Fantastic Home-Style Ranch Recipes
Spirit of the West is a fantastic cookbook, chock full of great Ranch-Style recipes and home-style food. It is the IACP Cookbook Award Winner, and once I opened it, I could tell why! Its filled with some great recipes, tantalizing photos and accompanying stories.

My particular favorites are Quichelna Cattle Company's Rum ribs,Abuelita's Chicken Soup,Flour Tortillas, Way Station Pot Roast with Dumplings. I'm looking forward to trying the biscuit on a stick and Mrs. Swan's White Cake! YUM.

Fans of cookbooks and western cuisine are sure to appreciate this cookbook. The photos are huge, tasteful, and numerous, and the recipes offer a delightful mix of western and Mexican inspired food. Just reading this cookbook makes me hungry. =-)

Warm up your Kitchen!
Give your kitchen a shot of true blue ranch cooking with this wonderful book. This extraordinary informative and practical book will win new friends among cooks everywhere, whether experienced or new to the kitchen. Spirit of the West cooking is to be valued chiefly for its "heirloom" dishes. Treasured heirlooms that come down to us from a day when hard physical labor and a need for thrift made chuck-wagon cooks provide satisfying, hearty, filling meals. Rich simmered soups; old fashioned pot roast with dumplings, hot puddings and wonderful baking recipes will take you on a nostalgic trip to the days when homemade breads were a part of everyday life. The Spirit of the West cookbook has the best of the old recipes, easy to prepare with step-by-step instructions attuned to yesteryear's simpler, more informal approach to mealtime. Once you have tried just a few of the recipes, you will understand why generation after generation of good cooks has shared with confidence and assurance their best cooking. Use the full-color photographs for inspiration; then turn your kitchen into the most welcome place in your neck of the woods.

Star Struck: A Quinn Collins Mystery (Five Star First Edition Mystery Series)
Published in Hardcover by Five Star (2002)
Author: Nancy Baker Jacobs
Amazon base price: $25.95
Average review score:

Another entertaining mystery from Nancy Baker Jacobs.
STAR STRUCK introduces Quinn Collins, reporter and co-owner of "Hollywood
Star", a struggling show business publication. When movie mogul Shane
King (who happens to be the son of Quinn's former lover) is murdered, Quinn
uses her reporting skills to help track down Shane's killer.

Quinn is an appealing heroine (in the tradition of another detective created by
Ms. Jacobs, Devon MacDonald). Her wonderfully wry observations about Hollywood
show that she is anything but star struck. I hope this is the beginning of
a new series!

True Crime or a great mystery?
Author Nancy Baker Jacobs has nailed the Hollywood scene in this page turner of a mystery. As a former resident of Hollyweird who worked in the Biz, I recognize all the elements of the culture and the people who seek their fame and fortune there. Ms. Jacobs writes with truth and humor in this first of many (I hope) Quinn Collins mysteries.

Perhaps one of the most significant books in my life
I got a copy of this book long time ago and still remember almost as if happens yesterday. The positive effects of this book have in my life are unforgetable. Actually one of the reasons I decided to became a scientist was because the way Francois Jacob found his way in hard times. The book details his experiences during the second world war and after. In these days, we are in a new century and it seems that we haven't learn much about peace and respect and we have quite similar hard time as Francois Jacob describes. However, I totally believes that this book will be a positive hit for all students in Jr college and high schools and for sure will encourage the scientist of the future to take over this activity. The future of those that identify themselfs with Francois Jacob's life will be significant as time advance.

a surprisingly gripping story
Even though I am a molecular biologist, I began reading The Statue Within with a bit of prejudice that it would be good for me but not necessarily interesting. I figured it would be beneficial to learn more detail about the work of one of the founders of my field. Boy was I surprised! What I got instead was the examination of a complex and vivid personality, a life filled with great flux, confusion, but most of all, a passion for knowledge. Dr. Jacob started off as a reluctant medical student, went to England to escape the Nazi takeover of Paris, signed up with DeGaulle's unofficial French army and served as a medic in a messy, confusing war. Afterward he returned to Paris and his medical studies, but, lacking direction, found himself in the midst of new and interesting biological research about genetics. Fascinated and obsessed, he pestered and cajoled his way into a top laboratory at the Pasteur Institute and began to experiment. His work of course was fundamental to the understanding of the mechanical functioning of genetics, and he went on to win the Nobel. But the beauty of the book is that it isn't about the glory and accolades - it is about the thirst for knowledge and the collaborative bonds that form between bright minds. It is very good for a scientist to be reminded of the essential nature of curiosity and the trial and defense of ones hypotheses. I will be reading this one for the rest of my career!

