Learning with a great soul
This is a truly wonderful book. I will not discuss the content here, although I loved everything I read. What I wish to express, in this review, because I don't think the previous reviewers made it clear, is the amazing transformative power that Kirael has. As you read this book, your mind is in mental contact with Kirael's mind. This contact has an amazingly powerful ability to help you evolve, spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and even biologically. This evolution is priceless, because it is so positive and effective.
As with other books of this nature, this is a book that will transform you just by your holding it. Why? Simply because holding it is a manner of coming into contact with Kirael, and Kirael is an immensely advanced and benevolent entity. Even if you only read the book once, your contact with Kirael will remain for the rest of your life, and this is something that can be counted as a huge blessing.
By the way, there are other books, channelled from advanced entities, that have similar effects. I mention this so that people don't become convinced that Kirael is unique in this respect. For those who are curious and want to find other benevolent spiritual teachers and guides, I would mention in particular the following books: "The explorer race"; "The Hathor material"; "The nature of personal reality"; and "the Pleiadian workbook". They all are outstanding works of immense wisdom, yet they present very different paths to spiritual growth. Enjoy your reading!

Want to find out what is going on?...read this book now!
"Kirael: The Great Shift" is an extraordinary piece of work. It provides the reader with the insight about personal and planetary changes. Simply put, Kirael and Fred Sterling have gifted us with a message that will change everything we feel and believe in...for the better. It is time to heal, read this book!

Valuable insights for questions I have always wanted to ask!
Kirael, "The Great Shift" has provided me valuable insights to life's questions which I have always wanted to ask, but never knew where. We can all relate to the fascination which the new millennium brings, man's eternal search for the beyond. Since Biblical times, it has been written of a great change to come, a time of love, peace, and serenity. Kirael answers questions to both past and present, tying in topics from Jesus to the Extra Terrestials. This book is essential reading for anyone living in the 90's in search of their eternal truths.

"Son": A Psychopath and His Victims
The Crimes of Fred and his mother, Ruth Coe: A true story of obsession, revenge and family tragedy in the all American City.

This is one of the most remarkable true crime books you will ever read. It is many things at once. For months, the story of a mother, a son and a city emmeshed in tragedy made headlines across the nation. This is the story behind the headlines. It is also an extraordinary examination of the mind of a psychopath and of the women -- and men -- who were his victims. And it is a chilling investigation of the consequences of a crime that does not kill -- but which destroys as surely as any knife or gun.

For more than two years, a rapist prowled the night streets of the homey, "All-American" city of Spokane, Washington, terrorizing women, sparking a run on gun stores, and finally causing one newspaper to offer a reward, the calls taken by the distinguished managing editor himself, Gordon Coe. In March of 1981, luck and inspired police work at last produced an arrest, and Spokane shuddered. The man was clean-cut, teetotal, conservative -- and Gordon Coe's son.

The family rallied behind Fred Coe. They had an explanation for everything. Fred's mother, Ruth, gave "Son" detailed alibis for the rapes. But the evidence was overwhelming. As Fred was led away, Ruth Coe was heard to say, "Down, but not out." It was no mere gesture of defiance.

Ruth Coe was bent on revenge, and soon the judge and the prosecuting attorney would feel the full force of her murderous wrath.

For eighteen months, Jack Olsen researched the cases of Fred and Ruth Coe to try to learn not only what happened within that family, but how and why. He intereviewed more than 150 people, and slowly, bit by bit, built up a portrait not only of that extraordinary family, but of the mind of a psychopath. Talking with the rape victims, he probed the devastating effect the violations had had on their lives two weeks afterward, two months afterward, two years afterward. And searching the memories of the women in Fred Coe's life, he unearthed a most horrifying question: What is it like to love and live with a man for years -- and then discover he is a psychopathic criminal?

The answer to that question, to all the questions Olsen asked, and the bizarre conclusion to an ever-more-bizarre series of crimes, make "SON" the most riveting account of villainy and dark obsession since IN COLD BLOOD.

One of Olsen's best
You always know to expect outstanding true crime writing from Jack Olsen, however, this has to be considered one of his best. The story of Fred Coe, his mother, the crimes, and those effected both directly and indirectly by his otrocities is written and researched perfectly. READ THIS book!

