Easy Recipes, Beautiful Photographs
This is a "must have" cookbook if you'd like to prepare authentic Native American food. The ingredients are easy to find in any well stocked grocery store, and the recipes are not difficult. No "weird" ethnic foods here- just good meals made with what's available. The historical background for the foods of different tribes is an interesting read. The photographs and drawings are absolutely beautiful- those alone are good reasons to purchase this book!

BEST American cookbook yet!
The photography is unbelievable and the recipes work! The book gives us a palatable way to enjoy the true native american way of cooking. I would highly reccomend this book to everyone that loves to experience the enjoyment of cooking new recepies and the even greater enjoyment of eating what they have re-created. A great book for all ages and ethnic backrounds. Good food and lots of it!

A great marriage of Native American history and recipes.
The explanations of the ceremonies when certain dishes were prepared and eaten gave insights into how Native Americans lived and celebrated life. I was surprised how much history was involved in the dishes I grew up eating and had assumed were of early American or European origin. History books never mention that our early indigenous people were gourmands.

The first steps up the ladder towards chess mastery?
You know how to set up the starting position on the chess board and how the pieces move. Then, what should you do, how should you think, what should you look out for in your opponents game? This little book starts at the beginning. It starts, perhaps for the sake of completeness, with the chess board itself and the moving patterns of the pieces. Sure, you know all that already. But do you know the relative value of your pieces? Ok, the queen is your most formidable asset and the pawn the least, but what about the knight, bishop and rook? This book teaches you how to evaluate them. It also shows you those, to the novice, devious little tricks like the pin, the fork and the skewer. Believe me, once you have understood those tricks and applied them in your own game, you start seeing vast improvements. If you, like me, play among novices and amateurs you will after a very short time start winning games!

Most of what is said in this book is probably second nature to the experienced chess player. What you get is a short and good introduction to the "nuts and bolts" of chess. The interested novice chess player would probably be able to figure out most of what is said here on his own, or pick it up from fellow players. However, spending an afternoon reading this book, and perhaps a couple of afternoons solving the exercises, may very well be the best investment in terms of progress for spent time and effort, the novice chess player will ever make.

Excellent Starter Book
Jacobs once again comes through with a winner. The beginning player is taught the basics in easy steps. Once the basics are taught, Jacobs provides simple openings to guide the player. I wish I had a book like this growing up. I knew nothing about opening systems and the reasoning behind them, except what little I had figured out on my own, until 8 years ago. The beginner/novice will quickly overtake friends and family alike following the advice of this book. Kudos!

An excellent chess reference book.
An excellent 'Everyman Chess' guide to chess provide tips for beginners and is recommended school library pick as well as public and home chess library reference collections, Byron Jacobs' Starting Out In Chess provides a grounding in the fundamental principles of the game, providing novice players with tips on how to brush up on basics and learn chess.

deeply spiritual and very poetic
Made me think of God and evil. Made me revise my whole life. The book is shaping my future with a powerful force. Is making me to live my life fully and to get in touch with my inner self in a way unknown to me. Thank God for having read it!

Beautiful, God inspired, deep, fulfilling. Changed my life
One of the best spiritual books I have ever read. Will raise questions in those with no moral principles or in search of God.Made me realize the Sodomistic society in which we live today. Showed me a path to follow, a path I like to believe. It touched my realm of inner truth.

What every man on earth should know today
Beautiful. God inspired. Has lifted my spirit to the realm of tears and repentance. A book for everyone interested in salvation. A magnificent guide to heaven. Touches the soul in a very poetic way. The prophesies included are very important to better comprehend the hard times ahead in a vision of hope.

A remarkable work
I have been fortunate enough to find copies of Volumes 2 and 3, but volumes 1 and 4 are nowhere to be found. Even the ancient copies of V.1,4 that I once found at the public library have disappeared. I've tried to contact the publisher, but I got no response. This is a tragedy, as these books belong in the hands of everyone who loves the study of Northern Mythology ( and who doesn't! ). I agree with the other reviewers. A reprint is long, long overdue.

Essential Reading for folkloric understanding.
If Dover doesn't reprint this four volume series, they are missing the boat. Or Dragonships!

THIS 4 VOLUME SET NEEDS REPRINTED!
This four volume set is absolutely essential to any study of Norse and Teutonic religion. I cannot emphasize how important these books are to anyone seriously (i.e. scholarly) interested in these topics. Someone needs to reprint this set. NOW!

A true Classic Fairy tale
I am a fan of fairy tales. And I love to share my passion for a good story with my son. My 5 year-old loved this book from the first reading.

It is not a short read for a 5 year-old, but it held his attention again and again. It is one of his favorites.

I bought this book because I love the illustrations of Ms. Hyman. We have read "Bearskin" by Howard Pyle, "Little Red Ridinghood", and "The Fortune Teller", all illustrated by Ms. Hyman. Her colors are vibrant and exciting. It seems that every book Ms. Hyman is involved with includes a great story and a great story teller.

"The Water of Life" has it all, love, tests and trials, devotion, greed, and betrayal. It gives us, mother and son, lots to talk about. I recommend this book heartily.

The Water of Life : A Tale from the Brothers Grimm
I am amazed that I never heard about this story until I was over 40 years old! This is an excellent book for teaching children the value of being loving and kind. I recently attended a talk on heroes at work and this book was mentioned. I am so glad that I purchased a copy because it will encourage me (and hopefully some friends that borrow it) that we can be heroes to those around us.

