The Game That Was: The George Brace Baseball Photo Collection

Pictoral review of men who played for the love of the game!
I picked this book up and could not put it down until I read it from cover to cover. I swear I could hear the crack of the bat and roar of the crowd as I moved from page to page looking at the pictures and reading the commentary. The warmth of the pictures has made this the number one selection in my personal baseball library.

A Landslide MVB (Most Valuable Book)!
If this book's photographs represent only a fraction of Mr. Brace's total collection of negatives, then more should be rolling off the presses. Not only do they offer a great glimpse into a glorious past, the captions are equally superb. This is a work that's more than baseball: it's American history.

Required reading for any true Baseball Fan!
Had the privilege of meeting and knowing George Brace. This book is an excellent portrayal of the work of one of the world's few true gentlemen. Well written! You are correct...It is and will be a collector's item.

Terrific Book
If you want a good book to read this pick this one up, you won't be dissapointed.

Illuminating Wisdom for the 3rd Millenium
The truth, grace and wisdom of Mary Magdelene teachings are now brought forth in this historical, transcendental and empowering book. It may very well shift the Occidental fabric of this world. The feminine compliment is here. If you can, read this book in conjunction with the New Testament, Torrah, and/or Koran.

Splendid and Thought-Provoking
At last a Gnostic Gospel is presented in a way that even non-Gnostics can love. Leloup's excellent commentary adequately summarizes the Gnostic world-view without being intrusive, and the light he shines on the Gospel of Magdalene will make you ponder no matter what you believe, even if you believe nothing. It is short enough to read quickly -- but you probably won't. It's too good. Savor its wisdom and go back to it often. It's a spiritual experience par excellance and a bargain to boot.

Jacob in the Magic Box
I like this book because my 18-mo. old relates so well to it. He thinks Jacob is his little buddy and loves the fact that he can carry the book himself and "stash" it where he wants to. I think the material covered is great. I'm impressed.

Jacob in the Magic Box
Super way to teach children about themselves. My 2 year-old loves Jacob and the whole Magic Box series. Jacob is really cute and his grandma always makes looking in the magic box fun.

Jacob in the Magic Box
This is a wonderfully creative little book for pre-schoolers. However, older children also love to read this book to younger children as is the case with all the books in the series. In this book, Jacob helps children identify parts of the body in a fun and delightful way. The book encourages interaction and is always a favorite. My granddaughter loves to see Jacob peeking out at her from the Magic Box at the end of the story. The text is simple yet intriguing enough to capture and keep the attention. The art work is really fun and very easy for youngsters to relate to. I would recommend this book as well as the entire series to anyone wishing to positively influence young people.

This touching story will have you smiling through tears!
The story of this couple's journey of faith will have readers crying right along with them as if they were right there with them in the delivery room. Readers will see the strength people can get from a strong faith in God and a good support system of family members and friends. This is a "must read" for anyone.

Jacob's Story
This is a profoundly poignant story about a young couple's journey through the life and death of their son, Jacob, and their spiritual growth along the way. John Agliata is an excellent "to the heart" journalist with a real story to tell.

UPLIFTING AND INSPIRING
A WONDERFUL BOOK FROM A YOUNG FATHER ON THE BIRTH AND ALL TOO BRIEF LIFE OF HIS FIRST CHILD. YOU WILL PUT THIS BOOK DOWN ONLY TO WIPE THE TEARS AWAY!

Jps Torah Commentary Set

Thorough and thought provoking
Of the five commentaries in the JPS series on the first five books of the Bible, Milgrom's is the best.

Milgrom's commentary reveals a healthy respect for classical Jewish commentators but doesn't hesitate to address and add modern Biblical research. Milgrom excels when explaining the more obscure portions of Numbers, such as the rituals, calendars, and sacrifices. In addition to his verse by verse commentary, Milgrom adds lengthy excurses, exploring in more depth the issues raised in the commentary.

For example, his insights into the meaning of "tzitzit" - the fringes attached to four cornered garments - are outstanding. Milgrom argues that attaching the linen tzitzit with the dyed blue thread (techelet) to one's garment as required by the text, rendered the garment "shaatnez" - a forbidden combination of wool and linen. Milgrom notes that "shaatnez" is generally forbidden to be worn, but was permitted to be used in the construction of the Tabernacle and the clothing of the priests. By allowing, indeed requiring, every Israelite to attach shaatnez tzitzit to the corners of his/her garments, the Bible was drumming into the people the mandate that they be "a kingdom of priests and a holy nation."

