Intriguing
Is it fact? Fiction? Expand your mind by reading this book. This dramatized account of contacts with spiritual beings makes one wonder. What part is true? How much is due to Mr. Harris' imagination? The answer is left to one's own experiences and how it corresponds to the value of the spiritual truths that Harris reveals.

Truly an impressive book
When the book arrived, I was indeed surprised to see that the author had written me a personal greeting on page 2! That's a first! Thanks alot Fred, I will send you a more extensive thank-you on email... As for the content - this is one goldmine of a book which I hope more people will enjoy. It really shows that the essence of the Urantia Book lives on, and with renewed force!

Heartwarming and life-changing
When I first started reading this book, I did not realize how much I was going to learn! I expected it to be a story about a man who discovered some spiritual truths along the way and his experience with The Urantia Book. Much to my delight, there were actual exercises that I could apply to my everyday life - effective immediately. There's the 1-2-3 exercise that you can put into practice right away. It even teaches you another way of looking at the people in your everyday life. Just a slight change of perspective can have such life-changing effects.

The basic message is about love and how to get there. The author, through two characters in the book, demonstrates how these two skeptics grew in spirituality, service and love. I have been looking for ways to be of service to others since reading this book ... I don't want to give away too many details - but I would tell you, if you're on any kind of spiritual path - read this book. You won't regret it.

A forever treasure
Beautiful, brilliant and witty. Once you have the book, you'll never forget it, and you'll probably keep wanting to show parts of it to fellow fans. However, in the name of humor, the book is a little cruel to some players -- for example, "Hal Griggs was to pitching as Wayne Causey was to hitting -- that is to say, nothing." Even as a kid I was made uncomfortable by things like that. But, some of those things, I just LOVED, like the teasing about how ugly Don Mossi was and about how lousy a hitter Hank Aguirre was ("...I mean to tell you, he couldn't even come close..."). So, where should they have drawn the line? Heck if I know. Also, the book seems to show a bias toward players from Boston and Philadelphia, giving them more space than they deserve, and a lot more kindness. But actually I enjoyed that, since, as a New Yorker, I've always been embarrassed about the disproportionate attention that is usually given to the Yanks and Mets. It's nice to see a couple of other towns getting their turn.

A great book for baby boomin' baseball card lovers!
This is a fantastic book! It took me back 40 years! What's actually great about this book is the interview with Sy Berger, the head of the Topps Sports Chewing Gum Department. It gives a brief history of Topps and reveals some information that can not be found today. What's even more precious about this book is that it helped me prove that one of the hobby's self-proclaimed experts doesn't know what he's talking about. A must have book!

I've worn this book out. Twice.
I can't imagine what the meeting must have been like between the original publishing agent and the authors of this book. They want to do a book about WHAT? How Bubble Gum and Baseball Cards became intertwined? And then you want to fill the book with sarcastic comments about some of the lesser-known (for the most part) players to make it to the Major Leagues? Oh, yeah, the public will just EAT that up.

Well, they got their book. First in hardcover, and then in Pocket-Book style softcover, which is where I first found it in 1974. I carried this book with me religiously whereever I lived; through college and into married life, always going back to read my favorite parts again and again.

Finally, the book was reprinted a few years ago in "deluxe" paperback style. Just in time, too--my original copy had lost its cover and several pages.

Now I see that the replacement copy is falling apart from overuse, too.

Could somebody please republish this book and keep it available forever as a public service?

Amongst the highlights: Boyd & Harris's recollections of Smokey Burgess, Choo Choo Coleman, Sherm Lollar and many more; their collection of bizarre baseball nicknames, which covers two whole pages of the book; and some of the strangest baseball cards anywhere, with pithy comment to match (the guy with the baseballs nailed to the bat is still one of my favorites).

Spend what you must to get this book and guard it with your life. Oh, and enjoy!

Excellent Book
As a parent of an Autistic child, I purchased this book when my son was first diagnosed. It has a wealth of information and helped me better understand the few treatments available and the state of research on the disorder. It is a technical book, and not for all parents, but it is dog-eared in many sections from my use. I hope there is an update in the near future.

