Chills where other books cannot reach
The Woman in Black is quite simply the best ghost story written so far. Short and lacking in the gore that is integral to average ghost stories. This is an impecable tale of a malevolent spirit who will not stop in her revenge on the society that wronged her. The story chills in a manner far more piercing than the cold marsh mists integral to the plot.

An old-fashioned ghost story that delivers.
This is old-fashioned ghost story telling at its best; short, simple and superbly told. Best of all it delivers the goods, a shiver, a jump and a fright that lingers. Those looking for cheap thrills or gore will find this one way too tame, for the rest of you this little novel does not disappoint.

Creepalicious!
Truly one of the creepiest, spine tingling novels I've read. Beware: this is not a Kingsian book of gore. This story of a malevolent force is subtle and convincing. I was actually shocked that it disturbed me for such a "simple" story. I highly recommend Hill's book for a quick creepy read.

Melanie Gideon writes a fantasy about real life
At first I wasn't sure what to make of this book, but after I realized that Ms. Gideon was writing a tale of fantasy, I was able to allow her message to reach deep into a part of me. This book is a story about overcoming the obstacles of the past: our mother's struggles, our fears, and the memories that come down to us from generation to generation which keep us from being truly human. This is a parable, teaching us that it is better to live than to give up, that it is possible to overcome the things that kept us down in the past, and that it is necessary to forgive what others have done to us. Only in forgiving and loving can we be free. A great book!

An incredible story of womanhood!
This is the most amazing book of it's kind that I've ever read. It truly puts womanhood into words that I have never heard before. This book is a great story that one MUST detach themselves to reality to read, that's what makes it so great! My mother gave me this book and I put off reading it for the longest time because I just didn't think I would be interested. But now, I have all my girlfriends and their mothers reading it. Understand that it is not for everyone, as those who cannot manage to detach themselves from reality will not understand a story that gives us a talking house, a clever river, and three travelers that reminded me of the sun, the moon, and the stars! Oh, but Gideon's writing style is so beautiful and so descriptive that you can taste the food and smell the flowers as you read!

A Powerful Examination of Womanhood
I picked up this book at a clearance sale and it has become one of my favorites. I am a great lover of fantasy works which force the reader to bring in interpretations and knowledge which they possess, so this novel was ideal for me. Gideon describes the intensely emotional bonds between women (mother/daughter, friend/friend) in a poetic and beautiful way. Told in an enchanting style of exposing only bits and pieces of the characters' stories, as is how we remember as humans, the reader weaves through the sorrow, elation and everyday life of the women in the novel. The reader becomes immersed in a world of talking houses, giddy rivers, thousand year old women, and a young girl who swallows the moon. The characters display great emotions as they tell the story of generations of pain and healing.

An Unforgettable Classic: A Must Read
John D. Fitzgerald, in the tradition of Mark Twain, wrote a semi-fictitious account of his childhood as a Mormon in Utah. The milieu and time for "The Great Brain" series is a Victorian, early 1900's era, making the stories more in the lines of Tom Sawyer and Huck Fynn. But that does not belittle this timeless classic written in the 70's. The Great Brain is in fact an interesting character to follow. The stories are told from the point of view of his younger brother, as he follows him through many schemes (all of which are money scams) and escapades, which somehow wind down to moral lessons. The Great Brain is a humorous, brilliant and witty work of historic fiction that is sure to touch every reader in some way. I first read the series as a young child myself, growing up in much the same way The Great Brain does- a strict religious family that promotes hard work and academic education. These stories are hard to find nowadays, Victorian morales having slipped away somehow in our modern day. I am glad to know that Amazon.com still has these great books and I recommend them to everyone, young and old. For me, reading the novels was a form of escape, as well as an insightful glimpse of a time that was far more innocent than our own- the violent gangs of today and MTV, Britney Spears, Joy of Pepsi, Ossie Osbourne generation compare nothing to the rebelliousnes of the Great Brain. All of the books are enjoyable, and it is not until the last book in the series, "The Great Brain Reforms" (the name says it all) that we discover the startling growth and changes the punky, swindling, intelligent adult-trapped in the body of a child Great Brain undergoes. A Must Read.