"Son"
I read this book and really enjoyed it. It was very well written and very understandable. I am 13 years old, and i still could read it, understand it, and like it! I hope more people will but this book

best surf book
Most surf books are small waves breaking in shallow water, this guy sees beyond horizon.

One of the greats
One of the greats has finally written about his love of surfing and the history of the sport, including its professional beginnings. Thank you, Fred, for baring your soul and sharing your stories. Now we will have them for all time.

A Surfers book.
What a great book. A surfer's book! Fred kept it short, sweet and heartfelt...all a surfer requires. I don't agree 100% with his beliefs but he speaks honestly and with a spirit only a Hawaiian could fully grasp. His political platform gets my vote. His last page gave me goosebumps. I have done many things in life non-surfing related but more than anything else, to say "I am a surfer", says it all!

Twilight of the Great Trains
Published in Hardcover by Kalmbach Publishing Company (1998)
Authors: Fred W. Frailey and Terry Spohn
Amazon base price: $49.95
Used price: $14.85
Average review score:

The best book of its kind
Twilight of the Great Trains gave me a much better understanding of the downfall of the American passenger railroads and the creation of Amtrak. The chapter on Union Pacific was a bit of a disappointment, as it was mostly a chronology of events. But subsequent chapters got inside the heads of railroad executives and the different approaches they took to a common problem. Some couldn't wait to get rid of their passenger trains, while others held onto them as long as they possibly could. Sprinkled throughout are several interesting personal stories.

Missing from the narrative is a detailed discussion of government funding policies which heavily favored air and auto travel while excluding trains entirely. This was a major factor in the loss of passenger rail service in this country, for the trains were essentially trying to compete against government-built highways and airports.

Well written and informative book
If you love trains and/or model trains, then you will really find this book informative and engaging. It chronicles the demise of the passenger train as THE method of long distance transportation to the not often used method of long distance travel it is today.

The Best Book in the World!
Twilight of the Great Trains is the world's best book! It is descriptive and brilliant! Fred W. Frailey is an inspiring and amazing author! I would recomend this to the young and old and to train lovers and non-train lovers!

Chocolate Moose for Dinner

Great Book For All Ages
"A Chocolate Moose for Dinner" is a great book that shows people of all ages, how the English language isn't always literal. Not only is this book funny, but also has great illustrations!

He's the Town's Favorite Sun.
The English language is all [messed] up. Foreigners recognize that immediately, but it takes we Americans much longer to realize that. Of course, with all the goofy rules and exceptions in English, it can be quite fun to speak it. No more is this more apparent than with homonyms (words that sound the same but have different meanings). Kids love homonyms, and used in an imaginative context can help children gain an appreciation for language. With that in mind, A CHOCOLATE MOOSE FOR DINNER is a delightful book. The sayings and the illustrations that accompany those phrases are a joy to read and usually get several laughs from children. A few of the phrases (shoe tree, and the rowing allusions) maybe a bit unfamiliar to modern audiences. Nevertheless, those terms add to the book rather than detract. Children love this book and it is sure to be a winner in alomst any home.

Homonymic Humor
Fred Gwynne wrote his books for the persons who like to hear words in strange context and see strange intrepretations. Elementary children love to have the Gwynne books and hear the adults read these phrases to them with delightful illustrations that don't say what we have expected to see and hear. Obviously chocolate moose should be spelled mousse and thus we see a real moose being served for dinner. Fred in real life was as diverse as his books with his role in Adams Family. As an adult and teacher, I love these books and think about words that are spelled in several ways.

Diet-Step 20/20 reviewed by The Bookwatch January 2002
Dr. Stutman's Diet-Steps: 20 Grams/20 Minutes For Women Only is unique among diet and fitness books with its exclusively emphasis for women of all ages, body-builds, and levels of physical fitness. Featured is a quick, effective, and safe weight-loss plan based on a healthy diet of 20 grams of fat and 20 grams of fiber. Also included is a 20 minute aerobic exercise walking program combined with easy strength-training exercise for complete cardiovascular fitness. Of immense value for any woman wanting to significantly improve her personal health and well-being, Diet-Steps is especially recommended for women with limited free time.

Diet-Step 20 Grams/20 Minutes - Reviewed by Karen Larsen
Dr. Stutman offers a new book on weight loss. The basis of the book - 20 Grams of fat a day, 20 minutes of walking a day - is basic common sense. However, Dr. Stutman writes in an engaging manner, keeping the pages turning as he slips in a lot of useful information.

