A Fading Rainbow

A Story about Life
A Fading Rainbow captures life's ultimate meaning through the colourful life of Annabelle Castello Johnson Reed. She grew up in an impoverished hamlet in Trinidad, then circumstances take her to the affluent, urban life. She finds what she had dreamed of - fame, wealth and power. However, she never found truth, love and unconditional happiness which she once knew back in her old hometown. When she grew old and her beauty faded, she adandoned her affluent life and went in search of the life she left in a hamlet called Bristol village. The story is filled with intrigue and excitement and profound messages.

Annabelle's search for happiness
A great book !! It's one of those that you can't put down till you've reached the end ! A tale set in the post-war days of Trinidad with focus on the rural areas of Rio claro and Mayaro. An intriguing web unfolds to readers as the author let the characters recall the past and then bring them back to the present. Each scene is captured vividly and great empathy felt as you ride through the emotions of trying to please others and do things against your will, heartbreaks, grief and being forever plagued by the 'what if' scenarios. The realisation that money did not bring Annabelle happiness but only the simple things in life such as love, truth and family - a worthy lesson to us all.

A story about life
It's a wonderful story about life and its ironies. It says quite profoundly that the grass isn't always greener on the other side, and, wealth and status are not the attributes that make one happy. Annabelle found true happiness in the same mundane hamlet she had left some forty years before in favour of the imminent life. She lived her childhood dream, but it didn't bring her truth and love. She found the true meaning of life only after she returned to her old village. There a sad/sweet ending that will bring a tear to your eyes. It's a story that will leave you contemplating on life's ultimate goal.

Light up your paintings big time
Wow! Where was THIS watercolor book hiding? The techniques Roland Roycraft shares here are seemingly easy; splashing or flowing paint onto paper, masking and more. He also gives some very good hints for composition with clear details. Also value sketches (black and white, showing the density of darks and lights. This is a valuable technique for painters.)

I may not choose to imitate Roycraft's style, but I sure will be incorporating these techniques into my next paintings. If you want to improve your watercolor, I can't recommend this book and his other book on nature enough. They are just great.

Great Atmospheric Paintings
This is a good book for seeing what effective use of masking can do for a painting. Mr. Roycraft's use of masking is an integral (if not THE prime) technique for creating the numerous paintings demonstrated in this book. The other technique he uses is pouring the watercolors onto the surface rather than painting most of it with a brush.

This is not a painting method for anyone not willing or able to know precisely all the places to mask. The sparkling waves of an ocean in one of his paintings must have taken quite some time to mask and most likely needed a detailed pencil sketch beforehand. While the pouring is imprecise the masking is not.

The book has 1 chapter that gives a step-by-step demonstration of his pouring method. One can tell from some paintings produced that this can be a time-consuming method of producing watercolor paintings if the subject matter is intricate or detailed although the results are breathtaking.

I would like to see more demonstrations from Mr. Roycraft and perhaps more details about the masking as part of the process. Statements such as "I masked only the light areas before beginning the painting. This is negative painting in reverse and makes a beautiful abstract pattern." show the thought that guides the final results.

Most of the book shows paintings in a semi-finished state with the final result and some comments on the process and thoughts in creating it. I liked this book very much and would recommend it to any watermedia painter because it helps thinking in terms of positive and negative shapes and light. It also introduces a unique way of painting with watercolors which I suspect would work with fluid acrylics as well.

wonderful atomshere, superior technique
The book amazes me a lot. I particularly like the effect of the pouring. It seems difficult to learn, how to control the color flowing smoothly across the desired area? Is it time-consuming to prepare the masking(questions for Mr. Roland Rycraft) I would like to know some details of the procedure.

Building the Fire
This book is an excellent study of religious expression and gospel music in African-American congregations. Hinson takes his readers through an anniversary service for a gospel group while providing thorough and insightful descriptions of salient aspects of the context for the religious expression that he presents in this sensitive and articulate study. Although Hinson allows for a range of interpretations about what the participants are experiencing in religious devotion, he makes a strong argument that is too easily dismissed in academic research. Namely, rather than explaining away encounters with the supernatural as physical or psychological phenomena, the researcher will gain a different understanding of culture if he or she takes the claims of a believer as a valid starting point for ethnographic inquiry. Hinson suggests that experiencing divine presence provides a new way for readers to truly "understand" what he writes of in this book. I have attended countless gospel services, and Hinson's book provides an excellent resource for gaining a greater awareness of what I have seen as believers "have church." Hinson's methods, theories, and insights as a folklorist provides an incredibly rich and accurate way to complete ethnographic study. This book is also beautifully illustrated with the superb photography of Roland Freeman.

A fine in-depth examination of Afro-American devotions.
Fire in My Bones is an examination of Afro-American gospel surveying the gospel music program as a whole, considering how it works to join performer and audience, prayer and singing into part of the worship service and how Afro-American Christians have made gospel an integral part of their world. Fire in My Bones is a fine in-depth examination of devotions and devotional services.