Trust me, he doesnt actually
John Dennis Fitzgerald intended to chronicle his youth in Utah for adults, not children. His publisher thought otherwise and the result are these gems. I don't even call them children's lit gems because I find them just as enjoyable as an adult. Before I go on, you should know that Fitzgerald wrote one book about his youth that is for adults, called "Papa Married a Mormon". It is one of the most amazing books on the American west that I have ever read. Sadly, it is out of print, and you may, like me, have to pay an exorbitant sum to get a copy. Trust me, save up and do it. Now back to this book. Every single Great Brain book in the series is pure gold, and the entire set can be had cheaply, so I say buy them all at once. I "put my money where my mouth is" as Tom the Great Brain would say, and bought the lot.

Best series of books ala Tom Sawyer-esque
The Great Brain series is my very favorite of all the books I read as a kid. I recall beginning reading the series as a fourth grader, and re-read them ...and even now if I want an easy read that is guaranteed to make me chuckle I pull them out and read them. Also, Harriet the Spy, Little House series, and of course classics like Treasure Island, Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer will appeal as well.

Perfect!.....
Melissa is urged to compete in Westdale High's first homecoming in 25 years by her friends, Izzy and Celeste. At first, Melissa's anxious to start campaigning, however, her spirits are dampened when the news of why Westdale hasn't had a homecoming until now gets around to her. Apparently, homecoming queen Brenda Sheldon had an accident on the night of homecoming. Rumor has it that her ghost is still seen around town, wanting to reclaim her crown. After a brief scare, Melissa overlooks the talk, until terrible accidents start occurring to the others running for the title; two barely missing Melissa! Who's doing this, and why? The answer is revealed in the exciting conclusion!.....

"Homecoming Queen" by John Hall was amazing! Mystery and suspense seems to wrap you up in an exciting blanket, nonstop! It was one of the few books that actually gave me chills. It is nicely descriptive, with a killer-surprise ending! The only flaw for me personally, was that I had previously read a book, "My Bloody Valentine," that was similar to this book, which took a little originality out of it for me! If you haven't read that book, though, you should be fine! Enjoy!

Homecoming Queen is my favourite book.
Home coming Queen is about a girl called Mellisa, who moves to a new school called Westdale. She gets nominated to run for Home coming Queen, until she finds out about Brenda Sheldon. Thats when Mellisa starts getting weird phone calls and strange stuff begins to happen to her, and one by one the nominees who are also running for home coming queen, have very fatal accidents. I think that Home coming Queen is a really excellent book and it's never boring. It is very well discripted and thet helps you to imagine the events taking place. The book is written by John Hall. I would give it 10/10 because it's the best book I've ever read.

THE BOOK WAS COOL AND I LOVED ALL OF THE SCENES
WELL IT IS ABOUT THIS GIRL NAMED MELLISA BRADY IS IN THE TWELTH GRADE AND SHE IS RUNNING FOR HOMECOMING QUEEN BUT WHEN SHE RUNS FOR THE QUEEN STRANGE THINGS START TO HAPPEN TO HER FRIENDS AND HER AND SHE DOSENT KNOW WHY IT IS HAPPENING

This book was great
I thought that this book was really good because it was mostly on Lila and Bruce. (my fave charecters). Lila falls for a docter, Porter Davis after she has an accident. Porter is a phcyo who tries to make Lila belive she is crazy. Also Jess plays tricks on Tom because he moves in with her and Liz.

READ IT NOW!!!!!
The House Of Death was so cool, I read it in an hour because I couldn't put it down! I'm a long-time Sweet Valley fan, and the last thiriller this good was Sweet Valley High #???-A Killer On Board. I enjoyed it.

You Can't Put it Down!!
This was a great book. I read it in about two nights because I could'nt put it down. It is very suspenceful. I was really scared for Lila. I can't believe she fell for Porter Davis. I felt bad for Bruce. You'll have to read the book to find out why I felt this way.

A book about UPA heroine
Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, had a glorious history and at one time was the capital of ancient Rus'. Yet the Ukraine gained independence only upon the collapse of the Soviet Union. Oppressed by both Poland and Russia/Soviet Union, many Ukrainians felt resentful and hostile towards both Poles and Russians. During World War II, the Soviet Union and Poland fought on the allied side, so an enemy of the Soviet Union, such as the UPA, became an enemy of the West. While the Ukrainians fought heroically both for the Soviet Union and against, they obviously had no monopoly on heroism. There is also some reliable evidence of the UPA members killing innocent Polish and Jewish civilians. Unfortunately, some Poles retaliated against the UPA atrocities in a revengeful manner. This is an important book, which should be read by all those interested in the war on the Eastern Front during World War II.

