French Phonetics: A Guide to Correct Pronunciation of French
Published in Paperback by University Press of America (01 December, 1997)
Author: Trudie Maria Booth
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

Great phonetics book - should be in every library.
This book on French phonetics is the best publication on this subject that I have ever encountered. It is perfect for beginning students as a guide to correct pronunciation of French as well as a valuable reference guide to teachers of French . This book is a must for the library of any serious student of the French language. The organization of the book lends itself especially well to self instruction and for purposes of teaching. An additional plus for the beginning student in French is that all instructions are in English which insures no misunderstanding of the essential points of French phonetics. The book, being a recent publication, also seems to reflect the most current trend in pronunciation of the French language and each chapter is loaded with practical examples of pronunciation taken from modern everyday French and not the usual borrowing of vocabulary from already published books. In fact the vocabulary content in the book alone is helpful for the interested student. At it's price it is a real bargain. Let's hope the author plans to come out with a hard copy version and maybe even a tape or CD on phonetics as well. END

Three Cheers
Three cheers for the newest book by beloved early child educator, Ellen Booth Church! The Great Big Book of Classroom Songs, Rhymes and Cheers is a delightful collection that weaves traditional old favorites with brand new material. It offers well organized ways to incorporate fun into language experiences for children. Whether you are teaching the alphabet or using music for cleanup routines, Ms. Church offers a creative approach. Each rhyme or song is accompanied with several activities to extend the learning experience. The book is divided into chapters dealing with a variety of topics from circle time to science. One especially unique section uses multicultural rhymes that helps young children explore other cultures. The chapter "Alphabet Rhymes" is comprised of original rhymes by Ms. Church that are quite fun. What child would forget the letter "p" after eating and chanting a "pile of purple pancakes"? Whether you are a beginner in the field of early childhood education , or an old veteran, this book will be a valuable instrument to bring song into the hearts of children.

Happy Texan
In perusing the library for books on Texas gardening, I came across this title. I almost didn't include it in my stash. Upon flipping through the pages, there weren't any "purdy" pictures. Boy am I glad I brought it home! I started putting a sticky note on the pages I wanted to photocopy and ended up putting one on every other page--that's a lot of sticky notes! So I had to buy it! This book is not only an up to date resource list for Texas by region or city, but has an information header in each category. This is invaluable. Sounds like a "resource" book would be pretty dry--but it's not. It's fun and well written and will go with me in my car always here in San Antonio and thru out Texas. My only regret is that it is a special order with 4-6 week delivery. Don't know why since it was published in 1999.

Healing With Color: The Experience of Aura-Soma

A stunning journey into the world of colour...
In the introduction to her book, Philippa Merivale invites you to join her on a voyage of discovery through "bizarre and gruelling events" to "astonishing and colourful pastures", "a whole new world of Colour and Light". If that opening does not whet your appetite................! This book is a study of the system of Colour Therapy through Aura Soma but not by any measure can it be described as a text book. It is a clear and gentle introduction to the subject, peppered with anecdotes and fascinating case histories, and illustrated with brilliantly coloured photographs and line drawings. Philippa Merivale says: "Colour opens doors to hidden rooms within ourselves" Strange, but true? Buy this book and find out for yourself.

Cross the Golden river - Impressions
What a great find for parents and kids alike! It's difficult to find a few books or stories that elementary school kids like to read, let alone an entire collection of short stories. No more late night searches for stories to complete reading homework assignments. This collection of stories is just right for these readers because the stories are interesting enough to keep their attention (and the parents' as well), and the illustrations are fantastic. The stories cover a wide range of writing styles, cultures, and many are humorous. I highly recommend it.

In The Sporting Tradition: The Art of Herb Booth
If you are into the out of doors and enjoy hunting and fishing then this is a book for you. The art of Herb Booth featured in the edition is outstanding. Not only do you get a fine insight into this artist but are shown the excellent examples of his work as well. The book is filled with oversized high quality color plates showing almost fifty of his pieces. Although wonderful in itself you also get almost 100 black and white line drawings that support the main featured art. These range from fish to birds to hunting dogs. You will also find many of the etchings that Mr. Booth is so famous for. This publication has quickly become a valued addition to my library. I could not be more please with it's quality and content.

Indexing the Manual of Good Practice
Published in Hardcover by K G Saur (July, 2001)
Authors: Pat F. Booth and KG Saur
Amazon base price: $99.00
Average review score:

Indexing: The Manual of Good Practice
This book covers a lot of ground, and Pat Booth's eloquent writing style makes it easy to spend countless hours with it. Whether you read the book sequentially (cover-to-cover) or open it to random pages, Booth never fails to make it worth your while. Even so, I highly recommend reading Chapter One, which dispels myths about indexes and indexing, first.

Indexing: The Manual of Good Practice is extremely well organized. Its twelve chapters include:

1.Indexes - Purpose and Uses; 2.Indexers; 3.What (and Whether) to Index; 4.Forming the Index Entries; 5.Editing and Presenting the Index; 6.Serial Publications; 7.Images and Sound (Audio) Recordings; 8.Subject Specialisms; 9.Literature for Children; 10.Managing the Work; 11.Technology; 12.Professional Organizations and Interest Groups

Overall, I agree with Mary Piggott (President of the Society of Indexers, 1995-1997), who wrote the Foreword for this book. She said, "Indexing: The Manual of Good Practice is at once a revelation for the potential or beginner indexer and a source of reference and revision - also of enlightenment - for the experienced practitioner."

Happy indexing! .... Lori

Introduction to Human-Computer Interaction

An excellent overview of the field
The comments on the outside of the book with all of the quotes praising the work were well-justified. Although almost ten years old the book still goes straight to the heart of the key issues in the field of human-computer interaction.
