Another fabulous Ransom-Charters who-done-it

In Chicago, nine years ago, Laura Shay accuses Ben Harvey of raping her. Ben was convicted and sent to prison. Recently, DNA testing proves that Ben never committed the crime. He is released from jail, but the idealist who entered prison is a lifetime away from the person being freed. However, matters for Ben turn worse when his accuser is murdered on his first day of freedom. Law enforcement officials believe Ben, out of vengeance, committed the act.

However, police officer Jeremy Ransom refuses to rush to judgment, thinking that the original rapist might be the killer. With the help of his partner, septuagenarian Emily Charters, he begins to search for the unknown assailant, who he thinks is the killer.

The fifth Ransom-Charters novel, like the previous four tales, is a great blending of a police procedural with an amateur sleuth story, even though Emily's role is a bit less than usual. The dark story line is first rate but tempered by the warm, respectful, and devoted relationship between the lead characters, normally found in a pure cozy. With RANSOM FOR A KILLING, Fred Hunter continues to provide readers with a marvelous mix that turn his tales into a fun time.

Harriet Klausner

An absorbing case.
In the detecting team of Chicago cop Jeremy Ransom and Emily Charter's, Jeremy's elderly and beloved friend, there exists an unlikely yet beguiling pairing of the young and the not so young, the streetwise and the sweetly intuitive. Charters's razor-sharp mind flourished despite her limited fram of reference; Ransom is unusually erudite and proper for a city cop. Ransom does the bulk of the legwork; in this absorbing case, he's intent on unraveling the interlocking destinies of Laura Shay and Ben Harvey, the man whom Laura accused of rape nine years ago. Ben was convicted and imprisoned, but the results of a new DNA test have now set him free. Shortly after his release, Laura if found murdered and Ben, naturally, falls under suspicion. Ben has been traumatized by nearly a decade of incarceration, while Laura was known to be both promiscuous and a second-generation drunk, who mysteriously came into some money soon after Ben's conviction. After Laura's mother dies an untimely death, Ransom is convinced that finding the identity of the true rapist will lead him to the murderer. Charters doesn't have much of a presence in this fifth in the series (which follows Ransom for a Holiday, 1997) beyond noting an odd turn of phrase in Ben's first televised interview after his release. The mutual devotion between Ransom and Charters continues to be both chaste and charming, however, and contrasts dramatically with the tone of the plot, which features doings that are notably darker and tougher than thos ein earlier books in the series.

His sharpest, most urgent case yet.
Ben Harvey just can't catch a break. Eight years ago, he was convicted of raping his Chicago schoolmate Laura Shay, largely on the strength of the scratches she left on his face when he saw her walking dazed and weeping down the street and tried to help her. Now that a DNA test unavailable during his trial has proved his innocence and sprung him from jail, shiftless, alcoholic Laura's been strangled, leaving Ben another legacy of trouble as detective Jeremy Ransom's prime suspect. Yet Ransom's honorary grandmother Emily Charters insists there's more to the case than a simple revenge killing. Why did Laura lie about her attacker's identity? Why did she try in vain to keep the rapist's child? Where did her downtrodden parents get the money to send her away to college, and why did she return home before finishing? And (the biggest question of all) if Ben Harvey didn't assault Laura, who did, and what's he been doing for the past eight years? Though the few suspects--Laura's amorous boss, her disdainful school friends, the rich kid she had a hopeless crush on--are so sketchy and briefly onstage that not even the rapist leaves much of an impression, the resolute focus on these few leading questions gives normally low-key Ransom (Ransom for a Holiday, 1997, etc.) his sharpest, most urgent case yet.

One of the best Christian books on the environment
I'm the director of a Christian environmental website, and I've read dozens of Christian books on ecology and the environment. This is one of my all-time favorites. I love this book! It may very well be the best book on the Biblical basis for environmental stewardship! Buy it for yourself, or buy it as a textbook for environmental study. Outstanding! What makes it particularly unique and special is that it is written by 4 biologists! My only complaint is that there is little or no mention of the great Christian conservationist, John Paul II. It's still very much worth a read.

This is perfect for a glance at the Christian Env. Ethic!
This book has changed my life by showing me how we, as Christians, must take a closer and more careful look at how we have a responsibility in ecology and envirmentalism today. Scripture references make it "an enviromental Bible study" and forces the reader to dig deeper into his or her beliefs. Take time to think about what you REALLY believe and change others by sharing this powerful book!

