Vernon Booth: a classic in scientific writing
This book is by one of the first authors to recognise that communication skills are important in science, and that they are a craft that has rules and principles that any student can learn relatively easily. It deserves to be treated as a classic, and should be compulsory reading for any student of the life sciences.

I can recall reading it with much interest during my PhD in the 1980's, when it was about the only work available in this field, and various biochemical societies in the UK made it available to students. Much of the advice on straightforward communication style is still extremely valid today. In the later 80's and 90's, the field of writing skills took off, and now most University bookshops have several shelves of books on writing skills and how to write a thesis. Booth's book is short, direct, and the advice is very practical. Read it!

Costa Rica: Quest for Democracy
Published in Paperback by Westview Press (October, 1999)
Author: John A. Booth
Amazon base price: $33.00
Used price: $14.50
Average review score:

Comprehensive overview of Costa Rican democratic government
Placing Costa Rica in the Central American context, Booth evaluates common myths about Costa Rican democracy. He finds the glass half full and half empty: Costa Rica's demanding citizens and a responsive government interact vibrantly, yet 1980s-90s financial crises permitted neoliberal foreign lenders to somewhat erode democracy and undermine redistributive programs that once supported it. Citizens' beliefs and demands sustain democracy, but frustration with hard times and politicians eroded election turnout in 1998. Not a travel guide, the book should interest students, scholars, policy makers, travellers seeking depth of information. Beginning with theories about the nature of democracy and how it develops, Booth traces the growth of Costa Rican politics from militarism and elite rule in the late 19th c. through the development of full democracy since 1949. Chapters focus on how the present constitution and institutions work, social structure and civil society. There are also chapters political participation and culture, political economy under external neoliberal pressures, and foreign policy. Tables and an appendix provide abundant data on elections, politics, economy, and society through 1998.

This man is a national treasure
Apart from having read this great, informative work, I had this man in an Integrated Liberal Studies class at the UW-Madison, where he teaches. I have never experienced the level of communication, passion or knowledge that Booth Fowler can exude.

An Essay on Shakespeare's Sonnets.
Published in Paperback by Yale Univ Pr (January, 1969)
Author: Stephen. Booth
Amazon base price: $3.45
Used price: $49.95
Average review score:

Booth's book is indispensible for understanding the sonnets.
Booth's 1969 "Essay on Shakespeare's Sonnets" is an important and highly useful precursor to his 1977 edition of the sonnets. In it, he examines the various kinds of organization at work in the sonnets: not merely the obvious formal pattern imposed by the rhyme scheme, but additionally the syntactic pattern, patterns of imagery, phonetic structures, and others. In so doing he reveals an inner drama taking place on Shakespeare's sonnets, patterns either consonant with one another or dissonant, the whole working together, moment by moment, to give the reader an experience analogous to what the sonnet itself describes -- conflict, comfort, confusion, and so on.

It is unfortunate that this highly useful book is out of print, for its approach is not only an insightful exploration of the poems it describes, it is an approach one can use with other poets' sonnets, and, indeed, with other forms than the sonnet. One can only hope that Yale UP will resurrect Booth's "Essay" so that teachers and students alike can benefit from its dynamic methods. Meanwhile, anyone able to dig up a used copy will have found a true treasure.

Exploring the Solar System
Outstanding pictures from decades of space research are the main feature of this book. The lively text avoids numbers and math, sometimes using factoids rather than numerical values. The illustrations include actual pictures and computer enhanced or artist conceptions of various space missions. The text is dotted with interesting historical tidbits about those missions and the people involved. But the real reason to get this book is for the wonderful illustrations. The printing quality and color reproductions are outstanding.

The best Japanese cookbook!
I'm very passionate about Japanese cooking and have many cookbooks. This is the best, it does not only give you all the classic recipes from sushi to terriyaki and tempura, but the book also contains a lot of healthy excellent dishes.
The background of the ingredients and the recipes the author gives is so interesting you keep on reading. Unfortunately there are few pictures but that should not keep you from buying this book.

French Phonetics

wonderful book!
I have the previous edition of this book. It is wonderfully clear, complete and compact. It gives you the basics but also includes lots of detailed information about pronunciation that would be very hard to find out anywhere else or to figure out on your own. It has plenty of examples, points out the exceptions in detail and is very thorough! If you are not at all familiar with French pronunciation, you will have to turn elsewhere to find out the sounds of the international phonetic alphabet because this does not include a cassette or cd (at least the previous edition didn't) but that is less of a problem than you might think - all you have to do is match up any French audio source with a dictionary that uses the IPA, and you will see the connection. The book has a no-nonsense, direct and authoritative tone that I found quite charming. You will have no doubt that the author knows what she is talking about! Even if you have a set of tapes for French pronunciation from some other source, this book should be very helpful. Highly recommended.
