Using literature to teach art
This book is an excellent introductory tool to Van Gogh when reading with primary age children, especially in a bilingual, spanish speaking classroom. The story follows Van Gogh during his stay in France and the friendship with the son of a mailcarrier. This friendship led to the most prolific period of Van Gogh's career. The illustrations lead the reader along in discovering how Van Gogh was inspired to paint some of his most famous works. The story is a wonderful story that will inspire children to create their art!

A useful and sensible guide for classroom teachers
Changing Attitudes: A Strategy For Motivating Students To Learn by Vincent Ryan Ruggiero (a pioneer in the teaching of creative and critical thinking who is currently President of Mind Power, Inc.) is a useful and sensible guide for classroom teachers to helping and getting through to their students who are scholastically impeded with negative attitudes toward school, schoolwork, and teachers. Individual chapters focus upon how to identify negative attitudes, how to show students to express their attitudes as ideas, and how to help students learn to analyze these ideas for themselves. One example is learning to replace the harmful idea of "Whoever disagrees with me commits an offense against me" to "Disagreement is not necessarily personal. It can be exclusively about the idea in question, and in that case no offense is committed." Changing Attitudes is also very highly recommended for parents who are attempting to teach their own children the basics of sound reasoning and critical thinking, as well as formal classroom educators.

Variety is the spice of life
This is a fantastic compendium of many of the best chefs in America and some of their finest preparations. You've got Romano, Vongerichten, Boulud, Keller, O'Connell...even relative newcomers like Patricia Yeo and Wylie Dufresne. It is an outstanding resource for getting a taste of the various styles and approaches...including multiple no-stir risotto recipes and other kitchen hints. Preparation times and a recipe index are provided to make this a very well done production, including a photo for one of each chef's preparations (each chef gets about half a dozen recipes included).

The meals are mostly accessible to the home cook and very clearly presented. They were obviously kitchen-tested in order to get into the New York Times from where these recipes are drawn, so no bogus preparations. Plus these chefs didn't hold anything back seeing as the New York Times is read by their target demographic and it's a competitive arena.

Anyone who wants to kick their culinary skills up a few thousand notches over Emeril & the food TV gang ought to invest wisely in this delectable tome.

Childhood Eyes
Never have I read a book of poetry that has evoked such apowerful vision of growing up black, poor and in the country. Growingup in an "economically deprived" neighborhood myself, I was able to identify with Mr. Tolliver's graphic description of poverty in Black America. Mr. Tolliver's poetry wasn't preachy nor was it trying to teach a lesson, it was just stating the facts. I came away with the feeling that Mr. Tolliver has no regrets about the way he grew up.

BRAVO, VINCENT!
