Gives profound insight to what life was like
Capably edited by C. Russell Hunley, and enhanced with an extensive bibliography and a comprehensive index, The 14th U.s. Infantry Regiment In The American Civil War: John Young Letters is Volume 14 in the Civil War Heritage Series, and a powerful primary source that gives profound insight to what life was like serving as a noncommissioned officer. From the daily camp routine to traumatic battlefield violence that included looting houses and shooting the wounded after Fredericksburg this is a powerful, personal, intensely vivid account which is strongly recommended for Civil War Studies supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.

An excellent book for all ages of readers!
When I was 13 years old this book was given to me. It intrigued me as I read the back cover. I read the book and was astonished by John Dowd's amazing writing. He took me into the book and kept me there. I couldn't put the book down. The book starts out in Canada where a young boy named Jim is trapped in a neighborhood he hates. His father passed away in a car wreck so he lives with his mother now. Jim has toughened up since the wreck. A wealthy fisherman calls on Jim's mother and in the midst of things the man offers Jim a job on a fishing boat called The Kingfisher. Jim is offered $... dollars a month he is on the boat. From there he has many adventures in the Queen Charlet Islands on the tip of the Canadian coast. If you have an interest in boats or just love good writing you will defiantly enjoy this book, I did at the age of 13.

Addresses to Young Men

Solid Biblical Advice for Any Age
Addresses to Young Men is a work designed to aid the problems of the teen-ager growing into manhood yet conveys solid advice that could be directed toward an adult audience just as well. The auther seems to sit down with the reader in a quiet study to explore the nature and duties of life with the reader--pointing time and time again to the discipline of biblical truth in morality and piety (two words whose meaning has soured in a post-modern world). The book is well written and has a smooth flow of language and ideas. I particularly enjoyed the many solid aphorisms to be found from cover to cover. For example: "Piety and sound morality are a nations strength, more than it's armies and it's navies; its wealth more than it's commerce; and it's glory, more than it's literature, science, and victories" (p. 31). This and hundreds more. I would recommend this book to all who want to examine the true meaning of "success" and "happiness" in this world who also have an eye toward the world to come.

It's excellent!
After reading this book, my 20-month-old son would follow what ELMO did in the book, pretending to be a cat, a lion, a worm. For example, he would "meow" and creep when he saw a cat in the book. It was fun for a baby boy to learn about animals in that way.

Baptists on the American Frontier: A History of Ten Baptist Churches of Which the Author Has Been Alternately a Member
Published in Hardcover by Mercer University Press (1995)
Authors: John Taylor and Chester Raymond Young
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

John Taylor's biography & book: humble Pioneer Gospel Genius
The biography of Pioneer Baptist preacher, John Taylor (1752-1835, Virginia-Kentucky) was superbly researched and written by Chester Raymond Young, the editor. His annotation of John's pithy, and sometimes rambling discourse, on his 10 Baptist Churches in the Bluegrass and Ohio R. region of early Kentucky, really helps one to understand the history of the pioneer settlers. By reading the biography first, one gains a much deeper appreciation of who the people and family members are, whom John Taylor mentions in his book. This is a treasure trove for both geneologists and students of religion.

An Overlooked Master
John Gordon is an extraordinary writer with an extraordinary career. He's been writing books for children and young adults for something like 30 years, and yet it's impossible to find more than a couple of his books in print at any time these days. His work is largely of a high standard and would certainly be appreciated by those who enjoy more enduringly better-known writers like Robert Westall or Alan Garner, writers with whom he certainly deserves to be mentioned. Critically, Gordon is regarded as a writer of conspicuous ability, and his The House On The Brink is recognised as one of the best stories written in the M.R.James style ever.

And yet, he goes largely un-noticed, unremarked, unprinted, and -I fear - unread even during today's enlightened times when children's books are finding a wider audience.

Although I think that some of Gordon's best work can be found in novels like Gilray's Ghost or the M.R. James pastiche The Flesh Eater, I adore The Burning Baby, because all of the horror stories it contains are short, and have bite - more than that, they have the atmosphere of menace and lurking threat which typifies his best work, but in concentration. The dark moods of his longer works are presented here in an accessible and immediate form; this book is both a superb introduction to the writer, and is at the same time among his best work.

Indeed, forget the 'children's' tag. While this book doesn't contain conspicuous or gratuitous horrors of an 'adults-only' kind, it could certainly hold its own among horror and ghost stories for an 'adult' market. This is a collection of rare mood and power.
