Vintage -- Fred Craddock -- Early but never late!
Ones who read these stories and sermons by Dr Craddock may recognize some of his traits of personality in his styles of preaching. None-the-less, they are all, 'Vintage Fred Craddock.' As Barbara Brown Taylor writes, no one can possibly copy the style or practices of Fred Craddock's preaching. When he has finished telling the story, he drops his head, looks over his glasses with a stony look on his face waiting for the people's reaction...almost like he has just thought it up at the moment!

Two of his best vintage from earlier years that I remember are both the shortes and the longest. When he speaks about "How long does Easter last?" he prods around in our thoughts to see if there is still Hope? From that one to the longest "Living on the Edge," I could not stop reading and laughting!

Lasting from past to future, they are vintage Craddock. Hooray!

Vintage, Fred Craddock - Imagination never short!
Those who read these stories and sermons by Dr. Craddock may recognize his personality traits found in styles of his preaching. None-the-less, they are all - 'Vintage' Fred Craddock. As Barbara Brown Taylor writes in her introduction, no one can possibly emulate Fred Craddock's preaching. When he has finished telling a story in his sermons, he lowers his head, looks out over the top of his glasses with a stoney, puzzled look on his face, waiting for people's reaction. With an innocent look of interest he seems to be the model, introverted, intuitive, thinker! He gives an impression of one who just thought-it-up at the moment.

Two of his best vintage sermons are both shortest and longest. When he speaks about "How long does Easter last?" he seems able to walk around in our thoughts to see if there is any Hope. His quote about Hope, as "built on the nature of God, Who calls into being what does not yet exist," fits with any good sermon based on Hope!

From the shortest one to the longest, "Living on the Edge," I could not stop reading and laughting! From the earlier shortest to future longest, they are Imaginative, 'Vintage' Craddock. Hooray!

Chess in a Nutshell: An Appropriate Title
This was the first book about chess I ever bought. By studying it, I taught myself how to play chess when I was still a child. It contains a complete list of the rules, and explains them so that anyone who reads English can understand them.

If you just want to learn how to play Chess, and don't have anyone to teach you, this is the only book you need.

My first book on Chess
This book was the first book I ever read on Chess and it hooked me on the game. Although other books have more detail or are more comprehensive, this book gives the basic concepts of the game. It is quite readable. It is suitable for introducing a novice to basic strategies before they are committed to learning serious Chess. I still use concepts I learned from this book 30 years ago to teach kids chess today.

Fosse Fan
I'm a regular Bob Fosse Fan. I believe everything he touches turns to gold, so this definetly is golden. The music pieces are one of a kind..."Nowadays", "Foxy Roxy", ..."All That Jazz". If you are looking for A vocal selection to sing for any reason, this has a WIDE variety of songs for Men And Women. It'll "Razzle Dazzle" YOU . . .

The Book Of One Of Broadway's Best
Kander and Ebb, who wrote the lyrics and music to this as well as Cabaret, Steel Pier and many others, are two of the most talented in the profession. Chicago is my second favorite muscial, losing out to Kander and Ebb's dramatic work Cabaret. Chicago is the darkest, funniest musical. The lyrics are cynical and the music is catchy. Particularly good is the song sung by the character Mary Sunshine called "A Little Bit Of Good" which is the only optimistic song in the score and is very much so, being so sacchrine that it's funny. Another favorite of mine is "Mr. Cellophane," which, when sung right, can be hilarious and, when cohreographed correctly, is even moreso. The score is perfect in my mind. "And that's good, isn't it great, isn't it fun..." it sure is.

Difficult to play, but fun to have!
You don't need to play the piano to enjoy this book. With 8 pages of picture, it's pretty enjoyable. Plus it has the lyrics, and the different stage ending for "cell Block Tango".

AMAZING!!! THE BEST YET!!!
I have the Broadway Vocal Selections, and that was just fabulous, but this one is by far my favorite. Kander and Ebb (Cabaret) are the kings of Broadway. And this one has my favorite Chicago song, "Cell Block Tango" which i loved on stage and loved even more on screen. These songs are the best, and I hope broadway shows get better and better, because in my opinion, these two gentlemen have set the bar...and it is high!!

A Wonderful Book For Your Library
I personally knew Fred Mallison all my life and have a personally signed copy of this book. Fred died a while back so there will be no more signed copies from him. The only thing Fred did not like was the title, as he had a different one, but the publisher made him use this one. A fair amount of the information in the book came from the memoirs of my GG Grandfather, William Henry von Eberstein. The book is well written and Fred used many good sources, including books, memoirs, etc. Many little known facts of the War on the Outer Banks are included which make for very interesting reading. Fred also included a number of very good pictures in the book. I have just completed transcribing William H. von Eberstein's memoirs (the War Years)and hope to have them published soon as they give a wonderful accounting of his service to the Confederacy. I would recommend this book as a must for all personal War for Southern Independence libraries.

An excellent book
This is an excellent book that tells a little known side of the Civil War.

