Holly has a wonderful way of telling a story that is sweet and incorporates a lot of fun elements. I think the best part of this book is how she uses the challenge of a hearing impaired child and turns it into a great blessing. I also love the bits of humor she injects at the most unexpected places. This is truly a delightful book to read.

I highly recommend this book.

A Second Chance at Love
Libby McGuiness has a full life with her friends, her hair salon, and her ten year old daughter Meg. She certainly doesn't need to be fixed up with Dr. Josh Gardner who opened his new practice next door. But the matchmakers's scheme throws Libby and Josh together to plan the business association's Christmas party together, and despite Libby's mistrust of men, she realizes that Josh is actually a nice guy.

Josh is still recovering from a failed marriage and is determined not to make another mistake. But behind Libby's prickly exterior, he senses a warm and loving woman that he'd like to know better. Josh and Meg bond over video games and algebra homework, even though Meg's deafness is a communication barrier.

Holly Jacobs creates lovable, realistic characters--including the unforgettable Pearly Gates--who will win your heart in this sweet tale of second chances. This is her first Silhouette Romance, but hopefully not her last!

Review from Mexico
Having gone through most of the book, I find the way it's set out very easy-going.
Nice intro explaining the ideas behind the moves for both Black and White. All variations can be found through the index but they are laid out in a very logical manner.
The author keeps things simple and straight forward.
If you're interested in playing an active game, this variation is your pick and this book can help you out.
My experience has been that White will try to avoid the Sveshnikov unless he has studied it (typically I encounter: 1.e4,c5;2.Nf3,Nc6;3.Bb5 or Bc4 or d3, etc.)thoroughly.

A worthy successor
This book is a worthy successor to Krasenkov's 6-year-old book. It is not as "complete", especially when it comes to early divergences, but has all the latest moves (of course) and is much easier to find your way around. To the credit of a young writer, Aagaard lays his opinions on the line with plenty of exclamation marks, so that one doesn't have to get right to the end of lines to see which one is preferred. This is better than the usual run of opening books.

How a book about chess openings should be written...
This book pefectly illustrates how a chess opening book should be written. It starts with a chapter that explains typical plans and structures arising from the Sveshnikov. The best part of this introductory chapter is the explanation by the author on where the different pieces are best placed ,what piece exchange to be avoided and what piece exchange is favorable. For example, the chapter states that black should generally avoid an opposite colored bishop positions; and it si favorable for black to exchange her dark colored bishop for a knight. Needless to say, reading this chapter alone will significantly improve your knowledge of the Sveshnikov.

The next chapters give enough theories and grandmaster games. If you read the introductory chapter and grasp the ideas, memorizing the variations becomes a lot easier. Of course, the author continues to give the ideas behind the variations which also help a lot to retain the variations in your head.

If you feel that you are comfortable playing positions with structures like f7,f6,e5,d6, with the king uncastled, then Sveshnikov may be a good opening choice to be added to your opening repertoire, and if you do decide to play the Sveshnikov, this book is a must. This is better than the chessbase training program with the same subject.