A definitive reference book
Neither cheap nor a light read, but just what it says - a definitive summary of the state-of-the-art in knowledge about autism and the other pervasive developmental disorders. Everything you need to know is in here.

Aimed at Professionals; Great for Parents, Too
Second book I read when trying to figure out whether my son had autism/PDD. Not for the parent who is faint of heart, but excellent, balanced, and objective resource for the parent who wants a deeper understanding of the research literature. Depending on your educational background, some chapters may be incomprehensible (e.g., the chapter on neurochemicals), but almost all are accessible to the well-educated and attentive layperson.

There's Fred!!!
What a wonderful book! I've seen Fred Wesley live playing with Maceo Parker and the JB horns. He's down with the funk and he's been everywhere and seen everything. JB, Maceo, Ike and Tina Turner, LA and trying to make it playing an acoustic instrument soulfully in an age of production. The great thing about this book is that Fred seems to write with a minimal agenda. He's not a charting artist who's trying to magnify his own star, he just lays it down honestly. Anybody down with James Brown will gain from his insights on why musicians stuck through and put up with James' abuse and degradation.

Surprises for me were the tales of Count Basie and his life in LA. I didn't realize that he had overcome so much personal stuff by the time that I had seen him. This is a very readable insightful book that I recommend without qualification to anybody interested in funk. Let's hope Fred gets his due and we get more books from the perspectives of the musicians that make the music we love happen.

Like being backstage and onstage with Fred
I had the privilege of meeting Fred Wesley just a couple of years ago. A very down to earth man and as fine a musician as you can find. I was thrilled to see that he had a book in the works and it exceeded my expectations.

His recollections are detailed and straight up..... good, bad, and indifferent. The book is segmented into the various, specific phases of Wesley's career. Each is filled with insights and gems that read as though he were talking directly to the reader.

I read the whole thing and then went back and cherry-picked through specific chapters a second and third time.

Just great!

I'm not even a music lover
Yet I couldn't put this book down.
My husband bought this book because he's a big fan of Fred Wesley and he loves jazz and funk.
I picked the book up to glance at the pictures and I was hooked. You don't have to be a music fan to love this book
It was like reading a great story. There was an inside look at a world that most people only see the most public part of.
I recommend it to anyone who wants to read a book that they just can't put down.

5 star review
The book "Immortal Longings: Meeting Jesus Along the Way" is a book that shows great intellect about our religous faith. It is not just a textbook format of religious facts, rather applied to everyday life by a terrific author who has a million stories for everything. It is a book that allows your thoughts to keep wandering even when you are done with the book. It is a book of reality and highly reccomend it to anyone!

Mr. Herron's best book yet
I think that this book is one that everyone should read who questions their faith every now and then. It helps you to develop your own point of view on religion and the teachings of Jesus.

My Own Words...My Own Thoughts
Fred Herron challenges his readers to take their own religious experience seriously. He maintains that it is in listening attentively to our own life experiences that we may be able to recognize the rustlings of the Holy Spirit. His work is grounded in the rich tradition of the Catholic church and is remarkably open to the rich world of culture and contemporary experience. I can't think of a more suitable and effective approach to passing on religious faith to Gen-X'ers or to anyone with a postmodern sensibility!

An essential, if imperfect, guide for Anime fans.
This is solid an knowledgeable work, and an excellent resource for anyone new to Anime (Japanese Animation). The first half of the book covers the history and culture of Anime, and is thorough and well-researched. The second half gives quick synopses of the Anime titles available on video in the US. This section is slightly weaker: it is dating rapidly (unavoidable in such a work), and the synopses tend to be back-of-the-video stuff and not always too informative. On the whole, though, well worth buying.

A wonderful, informative guide
A wonderful guide book for people new to anime. Includes a overview of anime history; year by year breakdown of TV programs released in the States from the 60's to the 90's; a listing of videos released in the states (both in and out of print), and a listing of anime related clubs, retailers, and conventions. Dated now, but still a wonderful resource.