Foundational resource for advocacy of creation care
This book describes the biblical basis for the caretaking of creation--a relevant issue for all members of the global community. The book is written by four professors who explain the importance of understanding the value of all creation, including human beings. "Redeeming Creation" describes the unique role we humans have in ruling and subduing the remainder of creation as well as some of the consequences that have resulted from our misunderstanding of this role of ruling and subduing. Much published material has focued on ways that Christianity as a religion has exploted creation and exasperated the environmental and social pains of our planet. "Redeeming Creation" illuminates the claim that a correct understanding of the Bible is necessary not only for Christians to live by, but also for all members of the global community to conform to as we seek to address environmental and social injustices.

best of its kind
I have looked through a lot of books on the former Soviet Union and its collapse. Very often, Western authors show clear misunderstanding of the process and how it evolved. I was pleasantly surprised to find a very good analysis in this book. Being a Russian citizen, I discover that it truthfully depicts the history of my country and gives a very thorough picture of what has happened in it before, during, and after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The authors go to great lengths in order to convey their knowledge to the reader and I very much appreciate their work and effort.

class is a misnomer
review by illinois reader missed the main points of the book in my opinion. 1-gorbachev tried to reform system thru democratizing(he succeeded)the system and retaining some aspects of socialism(he failed) 2-Democatization allowed the option for a return to capitalism, formerly outlawed,to be considered as an option. 3-The elite opposed early moves toward perostroika because they feared loss of priveleges when decentralization was attempted 4-The elite then embraced the move to capitalism, despite the opposition of 60+percent of the citizenry, hence the title "Revolution From Above" 5-The USSR did not collapse because it was moribund, but because the elite felt that they could enrich themselves more under capitalism than they already had under the soviets. 6-Socialism may not be dead because it failed in the USSR.The author considers that as a first attempt from which future generation can learn. 7-This is well documented academic work well written and with an unconventional view point.

Class Intrigue in Contemporary Russia
Kotz and Weir start this book with a long detour through Soviet economic history, which is worthy on its own in explaining an often mythologized subject, but really pays off when it explains how the Soviet Union had a very distinct class structure that laid the grounds for the current era. With intelligent sociological analysis they show how the coordinators and bureaucrats who inhabited an allegedly "socialist" system did so for predominantly personal gain, and how they eventually sought and found even more gain in ending that system altogether. Crucial reading for understanding class conflict in Russia today.

superb music photos
an excellent collection of rock photos from rolling stone
beautiful work

Capturing The Moment
This is one of the best photographic books I have ever seen. The photographers who took these photos really captured the feeling and emotions of the artists at the time. All the classic and famous personalities of music are here, from Ike and Tina to Bob Dylan; from Elvis to Bowie to Nirvana; from The Beatles and Stones to Alice Cooper and all that lies between (too too many to list here). An excellent array of both black and white and colour shots. The close ups allow you to see into the sometimes troubled, sometimes happy, but ever changing eyes of these rock icons. The broader shots show some of these bands and performers in their most comfortable and bizarre surrounds. A worthwhile purchase, that allows you to ponder each and every photo for hours and hours. In the back is a complete copy (small version) of the photos together with a who is who. Buy the hardcover; not only is it worth the price, but it will last forever. This is easily the greatest and most comprehensive collection of rock and roll pictures in one publication!

courtney love is on the cover!
the best part was courtney love on the cover, and nirvana on the last page.

Self-Protection Guidebook for Girls and Women (Fred Neff's Self-Defense Library)

This book is the real deal.
The movies and television show women taking on several men with a series of kicks as though it was no more difficult than walking across the street. The reality is quite different. Author Fred Neff has written a self-protection guidebook for women, like me, who want a reality-based approach to defending ourselves. His book is well organized in a way that makes sense from a woman's perspective. First common questions and answers are given about self-protection. Then the book explains common sense ways to avoid getting into trouble so that a physical fight is not necessary. For situations where a physical approach is needed or cannot be avoided, he provides limbering-up exercises, basic body mechanics, describes the sensitive areas of a would be attackers body and teaches you how to defend yourself. The book also teaches you how to escape from the different types of attacks one can ordinarily expect. This book demonstrates an excellent balance between avoiding excessive violence while at the same time providing enough fighting approaches to allow for a physical response if necessary. The fighting techniques supplied seem practical and to me, were not hard to learn. I see this book as a very valuable resource for any woman looking for information on how to protect herself.

SELF-PROTECTION GUIDEBOOK AN EXCELLENT INVESTMENT
Late last year I bought my daughter the Self-Protection Guidebook for Girls and Women. It was purchased after my daughter related a recent incident where a girl in her school had been attacked. Having learned a type of kickboxing at a gym a few years back when we lived in another city, I thought a good book on self-defense would help me teach my daughter how to defend herself. The Self-Protection Guidebook is even better than I expected. The author Fred Neff supplies vital information in a very well thought out and organized way. Provided is a section of the book on common questions asked on self-defense and their answers. The book goes on to build the foundation for self-protection situations. There are sections on safety precautions in the home, while babysitting, away from home, when driving, in public places and on vacation. It then goes on to teach self-defense techniques and tactics for handling the most common self-defense themes. I especially like the way the book gives clear explanations along with good photographs to teach self-protection. My kickboxing training was never so relevant as this book's teachings. The Self-Protection Guidebook cuts out the non-essential and gets to just what is needed. Practicing what is taught in the book with my daughter has made both of us more self-confident, in better shape and more capable of defending ourselves. Our relationship has also deepened through our study of the book. I strongly recommend this Self-Protection book to every woman.

