Excellent Calculus Text
This is the best calculus book I've used. I purchased as a student after finding it in the library, despite it not being the required text for school. Concepts are explained well and a variety of examples are clearly worked out in each section. I highly recommend this book.

An incredibly valuable resource!
This is an eight-volume history of Africa that I can't recommend highly enough. Patiently working my way through it over the course of several months did more to reduce my ignorance of human history than anything else I have ever done. I found several discussions particularly helpful:

- the physical evidence for human origins in Africa south of the Sahara

- The colonization of Madagascar by voyagers from Malaysia, which introduced the banana and several other valuable food crops into Africa in classical times

- How the conquest of valley-dwelling, agricultural Hutu by hilltop-dwelling, cattle-herding Tutsi serendipitously benefited both cultures, since manure from Tutsi cattle enabled greater Hutu cultivation of the banana

- How the Iron Age came to Africa south of the Sahara (this was what led me to this work in the first place)

- The breadth and depth of Arab learning and philosophy at the height of the Muslim empires during Europe's Middle Ages

I did find the discussions of late-Christian Egypt and Arab civilization more difficult to follow than the rest, because these discussions make heavy use of italicized Egyptian and Arabic words without bothering to explain them to the non-expert reader. This forced me to keep going back and re-reading earlier passages as I figured out these terms' likely meanings from their context in later passages.

Overall, however, this is a work I would love to have on my own bookshelf, if it weren't so very costly to purchase. The copy I read belongs to the King County Library system. (Seattle and Redmond, Washington, are the best-known cities in King County.)

A Wonderful Tool for the new Social Studies Teacher!
As a new Social Studies teacher I found it hard to find any material on the usefulness of certain materials and good suggestions on the use of them in the classroom. This book had both! I also found that this books provides a wonderful critique on how minorities are portrayed in Social Studies Textbooks, in the past and present. This book also gives suggestions for lesson planning and unit planning which I found very useful and comprehensive. Overall this was the best Social Studies teaching guide I have yet to encounter and am thankful to the authors for writing it. Thank you.

Superb fast paced casino heist by counterfeit gaming chips
Roland S. Jefferson has written a high concept novel about the Las Vegas Scene in the 1980's.The protagonist of this exciting tome is an alienated loser named Bernie who assembles a team of high stakes gamblers to help him pull off a heist of the Vegas casinos by counterfeiting the gaming chips and exchanging them for cash. Written is a style that reminds one of the late, great Chester Himes or even more like James Jones. With meticulous attention to detail, Jefferson is especially skillful with character descriptions and their interplay with one another. His development of Bernie's cold, detached, indifference, especially in his relationship with Janine, the only female member of his criminal enterprise is especially brutal in it's depiction. If you want to know how it ends, you'll have to read it. But I guarantee you won't be disappointed...especially since Las Vegas has, in the years since this novel was written, converted itself into a family playground. A Card For The Players is like going back home again, to the Las Vegas we remember. Not the corrupt infant of the Bugsy Siegel days, but the Las Vegas of Ocean's Eleven or 5 Against The House. I can't wait to see the movie

examples and activities give you a real feel for chaos
As a teacher attempting to introduce chaos theory into high school physics and mathematics classes, the book gave many examples of practical activities. It also gave many examples of how chaos could and would become useful. There are currently so many false methods being used to integrate subject matter in education; chaos theory has great potential to demonstrate clear connections between arts, sciences, and social sciences, and Peak and Frame in a simple manner bring this to light.

Short, sweet, illuminating . . .
If you want the overview of the history of the Christian Church by a writer of great skill and sincerity, this is the right book for you. No footnotes. Not a lot of scholarly depth. But what it does have is a lively prose style and a very good selection of events to tell the story of the Church. Christians should know at least something of the history of the Church. Bainton's book will serve as an excellent starting place.

Chocolate Legs
I love the folksy style of author Roland Cheek. He is not a bear biologist, but he knows his bears!!!

A Pleasure, as always.
Thanks again for yet another Montana Masterpiece. Your blend of fact and personal insight into the lives of bears was a most enjoyable experience. I read most of the book while traveling abroad and it made me feel like I was still home in Whitefish. Way to go Roland!! By the way, it was great meeting you and Jane.