Education and Enjoyment
I bought this book, because I desire a through knowledge of bears, their life, their existance. Reading this book has opened my my eyes to more than I ever thought there was to learn. I even bought a map so that I could see the areas he describes. If all books about grizzles and bears are this enjoyable, I have alot of reading to do. I now have a new found respect and admiration for the grizzly.

Talking bear is easy to learn!
"Learning to Talk Bear", by Roland Cheek is a must read for anyone interested in the current state of affair of the American Grizzly. Cheek combines his vast outdoor experience as an outfitter in Montana with solid research to provide a thorougly readable and enjoyable book. His main focus in the book is for the reader to walk away with a thorough understanding of grizzly behavior and the complex issues that threaten their existence This is not a book about grizzly attacks, although Cheek does examine several in attempts to understand possible causes of those incidents. It is an exciting book that combines research, suspense and good story-telling to help the reader understand Grizzly behavior. It reminded me of two other books, John McPhee's "Coming into the Country" about Alaska, and Sebastian Junger's "The Perfect Storm." I read "Learning to Talk Bear" while vacationing in Yellowstone and felt much more in tune while in the backyard of "Ursus arctos horribilis"!

Learn bear body language
Bear fear is a given with most people . . so they do what they can to avoid bears and thereby cheat themselves out of wilderness experiences of the kind that may not be able to be had in the next century. Roland Cheek's book goes a long way in the explanation of the necessary dance people will have to learn to do with animals in order for the animals to survive. His book is entertaining, wise and up to date. It is a book that any person who is going to venture into bear country would be wise to digest. There are good stories and illustrations of bear encounters that turned out fine . . . after all the author is still here.

real war letters
Ever since 14 July 1988 when I read Chronicle of Youth with absorbed attention and keen feeling I have been fascinated by Vera Brittain. This fine work, without duplicating Chronicle of Youth, sets out the letters written by her and her brother and friends till all her correspondents were killed in the war. This is a poignant work, well worth reading. One stands amazed and impressed by the eagerness of these Englishmen to serve their country, even though they knew the hell that the Western Front was, and though so much was repellant about the condition under which they soldiered.

WW1, first hand
Anyone who is interested in WW1 and the men and women who lived it, should read this account of the war first hand!

This is what the war really meant to people, both in and out of the trenches, for these are the letters written from and to them.

A thought provoking book, that it is true, is even more shocking.

It is about a generation of people that we should never forget.

a moving and mesmerizing book, worth every penny
I have been interested in Vera Brittain since her autobiography, Testament of Youth, was featured on Masterpiece Theatre in the 70s. I came across this new book by chance when looking for Testament, which my book group is reading and enjoying this month. This collection of letters not only recaptures Vera, her brother, and three close friends, it adds great dimension to their WWI experience. This is a book I will treasure a long time.

Mad Game, now Mad NBA CHAMPION!
I read the book a little while back, and I thought it was a great read on the most electrifying basketball player today. At that time, Kobe was going through a lot of growing pains, a lot of failures, crticisms, bad chemistry with teammates. And now, this season, I've seen Kobe's maturation and improvement in the league, playing more under control, playing in Phil Jackson's triangle offense, having better rapport with Shaq and his teammates. His incredible performance in Game 4 of the NBA Finals in overtime was unforgettable and it is only the beginning. Now he is finally an NBA champion with the Lakers, and hopefully, this will be the beginning of another great Laker dynasty, the first of the 21st century!

One of my favorite books :)
I absolutely love this book. I am a teacher of both English as a Second Language and the gifted, and I have used it with both populations. The space pictures are beautiful, the other pictures are hilarious, and the information is both simply given and interesting. I would take exception to the rating of baby-preschool, both because I know high school students who enjoy it and because there is violence (albeit comical) in some of the pictures. For example, if you look at the playing field, you will see what appears to be a person getting decapitated with a tennis racket.

My Place in Space
As an astronomer and educator, I love to let people know how amazing the universe is. My Place in Space is a fun way to introduce children to the wonders of astronomy and awaken their curiosity. It's especially nice because of the two confident children, Henry and Rosie, who show us that children too can be wise. With vibrant illustrations and accurate text even adults will enjoy it and be left wanting to know more. I have given a copy to everyone I know who has children!

My Place in Space
This book is an excellent tool to use in teaching geography to children. It gives them a visual picture of where we are in the universe as well as helps them to see the size differences between countries, continents, etc. I use it every year with my third graders, and they love it!

Understanding psychological and emotional abuse
Comprehensive Reference on Psychological and Emotional Abuse:

This book provides one of the first comprehensive scientific treatments of an intrinsic topic in the area of domestic violence. O'Leary and Maiuro have compiled a series of cutting edge papers and commentaries on the assessment of various types of psychological and emotional abuse, the relationship of psychological abuse to physical abuse, and the impact of psychological abuse upon victims. Several new scales for reliably measuring such things as dominance, jealous control, denigration of self-esteem, interfering with work or school are included along with data that substantiates the validity of the tools. A form of victim manipulation called "Stockholm Syndrome" is also included in this volume, assisting the reader to understand why the victim continues to return to the perpetrator of psychological and emotional abuse. This resource is also filled with exceptionally current references for additional reading. This book is a good source for domestic abuse therapists, researchers, teachers, and sophisticated readers who want a state of the art reference book on the most toxic component of domestic abuse - psychological and emotional abuse. I would recommend it very highly.