Mr. Tom, You're Silly.
This is a retelling of the classic folktale about a young man who agrees to marry a young maiden, but only after he had found three people who are sillier than she. Thus he begins a quest that leads him to all sorts of strange places where he meets many silly people. But in the end, the suitor learns that it is he who is the silliest of them all.

The illustrations are wonderful and really make the story come alive in a real, but humorous way. I love the cat, he has some of the best lines in the whole book.

I loved this book because of the old folktale, but it's still a great story for modern kids. My younger siblings enjoyed the story, even though they called parts of it strange.

A wonderful classic folktale for children and adults
As one of the classic folktales, this story is fascinating both for children and adult. Children will find the story amusing and easy to follow. The story is a good selection of the noodleheads.

A Tree of Life: Diversity, Flexibility, and Creativity in Jewish Law (Littman Library of Jewish Civilization (Series).)
Published in Paperback by International Specialized Book Services (2000)
Authors: Louis Jacobs and Ismar Schorsch
Amazon base price: $27.95
Average review score:

Thought provoking, wide ranging perspective on Halacha
Forgiving Louis Jacobs repetitive self-pitying polemic concerning his "disbarment" from the Orthodox establishment in England, this book is an excellent and wide ranging review of the flexibility which the Halacha has historically shown in comparison with the paralysis that has struck Halachic Judaism since the Enlightenment.

Although the historical analysis is not as deep as Neusner, this book is much easier to read, and highly recommended for anyone willing to to view Halacha as a way of life, without being bound to fundamentalist thought.

If you are interested in the development of Halacha, this is an excellent introduction with many interesting and classic examples.

Finally, a revised edition of this important work
Out of all the books I have come across on the development of halakha (Jewish law), this may well be the most imporant. Rabbi Jacobs, an adherent of the historical school, illustrates that Jewish law is not - and never has been - a closed system that ignores the outside world. As the book notes "considerations beyond the purely halakhic have always played a big part in the making of halakhah, both in its original formulation and in its subsequent development. Throughout the ages halakhic rulings have been influenced by rabbis' attitudes towards the wider ideals and demands of Judaism and by social, economic, theological, and even political considerations."

The publisher notes that "The most controversial element of _A Tree of Life_, when it was first published in 1984 and subsequently, was its final chapter, 'Towards a Non-Fundamentalist Halakhah'. The new introduction written for this edition responds to criticisms raised from both the right and the left wings of the Jewish world, and also summarizes further work that has been done by scholars in the various areas that the book covers. The bibliography and notes have been expanded, and the format of the book has been enlarged to allow the copious notes to be set at the foot of the page."

Tree Stories: A wonderful heartwarming book for all
This is an amazing book full of stories that warm the soul. It's nice to finally see people who recognize the value that trees hold in our hearts!

A wondrous collection of original short stories and poems
Tree Stories: A Collection Of Extraordinary Encounters is a wondrous collection of original short stories and poems by both adult and child authors, each about a special tree that influenced the writer's life. An enchanting, lyrical anthology that celebrates trees half in prose and half in verse, Tree Stories is a most charming and delightful gift book for nature lovers everywhere. Waiting For A Message: Trees help you see slices of sky between branches,/point to things you could never reach./Trees help you watch the growing happen,/watch blossoms burst then dry,/see shade twist to the pace of the sun,/birds tear at unwilling seeds.//Trees take the eye to where it is,/where it was,/then over to distant hills,/faraway to other places and times,/long ago.//A tree is a lens,/a viewfinder, a window./I wait below/for a message/of what is yet to come.
