A great starting point for a journey through philosophy
This book is used as the primary text in my university's introductory Philosophy course, and I think it's an excellent choice. It includes classic texts written by well-known philosophers and the writings of scientists, novelists, religious figures and many others. The inclusion of philosophical writings from such unlikely sources is a great illustration of how philosophy is woven into all aspects of our lives. Reading this book will help you to realize how many philosophical issues you already deal with in your own life and will also help you to find new ways of thinking about and dealing with them.

Great introduction into philosophical thought
I ordered this book as a requirement from a great professor during college. Having only read just more than a handful of chapters in that semester I became hooked. I have since moved on and really started to appreciate the ultimate questions of life. Not that this book answers them. That is still the uniqueness of humanity, individual thought. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to be a better skeptic. We so readily just accept things that our ancestors accepted without a thought as to how reality really is. The wide array of topics is to be applauded and a great concept to take a look at may arenas of thought. Thank you professor Buenter(Binter).

I read some of this book while at a camp with someone that h
This is a really good book. It really shows the bacics of philosophy. When i came home i have been wanting to read the rest of the book badly.

Very interesting!!!
The book tells us about what happened to John F Kennedy during World War two, how the Japanese sank his boat, so how he became a hero. There is a short biography( 1917-1940) too, with cute photos. There was a nice chapter on the Solomon Islands, the local people, the influence of Western culture, and the culture today. I suggest it to all Jack Kennedy fans or not.

Excellent story
Dr. Ballard lives in Lyme Connecticut, 10 miles from where I live. I saw this book in a local bookstore window this weekend, and realized that he was coming to town in 4 days to speak on the subject. Being a history buff, and certainly a Kennedy history buff, I bought the book (locally, so that he would sign it for free!), and read it last night. It's a short read, with only one or two chapters covering the actual exploration for the PT-109. The rest of the book contains Kennedy family history dating back to the Kennedy's in Boston from 1850. There was a nice chapter on the Solomon Islands, the local people, the influence of Western culture, and the culture today. There was also nice information on the crash that proves that the Hollywood movie on PT-109 took some liberties concerning his rescue of marines on a beach ... go figure ... Hollywood taking liberties...

The bottom line ... I believe Ballard has found the PT boat ... even though he couldn't quite prove it ... The fact a future president's boat was lost in this region has left a closeness with the locals towards the United States ... and the two local's that discovered Kennedy and his crew are still alive and still very much influenced by their part in history. This will be Ballard's last modern historical ship find ... after this he will move on to work on the Black Sea project ... I'm glad he found John Kennedy's boat before he moved on. Read the book

Another view of today's medical market place.
The book stresses using common sense in the face of the over-hyped medical scene and frightening implications presented by the Media that we are all likely to be the victims of some dread disease. Dr Solomon's bedside manner is so rare today.

timely medical self-help book
It's easy to see why Dr.Solomon has been named as the #1 primary-care doctor in the Boston area, in surveys conducted by Boston Magazine. He has a commonsense, down-to-earth, yet authoritative style--which is evident in this timely, self-help health guide. He offers wise counsel and practical advice for a range of topical medical concerns and interests, including obesity, cancer, alternative remedies, and preventive measures. With his exceptional understanding, he deals with a person's emotional and psychological states, as well as the physical aspects of the various conditions and illnesses and the therapies, medications, vitamins, and treatments for them. In the self-help vein bolstered by his professional standing and two decades of experience, Dr. Solomon proffers for readers uneasy about, or perhaps even anxious over, various medical problems, a perspective on them that is positive for their overall well-being while sensibly taking into account their particular medical condition and their concerns. Dr. Solomon's definition of good health includes not worrying excessively about your health so you can enjoy life fully, which is the healthiest condition of all. He delivers a welcome perspective for many reader's in today's health-conscious culture.

Dr. Spock For Adults
Physicians have written many books for the lay public that are narrowly focused on the medicine and the disease. "Don't Worry Be Healthy" offers a new and refreshing perspective that focuses on the patient from the physician's point of view. Have you ever wondered what your doctor is thinking about when you visit him or call him in the middle of the night? How does the physician "practice" when the remedy is related to attitude and behavior? The author, a noted Boston area internal medicine specialist, reveals how he evolved scientifically and emotionally to help patients confront and deal with a variety of health issues ranging from obesity, cancer, aging and death.

