The life and times of famous composer Antonio Vivaldi
In reading some of the books in this Famous Composers Series it is surprising how many great composer were not considered great in their own lifetime. Antonio Vivaldi was a brilliant violinist and a gifted teacher, but apparently audiences grew bored with his concertos, church music, and opera during his lifetime. Like Mozart he died poor and alone in Vienna. This book by Roland Vernon is quite informative, working in all sorts of details about the times in which Vivaldi lived while chronicling the musician's life. For example, while talking about Vivaldi's childhood in Venice we learn all about the Doge and Patricians of Venice and the city's most impressive church, St. Mark's Basilica. But the focus is on Vivaldi as a musician and how he was a pioneer of the concerto, who explored new ways of composing solo instrumental passages to be placed between sections of orchestral music. However, all this wonderful information sometimes gets lost because these volumes are full of color illustrations. Ian Andrew provides some contemporary artwork to covers the specifics of Vivaldi's biography, but what really stands out are the historic paintings and contemporary photographs that give us a sense of the 18th century Venice in which he wrote and played music. I have seen a lot of books about famous painters that are not as well illustrated as the volumes in the Famous Composers Series. Other titles in this series introduce us to Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Gershwin, Mozart, Stravinsky, and Verdi. As always, it is recommended that young readers being introduced to Vivaldi, or any other composer, should listen to the famous musician's music while reading such a book.

A hammer!
R. Stull makes a comprehensive and profound review of the boundary layer meteorology in his book. I consider this book to be a most useful tool for any scientist concerned with the troposphere, for all environmental engineers having to do with air quality, and for all micrometeorologists. Just like a hammer! One of the first to get for one's library. It contains the general descriptions of the usual subjects, thoroughly and well explained. Then it also contains extensive descriptions of different models used to make calculations. This is why I am willing to pay its... unfortunately not-very-low price.

Christians are not restricted to literalism with Gen. 1
While most experts in the area of Creation/Evolution debate have their audience believing the entire dilemma revolves around scientific method and accompanying extremist propaganda, there are some biblical scholars who want people to understand that the issue should never have progressed to the scientific level. We need to take a step back and examine the traditional hermeneutical method applied to the Genesis creation accounts, and do so in light of the ancient Hebrews' neighboring cosmologies. Frye has edited a book of contributions from scholars who herald this message: the issue exists today because of neglect of authorial intent in Genesis, invalid criticism hurled at the scientific community, and because some literalists want to attribute motives of anti-theism and anti-morality to scientists. While I favored Conrad Hyers' contribution entitled, "Biblical Literalism: Constricting the Cosmic Dance," all contributions are intelligently well versed. I especially appreciated Hyers' article because he identifies how our literalistic present day culture forces a shade over our eyes as we read ancient literature, which is part of the crux of the issue. People fail to recognize that the literalists have misidentified the literary genre of the Genesis creation accounts. The credibility of Christianity as being an intellectual faith is at risk because of the Creation biblical literalists, and by publishing this book, Frye acknowledged that he refuses to standby and watch. It is September 2001 as I write this. Many new books on the Creation/Evolution controversy have hit the market the past few years. It is my hope that Frye's book will be reprinted in light of the recent surge in interest of this dilemma.

a very short book, but damn good
ISBN 0-441-38294-0 Ace Books first printing Nov 1982. A large format book, unusual in the 1980's with illustrations, and large print. Why they didn't just combine this book with Storms of Victory (Janissares 3) I have no idea, because it was 1/2 of the original book. Easy logical progression of the original. Rick Galloway and his men have their hands full -changing weather patterns, growing madweed, spreading technology, revolting nobles, reuniting Rome and preparing to survive the nuclear winter if he succeeds.

This book should be in every upper elementary and junior highschool library within the red wolf's former range. Smith does anexcellent job of explaining all aspects of saving an endangered species and getting it back into the wild. The book is filled with beautiful photos, and the text is informative and readable. His use of dialog at the beginning of each chapter draws in the reader. A truly wonderful book!

Stunning! Appropriate depiction of the Island of Kahoolawe.
There are numerous piture books of Hawaii. Most of them intend to vividly illustrate the touristically 'paradiced' Hawaii. However, the pictures in this book, it seems to me, correctly illustrate the history of the Island of Kahoolawe as a bombing target of US military for a long time. Personally, these pictures inspired me so much that I could set another goal for the pictures I am taking.

A very good book for experimentalists
This book is an excellent book if you wish to have a diverse knowledge of time honored spectroscopy techniques. Menzel gives a brief description of quantum mechanics that you probably will not understand unless you already have a good background in quantum theory. The rest of the book is applications, applications, and applications! This is not a book that gets heavily involved in the mathematical theory, infract Menzel specifically states that few equations are given. If the mathematical theory is what you want, then this is not a book that you should buy. However, if you are interested in understanding how laser spectroscopy is used, and how to setup a multitude of experiments then this is an excellent book. There are allot of figures, and block diagrams to refer to, and the book is very easy to read and is understandable even if you have little background in laser spectroscopy. However, Menzel has made the assumption that the reader does have a background in the sciences, specifically physics and chemistry. This book gets an A+ from me.
