Dragon's Fury - High Tide (Vol. III)
Published in Paperback by Alpha Connections (2003)
Authors: Jeff Head, Chris Durkin, and Joanie Fischer
Amazon base price: $19.99
Average review score:

Dragon¿s Fury, High Tide, Volume III
In Volume III of the Dragon's Fury series, Mr. Head continues his saga of World War III covering air, naval, and land engagements on all seven continents and oceans. Most frighteningly, his story illustrates the realistic and probable levels of conventional warfare in a world war within the next few years, requiring only slight advances in technology and the continuation of current political and economic trends.

High Tide is much more than a story of military adventure. It is a story of our nation's commitment to survival and freedom. It is a continuous lesson in geography, technology, economics, politics, patriotism, sacrifice, and above all, faith. It is a wake-up call to America's people and politicians. And although future alliances will take different shapes on the world stage, I believe some form of this scenario is inevitable.

Mr. Head pursues an optimistic path in his determination that the people of America can pull together in their efforts to fight back after a devastating series of military defeats and terrorist attacks. Whether his optimism is justified, we will know in a few years.

Jeff Head Has Another Winner!
Jeff Head's third book in the "Dragon's Fury" series lives up to the drama and political intrigue of his first two novels. This is a book that you can't put down. The intense action may make you angry, it may make you sweat, it may make you anxious, and it may make you want to write your Congressman and tell them they have to read this book. I felt all of these emotions as I read this book. Jeff tells his story with so many sub-plots, yet they each come together to tie this masterpiece into a work of art. It is a story of personal courage, strength, and commitment to the ideals that make this country great. You must read this book and send copies to as many people as possible. It is not just a great book, it is a wake-up call for America. I'm already eagerly waiting for Volume IV!

Dragon's Fury. . . just keeps getting better!
Head has long since introduced his characters and situation, and now puts us at the "darkest hour" and the turning point of his all-too-believable World War Three scenario. A Note: this book will NOT appeal to those of a decidedly liberal persuasion, but considering the overwhelmingly conservative readership of technothrillers, it doesn't handicap the book at all. Head has some strong beliefs about America, Politics, and many other issues, and is unafraid to take a stand.

As an additional side note, one of the more fun aspects of this series of books is matching the characters in the books to their real-life counterparts. The President of the US is rather obvious, yet still a surprise.

Is Jeff Head the next Tom Clancy ? I can't say. . .yet, but also can't wait for Volume IV. . . .

Shows to how to bring your best game to the court!
I've done a lot of sports in my life, and have only rarely been given any guidance by coaches about how to address the issue of nerves, tension, relaxation, focus, and playing my best physical game while my mental side was going crazy with the tension of the moment. It's no easy task, but Jeff Greenwald's "Fearless Tennis" finally tackles a subject that affects all of us who play the game, any game for that matter. Relaxing and hitting our best stuff under the pressure of a match, at any level, has always been elusive at best. It's obvious when your hear this CD, that Jeff has "been there". His professional experience on the tour gives credence to his insights on how the pressure of a match can undermine so devastatingly our ability to hit the ball like we do when it doesn't count. I think Jeff has done us all a great service by combining his extensive match experience, knowledge of the game, and advanced psychological training to produce this CD. I feel like Jeff has lifted a real load of mental anguish off my shoulders every time I walk on a court. I'm playing more relaxed, hitting out more on the pressure points, and am making fewer errors. I have mixed emotions about letting everybody know about this great CD.
It's helped me immensely , I'm just not sure I want my opponents to know this stuff too!

Helps Players Get Out of their Own Way to Improve
Jeff has done an outstanding job in blending his own success on the court with practical strategies we can all use to get out of our own way in competition and succeed on the court.

Mental Toughness is a Top Priority
"Fearless Tennis" is an excellent tool for ensuring stroke and tactical skills are implimented during match play. The lesson plan is easy to follow and understand. The audio format allows me to listen with eyes closed and really hear what's being said.

Jeff's coaching points are clear and concise and his advise has helped me on and off the court. I picked up several great ideas that I plan to use regularly. If you're looking for the power to use what you know when you need it most- you can't go wrong with "Fearless Tennis".

The Title Says It All
The baseball stories that make up this book make it possible to call this book the the Greatest Baseball Stories Ever Told. These stories have appeared in years past in the three Fireside books of baseball that are currently out of print. Since they are no longer available it would be advisable for you to strike while the iron is hot and buy this book. The book contains both fiction and non-fiction and certainly doesn't cover all the great stories that the Fireside books contain, but you can't argue with the thirty that make up this book. I would especially recommend this book for youngsters interested in baseball literature who weren't around to enjoy the Fireside books.