The perspective is unique because it comes from an experienced internal medicine physician whose insight and character have clearly advanced not only from his practice, but from his personal experience with cancer that infected not only him, but his wife, his father, his father-in-law, and his mother-in-law. Despite this Job-like journey, Dr. Solomon not only survives but also gains the wisdom to provide many useful lessons that help his patients and readers understand and deal with health and illness.

"Don't Worry Be Healthy" is very much like Dr. Spock's Baby & Child Care, but for adults. It offers impassioned and practical advice for people when confronted with illness - real or imagined.

A must-have!
This is the book to have whether science was a weak subject in school or none of the scientific knowledge was retained once out of school. Parents would find this book useful in quelling the barrage of questions from their inquisitive children while satisfying their own curiosity in the field of science. Do you know why people have different blood types? Different types of proteins found in red blood cells and the plasma they float in determine the type of blood a person has. What causes hiccups? They are caused by the diaphragm going into spasms. These are some of the interesting subjects explained in this book accompanied by funny and amusing illustrations. Parents and children will repeatedly reach for this book as a reference for their questions in the field of science.

Really cool book!
This is a really cool book! I always wondered why drops of water cling to the inside of a glass when you turn it over, and this book finally answered my question. I also found out that pandas aren't really bears (they're more like oversized raccoons) and whether it rains on other planets. I would recommend this book for any kid or adult who really wants to know. The drawings are funny, too. (like the radioactive toupee and the black widow spider wedding, where she promises to love, honor, and DIGEST).

A Fabulous Book!
This is one of the most fascinating books I have ever read. It seems like everything you've ever wondered about science or nature is explained here, everything from where zebras got their stripes to where lightning comes from. Although the publisher classifies this as a "young person's book," it contains far more detail in its explanations than you find in some science books aimed at adults. Each answer, in fact, is an essay on the subject, long enough to really explain the answer. I also think that the tone of the answers is just right -- it's just like having someone who knows all about science and nature and also has a great sense of humor come to your house and answer all the questions you've wondered about for years. And the drawings are GREAT -- this is the only science book I've ever seen that actually made me laugh out loud.

Through the roof.
This book has been rightly praised as a guide to an individual's philosophy, as if we can all accept that Hegel had an individual self entitled to pick and choose among the many reactions to the intellectual currents which had been generated in his time by Kant, Goethe, Schelling, and Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1762-1814), who is discussed in a section on pages 85-96 of this book but is not listed in the index. I had intended to count refernces to Fichte in this book before writing my review, so customers would have some idea how often I looked at the pages of this book, but that would have been tedious. Most often Fichte was merely mentioned as another self, whom we are expected to believe was entitled to choose from the intellectual currents of his time much as a chairman at a political convention might officially state, "The chair recognizes the floor." Of course Fichte thought he could do more than that with Kant's philosophy, as Solomon shows in his typical comment: "And it is in this morass of ambitions, hostilities, and mixed interpretations that the seemingly simple progression, from Kant to Fichte to Schelling to Hegel, has to be viewed" (p. 85). Note 41 at that point mentions "one of the best-known post-Kantians, Arthur Schopenhauer," who was omitted in the simple progression because his "notoriety" came later. Those who have criticized Schopenhauer (see Witold Gombrowicz, PHILOSOPHY IN SIX LESSONS AND A QUARTER, for someone who considers a lot of these philosophers Polish, and still criticizes them) are likely to picture Schopenhauer going through the roof as a primary feature of Schopenhauer's philosophy. Hegel, as a professor, does not have quite that much freedom, and involvement in philosophy might be considered his greatness because it is obviously his effort to cling to the floor in the midst of mounting outrageousness. Solomon does a pretty good job of staying on the floor, too. Only a poet would read this stuff and think, "We shovel a grave in the air there you won't lie too cramped," as Paul Celan wrote in a famous poem after World War II, only in German.

Fascinating, a dialectic of its own
Solomon gives a lucid and clear picture of Hegel's ambitions in his Phenomenology. For ever obtuse, dense, snide paragraph Hegel wrote, Solomon delivers clear, intelligent, and at times funny explanations of Hegel's motivations and plans. An essential companion when burrowing through Hegel's magnum opus.