The Art of Self-Protection Never Goes Out of Style
While still in school in the 70's, I read a book that very much impressed me on how to protect myself. Although the exact name of the book and its author was soon forgotten, some of its teachings must have stuck because I was later able to fend off a violent attack using a defense learned in that book. The good feeling I got knowing that I could defend myself, inspired me to study karate, which I found both challenging and rewarding. For that reason, It was like finding an old friend when I recently happened upon a copy of that very same book Self-Protection Guidebook for Girls and Women by Fred Neff. As I reread the book, now so many years later, I realized just how much of a classic work it is in the field of self-defense. This book contains vital information which it explains thoroughly and with just the right emphasis. Where books that are more recent ignore how to handle actual threatening situations, this book clearly gives guidance. It starts right out telling how to avoid troubling situations if possible and then goes on to show you what to do when they cannot be avoided. This book should be on the required reading list for every young person. Yes, it was written for women, but its lessons are valuable for everyone. Sensitivity is shown throughout the text for the predicament someone is put in when she is the victim of attack. Even someone with experience like me in karate will greatly appreciate this book's teachings. I liked it so much that I have now purchased several other books by the same author. After reading all of them, I have gained new insight into the martial arts and started to supplement my training with additional fighting techniques drawn from the self-protection guidebook and the other books by Fred Neff. This book should be on every woman's reading list.

The Sonnets

Classic poetry
The sonnet is one of the more difficult-to-write forms of poetry, with very strict rules on rhyming and lines, and that makes Shakespeare's collection of sonnets all the more impressive. Shakespeare sprinkled his various plays with poetry and songs, but there is something of a different flavor to these works.

Titleless, identified only by numbers, these poems have vivid metaphors and imagery ("let not winter's ragged hand deface," "gold candles fix'd in heaven's air"). The tone of the poetry varies from one sonnet to the next; sometimes it focuses on old age, to love that "looks upon tempests and is not shaken," and simple expressions that can't really be interpreted any other way. Some of it is pretty well-known ("Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?/Thou art more lovely and more temperate") but most of them you won't have seen before.

Even if you're not normally a fan of poetry, the delicate touch of Shakespeare's words is worth checking into. Fantastic.

A great find - It's both volumes
This edition of the sonnets is one of the most important and the description on Amazon is misleading - It is actually both volumes 24 and 25 bound together so you get the complete set It's hard to find this book so it is a great find in this version

Beautiful Collection
Shakespeare's amazing Sonnets are compiled here in this wonderful volume, a great addition to anyone's bookshelf. If you love Shakespeare, then this is a must-have book.

Inspiring reading
An inspiring read for those interested in the relationship between the "real world" of our everyday life and the more complex questions of our existence. Both authors speak with respect, understanding and courage about life in the past (and next!) century. It was interesting for me, a layperson in matters of both science and religion, to feel a strong connection with such complex thinkers. I appreciate philosophical discussion that doesn't leave your heart cold -this fits the bill nicely.

Space and Eternal Life - A Philosophical Dialogue
"Space and Eternal Life" is a profound dialogue between eminent astronomer Chandra Wickramasinghe from Sri Lanka and Daisaku Ikeda, a Japanese scholar and president of the worldwide Buddhist organization called Soka Gakkai International. Both are world renowned poets, Mr. Ikeda having even been named a poet laureate of Japan.

In his foreward to the book, Sir Fred Hoyle states, "Many challenging problems face humankind as we approach the dawn of the new century. This book expolores some of these problems.... "

In closing the discussion, Ikeda states, "The advance of astronomy and unfolding of cosmology will expand humanity's awareness so that it encompasses the entire Earth.... "

Incredibly Diverse in Range
This book, "Space and Eternal Life" is incredibly diverse in its range. It is essentially a dialogue between Chandra Wickramasinghe, an internationally renowned astronomer, and Daisaku Ikeda, leader of Soka Gakkai International, the world's largest Buddhist organization.

In this dialogue, the two men probe some of the deepest aspects of our existence. They touch on everything from Religion to Near-Death Experiences to Nuclear Weapons to AIDS to the Big Bang Theory and more.

As the dialogue unfolds, both the Buddhist viewpoint and an astronomer's view of the world are expressed, side by side, with interesting comparisons between the two.