The definitive source on anime released in North America
This is the best book on anime released in North America. The section on anime TV series is interesting as well as informative. It just about covers every series that aired on U.S. television. It also covers the vast genres of anime while it gives informative side notes. It also has brief synopses on a few anime titles as well as a listing of all titles released up to December 1995. To sum it up, I believe that this is the definitive source on anime released in North America. The authors really did their homework in writing this book

My first Chess book
This was the first chess book that I bought about 15 years ago. It was a great way to become addicted to chess... That's why I am giving it four stars instead of three.

However, the book tends to be dogmatic in its openings theory chapters and also to dismiss lines that are actualy pretty solid. After reading the book one ends up with the impression that having the bishop pair is almost a ticket to a win. Nonsense, each position has to be addressed individually. The endings chapter is good for beginners but non-challenging. Middle game plans are analyzed from a tactical point of view in most cases neglecting value to strategic considerations.

This book is good as an approximation to chess but, as a word of advice, do read more advanced tomes and practice. I have seen that testing ideas on the board is a way to see if you are progressing or not.

A Chess Textbook
This is the only chess book I have ever seen that is like a very
interesting and well-written college freshman textbook. Reinfeld
long ago taught a famous chess course at New York University so
I guess that is where he developed it. It covers all the basics
of chess very well and would be good for advanced players as a
reference for what is most important in chess openings such as
the Muzio Gambit, Noah's Ark Trap, etc. There are a handful of
books as useful for the serious novice as this one, but they predate modern Russian/Yugoslav chess too much. Reinfeld is pushing the Steinitz philosopy but he discusses most modern openings stressing their emphasis on strategy.

AWESOME chess book
This is a great book for any interested chess player. It is more easily read then other chess books, it is written for the average person learning chess. tons of examples and moves, and reasons for moves. It is best if you have a chess set so you can setup an example and track the changes on the board, with the book's moves.

And the Core is expanded.
If you have just purchased Vampire: The Dark Ages, then you will want to look deeply into this book. This book contains information to help make vampire chronicles even more dynamic than before. This volume contains a detailed section outlining the various actions and reactions of different religious organizations. I state organizations because too often the word Church is assumed to mean the Holy Roman, or Catholic Church. Although it was a major power in Europe, there were still plenty of other religions in the world; each religion had its own agenda and these are illustrated in the Companion. Now a Storyteller can be sure throw a massive curve into a Chronicle when Cainites are now confronted by not only Catholic clergy, but also pagan and followers of even more remote religions. What basis of belief do the Assamites follow? It is most assuredly not catholicism. With this book, you can get a slight taste for their beliefs, or the beliefs of those in their homelands.

So that is the church, but what about Cainites themselves? The Companion carries the higher level disciplines for the one listed in the Dark Ages core book. The authors have also included more Thaumaturgical paths as well as power to make better Infernalists. This book carries a wide selection of Dark Thaumaturgical paths and rituals. It also carries a few new disciplines altogether. Wait! New disciplines? Who wield them? This volume also adds four new clans/bloodlines. The Laibon, Lhiannan, and Lamia make their possible First Appearances in the White Wolf canon. Their chapters contain information on their origins, structure, beliefs, and discipline just as it does for all others. The one exception is that it also spells out each bloodline's fate. These Cainites do not survive into the modern days, and now you know why. But, I only mention three, who is the fourth?
The Dark ages are a strange time. Not only does it see the "birth" of a new clan, but also the genocidal hunting of another. Yes, the Salubri are still alive at this time and the Companion provides both a clan overview as well as a long listing of Valeren, the Salubri principle power. For all you veterans, Valeren is not the same as Obeah. Now we have the actual power the Unicorns wielded long ago in Enoch, the very power that is said to have temporarily soothed Malkav of his madness. This alone makes the book worth its cost, but the authors have included so much more.

In summary, coupling this book with Vampire: The Dark Ages will only enhance a chronicle. If players feel they done this before, add a few new religious antagonists, or just drop one of the unknown clans into he story to add danger, intrigue, and a huge new enigma to solve. Do not forget to spice the game with the upper levels of Disicplines. You may have a Brujah or a Nosferatu with a ton of Fortitude, but what good is that when you opponent can strike you from across the room without moving? What good is a ton of Potence and Celerity when your weapons shatter upon impacting another Cainite and not leaving the slightest mark? Who said the "things-that-go-bump-in-the-night" in the night do not have their "things-that-go-bump-in-the-night" as well? Can we say Methusala? Sleep well, childer. Sleep well.