Similarly, Milgrom's treatment of the paradox of the Red Cow, whose ashes purified those rendered impure by contact with the dead but rendered impure those who handled them is a tour de force of modern Biblical scholarship.

On almost every page, you will enjoy reading insights you may never before have come across. This book is a treasure for anyone willing to spend the time it requires.

Best guide to "Numbers" yet available
Like all the volumes in the JPS Torah commentary series, this volume is simply the best in its area. It contains the complete Hebrew text of Genesis, the JPS's new English translation, and an extensive original commentary that illuminates the text like a 1000 watt searchlight. On average, each four or five lines of text gets a full page of explanation and commentary, so every subject gets covered in detail.

Like all the JPS Torah commentators, this work use of traditional rabbinic commentaries, and the Mishna, Midrash and Talmud. But it doesn't end here: The commentary goes on to make good use of literary analysis and comparative Semitics; intertextual commentary relating each book to other biblical books, and evidence from modern archaeological, discoveries.

Excellent commentary on the Torah.
JPS Torah commentary is excellent. It has been an outstanding tool in my personal study of the Law. The scholarship is evident and the detailed comments provide great insight into the scriptures. Highly recommended for students of the Law.

"Linda Matthie-Jacobs' Light the Fire - Fiery Food with a Light New Attitude! is one of the best new books on spicy foods I've seen in years. Linda presents a wide range of hot recipes that watch the calories without sacrificing flavor or variety. This isn't just a low-cal cookbook, it's a healthy, flavorful collection.

The book is beautiful, with gorgeous full-page photographs that inspire.

The book comes with useful, convenient menu suggestions that offer wonderfully festive gatherings of dishes, from a full Caribbean dinner to a delicious cocktail party with fiery drinks and hit-the-spot finger food.

Linda takes a global view of spicy foods, bringing in dishes from the Southwest, the Caribbean, East Indian and Barbeque. This is a very exciting array of recipes.

The anecdotes about chile peppers and hot foods makes Light the Fire a fun read as well as an exciting cookbook. This book is a steal for its price. If there is one new book that captures the full range of spicy foods, Light the Fire is it."

Mystery at Jacob's Well is well worth your while
I am waiting for the sequel! I did not realize how many facts I was learning while I was being entertained by this wonderful story. I look forward to more books by Mrs. Bennett.

What a terrific book!
As a teacher, I highly recommend this book for not only the factual information, but for the "mystery" aspect as well. It will definitely hold a young reader's attention. I especially enjoyed the fact that the well is a real-life location and that Indian folklore played such a significant part in the story.

Mystery at Jacob's Well is a winner!
Marcia Bennett's "Mystery at Jacob's Well" is a great read for kids age 8 or up. As a writer and science teacher, I'm always delighted to find a good, wholesome children's book that incorporates an intelligent story line with accurate historical and science fact. This book reminded me of those great Nancy Drew/Trixie Belden books we used to read, but it has considerably more substance for today's more sophisticated youth audience. Although the book draws from local (Texas) folklore, it should be enjoyed by readers from Maine to California. I highly recommend Ms. Bennett's book, and hope that it is the first of a long series.

Historical Perspective on the Ghetto
This book presents a factual chronological statement on the conditions, daily tribulations, and perils of the Warsaw Ghetto. It is written in a documentary style rather than an emotional diary, thus providing a basis to compare and contrast against other "diaries". THIS SAID, it is a moving statement on Warsaw Jewry and their ability to overcome impossible odds, eventhough the overwhelming majority perished. The plethora of historical revisionists that now claim the Holocaust was a hoax must FIRST contend with "Notes"( aginst which they will lose). A truly powerful work.

Holocaust Horror
As we each sit in our little world each day perhaps having pity on ourselves. This book should be a guideline to keep us from self-pity. The author fairly reports from diaries gathered throughout the Holocaust Horror. He does not only blame Nazi Germans but Jewish Police. This is a bold, honest reflection into the eyes of children, adolescents, parents, as they were waiting for their fate. This book made me smile about humanitarism even when they truly did not have alot to share. This book made me scared for what the power of humans can do to weaken spirits. It made me cry to realize the horror they felt. I cheered hoping the author would go unharmed. I wept when I realized a man and his family perish because of a cause they firmly defended. True heroism.