California "Tar Heel" Longs for N. C. Home
If this book of short stories does not make a former Tar Heel homesick, then I have not a clue as to what would... it made me want to go home immediately. The stories are funny, sad, and range in levels from wonderful to great. A librarian friend gave me this book and it is one of the best gifts I have ever received. I plan to purchase several to give as gifts. My home is now in California, but my heart will always be down home in North Carolina.

Great for giving.......just TRY hanging on to your own copy!
I'm ordering what must be my fourth or fifth copy of this terrific little book. It's a comforting, warm, fuzzy, and sometimes funny set of recollections sure to regenerate the reader's own rememberances of home. I try to keep a copy beside the bed in my guest room, but alas, my guests are always so taken with what they've read before turning out the light that I always have to say "Just take my copy along with you. I'll get another." I've also given it to friends in the process of fighting terrible illnesses. They find peace in the authors' accounts, conjuring up their own memories of home.

Yet another Griffiths' jewel!
See review under Garlic, Garlic, Garlic. This one features wonderful one-pot dishes that are the equal to those in their other books. Very fine, indeed!

Cooking Under Cover
They sure mean it when they call them one pot wonders. Who would have thought that soups and stews could be so sophisticated. I am someone who often makes various chili dishes, crockpot meals and casseroles because I like to save time, but I needed a new bag of tricks. I like how it is organized by main ingredient which helps when I have meat or vegetables that I don't know what to do with. They also have some great desserts and for novices like me, some help with the basics. This should definitely be a staple in the kitchen

Exposes the anti-Georgist origins of neo-classical economics
In the late 19th century, economist and social philosopher Henry George achieved international fame by calling for the abolition of all taxation save that upon land values -- a tax reform that would reconcile the conflict between economic liberty and social justice. So persuasive were George's arguments that landed elites, desperate to protect their vested interests in unearned wealth, set out to undermine George's immense popularity.

In "The Corruption of Economics," the precise manner in which Henry George was neutralized is uncovered by professor Mason Gaffney. That manner -- which later became known as neo-classical economics -- was to corrupt economic science. How? By blurring the traditional distinction between capital and land (and hence between earned and unearned income), by glossing this blurred distinction with jargon and abstract models, and by recasting economics generally to make free-riding by landowners seem just and moral.

Unable or unwilling to address Gaffney's arguments head-on, some economists are fond of dismissing this book out of hand as nothing more than a "conspiracy theory." In reality, it's a scholarly analysis of the anti-Georgist origins of the neo-classical school of economics, and how this school made an artform out of justifying landed privilege. Every single one of its claims in that regard are supported by credible references.

"The Corruption of Economics" is a must-read for anyone who suspects there is something inherently flawed with "mainstream" economic theory -- particularly when it comes to reconciling the seeming conflict between economic liberty and social justice -- but is unsure as to what that flaw is.

The Corruption of Economics
Anyone who has ever spent a half a day in a university getting lectured on economics should read this book. To academics it is a must. To ordinary folks it reads like a crimi. Best insight book on the market as why economics is such a muddled science and why lawyers, historians, politicians and journalists have no clue about todays whereabouts. Or did you ever wonder why you work like a slave and get stripped down to nearly nothing by the state and its "social" agencies. Ever wondered why we face so much sprawl, poverty, blight? This book explains neatly what happened to the once grand sience of political economy and the real effects on todays world.

Vindication for Wetherills
I appreciated this book, not just for the fantastic illustrations and stories, but for improving the reputation of the Wetherills, long considered no-good cowboy pot hunters. A great companion to this books is In Search of the Old Ones by David Roberts, in which Fred Blackburn features largely as a revolutionary who shapes Roberts' thinking about the mess each generation of southwestern archeologists passes on to the next.

Detective story on finding "lost" archaeological collection
Undoubtedly the popular book of the year in Southwest archaeology, "Cowboys and Cave Dwellers" tells how a group of talented and dedicated "amateurs" found the missing links between nearly forgotten collections of artifacts stored in museum basements and their original sites in Utah's spectacular Grand Gulch. In the process they unearthed valuable information about the people called Basketmakers, the first farmers of the Colorado Plateau. The first explorers and untrained archaeologists who dug sites in Grand Gulch removed thousands of artifacts, often taking little care to record their locations. By carefully matching old photographs, diaries, newspaper articles and the signatures those adventurers carved on the canyon walls, the authors of this book, the members of the Wetherill-Grand Gulch Research Project, were able to locate many of the caves and cliff dwelling where the treasures were originally found. They solved one of the most puzzling mysteries of Southeastern Utah archaeology: the location of long lost Cave 7, where Mesa Verde discoverer Richard Whetherill dug up dozens of skeletons that seemed to show evidence of a massacre. A good story with extensive historial and archaeological background and beautifully illustrated, this book is essential for anyone interested in Southwest archaeology. A good companion piece is William Ferguson's "The Anasazi of Mesa Verde and the Four Corners Region," which gives a broader view of the entire Mesa Verde-San Juan region.
