First-time translations of two early works of Augustine
This book contains a pair of unfinished works by Augustine on the Book of Genesis. The table of contents is as follows:

Introduction (Roland J. Teske)

Entries from "The Retractions" on the two works

"Two Books on Genesis against the Manichees"

"On the Literal Interpretation of Genesis: An Unfinished Book"

General Index

Index of Holy Scripture

Augustine regarded the interpretation of Genesis as important to Christian belief, but also found it difficult. These works were his two first attempts at writing interpretations of it, but he thought them only partly successful and did not see fit to complete them. Neither work is to be confused with Augustine's "The Literal Meaning of Genesis", which is a later and much longer work on the same subject that he successfully completed (that work is available in two volumes from Paulist Press).

Augustine's special interest in Genesis had two roots: apologetic and theological. His apologetic interest was a response to frequent attacks on Genesis by non-Christians and what he felt were inept defenses of it by uneducated Christians. His theological interest sprang from the critical importance of the Fall to Augustine's theology.

The first work, "Two Books on Genesis against the Manichees", was primarily apologetic. It was written not long after Augustine left the Manichees to return to the Church, and was intended as a rebuttal to the Manichee attacks on Genesis. In this context, Augustine discussed Creation, Eden, and the Fall, but the work ended there - Augustine felt that he had not yet learned enough to complete the task he had undertaken successfully. The section on Creation was largely literal - reading it as a record of events that had occurred, but the section on Eden and the Fall was largely allegorical, reading it for the spiritual truth within the literal account. The chief interest I found in the work was that the description of the Eden and the Fall shows the strong influence on Augustine of classical virtue ethics, but none of the theology of Original Sin that is of such importance in his later writings.

The second work "On the Literal Interpretation of Genesis: An Unfinished Book", was aporetic in character: in it, Augustine deepens the reader's understanding of the text by raising questions about it rather than by giving answers. This work was written not long after the previous one, and again Augustine found himself ultimately unequal to the task he had set. This work is even shorter than the previous one, and gets less far into Genesis, ending after the Creation days. I found the work pleasant to read; the aporetic style provides a sense of intimacy - that the author is sharing not only his answers with the reader, but also his questions, even if he doesn't have an answer to give.

The supporting material in the book is quite good - the only fault I would find is that the introduction generally refers to works by the abbreviations of their Latin names, which made me break from reading the text to his table of abbreviations (about 30 in all) far too often, a fault compounded by the fact that English translations for the titles in that table were not provided. Still, this is a pretty minor quibble.

As a final note, thanks are due to Teske and CUA Press for providing the first translation of these works into English.

Well produced photo/reference book
A beautifully produced (and large size) history/reference of FDR. It gives a solid general overview of his life and career, but the best feature has to be the large photos throughout (be sure to consider getting the more sturdy hardbound edition)...

Grounded feminist ritual
For such a small book, the author offers tremendous history and application of feminist liturgy to institutional settings. If you're looking for ritual or liturgy for social justice and/or affirmation of women in liturgical settings, this is a wonderful resource. I found it marvelously affirming of my liturgical and spiritual journey.

An anatomy of love
This is a most wonderful, erudite exploration. It is best in French but the English version is quite scrupulous. An excellent means to understand your own sufferings in love, it provides an anatomy of its stages. The best gift you can give to the suffering, lovers and people you are fond of.

This book is a gem
Although the Amazon text says that the last edition is 1988, I have a copy which was first published in Britain by Sphere Books in 1990 and re printed in 1991.

Since finding my copy in a second hand book shop in Rochester in Kent some years ago (and paying a mere £2 for it) this little gem has travelled to France with us on several occasions.

So far we have not been disappointed, far from it, we have been greatly impressed with the restaurants selected for inclusion in the book.

In our experience the restaurants included are not necessarily the most expensive or most economic just very good in terms of value and quality. We have found eating places which would suit all tastes.

The individual entries are in much the same style as the UK's Good Food Guide. Two or three restaurants per page with name, address, phone number, name of owner, general notes concluding with pros, cons, price level and any special information about days not open etc.

The layout is alphabetic by town/city so you don't need to know the geography of France to find your way around the book.

I am looking for a later version that the one I have, but until I find it my tried and trusted 1991 copy will go with us every time we cross the Channel.

From Ball's Bluff to Gettysburg... and Beyond: The Civil War Letters of Private Roland E. Bowen, 15th Massachusetts Infantry 1861-1864

A must for anyone with an interest in the 15th MVI.
Bowen's letters are wonderful to read. In an age when posturing and gallantly posing was openly admired, Bowen shows a remarkably unvarnished and very human side of his life in the 15th MVI. The editor, G. Coco, has added tremendous amounts of research and filled in the background of many of the people, places and incidents with which Bowen was so familiar. An absolute must for anyone with an interest in the history and genealogical aspects of 15th MVI.

This is a manifesto on African American soul survival!
This is a must read for anyone concerned with uplifting African people in America. It details the life of an ex-con turned Presidential advisor turned crack addict...Gilbert somehow saves himself from self-destruction and establishes SIMBA, INC., the Oakland,CA-based 12-year rites-of-passage mentoring program (the nation's only) for African American youth. The co-author, Cheo Tyehimba, an award-winning journalist, weaves Gilbert's narrative with uncompromising honesty and has a brilliant flair for creative non-fiction. His upcoming novel, "Drum Sold" will be published in the spring 1999.Look for it!

Although, the book is currently out-of-print, I've heard that it can still be purchased from Simba, Inc. the non-profit org. represented in "The Ghetto Solution." And all proceeds go to support the organization.

Comments on this work......
For those interested (seriously or curiously) in Globalization this is one the central pieces to be read. The book provides a sociological framework for the analysis and understanding of the meanings of the term and how the world came to be as it is. It is a serious work, grounded on the most serious sociological thinking. In general terms, we could say that this work has a serious cultural perspective on the subject matter. The book has been translated to 6 languages (I translated it to one of them) and has been regarded as "a treaty" on the subject matter. The author himself has been regarded by scholars in the field as one of the leading theorists in the subject matter. My personal opinion is that this book is becoming one of the centuries masterpiece in the theorization and problematization of globalization. If you want to know more about the book, look for book reviews in the Sociological Abstracts or email me: barrosoj@hotmail.com

Spring comes to Texas from the Valley to the Panhandle
Wonderfully delightful book about spring in the Lone Star state. The 50 chapters discuss indicators of spring from a personal perspective by the author and numerous friends and colleagues, from naturalists to housewives, and from the Rio Grande Valley to the northern plains, including the first dueting of chachalacas in the Valley; greening mesquites; returning vultures in the Big Bend; night skies and black-hawks in the Davis Mts.; butterflies and violets in the pineywoods; mt.laurel, anemones, Texas bluebonnets, and golden-cheeked warblers in the Hill Country; to singing meadowlarks on the northern plains. This book is truly a fresh view of spring, and filled with neat stuff about nature in Texas. Well worth the read!
