student friendly text for general psych students
This text has received rave reviews from my students. It is reader-friendly, well-organized and up-to-date. The authors have integrated biological, cultural and social, psychological and other aspects in their explanantions. The case studies are well done and on target, simple yet precise. This text works well for a semester course (ours in twelve weeks and I have found that I can adapt it to that period of time). There is enough theory to interest advanced students, and enough basic "criteria/DSM lists" to satisfy the more [cognitively] concrete members of the class.

Account of the Black Charaibs in the Island of st Vincents

HONDURAS GARAFINA VIA ST VINCENTS AND AFRICA
This is the first book I have ever read which speaks to the origin of both St. Vincents Island and what today we call Honduras. The majesty of precolonial East African people lives on through the African slaves who were washed ashore on St. Vincents and lived to grow and thrive. So successful were they, that the mighty English military had to physically capture and deport them to Honduras, where they again grew and thrived.

The descendents of those very people now populate much of today's Honduras and St. Vincents Island. They fashioned their own language, which has survived and is now known as garifanu. This book is must reading for those who are serious about the real Central American History.

Unpacking an on-going dialogue
Although African American studies classes often avoid the subject, and Bible scholars pretend there is no such reality, African Americans have been engaging that which has come to be known as the Holy Bible ever since the first slave was brought to the shores of the so-called "New World." Wimbush sees no reason to continue the uncomfortable silence. Instead, calling together experts from psychology, sociology, art history, religion, history, and other fields, Wimbush opens up a dialogue about the uneasy relationship between African Americans and the Bible. Scholars engage folks as disparate as W. E. B. DuBois, August Wilson, Digable Planets, and Orishatukeh Faduma. Subjects range widely, as much to expand the dialogue as to illuminate its breadth and depth. Make no mistake, this is not "easy reading." But regardless of your field, you will find this text richly informative. Do be sure to read the introductory essay and the explanatory essay by Barbara Holdredge. The former sets out the project; the latter details its implications, for at least one field. Also, be, clear, you will not find "Africans" of the Biblical world in this book. That is not the point. But if you are interested in this rich interaction, this book will wet your appetite for future explorations. Let the dialogue begin.

Excellent overview of substance use and violence
This book does a wonderful job of syhthesizing very complicated material. The authors have certainly done their homeowork by obtaining cutting edge research and have a solid background in terms of related theories and past research findings. The text is clearly and well-written. Both the novice and the more refined reader will benefit from this book.

Airborne and Allergenic Pollen of North America
Published in Hardcover by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (1999)
Authors: Walter H. Lewis and Vincent E. Zenger
Amazon base price: $65.00
Average review score:

Simply, the very best book on plants and pollen.
I am the author of Allergy-Free Gardening, published by Ten Speed Press, and I have read a huge number of books about pollen grains and the plants that produce them. There are many fine books on the subject but by far, Airborne and Allergenic Pollen of North America, by Dr. Walter H. Lewis, is hands down the best.
The writing here is complex but easily understandable. The material and research in the book are deep and break considerable new ground. Today, as allergies continue to skyrocket, as deaths from asthma grow larger every year, I find it hard to understand how this book has gone out of print!
This may not be a book for the average lay person but for any serious student of allergies, horticulture, and pollen, this is a must read. I'd think that every allergist would want to own a copy of Airborne and Allergenic Pollen of North America.
The lead author, Dr. Lewis, is considered by his peers in biology to be THE medical botanist. He is after all, also the author of the seminal work, Medical Botany, from Wiley& Sons publishers. But unlike many who write about allergy, Lewis also knows a great deal about plants. He is, among many other things, the Senior Botanist at the Missouri Botanical Gardens.
I can not recommend this wonderful book highly enough.

A beautiful book of beautiful art.
Wayne Douglas Barlowe is one of the greatest living illustrators. This book shows some of his best work through the years. It is truly wonderful. As a sidenote, the back of the book shows preliminary art from a future project, Barlowe's Inferno. It should be noted that Barlowe's Inferno is now available and is excellent.