Excellent for Dark ages
If a chronicle is hard to build, it is a dark ages chronicle, not because of lack of plot, but excess of it, there's too much going on with the church, also there's chivalry and clan differences begin to break the vampire society. Certainly it is a good time to have a companion to give you few details.

It expands existing disciplines providing new ones, with even new rituals. The blood lines also prove to be interesting characters that players might enjoy, and storytellers trying to run the dark ages chronicle will find this book quite useful.

DA Companion: Absolutely Essential
While Vampire: The Dark Ages is infinitely resourceful, the Dark Ages Companion is infinitely more so. It has detailed information on aspects of the dark ages which will help any chronicle. Included are several new bloodlines, plenty of new disciplines and new powers for old disciplines, and details on several religions. Possibly the most valuable resource is the new data on combat, including the mass-combat for the armies of the day.

All in all, this product is essential to run a complex chronicle, and well-worth the money.

Sound, witty advice for the willing
Mr. Dahr's brief, readable collection of his own thoughts and selected quotes from various well-known thinkers and artists provides sound advice and insightful observations. The Examined Life is not an instruction manual for those looking for easy answers; instead it helps get like-minded readers pointed in the right direction. A useful book both for readers who are already thinking while living and people who have yet to give self-awareness a try.

Great Little Book!
Do you ever wish you had a little notebook with you at those odd moments - in the shower, in the car, on a date - to capture your thoughts, revelations about various life situations? Well, someone's done it for you.

From self-development (learning about the arts, reading more, eating better) to improved relationships (making friends, dating) to personal introspection (challenging beliefs, understanging religion), this book offers simple yet insightful advice toward a more deliberate, purposeful...examined life.

At $..., it's a great investment in yourself and makes a thoughtful gift to someone you care about! Everyone should have a copy. I highly recommend it!

Provocative, Insightful, Memorable
I have been chanting "have a reward system not based on consumerism" and "write your own horoscope" to myself ever since reading this book. Dahr has a way of reaching every reader - his words will resound differently for everyone. Picking up this book will have you trying to examine and improve your life.

A breath of fresh wind.
Amazon said my predicted rating was 4, and they are right. I don't always agree with Fred on everything but he is a great antidote for political correctness. Fred says what most of us think, but are afraid to say. A must read for anyone who feels suffocated by the unrelenting feminization of our country.

A Mind that Pierces the Culture Smog
Fred Reed writes with a hillbilly twang, but this hillbilly has a Ph.D. in life thanks to, among other things, the marines and a life in the journalistic trenches. If you've ever suspected that things might be just a bit different from the reality seen by Naomi Wolfe, Dan Rather, and Jesse Jackson, if you've ever suspected that government dispenses favoritism while pretending that it's equality, if you've ever wondered where our leaders are taking us, this is the book for you. Fred Reed often begins his essays like a country lawyer, with the pretense of the uninformed, but then concludes with the kind of insight that our best minds should be capable of, but all too often aren't.

And after you've read it, you can give it to the neighborhood feminist and then take bets on how far she'll be able to read before going into anaphylactic shock.

Fred Reed - American Prophet & Good Ole' Boy
This is a great book - entertaining, insightful, funny, and thought-provoking - by a superb author. Fred has written for a number of different journals, including Soldier of Fortune and the Washington Times. He has an extremely refreshing, honest style that cuts through the political correctness, liberal censorship, feminist dogma, and racial hypocrisy that surround so many of today's issues. This would be a far better country if Fred Reed were running it. The book is a bargain, and expands on columns on his website. His works on the military, police work, feminism and race in America today, especially on the reparations scam and African-American attitudes, are some of the most accurate, telling, and honest that I've read anywhere. I work in the same general metro area as Fred does, and keep hoping I'll run into him so I can buy him a drink. Until then, I'll keep rereading the book and checking out his website.... Fred Reed is definitely one of those authors who will be highly revered over the years to come. Why not buy his book and enjoy his writing now?