A story of strength and determination
This book is the memoirs of Maria Savchyn who spent 15 years of her life (from the ages of 14 to 29) in the Ukrainian underground army fighting for freedom against first the Nazis and then the Soviets. It is an exciting story of strength and determination in the face of overwhelming opposition.

In 1925 Maria Savchyn was born in a Ukrainian village east of the city of Lviv. At that time this was a part of Poland. Ukrainians living in this part of Poland formed the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) to seek independence from Poland, but in 1939 the partition of Poland put Western Ukraine under Soviet control. The OUN continued their activities for independence during this early Soviet occupation, and they formed the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) when the Nazis gained control early in World War II.Fighting first against the Nazis and then the Russians until the mid-1950s, the UPA resisted the occupation forces and fought for an independent Ukraine 50 years before the country actually gained its independence in 1991.

Maria joined the youth division of the OUN in 1940 when she was 14. Later she married a prominent leader of the group. She was an active member until 1954 when she was captured by the KGB. Involved in propaganda, Maria talks more about the day-to-day life of the underground than armed resistance. She gives a remarkably detailed account of her life in the UPA. This includes the names of the towns and villages she stayed in and the names of the people she worked with in the underground.

Its a sad story to read since during the period covered most of her fellow rebels were either captured or killed. Maria herself lost both her children to stay with the rebels. For the last nine years of the resistance she and her allies spent every winter in underground bunkers which were cramped, moist, and dark.

Yet for anyone interested in Ukrainian history or in resistance movements this is essential reading. Few members of the UPA have lived to tell their stories so Maria's book opens the door on a chapter of history long hidden from view. This is, however, not a history of the OUN and the UPA. That book remains to be written and will probably require access to KGB records.

I only wish this book came with a map that detailed the region and the villages mentioned in the text. Most English-language readers will not have sufficient geographic knowledge of the region to follow Maria's exploits without a good map.

An Astonishing Story
This is a story of astonishing courage, resilience, resourcefulness and dignity in the face of the overwhelming resources of the totalitarian Soviet mammoth. The story is told plainly and simply, almost matter-of-factly about a struggle against all odds, a struggle to prevent Ukraine's being drowned in the poisons of Sovietism. Perhaps most striking is the calm dignity with which the author and her colleagues in the Ukrainian underground faced death almost daily, and their quiet determination to continue their mission, well into the 1950's, to fight for some semblance of normalcy in Ukraine no matter what the personal and familial costs to the author and those with whom she served so nobly. This is a stunner.

A good start
Very clearly written, full of examples and counterexamples, making use of pictures but never sacrificing rigor, the authors of this book have given students of topology a superb introduction to the field. Many students have been educated in topology by using this book, and it is sure to remain a classic in the field. It builds a solid understanding of the basic rudiments and intuition behind point-set, geometric, and algebraic topology. There is a lot of material covered in the book, and some very specialized subjects, such as Cech and Vietoris homology and some dimension theory, but with some preserverance and concentration, the entire book can be grasped within reasonable time constraints. Probably the only minus to the book is the lack of exercises. This is a quite serious omission, for the only way to master a subject is to work problems that require careful thought for their solution.

The beginning student of topology should probably read this book with the following mindset: try to think of ways and techniques that you would devise to study the structure of a topological space. Homotopy and homology (in various forms) are the standard techniques for doing this. These strategies have varying degrees of success, but their use in topology now seems to be reaching a saturation limit, even though the explicit calculation of homotopy groups is still a very active area. New techniques and concepts, representing sort of a "large deviation" from the standard ones discussed in this book, will be needed to make further progress in the study of complicated topological spaces. Something more is needed now, that is completely different than homology and homotopy theory, that will make more transparent the properties of these spaces. These new techniques will be somewhat radical from the standpoint of current ones, but they will be more effective from a conceptual (and computational) point of view.

