Excellent read for fans of all ages
I really enjoyed reading this. Fred Lieb does a remarkable job covering the major events that occured in baseball during his career in baseball as a writer(1911-1975). It begins with him as a young sports writer covering the 1911-1912 World Series witnessing players like Christy Mathewson, Homerun Baker and Fred Snodgrass. He then dedicates individual chapters talking about his relationship with Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Lou Gherig, Pete Alexander and Christy Mathewson and his opinion on their place in baseball history. He talks about the effect the 1919 World Series fix had on baseball and how Landis was the games savior as he calls him. He also has chapters on some of his favorite mangers that he covered including Connie Mack, Casey Stengel and Joe McCarthy. He concludes this excellent book by comparing and contrasting how the game has changed since his youth(1890s to early 1900s) to today(mid 1970s at time of writing) then picking his all-time teams in 25 year spans from 1876-1975. Any baseball fan with an interest in the games history should definately pick this book up.

Fred Lieb is A True Hall of Famer
Fred Lieb knew the players he talks about personally. Anything written by Fred Lieb about baseball is coming from a true authority on the subject. Baseball has a history unlike any other sport. No other sport can touch it, and in reading about it from Fred Lieb you are getting it from a true master. Do yourself a favor. Buy the book.

Fred Lieb was telling what he saw and felt.
Because Fred Lieb saw so many old time players and told about them in such an interesting way. I also thould he was very fair in his comparing of the players abilities.

The "Bible" of the Washington Cascades
Whether you are a climber, a hiker, a car traveler, or just an armchair explorer, the Beckey guides are the indispensible resources for your mountain experience. The three volumes are filled with information about the natural and human history of the Washington Cascades, as well as complete route and access data for every significant summit. The photos alone are reason enough to own these books. If you are interested in really "knowing" the Washington Cascades, you MUST have them in your library. Highest possible recommendation.

A Bible for traveling in the Alpine regions of the Cascades
The series of books by Beckey on climbing and high routes in the cascades gives the most comprehensive and complete presentation of cascades. Each peak is described with great detail and the photos and pictures are great. This is truly a great guide!

An indispensabe reference book for Northwest Climbers.
I have used this Guidebook so many times in the past 12 years that I've had to purchase it three times. The definitive section on the Picket Range alone is worth the price of the book.

For those who want to experience the North Cascades as they were in the 30's and 40's, reading the "Trails and Alpine Hiking Approaches" section will steer you in the right direction. This book is rife with golden kernels of information found nowhere else. Any serious climber should have all three of the Cascade Alpine Guide books.

A moving "symphony of struggle"
"Christ in Concrete," by Pietro di Donato, is a superb novel of the Italian-American experience. The Signet Classic edition contains a preface by Studs Terkel and a very informative introduction by Fred L. Gardaphe. Terkel notes that the book was first published in 1939, and compares it to John Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath."

"Christ" tells the story of an urban, working-class Italian-American family in the early part of the 20th century. Much of the book is focused on Paul, a young man who finds work as a bricklayer.

di Donato writes with a vivid style; he attains a muscular poetry of blood and concrete as he describes the workers' "symphony of struggle." He brings to life both the specifics of Italian-American life as well as the larger multicultural world in which Paul's family lives. The book deals with Italian-American folk beliefs, tenement living, bilingualism, and a young man's sexual awakening. di Donato also writes on the theme of the common person's struggle against uncaring officialdom. He also explores the question of faith in the face of suffering.

There are many vivid scenes and characters in this novel. One account of an Italian-American feast is particularly memorable. There are also some really graphic, horrifying descriptions of workplace death and injury. I believe that this powerful novel belongs on the shelf with all those great books that sympathetically look at the oppressed and the overworked in the United States. And for another author who has written eloquently on the Italian-American experience, I recommend the fiction of John Fante.

Wonderfully heartrending
This tale of the Italian-American experience told through the voice of a young man whose father is killed in a bizarre construction accident is overwhelming.

It is perhaps the most overlooked American classic.

the elusive dream
One of the greatest of great Italian American novels addressing the immigrant participation in the bricks and mortar of building America and those who fell short of achieving the dream.

Excellent Reference Material
I've been a fan of the 1953 version of a the Carol for as long as I remember. It was family tradition every Christmas eve to watch it. I've looked at as many possible versions and have yet to find it's match. This book is an amazing resource of all the various interpretations of the Dicken's classic has gone through from early lantern projected pictures, through the silent era, talking films, television, and animated specials. The early version were fascinating and I found it a special bonus that the author made note of various television shows which featured a special Christmas episode inspired by A Christmas Carol. Who could ever forget the "Six Million Dollar Man" Christmas special using the ideas from the novel. This brought back a lot of great television special memories. I was even able to track down two hard to find T.V. animated specials shown in the early 1970's but not seen since. (I found them on Amazon). All in all a great read, especially for fans. I did not agree with all of the criticisms, and the text is a rather dry read, maybe a little too academic. But still great stuff!!

A Wonderful Treat
Fred Guida has presented an incredibly well researched and beautifully written book that blends the literary history of this story along with the history of its various screen presentations. Thank you for this unique presentation.

