art of fashion
this is the most inspiring book. i love the beautiful designs, and this is a wonderful way to bring art into your home.

Skrebneski's talent as a premier fashion photographer shines
Skrebneski brings the passion in these gowns worn by models to life in his dramatically light photographs.

The gowns of Sardian, John Anthony, Cristobal Balenciaga, Pierre Balmain, Erik Mortensen, Geoffery Beene, Chanel, Lagerfeld, Dior, Gerre, Feraud, Galanos, De Givenchy (his source of inspiration throught out his career) Charles James, Lacroix, Lanvin, Montana, Laroche Norell, Poiret, Erte, Ricci, Gerard Pipart, Saint Laurent, Arnold Scaasi, Scherrer, Schiaparelli, Ungaro, Valentino, Philippe Venet, Versace, Mdme. Vionnet and Vera Wang are photographed in the most dramatic sense. The detail of couture is fully illustrated.

This book is an inspiration to all who are interested in fashion design.

very good, a must for all lovers of fashion
Pages are opened to reveal an almost disturbing beauty in the photographs by Victor Skrebneski of the world's greatest clothes. The book, The Art of Haute Couture, blurs the line between fashion and art until there is no distinction. Emphasis falls on various designers - arguably the best of our time - such as Givenchy and Chanel. In the photographs a portrayal of a beautiful, sophesticated and unreal type of life seems to unfold in the simple photography of beautiful clothes. Truly glamorous, this in a rare find for a lover of fashion, a must for someone who considers couture masterpieces, and designers such as Yves Saint Laurent and Versace nothing less than geniuses of art.

A review from the New York Press
A strong remembrance of redemption and love lost, this collection (a novella and two short stories) focuses on a short-lived affair between a travel consultant and a banker set in those elegaic days of 1973, a time when wistfulness and innocence was still possible. In the hands of any other author such subject matter might come across as overtly nostalgic and sappy, but Ms. Jacobs recounts the intricacies and frustrations of love with a master's skill obviously garnered from experience.

At times funny, hopeful, hopeless and tragic - in other words, a lot like love itself. Butterfly in Amber is a sweet and joyous read that will transport you into the lives of some very fascinating characters and to a place where it's okay to love and dream of happy endings.

A True Love Story
I loved this book, I felt like I was part of a wonderful love between two people. I thought the writing to be swift and descriptive, it transcended me to another time and place not too long ago. I think it would make a terrific movie.

A wonderful adult love story.
I thoughly enjoyed curling up and reading these wonderful stories of love and loss. It is written in a way that you think someone is reading the story to you. Do yourself a favor and curl up and read this wonderful book. You will feel good after you do.

Save Money, Save Your Health!
Gluten has been a well-kept secret of certain religions and peoples of our society. It is finally coming into the light in today's health-conscious society.

With quality whole wheat available now to anyone with a postal address, the technique of cooking with gluten, either as a meat substitute or a meat filler, can be practiced by everyone. I first discovered gluten in the seventies in a Magic Mill Mormon cookbook. As the making of gluten is fairly time-consuming, I learned to make a lot at a time and storing it for future use.

I have made countless meat dishes with either only gluten or gluten and meat, and most people wouldn't realize any difference! I hope shoppers aren't deceived by the idea that most recipes available are Oriental; gluten can be used by everyone. Certainly, the making of gluten can be easier using a large mixer, but can actually be done by the strong of hand.

Highly recommended book, an excellent resource!

First recipe tried was MOST EXCELLENT!
The first recipe I tried from the book left us with a 'meat-like' product that resembled and tasted like chicken fried steak. It was delicious and the whole family ate it like gang-busters. Storing vital wheat gluten in the cabinet is a much cheaper alternative than purchasing meat and then having to keep it under refrigeration. Strong BUY recommendation.

Excellent vegetarian cookbook using an amazing new food
The only book of its kind that shows you how to make this amazing new food, seitan, from whole wheat. Also included are recipes for preparing this food if bought already prepared. There are more than 200 recipes from appetizers and soups to main dishes and desserts using this 100% vegetarian delicious whole food.

Creative Correspondence by Michael Jacobs, Judy Jacobs
Fantastically inspiring book. Made me drop it and make a unique piece of correspondence!

A must have for those who work with paper projects.
A must have for anyone who works with paper. More than just a project book, the Jacobs have put together a complete explanation of so many aspects of working with paper that no other book covers. The photographs and directions are easily understood explaining tools, paper types, basic measuring, cutting, folding and decorating paper. All the projects are very very creative and offer variations on the ideas. From the postcards to the notecards and envelopes this book is a great source of ideas and inspiration.

It's Creative and Sometimes It's Art!
These folks have actually taught workshops to real people. You can tell. The directions and photos are accurate and easy to follow. The projects are the simple, open-ended kind that should get the creative juices flowing. No one should ever again send plain-Jane boring mail. Reuse, recycle, collage! Thank you, Creative Zone!

Absorbing, suspenseful thriller from Nancy Baker Jacobs.
Ms. Jacobs has a knack for creating believable, "ordinary" characters
and placing them in extraordinarily dangerous situations.

More great news: Ms. Jacobs has other books due out in 2002!

Suspense readers delight!
Ms. Jacobs has done it again! Ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, and a plot which picks up speed with every page, this thriller is a joy ride for the thriller reader. If you're looking for a good read, pick up Double Trouble---you won't be able to put it down.