The most lucid presentation of Hegel available
This is the best single volume on Hegel available. In plain, and often sparkling, English, it does a wonderful job of explicating this tremendously difficult thinker. It also provides a convincing argument that Hegel is not merely a historical curiosity but a very contemporary thinker. It includes a valuable intellectual historical summary that places Hegel within the literary, philosophical, and political thought of his day, a remarkably lucid glossary that translates Hegel's notoriously difficult terminology into plain English, and a fabulous chapter-by-chapter explication of what is arguably Hegel's most important work, The Phenomenology of Spirit.

Terrific teacher
This is a great book. Ben Solomon has a knack for explaining the most complicated moves. He is a masterful teacher.

This Book Rocks!
Ben Solomon has the unique ability to turn a technical manual into a literary tour de force. A must read for anyone looking to take the next step in their development as a paddler.

A great book from a great kayaker
This book is great! The concepts that the author, Ben Solomon teaches are well illustrated, easy to understand, and will greatly increase your confidence on the river. His writing style is informative and humorous at the same time. Ben successfully communicates some of the more difficult concepts of whitewater paddling - all the while keeping the book fun to read and hard to put down. Whether you're interested in playboating, river running or both - I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone wanting to improve their whitewater kayaking skills.

INFORMATIVE & EASY READING !
Wish I had this book several years ago to help me plan the prototype layout and what engines to acquire. Highly recommend this book for NYC fans.

Me and my Son love it.
The book is well done, and the photos are super.
My five year old can't put the book down. It really shows the NYC in a way that was never seen before, unless you worked for the railroad. If you love trains, you must add this book to your collection.

great short history of the new york central system
This is a great short history of the New York Central System. Chapters 1 to 4 deal with the makeup of the system and history. Chapter 5 deals with Grand Central Terminal and New York electrification. Chapter 6 is the steam locomotive fleet. Chapter 7 is the diesel locomotives. Chapter 8 is the electric locomotives. Chapters 9 & 10 are about the freight and passenger service. The pictures used in the book are great. The amount of information is remarkable. If I were to purchase only one book on the New York Central System, this would be the book.

This book was very informitive for my wife and I. Since reading the shark Liver Oil book we've been using the Shark Liver Oil gelcaps which we purchased [online] at [local internet comany] . com and have been experiencing great results! For the past two years we virtually never get sick, which allows us to stay on course with our busy lifestyles. This book is a "must read" for everyone and the Shark Liver Oil gelcaps are a "must use".

Amazing!
Shark Liver oil is amazing! This book can lead you to a better life through improved health. I started taking Shark liver oil in August of last year. I usually have serious allergies starting every fall, but not this past fall. Shark liver oil is the only thing I did different in my life and this is the first year in the past 12 years that I made it through a football season with no sinus problems! In addition to the sinus benefits, I have been sleeping and resting better at night. Be sure you get high quality shark liver oil. The best is going to be found through an MLM company not at a health food store. jm1134@home.com.

amazing!!!!!
I have given this book to people with arthritis, breast, prostate, uterus , stomach cancers. They have read this book. Our company is a distributor of this product and the results have been incredible. The cancers have either lessen or disappeared. Great marriage with kimo!!

Why Noni and for what?
I would have to agree with the previous review that this is a great
companion (follow-up -- read the other one first) to Solomon's other
book on Noni. I dont' take Noni for any specific "ailment".
I prefer to think of it as preventative care....

Dr. Neil Solomon dodes it again!
This book is a great tool to introduce new people to TAHITIAN NONI Juice. It gives you great research and detailed information for different ailments that TAHITIAN NONI Juice can help. It also gives people instructions on how to get the best results from the juice as well. All and all a great book!

AlkalineLife.com

The Best Noni Resource Available!
This is one of the very best resources I have found to really explain why and how Tahitian Noni Juice works! Dr. Solomon also answers the first question everyone asks: How much should I drink? Well, he usually answers: "The amount that works!" But, in this book, he gives general guideline to help individuals derive the greatest benefit from Tahitian Noni Juice! All of the information presented in this book is based on his extensive research and surveys of over 10,000 individuals who drink Tahitian Noni Juice for a variety of health challenges. Now, when I share the miracle of Tahitian Noni Juice with someone, I also share this book!
