A very well-written student-friendly textbook
One of the best parts of this text book is the beautiful array of supplementary figures and graphs. Many worked out examples provide the reader with a thorough knowlege of the concepts before diving deeper into theory and application. This text book starts at chapter 11 (the reader should have had at most 2 semesters of calculus)

Chapter 11 on vectors and geometry of space offer a solid foundation for understanding basic vector functions and operations (dot and cross product, projection and components, etc.), 3-D geometrical shapes (paraboloid, hyperboloids of 1 or 2 sheets, etc.), as well as applications for both, also cylindrical and spherical coordinates.

Chapter 12 on vector-valued functions initiates the idea of rate, velocity, and acceleration vectors and their relationship including vector differentiation, tangent and normal vectors, and arc length and curvature.

Chapter 13 does a wonderful job introducing functions of several variables, using limits, differentials, partial differentiation rules, gradients, max/minimization, and applications.

Chapter 14 on multiple integration is much easier to understand using this text than others. Lots of physics applications using area, volume, center of mass, moment of inertia, and change of variables.

Chapter 15 returns to vectors with topics such as curl (with physical interpretation), divergence, line and surface integrals, Green's thm, Stoke's thm, flux, and parametric surfaces.

Chapter 16 concludes the text by introducing differential equations. Basic concepts, separation of variables, exactness, homogenous equations, and power series solutions offer both as a learning tool and as somewhat of a refresher course.

Overall, the book is very well-written, from the introduction which illustrates the many advantages of calculus over algebra, the insight into careers using mathematics, to the appendices with proofs of theorems, basic differentian rules and answers to odd-numbered exercises (even exercises for the first 10 chapters), this book is a work of art for any math and/or science student.

Excellent Personal Introduction to Islam and Muslims
This author clearly has a deep love for his Muslim friends and communicates both a scholarly understanding and an intimate look at Muslims. I've used this book as a required text when teaching students to understand their Muslim neighbors. Dr. Miller's writing is colorful, personal and engaging. This is anything but dry reading!

Side splitting stories from real newspapers.
I first got interested in buying this book because of the column appearing in a local newspaper. It was a compilation of weird stories from around the world. I bought the book and loved it. The stories are short and so the book is great to read a little at a time or in long sittings. Some of the stories are so funny I had a hard time breathing from laughing so hard. The people on the bus I take to work thought I was crazy. Get this book!

A sociologist looks at homeschooling and sees the future
Meighan does not waste a lot of words about whether or why homeschooling is good - he presents research data that shows homeshcoolers do better both academically and socially. He then moves on to examine how come all these parents, with no degrees in education and no government guidance, can do better than schools. He suggests that in order to improve, schools should adopt the same methods that homeschoolers use.

An invaluable source book on n. Californan native cultures
For many years this classic book was out of print and difficult to find. This is a rich and complete anthropologic study of the varied native cultures of northern California. Long before Kroeber brought Ishi out of the woods, Dixon spent his life researching and living among the disappearing native cultures of northern California. First rate source book!

Open Schools -- a forgotten moment in education
Roland Barth's book recalls a wonderful intermezzo in education, between the nuclear terror of the 1950s and 60s and the grinding pressures of education reform that took off during the 1970s in the US. We chose open classrooms in the public schools for our young children and would do so again, but the public schools are now so fearful of the testing plague that they have all but forgotten this innovation. Barth's book reflects a teacher's practical experience with a non-authoritarian approach. It would of great interest and use to many younger parents today if Barth could survey what has happened to the open education movement since he wrote this book and point out the few but notable schools that are still involved in it.