A Professional Topologist loves this book.
When I was a graduate student 40 years ago there were very few texts in topology. The only two that I recall being in use were Hocking and Young and the book by Kelley. Over the years my copy of Hocking and Young has become quite worn. It is a wonderful book that gives the true flavor of topology. It is also contains a large number of topics that one can refer to later on. It becomes quite apparent very earlier that no one will be able to fully appreciate the book in the time span of one course. It is a book that must be read and reread over and over again. It is a real classic. I do not believe that it is the type of book that would be of much or any general interest but to a point set topologist it is a classic and must for his bookself. I am quite surprised over its low price. I can not help but compare it with the newer book by Munkres. I recall seeing Munkres book many years ago and disliking it. But the current edition seems much closer in flavor to HY and Munkres book is quite good. Munkres style is much clearer than HY, but both books target a very specialized group of people. Neither book is for the faint of heart and will take many years to absorb. Considering that Munkres book is 9 times as expensive as HY, HY seems to be the better buy.

Theoretical Dictionary
An excellent book, not for those persons unfamiliar with the topic of topolgy; yet, combined with simpler texts this book is a goldmine of topological theorems and their proofs.

Enjoyable and fun book.
My daughter received the large paper book for her 1st Christmas and loved it so much that it wore out and had to be discarded. She recently received the card board book for her 3 year birthday but it was a little disapointing because it didn't have the beginning page with Daisy's mother talking to her in bed and doesn't have the last pages with the 10 penguins joining 100 friends and with Daisy's room where you try to find the 10 penguins, which is what my daughter had especially enjoyed.

This one is a pleasure to open again and again
This book is a really great bed-time book for even the littlest listeners. But, it also teaches simple concepts such as counting to ten, and the names of animals.

The final two page spread contains a sort of "I Spy" game that includes all of the animals from the previous pages.

The illustrations in this book are especially well done. Bed time books are read so frequently, and so repeatedly, that it's great to have something that I look forward to looking at so often.

A PERFECT COMPANION ON THE WAY TO DREAM LAND
.

This would have to be the perfect bedtime book for the under fives.

The illustrations of many of our favourite animals have gentle subtle tones. They all look kind and unthreatening.

The count down from 1 to 10 as the pages turn would get most sleepy heads soon snuggling down under the covers.

There are some valuable educational elements in the book as well. Young children will learn that many creatures are nocturnal. Perhaps the more inquisitive (and less sleepy) child may want to go outside and look for owls in the old oak tree!

The presence of the full moon on many pages is a nice touch. Children could also learn that on the other side of the world while they sleep, it is day over there.

terrific!!
wow this book has it all! i mean, it's scary, suspenceful, but it still has it's funny bits. it's a must-read. ok, the plots. william white is stalking liz. sending her treatening notes, leaving her things (such as a barbie doll that looks like her with it's head twisted). and he's framed todd so it looks like he's the one doing it!! william decides to kill all of liz's friends (tom, danny, nina, maia, denise, isabella, winston, everyone minus jessica), they're "too interfering". so in the book, he's hatching a plot to get everyone at the next school football game where he can get liz, and kill everyone else... a sideplot is winston trying to become the new "braino" a school tradition of a clown who performs at the school games. this adds humor to the story, as winston always does!! a definete MUST-read!!

one of the best books out there!
This is one of the best books I have read! It was very scary, actually. I have a good imagination and I could picture everyone together being terrified, and each one of the main characters jumping out of the van, trying to save themselves. And I could picture William White's car blowing......Maybe you should read it for yourself. But it was not only scary and very suspenseful, it also had some romantic and funny moments in it too. If you love SVU, you'll LOVE this book! :)

Wow! Scary and Suspensful -- The BEST SVU
I read this book many times. Always enjoying it. I mean it has the elements every good book should with my favorite twins in the world. I love this one and it is a classic Sweet Valley!

Great book!!!!!
This book is great. Jessica Wakefield hooks up with Nick Fox. She loves secrets, and she can't wait to find out Nick's. Some parts of it were predictable, others weren't. Jessica meets Nick Fox, who's cute and mysterious. She knows he has many secrets, and she wants to find out every last one of them! Elizabeth Wakefield is working on two projects- planning her boyfriend, Tom Watts's surprise birthday party, and helping George Conroy find his missing son. Could both projects be combined? It's pretty exciting, but a little predictable how that scenario turns out. Celine Boundreaux is back at SVU and wants to fit in. She tries to buy her way into the Thetas, and steal Jessica's boyfriend, Nick Fox. Tom Watts is really sad because of his family, but Elizabeth ahs two surprises for him. Jessica is trying to figure out Nick Fox's secret. It was really exciting, and very romantic. This book is great!
