Standard Catalog of German Coins, 1601-Present
Published in Paperback by Krause Publications (1995)
Authors: Douglas Nicol, Colin II Bruce, Norman D. Nicol, and Marian Moe
Amazon base price: $59.00
Average review score:

The best I've seen
Unless you speak/read German, this is as good as it gets. Not only is this most comprehensive compilation of relative values of German States issues, but the other information helps with the overall history lesson. This book is an ABSOLUTE MUST for anyone at the German coin beginner/intermediate level of collecting, and I suspect it has become quite useful to the advanced collectors/dealers.

A "must-have" book for the collector of German coins!
Krause Publications has brought under one cover the vast numismatic production of the German cities, states, and colonies from 1600 to date. Every serious collector of German coins needs this book. This book is a real bargain because it eliminates the need for the German coin collector to purchase Krause's regular world coin books that are now broken down into different centuries (this single volume pulls information out of the four volumes that would otherwise be required).

Here are some good points:

1. Collectors of Thalers will be pleased to see Davenport numbers incorporated in their favorite areas.

2. Numerous illustrations aid the collector in identifying unknown coins.

3. Prices appear in at least four grades for each coin.

4. Helpful sections include an "Instant Identifier" with illustrations of various coin designs specific to a particular area, and "Legend Abbreviations" which give the collector a big leg up in identifying coins based on the legends alone.

5. A decent attempt is made at listing Pattern pieces (those coin designs never officially adopted).

Here are a few areas where the book could be better:

1. Prices appear to reflect the American market for German coins which, in many cases, is substantially lower than the German market for the same coins.

2. Some of the States higher in the alphabet (Saxony, for example) seem to be lacking data on the earliest coins.

3. I'd like to see the Pattern section expanded and possibly include the numbers from Schaaf's reference book on this area.

4. Cross-references to Jaeger (the German "Guidebook") would be helpful to our friends across the big pond.

Lest I appear too critical, let me state that the positive impact of this book and the obvious time and effort that went into its production are immensely important. No other reference on German coins comes anywhere close to matching the sheer volume of information contained herein. No other single book opens up the world of German coins like this book does. Thus, whether you're a beginning or an advanced collector, this book should be an essential part of your reference library.

An underrated gem of a book!
I picked up this book casually on my way into a bookstore... to add to those which I would peruse on my cross-country flight. I quickly found myself thoroughly engrossed in the stories of 61 women managers and executives who seemingly "had it all." I found myself thinking through episodes in my own life and identifying with the choices, tradeoffs, and dilemmas of several different women. It gave me some new appreciation of and insights into how successful women grapple with the issue of integrating their personal and professional lives in order to live life to the fullest, whatever their own personal definition of that might be. I used some of the strategies suggested in one chapter to help me think through a career problem I'm currently grappling with. This book was an easy and insightful read; it turned out to be the ONLY book I read during my flight! I would encourage all women, not just managers, to read this book; it addresses concerns that almost all of us have. For that matter, even though the research is based on women, I know from personal experiece that many men are grappling with similar issues, and they would probably find the book helpful as well. Even if not interested for themselves, it would help them better understand their wives, daughters, and female coworkers.

A MUST READ!
Although this book is written with women managers in mind, the issues and themes it discusses will resonate with every woman who has ever juggled a number of different roles in her life - and probably with many men as well! The authors discuss five key developmental themes in women's lives -- the need to act authentically, make connections, control one's destiny, achieve wholeness, and gain self-clarity -- and show how these themes combine to create a whole that is dynamic and unique to every woman. In addition, the book is filled with practical tips and helpful exercises to help the reader who wants to develop in these areas. One thing that makes this book stand out from many other popular business books is that it is based on an extremely solid piece of research. The authors interviewed more than sixty women, followed them over time, and collected other information about them. Yet, although it is based on an academic study, the book is an easy read - very enjoyable. Almost every woman should be able to find herself somewhere in this book. I highly recommend it!

Reading this book changed my life
I received this book as a gift years ago when it first came out. Now the pages are worn and falling out and there are dog-ears all through it. Jennifer's words were always the perfect crutch/inspiration/sanctuary over the years. I offer her words to others now who consult me on children, crises, self-esteem or any of the many things we all struggle with. I have made this book part of the tapestry of my life and the colors are much more vibrant for having read and re-read and lived it. Thank you, Jennifer.

An easy to read aid to self exploration and discovery!!
Jennifer James has the talent to instill her wisdom into a short sentence, paragrapgh or page, yet packing the power to drastically and positively change your life! This book covers so many day to day topics of life's ups and downs that it is a steal at any price! I became acquainted with this book during a time of re-discovery. I had just come out of a 12 year marriage in which I had lost sight of exactly who I was and how I fit into the current world. Never being a big reader, I really enjoyed the power of her words in short vignettes which provoked my self examination. No, she did not just give me all the answers I was seeking, instead, she provoked me into self discovery which led me to my own conclusions and decisions. Thank you, Jennifer! I have sent or recommended this book to many friends and have received nothing but praise about your work!

A terrific resource!
Because my twins were premature, I felt I had a crash course in a BUNCH of medical jargon. As time passed, I realized that the quality of their care depended upon how much I know. This book is a wonderful tool for parents to become a strong advocate for their child's health and well being and I HIGHLY reccomend it!

An Essential Guide
Somehow I have collected quite a collection of home medical guides - I have everything from the Mayo Clinic's Guide to your baby's first year to Sears and Sears's "The Baby Book". In "Take Charge of Your Child's Health", Wooten and Verney have done a masterful job of providing medical information and parenting advice that every parent needs. Their review of the pros and cons of immunization, for example, is based on the latest science and is the best I have read. They provide excellent advice on dealing with fevers, ear infections, colic, allergies and a myriad of conditions both minor and serious that parents may encounter. A strong thumbs up for Take Charge of Your Child's Health . . . .

Chock-full of Useful Information
I'm buying copies of this book as the perfect gift for college-bound H.S. students, recent H.S. grads, and students already in college. Freebies are listed, as well as places where you can get sizable discounts on just about anything. I always knew that discounts were available with a student I.D. card, but had no idea how many places accepted it. This book tells you about all of them. The format is easy to follow, and the author's tone is friendly and conversational. She really knows her stuff!

great for students, even better for parents
I gave this to my daughter before she left to start sophomore year at college; I earmarked pages where she can book her plane tickets back home for Thanksgiving at a student rate, where she can get cheap textbooks and so on. This is a great guide for her, but even better for ME since I am paying her tuition costs which are getting higher, and am always looking for ways to trim the fat.

You Go Girl!
This is a great book to encourage a can-do attitude in young girls. It is the story of Robin Hood, told from Maid Marion's point of view. She is a feisty, smart heroine and the story is exciting. Naturally, Marion saves the day! Good as a read-aloud book, or for a capable young reader.

A wonderful adventure featuring two classic heroes
Stephen Mooser did a wonderful job of bringing Marian and Robin to life as kids. Their adventures are exciting, fun, and believable as they overcome their fears to rescue Marian's father and fight the evil Sheriff (who even then was not at all a nice person). The characters are interesting and keep you reading and rooting for them until the last page.

I stayed up til 1am to finish this one!
What a great book! It's so easy to identify with the character - you'll feel like you are chatting with a friend, instead of reading a book. The end is right on target. You'll see what I mean when you get there! Treat yourself to this one --it's worth it!
