A Good Starting Point
This book serves as a good primer for the Visor. The shame of it is, Handspring should have included something similar with it's product for free!

An excellent addition to your VQSG Library
Jeff Carlson's latest, "Handspring Visor: Visual QuickStart Guide", has proven to be an invaluable resource in my growing VQSG library. I am a convert - no more "dummies" or "morons" for me. The Visual QuickStart series as a whole presents technical material in clear, concise and intelligent fashion, without compromising the integrity of it's material with cartoons or remedial presentation.

Carlson does not fall short of the other respected titles in the Visual QuickStart series. For starters, "Handspring Visor: Visual QuickStart Guide" is very well-organized, making it appealing to those peck and hunt readers, or for those that may use the title as a reference book.

Carlson provides sufficient detail of the Palm OS, but unlike "Palm Organizers: VQSG", the author is able to delve into the idiosynchcrasies of only the Handspring Visor Family. Detailed tips and tricks are far beyond that which is contained in the user guide that comes with your new Visor handheld.

While no reference material can possibly tell you all of the things you can accomplish with your Handspring Visor, Carlson does a superb job of opening your eyes to the path of enlightenment that there's more out there besides your date book, address book, and memo pad. Heck - I'm still reeling that my stylus also has a screw driver and a hidden "tip" to help reset my Visor Deluxe.

Another great title in the Visual Quickstart series
Jeff Carlson does a great job in clear language of explaining the basic operations and synchronization of the Visor handheld. The VQS format is so clear; text on the outside column, graphics on the inside. Oddities like Palm OS 3.1 and 3.5 HotSync manager differences are treated with clarity without being confusing for the non-techie. No other book covers VisorPhone besides its user guide - this is a first. Buy this as the Getting Results guide for your handheld. There is a user guide with your Visor handheld but it tells you all the nitty gritty rather than telling you the useful stuff which Jeff Carlsons book does e.g. how to set up standalone email and what modems you can use. At [money], it is great value too. Bravo!

Magical - a lifetime favorite!
This book takes me back to my own childhood visits to my grandparent's 100 year-old tin-roofed farmhouse along a train route in rural Pennsylvania. Now my 4 year-old son enjoys real-life "Hiawatha Passing" everytime we go to visit his great-grandparents and he gets to sleep in the upstairs bedroom facing the tracks. My son has memorized every word of this book including the postscript. The book is and will always be a family favorite. The story is captivatingly told and the illustrations are beautiful.

Hiawatha Legend
The author mentions that even though this book is recommended for ages 4 to 8, he's had a good response from all ages. For good reason. For adults, the beauty of this charming little book is that it evokes the wonder of that age, both of the little boy, but also the Great Depression when those Hiawatha trains began running. The railroad itself was in bankruptcy, as so many were, but through management and mechanical innovation, these powerful steam streamliners blasted their way into America's consciousness. To little boys, they were that magical machine to everywhere. To adults, they were a powerful symbol of optimism in despairing times. The Milwaukee Road's famous train was the fastest steam powered train service in history. Smaller engines of the same design had been static tested at 169 miles an hour. To children and adults, there was somethng mythological about these great machines; for the kids, it was travel and adventure, and there was nothing more exciting than these trains blasting past at 110 mph. For the adults, it was hope for better times, the thundering message of these amazing Milwaukee Road Hiawathas ... at every Hiawatha Passing.

Wonderful, exciting story.
Such a wonderful story. It really pulls you into it. I had the honour of meeting the authour; he is one of my 6 year old son's teachers. The paintings are perfect for the story. So well written, you are there with the boy watching the train zoom by the house. We read it again and again!!!!!

Employment Advisor Says "Awesome Book"
Too bad its out of print. I recommend this one to all our Business Administration students.

