East Tennessee Cantilever Barns
This book is an excellent source of information about the cantilever barns and some of the people to built them. I am a decendent of John Trotter, whose family built several of the barns. I visited Sevierville yesterday and was able to follow the map and see the barns myself. I didn't know about any of this until I ran across your book in a local store. Thank you very much. Stephanie

Excellent Mentoring for Minority women Scientists
This book gives a young woman thinking about a career inscience a chance to see a warm engaging picture of a young nativeamerican woman scientist. Ms. Wallace's early inquisitiveness rings true as a way to identify a potential scientist. When I was a teenager I read a biography of Marie Curie, and I still remember the impact it had on my thinking that I could be a physicist. For Native Americans who have not had a change to know that people of their ethnic background can find a career in the special world of science and engineering, this book can serve as a similar spring board for a budding scientist. I wish there were more books like this to encourage young people of color to consider science and engineering as a career!

"My Summer Find"
I 'found' this book while browsing in the public library, waiting for my kids as they participated in the summer reading program. Living in NC, the subtitle, 'A Novel of Passion and Mystery in the Blue Ridge' caught my eye. This was a great book. Too bad it's not easy to find as you don't have to live in NC to appreciate and enjoy it. EVE'S MOUNTAIN is about a mountain owned by a wealthy businessman who has promised to keep the place as is, in memory of his wife who went missing there one summer many years before. Now the owner is there trying to recover from a stroke, bringing family members and others who all seem to be trying to escape from something. The mystery of Eve's Mountain eventually involves them all, for better or for worse. Once I got into who was who and what was what, this is one I couldn't put down.

A good introductory book.
This book is a good place to start exploring magic from, especially if you're not from a specific tradition. It makes a change to read a down to earth explanation of magic, and the skills necessary to begin practicing. Unfortunately it won't be the kind of book to go down well with a lot of would be magic weavers, emphasising as it does everyday effort & continual practice. "Gasp" I hear from Sabrina the would be witch, you mean it might be more than lighting a candle with the right oil (which I looked up in the oil & their uses table) in the spare 5 minutes between brushing my hair & perming my lashes?

Marian Greens writing style is also easy to follow, and she has a very open & down to earth way of looking at things, which makes a pleasent change.

This book covers the place of magic in the modern world, the connection of thoughts & the world we hence create, thus emphasising a personal development angle. It also explores the use of planetary influences, ritual, encouragement to explore your beliefs & different paths and is interspersed with exercises necessary to development of various skills.

It is obviously not a book for advanced practitioners, or those with knowledge of the magic arts, but is a very good introductory book for those who know little & are looking for a down to earth grounding & ideas for further exploration.

The Everything Christmas Book
Filled with stories, legends, songs, and recipes, The Everything Christmas Book is a fun read, as well as an authoritative reference. The editors observe that the true spirit of Christmas is a sense of wonder and "this book is intended as a celebration of that wonder."

They begin with the history of Christmas and how it "evolved over many centuries, enduring occasional tribulation, scrutiny, and abolishment along the way." Folklore, such as why red and green are Christmas colors, complements the historical facts. They also explain how decorated trees and Santa Claus became a part of contemporary Christmas celebrations.

The chapters on stories and poems include such well-known tales as Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" and Moore's "'Twas the Night Before Christmas," in addition to other favorites. Music and complete lyrics are provided for forty Christmas carols. The list of Christmas videos contains more than fifty titles.

Do you know in what year "A Charlie Brown Christmas" was first broadcast or when "Miracle on 34th Street" was first released in movie theaters? These are two of the 106 questions included in "The Ultimate Mass-Media Christmas Trivia Quiz." (Answers are at the end of the chapter!)

If you're up to a little traveling, check out the section on local festivities. Tree-lighting ceremonies, parades, Yule log celebrations, feasts, and lighting festivals are available all across the States. The editors provide times and contact information for each event listed.

No Christmas is complete without lots of good food, and the editors have selected a tantalizing sample of holiday recipes, including wassail and "Special Green and Red Vegetable Salad." Recipes are divided into sections for breakfasts and brunches, appetizers, side dishes, main courses and accompaniments, sweets and desserts, and drinks.

The next chapter offers recipes for gift-giving. And yes, it does include fruitcakes!

The editors conclude with a section on how Christmas is celebrated in other parts of the world and a discussion of Hanukkah and Kwanzaa.

The Everything Christmas Book is an ideal gift for people of all ages and interests. Be sure to get a copy for yourself also--it will soon become a treasured favorite.

Informative and fun
I am a serious painter and I refer to this book often. It is a collection of advice and demos from many contemporary artists. Landscape, portrait, and still life are all represented. The artists' works are quite varied, so the result is interesting and fresh. I enjoy this book and think other artists will too.

Good reference to keep on the shelf
This book is quite thorough--probably more information than a person can internalize in one reading, but it's a good book to keep on the shelf in case you need to brush up before a special function (such as formal dinner, job interview, etc.)
