Kohut's Practical Side
This collection of lectures is such a welcome change from his meticulously written texts. Kohut was a genius. This theories are brilliant - but his writing is complex, bordering on tangential. That's not a problem in this collection. Additionally, Kohut's theoretical explanation of self psychology is brought to life with many practical examples. In certain instances this text is like a "how-to" for the beginner and experienced to profit from. The most disturbing aspect of this work is how much longing it inspires. Those lucky advanced students got so much from a genius. They were priviledged to see his "real" and practical side. He let his guard down while filling their minds with the wisdom of his experience. You may find yourself wishing you were one of those lucky candidates at the Chicago Institute.

A good general look at the history of western architecture
Wodehouse and Moffett do a good job of jamming the whole history of western arcitecture into an easy to read compact work. They cover the biggies and touch on the lesser known but important works. There are ample illustrations and notations to diagrams and photographs. The writing is interesting and not full of boring technical jargan. This book is an excelent jumping off point for a time period or to get an overview of architecture in general. There is so much information one could get bogged down in, especially in the past century of architecture, but Wodehouse and Moffett charge on ahead without becoming stuck. This book is certanily not the end all of any time period, but for casual scholors of architecture or those who need to know about a building in X time period, this a great book.

Use the Strength of Your Idea
Do you want to say to yourself, with unwavering conviction, "Hey I'm good at this. People listen to me, and they pay attention when I speak?"

Your listener is more apt to listen to you, when the strength of your idea is communicated in a way that they feel comfortable with.

This book is a tool that teaches readers that instead of trying to get your listener to do what you want, adjust your own communication style in a way that is easy for your listener to hear, understand, appreciate, listen to, and want to act upon.

While there are always exceptions, men exchange bottom line information. And women tend more often to communicate to build relationships.

A wonderful example that the author offers to show how to communicate to men is:

"Your colleague has been unable to attend a meeting. He comes to your office after the meeting and asks, 'How did the meeting go?' This is an open-ended question, and as such it implies that he wants a full, general explanation of the meeting. Do not be misled. He does not want a full, general explanation; what he wants is: 'It was a successful meeting. We decided to postpone the sales presentation for a week. John will get back to us about the details.'"

This doesn't mean giving up being who you are. It just means that if you want to experience feeling understood, respected and appreciated you must adjust your communication style in a way for your interlocutor to best receive want you are sharing.

This book is fun to read because Marian Woodall considers enough scenarios to support her points, that even if you don't do some of the social taboos that she has identified in this book, you will recognize yourself as having done them several times in the past - and that is certainly life affirming.

Slow Down, Place Yourself Fully In This Moment,
Although I read this book years ago, I appreciate having learned a great deal from this pocket-size guide on how to turn someone's comment, no matter the circumstance, into my opportunity teach my interlocutor to appreciate my sense of self-concept and my faith in myself.

One of the most important points in this book is that others often ask questions about your progress, not because they really want to know where you are, and how you have traveled along the journey of your project. What they really want to know, by your entire demeanor, now, is that you are confident. They want you to be focused upon solution.

A worthy and timely book
At a time when the measurement profession has become very advanced and technical in orientation, the introduction of this book has come to address an urgent need or should I say filled a yearning gap. In particular the new edition with topics on Rasch model, generalizability theory is most welcome. In a sentence, the new book is special and uncommon by putting together both the theory and practice of test development. For this reason, it is one in its own class.

A really good read with an unusual "Genie" theme!
I really enjoyed this book when I read it for the first time about 15 years ago. It is the classic tale of studious, shy girl (Kerri Stuart) falling in love with popular, out-going athlete (Mike Price) who already has a gorgeous girlfriend.

The background of "Student Genie Week" brings Kerri and Mike together as he becomes her personal genie and makes her wishes his commands!

The book contains some hilarious moments as well as romantic ones as Kerri and Mike compete for "Genie Couple of the Week". Kerri relies on more than a little help from her friends as "The Arabian Nights Ball" - the traditional dance to round off Genie Week - draws ever closer and it looks as though Kerri won't have a date.

The ending has a great twist which will keep readers guessing up to the very last page!