Excellent Book¿Recommended Highly
As an educator, I found this to be an excellent reference book on psychological and emotional abuse. The editors have organized and critiqued a nice assortment of contributions from some of the top people in the field of psychology and domestic abuse. As Dr. Maiuro points out in his introductory chapter "Sticks and stones can break your bones, but names (as well as other forms of derogation and abuse) can also hurt you." While some of the work is technical and appropriate for advanced students and professionals, it is clearly written and includes actual tests that are used to determine whether someone is psychologically abused. I highly recommend it.

A Must For All Clinicians
An excellent compendium of the latest issues regarding violent relationships. Challenging, informative, disturbing, and immensely useful not only for front-line therapists and counselors, but for anyone interested in the topic.

More Than a Book.....
Jeff Hutner, Editor of the New Paradigm Digest said it best for me:

More than a book, Radical Therapy is a path to reconnecting to our soul's wholeness; a simple, elegant, effective and profound healing tool. More importantly, Radical Therapy is a way into the underlying Unified Field of Love that lies beyond the pain of the separation of our original state and the constant defense of the self-created ego prison most of us inhabit. In this breathtaking tour-de-force, Allen L. Roland, PhD, delivers simple truths that leap off the pages into your mind, heart and soul. Partaking in your own Radical Therapy assists in the penetration of long forgotten territory accessed through embracing our pain and surrendering to the exquisite field of love we have held ourselves from experiencing at great cost individually and collectively.

Radical Therapy goes where no therapy has gone before and delivers. Not content to promote more co-dependent therapist-client relationships that go on for months or years, Allen Roland is a wise teacher, coach, therapist and friend whose process is a proven path to liberation and discovery of our unique role in the unfolding story of life. Hundreds of his clients have made the journey he provides in this guide to self liberation. He proves once and for all that enlightenment is truly an inside job and that by ending our quest for answers from outside sources we may find our own truth.

This is the book we have been waiting for. It goes beyond all the wonderful partial answers and goes to the heart of the matter which it turns out is love. Drawing on the work of Einstein, Jung, and Chardin and sharing personal stories that describe liberated moments and states in his life and the lives of others, Roland provides a clear understanding that is the foundation of his powerful work with clients.

Were I to recommend one book that should be read by everyone, it would be Radical Therapy. Should it find the widespread audience it deserves, those liberated individuals could impact a world deeply out of touch with itself, filled with shadow projections that threaten our very existence. Liberated of our self-imposed prisons, connected to the Unified Field of Love and our unique part in the unfolding plan of humanity, non-linear, synchronistic, quantum events might unfold literally altering humanity's path towards inner peace, peace on earth and our co-creation of heaven on earth. It's a possibility worth our attention.

I pray this book reaches a worldwide audience in the millions thirsty for its deep truth and wisdom. Perhaps it will not just speak to those on the path, but those who are most blocked, most afraid to face their shadows and deep seated pain-people in places of power whose decisions usually help to continue the separation but could potentially liberate themselves and the world if they are willing to do the work of Radical Therapy. For this book is not just a prescription for individual transformation but that of the collective soul.

In the meantime, as individuals, we can reconnect with the loving place we all came from, alone, with a friend or therapist.and in only seven, two-hour sessions!

If you are reading this review, it is not an accident. Trust that you have connected with a long forgotten place in yourself and the world that seeks expression now. In this very moment, don't hesitate, go to origins website (originpress.com) and read more about this wonderful book and, if it resonates and you are truly ready to embark on the most difficult and powerful undertaking of your life, you may order your passport to a new world. If you are ready to surrender your old patterns and dive into the Unified Field of Love Allen illuminates, you can rest assured this is a journey you will not return from as the person who embarked upon it. You will never be the same. You will die to your old self like a snake shedding its skin, a caterpillar transformed into a butterfly or a pollywog who transforms into a frog and in that conscious dying you will be free at last to be your authentic self and give your special gift to a world awaiting it.

Once alive and glowing in the Unified Field of Love, you will act as a mirrored catalyst to others in your family, your work environment, school, or community, a living invitation to take their own sacred journey, And in so doing, you will be connecting with the deepest aspect of your Self, others and the Unified Field of Love that animates all life in all dimensions, which will in turn, be amplified and accelerated again and again resulting in more and more connections of the field to itself leading to the possibility of conscious evolution and the materialization of the Unified Field of Love as Heaven on Earth.

Enjoy the ride....

As a professional photographer, I can appreciate the creative portraits that were chosen for this lushly produced photo driven cook book. The restaurant is fabulous and I am excited to be able to now create the dishes at home. Although, it will be hard pressed to re create the simple elegance of the restaurant, I will save a bit of money by cooking these great recipes in my own kitchen.
