After playing for 42 years, I found this book #1!!!
I am very honored to have met Judit, Sophia, Susan and Jacob, Susan's husband. We met at the U.S. Amateur Team Championship East in February, 1998 in Parsippany, NJ. I have also been to Susan's "Polgar Chess Authority" a number of times in Queens, NY. There, I talked to Susan, Judit, Max Dlugy, John Fedorowitz, Pal Benko, Alex Chernin, Maurice Ashley, and a many others. But when I first met Susan and Cobi, I felt a need to know more about this fasinating personality, and her sisters. At the Team, I had a chess site on display on my computer. Sophia asked if I could help her find a phone number of a hotel in Amsterdam thru the Internet. She, like her sisters, was a most pleasant person - alive and vibrant! A few weeks later, the owner of the games site and I went to Susan and Cobi's home to set up the site on their computer. Being served coffee by the Women's World Champion was a most memorable experience, AND it tasted GREAT! At the Chessathon, in Newark, NJ on May 30th, 1998, I purchased her book, and she autographed it. To meet a celebrity is one thing; to have them know your name is something else; but to read and learn about their life is the ultimate! The annotated games were great!! But the life and struggle are the key issues here, as are the FAMILY accomplishments! Name a more prolific family in any sport/career!! On August 28th, 1998, Maxwell Scott, my first grandchild, arrived in this world. Labor Day weekend, 2002, will be his first chess lesson, after a visit to the Polgar Chess Authority. Thank you Susan, Judit, Sophia, and Cobi, for telling us of your great lives! Love you all!!! Richard

Inspiring story of an amazing Champion

Okay, so maybe you know who Judit Polgar is, but you aren't clear about who Zsuzsa and Sofia are, right? If so, then this is the book for you!

This book contains lots of behind-the-scenes info on Zsuzsa's tournament career, and the often nasty political tactics that were used to (try and) keep Zsuzsa out of the spotlight. This book gave me a much better appreciation of who Zsuzsa is, how her contributions to chess helped pave the way for her younger sisters (and women in general) to excel in the traditionally male-dominated chess world, and what an amazing player she is in her own right!

Also contain 100+ pages of games annotated by Zsuzsa (including all the games from her 1996 World Championship match with Xie Jun), and lots of color and b/w photos of the sisters and other chess legends (go find Bobby Fischer!).

Excellent, and an easy read, even for non-chess players! I gave it a "9" only because I wanted more, more, more!!! :-

I love quotations
These two have something very special here. I love reading quotations and I love books, so I guess it's obvious why I like this. Yet, as Winston Churchill once said, "It is a good thing for an uneducated man to read books of quotations." Thank you for the entertainment and enlightenment.

SUPER! HAS ALL MY FAVORITE QUOTES!
I've collected reading and book quotes for years in a spiral notebook. This one has all my favorites and then some. I plan to buy extra copies of this jewel for all my biblioholic friends!

Fantastic
I stumbled on this book at a friends and was hooked! Four terrible kids doesn't sound like something that leads to romance, but they can and did in both these funny stories!

Laughter, Love, and...demon-spawn?
Yes, indeed. In this heart-warming pair of romantic comedies, Holly Jacobs successfully combines all three. In READY, WILLING, AND...ABEL? Hannah wants a baby, and she chooses Abel to father her child. Although he desperately wants land she owns for his project, Abel feels it's his duty to convince her that single-parenthood is not a good idea. So he arranges for them to baby-sit his buddy's four demon-spawn children. Watching Hannah and Abel fall in love to the point that they'll willingly sacrifice their own dream for the other's is a rich, rewarding read.

In RAISING CAIN, single working-mom Lucy takes on the task of watching the demon-spawn for the summer before she starts her own business. Woody, dad to the rowdy kids, hopes this babysitter will at least stay long enough for him to line up the next one. They have no idea where the adventure will lead - but it will involve love and laughter - and a few surprises. Raising her son, Cain, is easy for Lucy. Raising demon-spawn? Well, let's just say it's always something new. And this time, that something new may just be a whole new family. Because Lucy can see the demon-spawn for what they really are: lovable, albeit rambunctious, kids. And how can Woody resist that on top of Lucy's other charms?

Ms. Jacobs manages to surpass her excellent Harlequin debut novel with this new Double Duet. She'll make you laugh, and she'll tug at your heart-strings, making these stories not-to-be-missed.

Great Book!!!!
Awsome book. Lent it to my friend and he loved it to!

A Humorous Take On A Serious Subject
Reluctant Hero is a must read for anyone interested in the Korean conflict, or war history of any kind. Although a fictionalized account, written in a toungue-in-cheek style, the story offers a tremendous insight into a place and time that will never be forgotten by those who experienced it first hand. Using humorous accounts of events that could actually be described as traumatic and often life-threatening, and detailed imagery, the author paints a vivid picture of an event in our history that many people seem to have forgotten. That the characters are able to deal with horrible conditions, faulty equipment, lack of supplies, etc., and still find humour in their situation may sound a little far fetched. But what else could they do but make the best of a rotten situation, and hope they could all go home to their loved ones as soon as possible. Between the lines of this story are the stories of many men and women who actually lived, worked, and even died in a truly forgotten war. An entertaining and insightful story that will keep you turning pages just to see what happens next.