A Treat for "Carol" Lovers
Everyone has a favorite film or television version of Dickens beloved "A Christmas Carol." But few of us have any idea how very many adaptations there have been. Mr. Guida's wonderful book examines first the written "Carol," then goes on to detail some of the hundreds of adaptations and variations, from the early stage versions and magic lantern slides to modern made-for-television Carols. Mr. Guida discusses the major Carols with wit and humor as well as rare discernment: his love for his subject is evident. Minor Carols and variations are also covered, albeit more briefly. If you cannot find your favorite version in the text, you are sure to find it in the superb and very thorough filmography. The filmography is worth browsing in and of itself; did you know that there have been Western, country-western, rock-and-roll, and even science-fiction variations on "A Christmas Carol"? Or that actors as disparate as Cicely Tyson, Basil Rathbone, and Mr. Magoo have played Scrooge? If you love "A Christmas Carol" or simply dote on film trivia, I promise you will enjoy this book.

Dancing Between the Lines
A beautiful work of sensitivity and insight from a man who truly understands not only his soul, but the spirit of the Native Americans he has come to grow with. An amazing Jungian analyst and talented writer, this book opened my eyes to a world I could not see before.

One of my top 10 favorites
This is an incredibly insightful book by Gustafson, who shares his own story combined with the teachings of NA people and Jungian psychology. Definitely a "must have" book for therapists working among NA populations.

This is an excellent book, a must for all Jungians!
This book is well written and comes from the many seasons of the author life and work. Dr.Gustafson draws from his many years as a Jungian Anayst and his personal experience with his native american friends. There are some wonderful stories here from the authors life and some powerful insights that will be helpful to those seeking a deeper understanding of their soul.

what an adventure
I HAD HEARD THE NAME FRED BIRCHMORE FROM MY FATHER AND AUNTS IN ATHENS, GA WHEN I WAS A CHILD. I RECENTLY FOUND A FIRST RUN SIGNED COPY IN OUR OLD FAMILY HOME. WHAT A WONDERFUL ADVENTURE WITH MANY REFERENCES TO HIS HOMETOWN, ATHENS,GA AND HIS BELOVED UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA. IT WAS VERY INTERRESTING TO RELIVE THE WORLD POLITICS AT THAT TIME. THIS IS A MUST READ FOR EVERY CYCLIST. THERE WAS A RECENT FRED BIRCHMORE SIGHTING AT THE WOLF CAMERA STORE AND THE YMCA IN ATHENS.HE AND HIS WIFE CONTINUE TO WALK AND SWIM ALMOST EVERY DAY.

Fond Memories
This book first caught my attention in a public library some 40+ years ago, and I have never forgotten it. Birchmore's accounts of exhaustion, danger, exhilaration, and discovery are themselves thrilling, a testament to physical and emotional stamina. For armchair traveler and potential world explorer alike, this is an account to treasure.

Going,going, and still going...
I am ordering the book today. I just wanted you to know that Fred is 89, still bicycling, and living in Athens, Georgia. Look him up on the net.

Detailed but flawed
I have read the book in detail, since this was the primary textbook we had for our class. It is quite astounding how so many things have been compiled into a single book -- not only in scope but also in terms of the number of researches put together. But it can be noted that the authors are clearly biased towards "modern finance" and defend clearly their own views. Another flaw is that there are ambiguities in some parts. You would not really know what they want to say. With respect to mathematics, the level demanded is alright. In fact, it could probably be made better with more math. Ideas could become clearer that way.

beautiful!
Since I have a MA in Econ, I was looking for a book that builds the bridge from economics to finance. copeland and weston have done an excellent job,and I am lucky to have struck gold after months of frustrations with "popular" texts like brealey myers. Copeland and Weston is meant for advanced undergrad and grad students. It presents the material in a serious, mathematical fashion, unlike Stephen Leroy's Financial Economics (another excellent text, but aimed for Phd students),so that there is a feeling of actually learning something at the end of the chapter. Most importantly it doesent trivialize issues like B/M do. I would definitely recommend the book to those interested in learning finance seriously.especially to those with a masters background.

Finance
Copeland and Weston did an extraordinary work writing Financial Theory and Corporate Policy. This book is an excellent academic material for either MBA or Ph.D students with a concentration in finance. However, we need an update edition because the last one (1988) does not incorporate the last empirical developments. I hope Copeland and Weston can produce a new update edition. Everybody that loves finance will be very grateful.

Well done, Professor Manis
I just met and spoke to Professor Manis today at the Southern Festival of Books in Nashville. His presentation of the work made me run out and buy it. Though I have not yet finished it, I am already very impressed.

Winner of the 2000 Lillian Smith Book Award
The story of Fred Shuttlesworth is a powerful, dramatic story that everyone interested in the black freedom movement should read. Manis' compelling portrayal captures the spirit and spirituality of a great unsung hero. The book has been honored by the Lillian Smith Book Award, the South's oldest literary prize, and deserves a wide reading.

A powerful story of courage
A compelling portrait of a real unsung hero. Emerge Magazine says it well: "The greatest battles of the civil rights movement come alive in this biography of the man Martin Luther King Jr. called "one of the nation's most courage freedom fighters." Manis is to be congratulated for bringing us this powerful story.