While at first sight Buddhist philosophy might seem to lack the advantages of the empirical methodology of science in its exploration of the physical world, Buddhism's treatment of psychology, including the idea of many states of consciousness, appears to be remarkably sophisticated in modern terms.

This book also shows how ancient Buddhist ideas of cosmology are in tune with modern scientific thoeries. Fascinating through and through.

THIS STORY MADE ME CRY AS A CHILD
A little boy had a set of tin soldiers that were made from a melted spoon. One soldier was missing a leg because there was not enough metal left over from the melted spoon.

Tossed aside by the boy, the one-legged soldier sees a paper cut out figure of a ballerina. She is poised on one leg and he feels an instant bond. He has found another one-legged toy and believes this to be love.

The steadfast tin soldier has a series of mishaps. He falls off the window sill into a stream. From there, he is transported to a rat infested sewer. He is swallowed by a fish and through an unlikely stroke of luck, winds up back in the boy's playroom with the other toys and the ballerina.

The ending is what gets to me every single time. A gust of wind lifts the paper ballerina up and she flutters into the fire place, winding up a charred heap of ashes. Devastated, the tin soldier joins her. The remaining metal that was once the tin soldier is a charred piece of heart shaped metal.

I still think this is a very sad story. The photographs really emphasize the feeling this story evokes.

great book!
I taught 1st grade for 4 years and all of the teachers in my grade passed this book around at Christmas to read to our class. I cried everytime I read it. It has a wonderful message and my kids in my classroom always loved it! I have now (finally) purchased my own copy of this book to read to my little girl. It is a classic and I know she will love it as much as I do. Every home should have this book to read at Christmastime.

Brilliant! Improves on the original version.
This is a really good book. It has all the characteristic's that made the original a cherished and remembered fairy tale. It is a great gift for any young child, and can be enjoyed by adults too. It maintains the feel of the original tale, but is more like a poem. The art work on each page is beautiful, and the pictures are totally devine. I would recomend buying this for a different and fully enjoyable version of the original.

You'll Glen ShotSaving Tips From This
My favorite golfer here shares some of his game thoughts.

Being one of the best at tempo and scrambling, you'll find some great advice here.

I especially have put his idea of swinging down the line on pitch shots where the ball is snug down in the longstuff.

Readers Will Glean Shot Saving Tips
My favorite golfer here reveals some of his thinking about the game.

Renowned for his tempo, short game and scrambling ability, you'll take away much in these areas.

From reading this, I too now play gloveless. It saves money, I feel the clubhead much better and have much better grip pressure from making this change.

Another tip that has saved many shots in my rounds, is that when the ball is down snug in the grass, play pitch shots down the line.

Freddie has many like these in here you'll find so useful as well. Good stuff!

A great golf reference for learning to play "trouble" shots.
Since I purchased Total Shotmaking the book has been my constant source of reference and review whenever my game drops a notch. The best part of this book, for me, is the section titled "Couples' Clinic." This section includes 60 excellent tips on shot making. Its almost as if Fred Couples becomes your personal instructor to help you correct bad shots or develop new shots to enhance your game.

Total Shotmaking has helped me lower my handicap because it has expanded my bag of shots to help me recover from difficult spots.

The Tragedy of Afghanistan: A First-Hand Account

Powerful
This is a fine book dealing with the history of Afghanistan. It gives us excellent insight into the problems that currently exists, whether it be tribal, race or religious. Anwar's book will keep the reader on edge from start to finish, this book is somewhat of a self fulfilling prophecy as much of what anwar says near the end of the book has occured in recent afghan history. He details the rise of the marxist party and also how yet again the U.S. government poked its nose in business that didnt concern them and aided outsiders who had their own political agenda. The insight is amazing as are the facts which anwar reveals, this book needs to be reprinted during these days and times so that we can see how the problem developed and also who helped it come about.

The most excellent book of its category.
An excellent book, perhaps the most excellent ever written on the subject. I recommend it strongly to everyone. Although the author has been a Marxist, I do not hold that against him, as many well-meaning fools have remained ones at some stage or other of their lives. This book exposes in very lucid detail the true nature of the various Afghan communist cabals--and indeed, in a larger sense, the true nature of the Afghans overall. It also highlights very well the nature of the Afghans' Pakistani opponents, and in doing so provides a valuable insight into the reality of the ancient, vicious yet petty enemities that govern the relations and conduct of such societies with each other--yet continue to persist strongly even in these "modern" times of ours. It goes without saying that the Afghan situation proved to be the graveyard not only of the fallacies of Soviet communism in toto, but also of many of the West's current naive assumptions, too.

bible on afghanistan,s situation
anwar is the first and perhaps the only one who could clearly see through history and write in 1988 that the real bloodiest civil war will start after russian withdrawl.unless you go through this book you can not grasp todays afghan tragedy .the book has stood the test of history . i hope its new edition will be published.
