Baseball Rules in Plain English

Fantastic
I have the Official Baseball Rules (OBR) book and also use some online resources when trying to determine if my umpiring calls were correct (and what they should be in the future!). However, none of the other resources lay things out as clearly as this book does.

The reader is taken through a logical sequence of coverage that a typical umpire will encounter. It also is useful for coaches, players and spectators, but I find it most useful for umpiring and making calls on rules.

Each section lists the appropriate section of the OBR, so it is good to have OBR at your side as well. The reading is easy, well laid out and printed nicely.

This book was certainly worth the price.

Enjoyable and very well crafted
Charleen Forrest (nee McNinn) is , in good Carol Shields fashion, mostly an observer in her own life. Still in love with her absent, long divorced ex-husband, she alternates bouts of scathing self criticism with ones of gentle dithering. Three days involving enormous amounts of travel, excitement and revelation somehow leave Charleen with just a minor adjustment in her modus operandi. Readers of Ms. Sheilds "Small Ceremonies" will be interested to find Charleen is sister to that novel's biographer heroine, Judith (who makes an appearance here with her husband, Martin, and children as well). Showing the reader what can and cannot be revealed through words as Charleen concentrates most of her energies on correspondence with a mysterious botanist, and showing as well her curious gift for rendering the intangible into a three dimensional state ("Yes." I agree, forcing my voice into short plumes of enthusiasm, "Really good. So tender.") Carol Shields gives this small book the weight of her full talents

An insightful read of Ohio's women
My mother bought this book and loaned it to me to read. If I had a daughter, I would give it to her to read. These women are the unsung heroes of time and history. From frontier days to modern civilization, women have always been the backbone of any social change. Women have fought for equal pay, equal rights and better working conditions. Women have fought for the right to vote. They fight to better society. They fight to keep the family farms. They raised children and worked in factories to keep food on the table. They may have been subjected to men and laws ~~ but they have always fought to have a better life.

This book is very inspiring. Buckeye women are strong and intelligent women who didn't let prejudice stop them from achieving their goals. They fought for what they believed in. And some of the Buckeye women have moved onto the national platform ~~ bringing Ohio into the forefront of history. It's a fascinating read ~~ very insightful and for those who don't care for long descriptives, this book is brief and straight to the point. I didn't feel like they've left anything out ~~ in fact, this book has piqued my interest in Ohioans and read more on Ohio history. It's a fascinating look into time. It also makes me very thankful that my foremothers fought to give me better opportunities in life ~~ it's a book that everyone should read.

Build a Better Trade Show Image
As a 20 year veteran to the meetings and trade show industry I found this book to be helpful in all aspects of exhibit/trade shows. If you are a novice who is just starting out to the person who needs some help getting new ideas for their annual trade show with an exhibit that takes up half the show floor. Maryls the author is very informative, her information in the book is easy to read, comprehend and most important IMPLEMENT. You will see results. She also covered a wide variety of topics and gives statics and examples so you can truly learn how to make your trade show dollars count. I have several books on trade shows and marketing but because of the easy layout I find myself picking up this one the most. This is a great bargin for the amount of USEFUL information you will receive.

Thanks Maryls!

Building an energy efficient home? YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK.
Back in 1983 Don Booth's company, Community Builders was one of the premier developers of energy efficient homes in New England. This privately published book was probably written to help prospective customer's understand the technology and boost sales. No matter what his reason, Don's book became a classic of the genre. Calling upon his experience, he goes step-by-step through the theory and practice of building super insulated and passive solar/geothermal homes. The explanations are clear, the examples are informative and it provides just the right amount of technical detail. If you are planning to build a new home, read this book first. The principles you learn here will save you thousands of heating and cooling dollars. It has already saved me from a very expensive mistake.

Unlike most books on this topic, you can actually read this book without stunning your brain. Instead of bulking up the book with endless pages of sun elevation charts or conversion tables, Don includes twenty 'reviews' of solar/geothermal homes by their owners, designers and builders. These vary from the comic to the insane as the early pioneers struggle to build their dream homes. Some of these stories would make good movies. My personal favorite is the lady who lives in a tent on the site while her home is built. We watch with dismay as construction delays move completion deep into the cold New England winter. Finally, she moves gleefully into the shell while waiting for the windows, only to have her children complain that the tent was warmer. Who says we can't learn from the mistakes of others.

Great Read
I thoroughly enjoyed this book about Catherine Booth. I had known she was a vital part of the team, but I didn't realize the extent of her influence on her husband. This is a book I'm keeping in my library. It's well worth the space

Cherry (The Works of Booth Tarkington)
Published in Library Binding by Classic Books (01 March, 1919)
Author: Booth Tarkington
Amazon base price: $88.00
Used price: $5.29
Average review score:

Outstanding early Tarkington work
This story takes place in 1762 and is about two college-aged men vying for the affections of a young woman. One of the men, Mr. Sudgeberry, the narrator, has a gift for gab. He is loquacious, priggish, self-righteous, and pedantic. His competitor, a happy-go-lucky and slightly dissipated man named William Fentriss. The title of the book comes about because the girl in question, Sylvia, wears cherry-colored ribbons in her hair. The narrator manages to become the cynosure of Sylvia's affections until William concocts a scheme to win her good graces. Mr. Sudgeberry discovers this and exposes him, however Sudgeberry's expsure has unintended results.

One of Tarkington's earlier works, I was a bit worried about its clarity. However, it was easy to read and understand. However, one's vocabulary must be able to match Sudgeberry's abilities. There were a ton of "tough" words in this book. I loved the simplicity of the story though and it worked well for me. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Excellent presentation and accompanying text.
I have seen this book at the publisher's and it is outstanding. The photographs are exceptional and the descriptions well composed and pertinent. You have, however, left out the name of the CO-AUTHOR, Mary Miley Theobald. I hope you will correct this as both professionals worked long and hard to assemble the edition.