There are sample menus to stay on track with the proper distribution of fat, protein and carbohydrates. Dr. Stutman goes over the fiber content in various foods, the different types of fat, how veggies are full of all sorts of good stuff and help fight disease...I could go on, but this book is worth reading to find out for yourself.

The other focus in this book is exercise. Dr. Stutman goes over the various types of aerobic exercise, though he spends the most time on his registered Fit-Step Program. Fit-Step is about walking, though the category is rather broader than that since dancing is one type of "Step."

For a common sense approach to weight loss, good health and a plan that can last a lifetime, I recommend DIET-STEP 20/20 FOR WOMEN ONLY!

The Italic Way to Beautiful Handwriting, Cursive and Calligraphic

Does just what it says!
I have always been interested in beauty and the arts, so calligraphy has always been fascinating to me. And when I decided it was time to do something about my messy handwriting, this book was a tremendouse help.

I first bought this book several years ago, but have since lost, misplaced it or given it away. As my handwriting has deteriorated from computer use and lack of practice, I felt it was time to get back to calligraphy. Imagine my frustration when I couldn't find the book! Now that I have it again, my handwriting continues to improve.

This book is very effective and does just what it says. It has clear, effective, and easy-to-follow instructions and excellent practice sheet templates. I've found that tracing the letters is the best way to learn how they should be formed, and this book makes it easy. The practice sheets are normal (8.5x11) size, so you don't have to mess with resizing on a computer or copier.

The results are pleasing and beautiful. And my everyday handwriting is more legible and pleasant to read, without looking like it was written by a high school cheerleader or an obsessive-compulsive neatnik (No offense to high school cheerleaders or obsessive-compulsive neatniks, it's just that that's not the way a middle-aged man is expected to write!)

The only negatives about this book are: (1)that it seems too short (it would be nice to have more information), and (2) that it teaches only one style of calligraphy. But, once you've learned everything in this book, you'll have a good basis for learning more calligraphy.

I sincerely wish that it was back in print, so that I could safely recommend it to anyone hoping to improve their handwriting or learn calligraphy. But, if you happen to find it, BUY IT QUICKLY! You won't regret it. (And if you do, let me know, I might take it off your hands!)

What a great find
I bought this book when I was 10yrs old. I lost it for many years and have only just found it again (I'm now 35). It has brought back many memories and I intend to start writing again. It was a great book then and it still is now. It's a pity it is out of print now. I feel priviledged to own it.

The Best Book I've Ever Read About Italic Writing
This book is the best book I've ever read on Italic writing. The lessons are structured in a logical manner. They're easy to do, and I was amazed by the end results.

Good demonstration of strategies
This may not be what you expect. It is actually a book of annotated games. The annotations are appropriate to early intermediate players -- not full of deep variations, but also not just some dumb comment on every move (which is especially annoying in the opening). It's more like every 3rd or 4th move. This is perfect for describing strategies concisely.

The strategies are practical, not deep. The games were carefully selected to illuminate basic principles. These are not "brilliancies" with sudden, crushing defeats based on deeply analyzed tactics. These show one player making stronger moves than his opponent -- stronger, but still understandable. I think the author has done a good job with his selection.

Each section does have about 2 pages of text describing the principles, but it's mainly a book to be used with a chess board. Play the moves and read the author's comments. Sometimes he points out the tactical threats (which are obvious to an advanced player) and that's where a board is useful.

I would recommend this book instead of Chernev's "Logical Chess Move by Move", unless you are truly a beginner (adult) hoping to get a feel for the drama in the struggles on the chessboard. (Chernev's book has far more diagrams per game too.) It is as instructive as Bronstein's highly praised annotations of the Zurich International, but at a much lower level.

USCF 1400-1700 rating.

4 stars as an inexpensive and comprehensibly annotated collection of elucidating games. But if you're on a budget, skip this book and buy one of Reinfeld's puzzle books.

Now reprinted in algebraic
This is indeed a clear, pithy middlegame book. But the one thing I have to add is that the Dover edition is a reprint and has been redone in *algebraic* notation.

Astonishing!
One of the best intermediate level books you will ever see. It is truly astonishing how lucid and poignant this book on chess strategy. If you like great chess writing (e.g. Silman, Purdy, Marovic, Romanovsky, etc.) you must have this book. It is perhaps the most important summary of chess strategy that I have (and I have all of them!)