The best book on interview skills for job-hunters out there.
Bad title for a great book. I hate some of those "how-to" tomes on job-hunting or interview skills that are loaded with fill-in charts and graphs. It's like listening to a teacher in front of a blackboard. Jeff writes like a buddy over a beer. He's smart, funny and sounds like the recent undergrad he is. Better than that, his advice is absolutely sound. Clearly, he's been there, done that. Useful for any ambitious college grad starting out on the career quest, this book is particularly useful to seniors or recent grads looking for jobs on Wall Street or consulting.

How to Fight Foreclosure and Win With Honor: California Edition

The most comprehensive book of it's kind to be found.
After reading this book I was not only able to help myself, but have helped a countless number of others. This book is a must read for anyone facing forclosure, or is upsidedown on their mortgage.
Don Viggiano, Rancho Cucamonga, calif.

Best book available on fighting foreclosure
This is the only book I could find that presents all the foreclosure options -- and it is written in a way that is easy to understand. No other book presents so much information in such an easy-to-use format. You can find remedies for your specific situation in minutes. I think it is a must for anyone who is facing foreclosure or for professionals who advise people on how to stop foreclosure and/or lower their mortgage payments.

The best book available on foreclosure
Anyone facing foreclosure will find more than enough information in here to deal with it effectively while maintaining their dignity. The author looks at this subject from practical, legal and emotional viewpoints. They are all accurate and very helpful. The author's compassion for people and this subject is obvious.

A GREAT BOOK
Arvy is terrifed to start the fifth grade. Fifth grade means Mr. Henson's class and Mr. Henson means WRITING. Add to that that Raymond Taylor--the world's worst class bully--is back at school and Arvy is ready to run away and join circus. With the help of his wacky best friend Chloe and the rest of their gang, Arvy manages to get through the first week and conquer his fear of writing. This is such a great book for kids between the ages of 8 and 12. Give it a try. You'll love it.

These first-time authors are in touch with kids! It's real!
This book is based on an issue that is very real for kids -- writing. In a light-hearted yet realistic manner, the authors allow kids to watch the character confront and overcome his aversion to writing. Kids will be drawn in by the dialogue and fun banter, not noticing that there is also a real message here about learning to love expressing oneself through the written word! Great!

Wonderful book for kids on the joys of writing!
Best friends discover the joy of writing in this delightful first novel by Kelly C. McAndrew and Jeff Fluharty. Arvy loves to read but the thought of writing something on his own terrifies him. His best friend Chloe and the members of their secret club Skoob lead him to the discovery that writing isn't so hard if you write what you know. McAndrew and Fluharty have a wonderful gift for getting into the minds and hearts of children, treating them like the intelligent people they are. A great novel for ages 8-11 for any child that loves to read! Also appropriate for school cirriculum.

New to Streaming Media or Interactive TV? Get this book.
I have been a big fan of Jeff's since his DHTML book changed my outlook on web development. After reading this book, you can appreciate the amount of experience that has been distilled in 222 pages. Since many companies have tried to capitalize on streaming media and failed, Jeff outlines what not to do. If you or your organization is thinking of investing in streaming media, buy this book.

The Future is Here
An overview of the future. Good general book for finding out about streaming media and Interactive TV. I liked having the specific code examples mixed in, but some who just want an overview might find it too specific. Book is still great if your ignore the code. If you want specific code examples....there they are!

Great Overview
Book contains lots of great examples of how to use streaming video in web pages. It also gives alot of background information on where streaming video and interactive TV are going. The final chapter is especially forward looking.

A great guide to getting the job
This is an excellent book. The author has done a great job in pulling together the elements which spell success in the quest for employment. I recommend it.

Wayne D. Ford, Ph.D., author of "The Accelerated Job Search" docwifford@msn.com

This is the best book about finding the job you want.
As a senior college student, I was not doing well on all the interviews that I had, untill I read Jeff Allen's Best: Win the job. After I read this book, my first interview turned out to be great and I was offered a job as a computer programmer. I would advice any one out there looking for a job to put this book in his/her bag and read before your interview.

This is one of the best books of the decade on resumes
Dear Fellow Job Hunters

This is probably the best book of the decade on how to write resumes. All other books just explaine how resumes look like but this book takes you on a step by step approch and doesn't show you but tells you.