Voodoo pharmacology
Voodoo pharmacology. That is the term that Jacob Sullum uses for our irrational fears and phobic behaviors toward psychoactive drugs. In a plea for common sense and sanity, he confronts the stereotypes that sustain our current drugs policy. He destroys the myths that these substances have magical and/or supernatural powers to enslave those who use them and places the power and responsibility for drug use back in the hands of the individual.

In example after example, he compiles a wealth of data on how the vast majority of people learn to use alcohol and other drugs in responsible manners, balancing their use with the rest of their priorities in life. While not ignoring the harms that can come from misuse and abuse of drugs, he places them in perspective with other behaviors in people's lives.

Rather than erecting legal edifices that prohibit these substances, increase the harms associated with their use, and forever give up the chance to sensibly regulate them, he goes back to the original roots of the temperance movement to show that we have always had extensive historical precedents for moderation and effective social norms in this area.

This is a profoundly uplifting book that elegantly restates the philosophy that human beings have an inherent drive for balance and health and psychoactive substance use is no exception.
Since America's War on Drugs has pernicious effects in every area of our society, this is a book that should be read by all.

THE Drug Policy Book
Jacob Sullum's research for Saying Yes will completely change the nature of drug policy debate. Even the most liberal voices promoting decriminalization tend to add a rider to their argument, "well, even if they are legal you still shouldn't do drugs. They are bad for you." Sullum explains that drugs are "bad" for a small percentage of us, but there are many more recreational, non-habitual users that enjoy drugs for the same reasons people like to drink. In addition, he provides a clear analysis against moralizing victimless crimes. This book will make waves. It will be referenced in all intelligent drug policy debates for years to come.

Clarity and Insight
The "Scientific Revolution" is a fascinating but complex and confusing topic. James Jacob in a simple, clear style "connects the dots" from Greek to near modern science. One caution: if you start highlighting important points the pages become nearly covered in flourescent yellow.

The best general book on the subject now in print.
As editor of the series in which the book appears I can say that it is a superb, general account and very accessible to undergraduates.

Shadow Shoguns: The Rise and Fall of Japan's Postwar Political Machine

The Hidden Power Behind Japan's Political System
Why has Japan changed its prime ministers with such frequency through much of the post-war period? Why did those prime ministers seem powerless to affect real change to the political system? "Shadow Shoguns" answers these questions by way of a brilliantly told story of the Liberal Democratic Party's most powerful political faction called the "gundan".

The story of the "gundan" - which means "army corps" -- is primarily the story of the man who created and ruled over it for much of the 70s and 80s, Kakuei Tanaka. Jacob Schlesinger spends more than half of "Shadow Shoguns" examining Tanaka's life, including his roots in the construction business, his entry into politics, how he made money work for him in consolidating political power, and finally, his fall from power.

Tanaka was a fascinating figure. In many ways he was a combination of LBJ and Boss Tweed. His appetite for power and money was huge, and his experience in the construction industry gave him the ability to amass both. Coming from one of the poorest prefectures in Japan, he fought hard to bring huge pork barrel construction projects back to his constituents, and they in turn gave him unflinching support even when he was charged with crimes and became a national symbol of corruption.

A scandal removed Tanaka from the prime minister's seat in 1974, but due to his constituents' support, it did not remove him from the parliament. From then until the mid-80s, Tanaka would be the power behind the throne, using money from construction projects to strengthen his faction, and his faction to strengthen his hold over national politics.

What finally removed Tanaka from his position as leader over Japan's most powerful faction was not angry voters, other factions or their political leaders, but his own underlings. Tanaka had attracted some of the most talented politicians in Japan to his faction, and handling those egos was a full-time job. After a stroke in 1985, Tanaka was unable to reassert his power, and three of his protégés (Shin Kanemaru, Noburu Takeshita, and Ichiro Ozawa) wrenched the faction away from him.

The final third of the book focuses on those protégés, their strengthening of the faction, and finally the fall of their machine as Japan's economy began to flounder. As Schlesinger tells it, the success of the faction was always predicated on continued strong economic growth. When the Japanese economy faltered throughout the early 1990s, so did the mechanism by which the "gundan" governed Japan.

This is a book that gives vivid life to a political system and to politicians many people find boring. Schlesinger shows that because Japan's most capable and interesting politicians operated out of the limelight for much of the last three decades, their story is a compelling one as well as the key to understanding the history of the modern Japanese political system.

The Land of the Rising Bribe
Concise and well written, it opens up postwar Japanese politics. Incredulous happenings! Maybe we should send some of our congressmen to Japan to check this out.-- Short shrift is given, however, to the all-pervading involvement with, and use of, the criminal organisations where the police seem powerless. Also, it should have photographs of the main actors to make it more three-dimensional.

Santore's illustrations were beautiful
Charles Santore's illustrations were beautiful. He portrayed the moods and feelings of the subjects very well indeed. We appreciated that he gave human faces to the subjects rather than the animated cartoons of Disney. I never could understand from the Disney pictures why the stepmother was so beautiful or how Snow White was deceived by such an evil looking hag. Santore's illustrations make the story believable on this score. Santore also "aged" Snow White in each consecutive picture of when she was "dead" for "many years" - thus making it credible that she was a young woman when she awoke. We also preferred the simplicity of the original story over the Disney version. We enjoyed this book and our 2.5 year old really likes it too.

Beautifully illustrated.
The illustrations in this book are breathtaking. The story is familiar, but with little twists and turns away from the Disney version, but it's the amazing artistry of the illustrations that makes this a wonderful book to own.
