This is a book that challenges you in certain ways.
Back in the mid-70's, I was a high-school student of Father O'Malley. He used his "Meeting the Living God" in a theology course he taught for seniors, so it is hard, if not impossible, for me to separate the book and the person. I'd like to say this, though: One Friday or Saturday night way back then, relaxing on a cool night in a parked car with two or three buddies, we were not talking about the upcoming big game or trying to get into a bar without IDs. Of all things, we were talking about Father O'Malley and his book. One basic idea in both the class and the book was for the student/reader to realize what a Christian is and to act on that by kind of lighting a fire under one's ....arse. At one point in that parked car of twenty years or so ago, a buddy, talking about Father, blurted out (a little too emotionally), "He's a living god." Father O'Malley would balk at that, but my friend was probably talking more about himself and whatever changes he was going through. Both the course and the book really did get many of us past the point of thinking about certain things and into the realm of acting. In this way, and through my "Meeting the Living God" experience of the book and the course, I felt very similar to my feelings about Soren Kierkegaard's "Concluding Unscientific Postscript." In both books, the authors are asking and trying to find out the answer to this question: "What do I have to do to become a Christian"?

Fantastic for the classroom!
I highly recommend this book to any teacher who wants to introduce her students to performing Shakespeare. We used this abridged version with our fifth and sixth grade students (we added in the whole of Puck's final speech, however!). The book pairs Shakespeare's language with a vernacular version of the play; the original language and vernacular "translation" are placed on facing pages. With the help of the vernacular version and a lot of coaching, our students were able to understand the play, memorize the lines, and perform the play in front of an audience. What was most exciting about the experience was that you could tell the kids *understood* the Shakespearian language from the way they spoke the lines -- they *said* them, rather than recited them. I credit this book's design and approach to the play with helping the kids to understand so much. We approached the idea of doing Shakespeare with this age group with some trepidation -- but with the help of this book, it was the highlight of our school year. (The book also has helpful sections which introduce the kids to the basics of the theater).

The Best in Years
This book on Model-Based Depth Imaging is the best that I've read in years. As a passionate Geologist, I would recommend this book to anyone who not only has a career in geology, but also just a passing intrest in Model-Based Depth Imaging. It reads more like a novel. I could barely put it down! A MUST READ!

Unjustly forgotten
This is the reprint of the edition published in 1797, with engravings of William Blake. The poem itself, enormously popular in the 18th century, is now shrouded in obscurity, and it stays in print only due to Blake's illustrations. But despite of its unpopularity, I found it quite enjoyable. It is best read in one sitting, without interrupting the constant flow of ideas and thoughts. It is a meditation, at once introspective and all-encompassing, a contemplation of Death, Time, Friendship, and Immortality of man. Granted, it does tend to drag on too much in the last chapter, but the first ones are so good they're worthy of being memorized. Blake's engravings, surrounding the text as a frame, capture the essense of the poem and at the same time enhance it, adding to it even more depth. The poem's abstract concepts take shape, making some passages more memorable. (This edition includes a commentary on the pictures' symbolism.) The book is worth getting for the engravings alone; it is a work of art in every sense of the word.

North of Nowhere

Midwest Book Review - engaging story, well told
North of Nowhere is a coming of age story with a twist. What distinguishes it from others of its type is the author's ability as writer. William Reid is a VERY good writer who tells a story in engaging style.
Darren Freeman is 17 years old and heading down a destructive path. The product of an upper middle class family, Darren is a "pot head" who doesn't seem to give a damn about anything but smoking dope and defying or embarrassing his social climbing parents.
Carrie Spears is main "caretaker" of irresponsible, alcoholic parents. At 17, all she can remember is cleaning up vomit and the messes created by the adults in her world. Life has not been pretty or easy for Carrie, and she trusts no one but herself. Life at home and on the streets has hardened her to everything and everyone.
As a last ditch effort to change their outlooks, Darren and Carrie's parents send them to the Grizzly Bear Adventure Outings in the Alaskan wilderness. Camp Counselor Gary Cornwall is a military wannabe who uses shock tactics as a means of bringing rebellious teenagers to heel. He is not a man Darren and Carrie find easy to like or respect, and Cornwall soon finds he's bitten off more than he can chew with these two strong-willed teens. When Darren and Carrie escape the camp and strike out on their own, Cornwall fails to track them down and they are left on their own to survive the Alaskan wilderness.
The tale this author spins is an exciting one, about two fearless teens who work together as a team to survive and finally thrive as human beings. Their respect for each other's strengths and weaknesses is touching and uplifting. Whatever nature throws at them - bears and freezing blizzards, near mortal wounds or icy rivers - these two young people take in stride and face together. Love blooms, but is mutually put on hold because survival is their foremost common goal. From Alaskan natives who befriend them, they discover universal truths that give their lives fuller meaning:
1. Alaska and the world have become a zoo the white man left by accident.
2. The killing of animals is not glorious but a necessity to feed humans. It leaves the hunter sad and shaken.
How Darren and Carrie come to a richer understanding of themselves and the world over time is the beauty of this story. I highly recommend it to all ages.
