Short and VERY sweet
I can best describe A River Ran Out of Eden as an epic. It's a tale of courage, morals, and combatting inner demons. I would also not hesitate to call it a fable. It clearly shows how a single person can disrupt a perfect little domain. It tells the story of a family that has lived alone on an Aleutian island for years, and are perfect, until a stranger comes to the island. The plot is well-paced, there aren't many characters, but they are very well written. This book also presents the plot from every character's point of view, making it great to read. Each character has distinct problems, and I think their mishaps could easily be applied to everyday life. The symbolism is also applicable, the stranger in the book could easily symbolize modern life, and the family could represent all that is traditional. How these two concepts clash is very real, and makes a wonderful story as well.

Robert E Lee
Knute Rocken Young Athelete by Guernsey Van Riper Jr.is an excellent book for kids eleven to fifteen years of age. I would recommend
this book to boys more then girls because of the fact the main charter is a
young man and in the most parts of the book is about Knute as an
athlete. In this book, Knute the main charter, does many breath taking
things. Guernsey Van Riper Jr. gets the reader caught on his hook to
read this book. The events make them want to fall out of their chair.
Knute has a sister Anne who takes him out to the berry patch to gather
berries. On their way back from the berry patch Knute decides that he
wants to go swimming so Anne gives in and joins Knute. Suddenly . I
will leave you hanging. Try to get your hands on this book before it is
gone, Also try to get your hands on some of the other books that Guernsey
Van Riper Jr. has written.

No sycophant here
A wonderful juggernaut of a play. The play's intelligent ryhthm is not for the timid, but it's great fun to grab two friends and read out loud. I highly recommend this one. Leave your preconceived notions at home.

Nothing Left Out
J. Alison James has taken time travel out of the fantasy world and has put it into reality. In SING FOR A GENTLE RAIN, the author, J. A. James, is showing the reader how someone can change the past and how it will effect them and others for the rest of their lives. Though the use of vivid details, she takes the reader through ups and downs and twist and turns until the end where fantasy and reality are in one place. When one of the main characters, Spring Rain, acually sees two things that were impossible to see, J. A. James is making her point. When two very different things come together, like the rain and the strange man, it can change people's lives in a way that was unforeseen before.

This book is about how James, a 17-year-old high-school student living in the 1990's Southwest, tries to learn more about the Anasazi tribe, which dissappeared centuries ago. While trying to learn more, James is sucked back in time to the 13th century Southwest. Spring Rain, an Anasazi girl living there, prays for rain every morning to end the long drought. She discovers James and they create a great friendship, and fall in love. J. A. James wants the reader to know that Spring Rain believes James has brought the rain because it started to rain when James arrived. Some of the tribespeople think he's a god, but others are suspicious because James can't even set a trap or shoot an arrow. The author brings the past and present together in reality by having the two conceive a child together.

J. A. James is successful in shifting between the current and acient time periods. She gets right to the point and doesn't wander off like some authors. The knows exactly what's going on in the book because she puts a lot of attention to detail. J. A. James has a way of mixing fantasy with reality so that the story makes sense. A boy going back in time 700 years to help the Anasazi survive is believable in SING FOR A GENTLE RAIN.

Hola! If you are a first-time learner in Spanish, Somos Asi 1 is the best book to buy! It starts with simple phrases and becomes more advanced throughout the book. This book teaches you numbers, polite phrases, a few verbs, and a great glossary of many Spanish terms in the back of the book. This textbook is wonderful for middle-school students. Fiction for teens, by teens
First, I should admit a bias: I wrote one of the stories in this book. But it's not as an author that I want to recommend it (though I do think, seven years after writing it, that the story is pretty good). I am now a high school English teacher and have seen what a great effect these stories can have on other teenagers.

These stories -- honest, funny, moving, exciting -- show the world from a teenager's point of view, and no adult author would be able to get it exactly right the way these stories get it exactly right. I've also found that these stories can be wonderful models and inspiration for other teen writers. These are great works of fiction, but they aren't intimidating, they aren't Great Works of Art that have to be read in a quiet, reverent tone.

I can't imagine anything that would more inspire teens to be writers and readers than excellent stories written by people in the midst of adolescence themselves. This book, and all the books of the American Teen Writer series, belong in every school and home library.

Great Story Problems
I bought this book for my 6 year old last school year. He had a great time figuring out the answers to the questions. What an introduction to story problems. Some are quite easy, while others present a challenge. Problems range for figuring out how may legs 10 spiders have, to traveling distances, to how much you would weigh on the moon. We can't wait to start book 2 next year.