AT LONG LAST!!
I'll say right up front that I'm a friend of Nancy Baker Jacobs, and I haven't yet read DOUBLE OR NOTHING. I'm rating it five stars, though, in anticipation of what I know it's bound to be. I've read several of Nancy's other books, and have been waiting impatiently to receive the long-awaited DOUBLE OR NOTHING. Nancy is a great writer, and she's been gone from the mystery scene far too long. As an author myself, and a former freelance editor, I know good writing when I see it--and Nancy goes beyond good. Her books are thoughtful, intelligent, tense, fast-paced and exciting. Welcome back, Nancy! And get that promised copy of DOUBLE OR NOTHING to me--fast!!

Oustanding Intro to Economics
This book is a great intro to the fundamentals of economics. TDr Rooy has lucidly in a simple question answer format described a myriad of topics that make sense to the causal reader.

Chapters 5,6,7 were so much fun that I could hardly put the book down. Mind u that I never really did any course work in Economics, I am a computer science graduate.

I really loved the book. I thoroughly recommend it to an economics novice.

Excellent book!
If you know nothing about economics, this is the best book to start with. It's easy to read and contains many real life examples. Having studied Economics in university, I still find this book fascinating due to its simplicity. A must have!

fantastic book for guidiance on economic activities.
Makes economics activities comprehensive and how these affect our lives. A must read for all investers.

When is Dr. DeRooy going to publish "More Economic Literacy?"

"Economic Literacy" was just the new coat I needed after over twenty-five years of post-college economic news flowing my way in ever increasing volume and my memory of college macro and mirco economics 101 courses worn threadbare.

Dr. DeRooy put the issues into perspective; he tells what's important. He tells why.

So much has gone on since 1993, what appears to be the last year Dr.DeRooy had all the annual statistics available to him when he wrote "Economic Literacy".

I'll buy, and recommend to all who come across this comment, "More Economic Literacy".

I laughed and learned at the same time.
This book is great! I read Economic Literacy once through, and now I find myself returning to it to refresh my memory on econ-related topics I encounter in the news or at the office. De Rooy uses a combination of brief lessons and anecdotes to relay information in a comprehensible form. I can understand best if I think of things in terms of real life experiences--Economic Literacy appeals to somebody like me because it is realistic. It is not at all lofty or overly theoretical. And hey, how many other econ books have cartoons in them? Economic Literacy makes a great gift, too! The friends with whom I shared it really enjoyed it.

The best economics textbook not found in a classroom
This book saved me in multiple economics classes, explaining terms that most books clouded with superfluous rhetoric and boring text. A must for anyone interested in money, and in that case, who isn't?

Electing Jesse Ventura: A Third-Party Success Story
Published in Paperback by Lynne Rienner Publishers (2001)
Author: Jacob Lentz
Amazon base price: $16.95
Average review score:

Prodigious Talent
As somewhat of a pundit and a native Minnesotan I had been waiting for ANY analysis of Ventura's victory beyond our abysmal newspapers' and Ventura's own "We shocked the world." After having just begun this remarkable book I wondered why I had no other works by Mr. Lentz in my library. This smart, crisp analysis is extraordinary in both its breadth and depth. Simply page through the bibliography and footnotes and you will understand what I mean. This would be a perfect addition to any class (or individual) interested in the rising third party movements in our country, and will pleasantly surprise both the novice and the seasoned pundit with it's readability.

Jake Lentz = Writing god
Having been a fan of Lentz for years, I feel that this book is the pinnacle of his writing achievements to date. As another member of the "Jacob Lentz Official Fan Club" put it, "This book will hurt your brain and make you weep". Lentz has established himself as one of the pre-eminent American authors of the mid-late 1990's era and hopefully, will continue to impress the American public with his eloquent verbosity. Bravo.

best book i've read in a long time.
This is a great book. Read it and weep over the beauty of the prose, the breadth of the insight, and the joy of being a human alive and reading.

Gaius Valerius Catullus's Complete Poetic Works (Dunquin Series, No 20)

Average review score:

Brilliant, breath-taking, and faithful
Dr. Jacob Rabinowitz' Catullus is exactly the Catullus I had imagined - a cool fellow in a leather jacket. This is the best possible Catullus for the non-professional - and this professional likes it too.

Poetic translation of a Poetic Work
I never would have read the works of Catullus had it not been for Dr. Rabinowitz' translation. His translation is poetic, that is, he attempts to capture the spirit and mood of the poet, rather than remain stiffly be obligated to literal translation. That way, Rabinowitz captures the universality of Catullus' pain at heart ache for some young thing he met in the baths in a way that is accessible to a modern read like me, who is not a classicist. In a way, Jacob translated the poems of Catullus not as a scholar, but as someone inspired with Catullus' spirit. I look forward to the day he publishes his manuscript play of the Gilgamesh Epic.

The Cat's Out of the Bag
Rabinowitz' translation omits footnotes because he works glosses poetically into the text, or comes up with a modern equivalent that makes the meaning clear -- thus he has Catullus nurse himself back to health with "chicken soup" instead of the 'correct' "nettle broth" -- so, as he explains, the reader can enjoy the poems, and not play peek-a-boo with the footnotes.//This is the style of translation used by Jerome in the Vulgate, by de Nerval in his Faust -- in short, wherever a real poet is doing the work. Such endeavors have never pleased the impotent old fogies -- which is almost the definition of a Classicist -- who like their translations, like their authors, dead.//Bravo for Rabinowitz! And a pity Amazon doesn't carry his scriptural translation "The Unholy Bible."
