Jack's book is a tool with which to see through our culture.
Dr. Solomon brings the esoteric academics of semiotics to pop-culture. Jack, a noted semiotician and beloved English professor at CSUN, discusses the language necessary for a culture to become self-aware and in this sense is a nice follow up to Edward T. Hall's _Beyond Culture_. Jack, always erudite yet undaunting, tells in merciful language how we are victims of our particular culture until we can understand its codings in advertising. Decode these signs, resist culture, and defend yourself, says Jack the semiotics guru!

A Literary Masterpiece
This is one of the most thought provoking books I have ever read. Bonevac's prose are masterful...you literally hang on every word. He somehow translates intellectually difficult topics into practical, easy to understand examples. This book is a bargain at any price. I am a changed man for reading it...Thank you Dr. Bonevac! I have already ordered some of your other works and eagerly look forward to reading them with the same intellectual vigor. Viva Bonevac!

Complete development of the theory of singular integrals.
The next step after Vekua's, Muskhelishvili's and Gakhov's treatises on singular integrals and its applications is this thick encyclopedic volume.

Including most of the topics covered in the above-mentioned texts, the authors go further to present all of the important results plus some new ones in a unified way.

Contents: Basic Facts from Functional Analysis; The One-dimensional Singular Integral; One-dimensional Singular Integral Equations with Continuous Coefficients on Closed Curves; One-dimensional Singular Integral Equations with Discontinuous Coefficients; Systems of One-dimensional Singular Equations; One-dimensional Singular Equations with Degenerate Symbol; Some Problems Leading to Singular Integral Equations; Some Further Subsidiaries; Singular Integrals of Higher Dimensions in Spaces with a Uniform Metric; The Symbol of Higher Dimensional Singular Integral Operators; Singular Integral Operators in Spaces with Integral Metric; Multidimensional Singular Integral Equations; Singular Equations on Smooth Manifolds without Boundary; Systems of Multidimensional Singular Equations; The Localization Principle, Singular Operators on Manifolds with Boundary; Mutidimensional Singular Equations with Degenerate Symbol; Methods for the Approximate Solution of One-dimensional Singular Integral Equations; Approximate Solution of Multidimensional Singular Integral Equations. References.

The book is intended for experts but most parts could (and should) be covered in graduate courses.

Based on a Midrash folktale and Judaic teachings
Solomon was a young prince who lived next to a large forest where he spent every spare moment because he preferred peaceful trees to rancorous humans, and was taught to speak their language by the animals who lived there. When Solomon grew up and became the king, he found himself so busy that he forgot about the forests and his animal friends. Eventually Solomon came to understand the price that must be paid when people don't take proper care of the earth and its blessings. Highly recommended for young readers grades 1-3, and based on a Midrash folktale and Judaic teachings about the earth and the festival cycle, Solomon And The Trees is an outstanding and superbly presented collaboration between author Matt Biers-Airel and illustrator Esti Silverberg-Kiss.

"A Wonderful and Little Known Book."
A wonderful and little known book, by a wonderful and little known photographer. Butcher photographed small towns and rural prairie life in central Nebraska from the 1880's to the turn of the century. These are documentary photographs that are almost surreal in their intensity. Sod houses, portraits of wide-eyed families, towns slapped down for no particular reason - odd writing on the negatives - as well as birds and trees sketched in to satisfy Butcher's sense of natural history gone awry. A great book.

Solomon Maimon: An Autobiography
Published in Paperback by Schocken Books (1987)
Authors: Salomon Maimon, Moses Hadas, and Solomon Maimon
Amazon base price: $4.95
Used price: $4.73
Average review score:

Great book, possibly not by Maimon
This is an amazing book and I am surprised it is not better known. It tells about the life of a Polish Jew who escaped from what he considered the stifling atmosphere of Polish Hasidic life and went to Germany to become part of the German Enlightenment. He translated Kant into Yiddish for the edification of his compatriots back home. The scenes depicting Maimon's marriage at the age of 12 and of Jewish life in eighteenth century Poland are very memorable. Someone told me recently that this book might not actually have been written by Maimon at all but by the "editor," the German writer Karl Philip Moritz, who apparently had a similar life. Perhaps that is why the book has not been reprinted.

For Philosophical Studies supplemental reading lists
Solomon Maimon: Monism, Skepticism, And Mathematics a scholarly study of the philosophical system proposed by Solomon Maimon (1753-1800), particularly in Maimon's signature work "Versuch." Constructing parallels to understanding Maimon's philosophical system with Maimon's philosophy of mathematics, author Meir Buzaglo (Lecturer, Department of Philosophy, Hebrew University of Jerusalem) brings out a thorough examination of Maimon's life's work and complex ideas. Thoughtful, college-level writing on such diverse topics as substance and causality make Solomon Maimon: Monism, Skepticism And Mathematics an intriguing treatise for Philosophical Studies supplemental reading lists, as well as for academic reference collections.