Unquestionably, this is one of the best written books I have read pertaining to the tragic historic event. It is an easy reading book however, it is hard to put down once you start.

I will cherish my book always.

A must read for anyone interested in the subject
I "never" give a ten. But out of respect, this gets a ten. The author was executed by the Nazis after the Ghetto Uprising. The Notes were hidden, later found, and were assembled into a book.

Not only is this book invaluable as a source of historic perspective, it is a spellbinding book to read. I especially recommend this book to those non-Jews, like myself, whose understanding and respect for what happened needed some growth.

All the more erie, I read this book while walking the streets where it happened. You cannot help but be deeply moved by this book, its story, and its people.

I urge anyone with the slightest interest to push Amazon to get it for you. I have bought two copies, it takes time, but they can do it. It is worth the effort.

Excellent Book
One of the finest and funniest books I have ever read, I suggest to read along "Vida y Hechos de Estebanillo Gonzalez, Hombre de Buen Humor", also a XVII century rogue amidst the 30 years war!!. I find Grimmelhausen book very clever and defenitely a must to anybody who is interested in Europe. Unfortunately I do not read German so I miss many of the jokes, still the book is very well worth cover to cover. I am surprised that such a classic of the German Literature have not got a wider reputation: it is so amusing to read.

Classic Eye-Witness Account of the 30Years War.
Obviously, nobody here cared to tell you what this book is about. It's the story (some say it's autobiographical - some say it's not - The author has been a mercenary captain in the war) about a simple peasant-boy being torn into the chaos and suffering of one of Europe's longesr and THE most devastating war (half of the population in the area died). He gradually advances from being servant to being court-jester and becomes a warleader. The fascinating thing about this is:

a- Even after nearly 400 years it's easy to read.

b- Every aspect of war is described in (sometims painful) detail.

c- It's done by a man who's seen it all. So although it reads like a fantasy novel, it's authentic.

Bizzare - 30 years war - erbildungsroman - Candide -
I have read three of this series and am amazed by the core of what Grmm. was saying. Let alone the historical magnitude of a novel like this (One of the first printed material available after Guttenburg did his thing). This guy printed out what seems to me essentially the first Superman comic books. Each chapter of the three (or more) books in this series was printed as a serial. Precursor in some ways to Kafka? Simple(sic) is a hero and a knave. His love (and her Courage) now a gypsy fortuneteller, his old friend a beggar. Of course Simple finds God in the end, but it is old German stuff ain't it!

An Engaging and Excellent Book
>> Last weekend, at a time when I was very distracted and unable to focus, I
>> picked up "Songs of the Blind Snowbird" and I was captured. It was totally absorbing and presented me with an interesting combination of mental and emotional qualities: lots of new and thought provoking information about what it is like to live life as a blind person, and lots of laughs as well! Last but not least, it tells a story of the strong bond between a loving and sensitive person and his dog, who is there as a stabilizing and well attuned presence through all kinds of difficulties.
This is a beautiful book, both funny and sad, about one man's life. By the end, the reader has gotten to know a special man and two special dogs.

>>

From one snowbird to another
I've never read such a fascinating book. It was humorous, sad, enlightening, heartwarming and written in such a manner that you could picture the author as a bright, kind, strong individual. It's so obvious that this individual is a very talented writer, who is on his way towards a brilliant career! He's truly been through severe heartships.

I couldn't put this book down. I wish Robert Michael Jacobs only the very best on his first book and hope to review in the not to distant future his next book. He deserves much notoriety!

Songs of the Blind Snowbird
This is a wonderfully warm and funny book about the relationship of a man and this sometimes frustating and sometimes amusing world that we all inhabit. And it is especially so for the author, who is blind. Those sections about being blind in a sighted society are witty and enlightening. Some of the most hilarious chapters are the "Dear KC" columns where the author's ten pound dog answers questions from pets on the incomprehensible behaviors of humans. There are sad stories too, but, overall, the book is fun and clever.