If you are a first time job hunter I highly recomend it.

If you are a seasoned pro you should still check it out resumes are changing format because of computers and video recording technology.

What I hate about the book is that the sample resumes take on a problem and solutuion approch. Jeff Allen, gives an example resume and then tells you what is wrong with it.

Jeff Allen forgets that no two resume is the same, becasue no two people have the same experiances, talents, abilities and back grounds to give a universal solution to resume problems.

Jeff Burton Untitled

Author: Composite Press
Amazon base price: $40.00
Used price: $35.98
Collectible price: $249.99
Average review score:

Body parts
In ways that are best left to the pictures to prove, Burton is able to take the hyper-surreality of the Los Angeles porn scene and turn it into ruminations on commodification, body worship and culpability. Each image speaks not only to artistic ways of looking, but to critical ways of examination. No book has generated such intense and interesting discussions around my living room as has this one.

Jeff Burton's work is deadpan view of popular culture.
Bright saturated hyperreal colors, the ephemera of rooms, the in-between of bodies are what are distinguishable first in the photos of Jeff Burton. It appears there are some pornographic activities involved, but one sees instead a vague reflection in the polished enamel of a stove, or the carpet between 2 knees, or the pattern of wallpaper in the background. By absence & allusion a series of banal southern Californian interiors become loaded with a mysterious yet rather "pop" sexuality. Glimpses of tanned bodies next to anonymous tables, lamps, doors: the detritus of a film set. These are witty images of a culture in a perpetual contiuum of the present.

Brilliant!! Gorgeous!!
Jeff Burton's photographs capture beauty and color, no matter what the setting. His compositions create shapes with soft and hard lines, that are a joy to view. His use of the human body and inanimate objects is poetic.

Jefferson Davis

Average review score:

excellent, gripping, comprehensive
Jefferson Davis remains a dark, remote Civil War figure, hardly as romantic as Lincoln or as inspiring as Lee.

What William C. Davis has done is to make both the man and the forces that gave him fire and light more immediate and tangible.

Weaving through the myriad controversies and struggles of the pre-Civil War, Civil War and post war years, the author somehow manages to explain endless geographical, political and societal issues without ever losing sight of Davis' central role in them.

A dense but vastly entertaining book that even readers who are not interested in the Civil War would find fascinating.

Fascinating version of Jeff Davis and the Confederacy.
Really enjoyed listening to this book, especially the themes in which Jeff Davis' strengths and flaws were carry on throughout his entire adult life. The last few tapes are outstanding on how the confederacy got reduced to a well guarded 3 mile wagon train.

superb work by a master historical author.
William C. Davis has written THE biography of Jefferson Davis. The book not only reads as easily as a novel, it also has been meticulously researched. Keep your eye on this Davis. He is fast becoming one of America's best popular historian.

Legendary Texas

Author: Jeff Carroll
Amazon base price: $22.95

Texas History, With a Twist
Jeff Carroll has a unique way of presenting the history of Texas...from the perspective of the courageous people that settled this great land. While you won't find many of his stories in traditional Texas History text books, they are nonetheless, just as important. In fact, I will go as far as to say that these stories and accounts are more important because they bring the history of Texas to a personal level - they bring it to life!

The stories are fun to read and very educational. I've read all of the 'Legendary Texas' volumes at least twice and will enjoy reading them again! I highly recommend these books for anyone that enjoys a good story and especially those who enjoy Texas History.

Great Educational Fun
Contains easy-to-read stories of Texas Heritage. Makes historical understanding fun. I never tired of Mr. Carroll's vivid and unique storytelling. A must for anyone who is usually bored with history and for the historically-inclined.

A feast on Texana little known stories in delicious bites!
As a Texana historian I scour book shelves to find the "New Book" with stories of Real people. This author has indeed done his research with a zesty writing style that will leave you waiting for the next story. This is a "Must read" if you like the West.
