Exciting, emotionally satisfying Climax
I don't know what happened to the review of this book that I wrote three months ago, but here goes again. This is the concluding book in the four-book Treasure Quest Series, following _Silver Highway_, which was set along the Mississippi River and in Pennsylvania during the late 1850's, _Colorado Gold_, which followed some of the characters west and introduced some new ones as the Civil War was beginning back East, and _Out of the Crucible_. In _Jewel of Promise_ we return to Pennsylvania and to the South as the Civil War begins. Alex and Olivia, who met and fell in love in _Silver HIghway_ are seen for the first time since that book, as they seek to do the little that they can to hold their splintering country together. As southerners, they love the soon-to-be-seceding states as their first home, but as seemingly unlikely recruits to the underground railroad who have come to know and love Quaker friends in the north, they cannot willingly follow their home states out of the Union. After a visit to Alex's family in South Carolina, whom Olivia had not previously met, they return northward amid obstacles created by the newly begun war. Alex and his friend, Mike, who has been recently piloting Alex's riverboat, the Golden Awl, become involved in the Union war effort. Olivia and Beth, a young woman from Kentucky who has run away from home and won Mike's heart, work on the homefront, which in this war is sometimes dangerously near the battlefields. Soon Olivia's brother, Matthew, and her Creole school friend, Crystal, return from the western territories as well, and their hope to remain reunited is tested sorely by the war. For all of these characters _Jewel of Promise_ is a story of hope (symbolized by the brooch that Alex gives Olivia), dangerous captures and escapes, fighting to help others amid hate, hard decisions about political loyalties and love, the difficulty sometimes of being honest with oneself and others, and the struggle to keep hope alive when circumstances appear hopeless. Wells evokes varied scenes at home and in battle and shows vividly how both the many continuing characters and the new ones, like Mike and Beth, grow gradually and believebly. I finished this book feeling sorry that the story was over and that I would not again see these characters whom I had come to care about so much that I had devoured the latter three books of the series in a week of constant reading. Still, Marian Wells had by the end accomplished all that she needed to in order to satisfy a reader's curiosity and anxiety about the characters' experience of the war, so even as I was sorry to leave the characters, I was happy that I had read the books. If you want an exciting historical novel with romance and the added dimension of Christian elements that grow naturally out of the characters, rather than seeming stuck in for their own sake without being necessary, then try the Treasure Quest Series.

History becomes personal
I purchased this book originally to help me pass the time on a business trip in my hotel room - my mother grew up on a farm in Kansas traversed by trail and I had heard stories all of my life - mostly a lot of legends - I had occasion to visit northeast New Mexico several times over the past twenty years and now having read this book I have a deep respect and reverence for those persons whose dreams and visions made possible the taming of the American frontier - I became personally involved in the life story of Marian Russell and came away at the conclusion of the book feeling as if I had heard the story of a close family member - it was as if I were there with her living the story as well - wished there were more

why write a book that is so hard to read? I think that my cleverness is not enough to subtend the hard math.

A rare collection of perspectives
This is a terrific collection of writing by women from around the world, covering the last 100 years. It offers an incredible variety of different perspectives, topics and genres of women's writing--including short fiction, essays, theory and poetry. A great source to check out short works by famous writers and not so famous ones who are often equally interesting.

Marian Anderson, the American voice of the century
I have a fondness for analog criticism and so I like to think in terms of binary pairs. When I think about prominent African-Americans from the 20th century and breaking the color barrier I focus on Jackie Robinson and Rosa Parks after World War II and Jesse Owens and Marian Anderson in the years before the war. I saw a documentary about Marian Anderson that featured marvelous film of her singing, which provided ample proof of why Arturo Toscanini supposedly said hers was a voice heard only once in a hundred years. Her contralto voice was indeed superb, but you also have to be impressed by the dignity with which she went through life. This Journey to Freedom juvenile biography of Marian Anderson features a cover photo that captures that dignity.

James Meadows does an excellent job, not only of chronicling Anderson's life, but also of putting her musical career in context. Like Jesse Owens did in the Olympics, Anderson achieved her first great success in Europe, because white American audiences were not going to listen to an African-American singer. Anderson was equally glorious whether singing classical works in German or Negro spirituals. Her celebrated concert at the Lincoln Memorial on Easter Day in 1939, necessitated by the refusal of the Daughters of the American Revolution to let an African-American sing at Constitution Hall, was one of the most important symbolic act regarding race relations to happen in the past hundred years. Students researching the lives of noted African-Americans will fine the Journey to Freedom series to be a great source of biographical information, and they will certainly find out why Marian Anderson deserves to be remembered. However, you simply have to find a tape or album that allows you to hear Anderson's wonderful voice.

Excellent Biography of a Prominent Woman
This book is a well-written biography of an outstanding woman. The author, Beatrice Siegel, documents the life of Marian Wright Edelman, her education and continuing work devoted to young people. As she pursued her education through college and Yale law School, Edelman participated in civil rights movements with Martin Luther King and became a strong advocate for poor and needy children. During her career Edelman was awarded many distinguided honors, and is presently the Director of the Children's Defense Fund.

Ms. Siegel has recorded in a clear and fluent manner the life of an important woman, and the volume is enhanced by its many illustrations. Very interesting and absorbing reading.
