Collecting Processing and Germinating Seeds of Wildland Plants
Published in Hardcover by Timber Pr (1986)
Authors: James A. Young and Cheryl G. Young
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

Excellent, useful info. Worth the wait to get it.
Excellent source of info on seed germination
applicable to the novice and expert.
What I liked best were the succinct
pretreatment and planting directions for a
wide variety of trees and shrubs.

I also found the information on collecting
and storing seeds immediately useful and
valuable.

A Collection of Upper South Carolina Genealogical and Family Records: From the Private Files of the Late Puline Young

Geneology of Upstate South Carolina - nicely done
A LOT of good data for anyone reseaching this area of the country, or just wanting to know about the families of the region. A full description of the book itself was written by "bookmomma77" on eBay. I found the book very useful for understanding the relationships of the "founding families" of this part of the country. As a transplant to Upstate SC, I found it very useful to learn and know the history of the ancestors of people still living here. Some of my newly found friends are the latest part of this history and the convention of using one of the last names as a first name is quite prevelent here. I always ask them if they were named after the streets... :)

"Bookmama77" (an eBay non de plume) writes (and I edited): A Collection of Upper South Carolina Genealogical & Family Records, Volume One, as edited by James E. Wooley c. 1979, Published in 1980. Hardcover as new condition, attractive "rust" with black highlighting the gilt lettering, [6x9], 416 pages, INDEXED! What is this book? Hmmmmm. This is just a great book, bid on it. (Very big grin). Ok, "these records comprise the loose files of the late Pauline Young, one of South Carolina's most widely know genealogists' on Upper South Carolina. Each family record is filed with names of persons mentioned. These records include: * Estate Settlements * Bastardy Bonds * Deeds * Wills * Coroner's inquests (fun stuff) * Abstracts of letters pertaining to estates, guardianships, tavern licenses, etc It is estimated that each book in this series contain more than 40,000 names of early settler in Upper South Carolina from the mid 1700's down to the 1850's. These records are primarily from counties such as: Pendleton District Abbeville Edgefield Greenville Pickens The print is very legible, though small. A lot of data is packed on these pages. In Volume III you're gonna find the exact same words as this one (sorry to be boring, fingers get tired). However, each index will be abstracted individually (YEAH), on to it... Earth Rising: Book One: The Changing Earth Trilogy
Published in Paperback by Lightstream Publications (01 March, 1999)

Amazon base price: $5.95

Earth Rising kept my interest all the way through.
Jenny Powers became my friend quickly. I cared about what happened to her. The people, events, and vocabulary are realistic enough to make one make at least a few emergency plans! The book has lots of action and covers a very scary subject, but it tells teens that whatever happens, there will be someone who knows what to do and their help will be needed to do it.

Sage advice....
I thought I would be the 50th person to write a "testimonial" for THE GREEN PHARMACY -- ANTI-AGING PRESCRIPTIONS by James Duke, but it turns out no one has written a review to date. This is a big surprise for me because Dr. Duke's book is wonderful.

Dr. Duke (he has a Ph.D.) retired from the USDA where he worked as Chief of the Medicinal Plant Resources Laboratory for years. In retirement (he's age 72), he remains active in ReNuPeru, a medicinl herb garden in the Peruvian Amazon maintained by the Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research. In other words, he has credentials in plant pharmaecology recognized by the U.S. Government.

Dr. Duke owns a six-acre farmette in Fulton Maryland where he raises medicinal/food plants. I discovered Duke in a book on herbalist gardens entitled, THE HERBALIST'S GARDEN, by Shatoiya and Richard de la Tour. Both books (Duke and de la Tour) were reviewed by a local garden expert in the Washington Post. The Post article and the de la Tour book contain beautiful photographs of Duke's garden but alas he has included no photographs in his own book (why I gave it 4 stars).

I've been growing and using herbs for over forty years (I drank Camomile tea and ate bean and barley soup in the 1960s), and I own a number of books on this subject. Dr. Duke's book on "anti-aging prescriptions" appeals to me because 1) I am older and the book meets my immediate needs, 2) the book is laid out by ailment or "challenge" not by herb. In othr words, I don't have to hunt for salient information.

For example, if you're worried about cracking and peeling skin you can turn to Section 22. 'Smooth Skin' and read about the various approaches, techniques, etc. you might use to improve your skin's health. I discovered the flaxseed oil I have been taking for symtoms of menopause is exactly what I need for skin health but I should buy a variant that includes Borage or Evening Primrose oil.

Duke has many helpful suggestions including eating what he calls the Paleolithic diet consisting of many servings of vegetables and fruits and fewer servings of meats, cheeses and other dairy items (I'm not eating grubs--nor does he recomend them). And, yes you've probably read about this diet--it's the official USDA recommended diet--but Duke's value-added information is the list of ingredient he pinpoints for health. He explains why prunes, plums and other dark fruit are good for you, and why beans other than soy beans make a difference. To begin your older years (50+) in good health, I recommend you read Dr. Duke's book and practice what he preaches.

The Most Readable James Biography
This first volume on James's life in relation to the writings brings us up to 1881 and The Portrait of a Lady. Novick can be more daring than Leon Edel was, especially about James's love life, as there are now more letters available. It's also nice not to have Edel's over-the-top psychological readings of the works and his Literary-Guild style of narration. Readers may well have overlooked this important book, as it got little press when it came out--the NY Times Book Review gave it two paragraphs in their "Books in Brief" department! But when vol. ii comes out, we will have the most balanced and readable biography of James to date.

Lavishly illustrated
Just like other books published by Dorling Kindersley, this one is profusely illustrated by closely-spaced drawings and photographs that almost crowd out text. It's a short book, at 72 pages, but it covers, however briefly, artists' materials used in drawing, as well as a large number of drawing techniques and subjects.

Artists' materials covered include pencils & colored pencils, pens & inks, chalks & charcoal, pastels, watercolors and paper. Techniques covered include ways of working, getting started, linear drawing, tonal drawing, layout & construction, forms and modeling. And subjects covered include buildings & architecture, interiors & exteriors, landscapes, figures & drapery, life drawing & portraits, movements & gestures and drawing for painting.

This is a good catalog of drawing techniques and subjects, but if you're interested in learning to make accurate, detailed, realistic drawings, it's not the one for you. Drawings by the author are quite impressionistic and underworked by comparison with those in, say, How to Draw the Human Head by Louise Gordon or Botanical Illustration in Watercolor by Eleanor B. Wunderlich or Rendering in Pen & Ink by Arthur L. Guptill.

1920s Chicago jazz atmosphere
This YA novel is a well-written and engrossing look into the Chicago jazz scene of the late 1920s. 12-year-old Paulie (who today would probably be diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder) finds his calling in learning to play jazz cornet. But his father wants him to enter the plumbing business, and even with his mother's support, Paulie can't keep his grades up enough to get permission to pursue his music. Paulie eventually has to choose -- lose his music, or lose his family? Published in 1996, this YA novel is now, sadly, out of print.

Not as good as the original but read it anyway.
A really good book, but almost too tragic. It still contains typical Donleavy wit, great characters, and the usual Irish, drunken, sexy fun, but this time the tragic love story brings the book down and makes it a bit too depressing.