Beautiful tale for all ages
My daughter who is getting her Master's in Art asked for this book for Christmas. She adores Trina Schart Hyman illustrations. I really loved this book. The illustrations are really beautiful with many little interesting things to pick out in them. Children will find the scene from the enchanted castle especially fun. All the princes are sitting frozen in time at a banquet table. One is a frog, one a unicorn, another has butterfly wings, etc. Most of the pictures have a dark cast to them but the last one of the wedding is bright and cheery with little children wearing red costumes and throwing pink petals. The bridal couple are gorgeously dressed too. Moral of the story: Be kind and good and you will achieve true happiness.

Private Lessons with Greatest Coach with Top 50 Players
Butch Harmon, Tiger Wood's coach, called Jacobs the best teacher the game has had. Valid because most of the greats at one time or another has went to this man for help.

He's got an approach to the game which is unique, trys to keep it simple, yet unique to each individual.

Here in this wonderful book at the millenium, he takes 50 of the game's best, from Hogan to Nicklaus, Jones, Palmer, Faldo, Sned, Walter Hagen, Olazabal, Norman, Byron Nelson, Watson, Trevino, Palmer and more, and shows us what each one of them exhibits about the game that we can learn from.

The one for me that gives remarkable results is Hale Irwin, who spent two whole weeks doing nothing but hitting balls with his feet together: this gets the hands and arms swinging freely.

A collector's item, with magnificent photos, art work, and wonderful commentary by this master teacher.

Get this book, it will give you enjoyment and hints for improving your swing.

My All-Time Favorite Golf Instruction Book
I have read and own a huge library of golf instruciton books in my life-long quest to improve my golf game. Many are filled with conflicting and confusing information. John Jacob's book is by far the best golf instruction book I have ever read. I poured over this book for hours, underlining profound information, anxious to get to the practice tee to try out his suggestions. I knew immediatley that I was reading a book written by a master teacher who profoundly understood the golf swing and was able to communicate that understanding in clear and simple language. I went out and bought a copy for a golfing friend the next day.

Pete Seeger's Abiyoyo returns for a surprising story
Pete Seeger's famous song "Abiyoyo" is a family favorite of ours, so I was intrigued to happen upon his "Abiyoyo Returns." For anyone unfamiliar with the story, Abiyoyo is a fearsome giant who eats people when he's hungry and is generally destructive and scary.

In this tale, warmly illustrated by Michael Hays, Abiyoyo is summoned up to help move a boulder so that the local townsfolk can build a dam. But the magic wand used to call Abiyoyo up breaks, and there is no way to get Abiyoyo to disappear again. There is a Pandora's Box element to the tale, and the wisdom of elders is deftly interwoven with bright ideas contributed by the children in the village.

Kids will get a special kick out of the idea that the young heroine--who looks to be maybe eight or ten years old--comes up with the idea that will allow the townspeople to peacefully co-exist with Abiyoyo, while still getting their dam built and the boulder removed.

A Childhood Favorite Continues..
Continue your favorite childhood book with your children. My children love Abiyoyo Returns. A wonderful story about differences, acceptance and love. It will be a favorite in your family's library. Great holiday gift.

A haunting and compelling book about the Holocaust.
I learned about this book when I visited a friend in Germany who uses it as a philosophy text. With the exception of the haunting portraits painted by Holocaust survivors, never have I read such a powerful and vivid story. The visions of church leaders and nazi's painted by Jerry Marcus as "laughing angels" is emblazened in my mind. I wanted to take Zev Segal by the shoulders and shake him back and forth to awaken him, while wanting to learn more through his nightmares. This story has all the elements of a movie that will keep the audience spellbound from start to finish!

This is a classic and haunting novel about the Holocaust
Like the main character of this book (Zev Segal), I am haunted by visions of the evil "laughing angels" and the saintly "righteous ones" who call upon Zev (and the readers) to remember the innocent victims of the Church and the Nazi's. This is the only book on the Holocaust that really brings the roots of this dastardly era of history into present-day focus. I did not understand at first why my philosophy professor put it on our reading list - but I do now. It is a story that will stay with me forever.

Jacob's Magic Box - Alphabet
Super way to help children learn the alphabet. My 2 year-old loves the objects.

The Alphabet
This is a great little book to help pre-schoolers learn the alphabet. The pictures are delightful and fun and intriguing to curious young minds. The words associated with the letters rhyme in a clever and creative way. My 2 1/2 year-old granddaughter loves the book and we can never read it just once in a sitting. It encourages interaction and makes learning fun.

Worth it for the Pictures and Painting Alone
As an active duty Captain I was given this book by my father who is an Army Colonel. A great tabletop/bookshelf book with a history of the army which is enlightening, particulary the many photos and captions. The history is the chapters themselves is somewhat simplistic and "politically correct." Some of the Army's less glorious moments are conviently written out or glossed over or sanatized rather than dealt with in a forthright manner - i.e. the Indian wars, Civil War (southern generals are pictured but not discussed in depth), Bonus Marchers, etc. This doesn't take away from it being an excellent primer on the Army, its history, organization, values, and goals.

The many included paintings from Don Stivers, Rick Reeves, Mort Kunstler really make this edition shine. I think nearly every US Army Stivers print has made it into this edition. If you love military art this is a great value.

Four out of five stars for the sanitized P.C. history of the army. Five for the illustrations, paintings, pictures, and nice binding of this edition. Highly recommended for anyone who wants a well illustrated U.S Army history.

The Army
This book is an excellent source for anyone interested in military service history. My hats off to BG Nelson, General Sullivan, and General Shinseki for a great book. This brings to light events with which the Army is involved. Think about it, the Army brings in names like Powell, Shalikashvili, & Shinseki. All three brought in their own histories that greatly impacted the way the Army does business, and how it creates opportunities not for just a few, but for everybody wishing to commit to military service. I salute the U.S. Army for a great historical record.