An instant Hall of Famer
This is an absolutely super collection of baseball stories. There's alot of familiar stuff in here -- how could it be called the "Greatest" without John Updike's story on Ted Williams or Gay Taleses's on Joe DiMaggio -- but where the book really steps to the plate is in its surprises: like the fiction by Zane Grey and P.G. Wodehouse, whom I associate with other arenas, and tremendous non-fiction from Al Stump (on Ty Cobb), Bill Barich (on Russian barnstormers), and a completely unexpected Red Smith (on Morganna the Kissing Bandit and Johnny Bench.) This is a book aimed right for the baseball fan's heart. It certainly pierced mine.

Great writing about a great sport
There are those who prefer football or basketball, but I'll take baseball. It has a pace that some may find slow, but I think of as more leisurely, allowing suspense to build slowly and often leaving the conclusion unknown until the final out. If you're down twenty points in football with a minute left, there's no way you're going to win; if you're down three runs (a similar three scores as in the football example), there is at least still a chance.

The dramatic twists of fate in baseball are only part of makes the sport great. There is also the rich history and the colorful characters. And unlike almost any other team sport, baseball lends itself well to the narrative structure; when you read about a baseball game, you can picture exactly what happened. An entire game could be described on paper and you can see it all in your mind; try this with a basketball game and you'll be disappointed.

Thus this book. Take some of the great writers (in sports or otherwise), give them the best sport to write about, and you can't go wrong, and this one doesn't. As an anthology, not every story is equally fantastic, but they are all good. They serve as a reminder of what makes baseball great: its drama, its history and its character.

Awesome book!
I really love this book. I've been trying to live a drug free life, but the stress and pressures I feel sometimes make me think that it would be easier if I just started drinking beer and smoking weed like everyone else does. But after reading this book and incorporating some of the exercises into my life, I've found it easier to stay away from drugs. This guy has a great sense of humor and really seems to understand kids. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a way to releive stress without using drugs. Thanks, Alex. You rock!

New to Wi-Fi? 802.11 hobbyist? This is the book for you!
I was given this book as a gift of appreciation for contributing news items to Netstumbler.com. I highly recommend this book for beginners interested in further understanding their home network or extending its range and having fun with Wi-Fi.

The first part of the book is an introduction to Wi-Fi and its applications. The second part of the book shows you how to hook up a network in your home. The third part covers the theoretical and practical details of security. The fourth part deals with extending the range of your laptop and some of the secrets behind wardriving.

I liked the tin can bandwidth extender project section. It's just what you need in order to fire that over-priced cable or DSL connection and get your broadband service from one of the thousands of nearby Starbucks. The wardriving section shows you how to find access points from your car.

This is the book
This is a great book and it's clear the person writing wrote it because they love Wi-Fi and what it represents. Wi-Fi can be two things, it can be just another networking tech, or it can a lot more. It can be something to tinker with, a technology to burrow into and learn a lot more about, and it creates all sorts of new cool things you can do. Duntemann clearly sees it as the latter, a technology that opens up entire new worlds and geeky fun things to do. This book covers how to wardrive, how to build your own antennas, and more. At the same time he doesn't skimp on the 101 stuff either, taking the time to explain everything to even a n00b like myself.

If you're a net admin trying to learn more get this book.

If you're a power-user who wants to get the most out of Wi-Fi get this book.

If you're into Wi-Fi and know lots of stuff you should still get this book.

What more can I say? This book is for the beginner and for the master.

Also I've looked at the other books out there. A couple of them are pretty good too, but unlike some of them the fact that Duntemann is truly into this tech and not just writing about it shows through more than most of the others.

This book is awesome for all wi-fi users
I just recently came across this book because a friend suggested I get it. I've been using wi-fi for a little over a year now and I bought a number if the books that were published over the past year--big disapointment there. I was super gald to find this book because most of the other books were very academic and didn't really offer much.

What I like about this book is that it is very hands-on. And man this author can really write. This is one of the best technical books I have ever read. If I were a tech writer I'd really want to take lessons from this author.

The best part about the book is the hands-on projects and the chapter on War Driving. The Wi-fi reception in my house (I live in an older house) isn't great so I've been messing around with some of the projects in the book to improve my reception. The discussion of attennas is really first rate. I wish that I had more technical books that were written this well.

Mark's all time Favorite
This book is wonderful. It is my 20 month old son's favorite book from the moment he saw it the first time. I wish there were more of these Seasame Song books. The illustration is beautiful (I don't care what the paid review says!). Anyone who enjoys singing and/or reading with their child will love this book. Now when my son sees the song being song on Seasame Street he runs to his cabinet and pulls out the book. Its the first book he gets out in the morning and I have to make him leave it down stairs on his way to bed.

Great bedtime book
My son and husband loved this song from Sesame Street so I was so excited they had a book of it. The illustrations are beautiful and my one year old loves the funny pictures of Ernie. We sing the song as a lullabye and it works like a charm!

One of those not-so-babyish Sesame Street songs
"I Don't Want to Live on The Moon" has been one of my mother's favorite songs. The song is mostly in Sesame Street episodes about space, but the main theme of this soothing song is really about having wishes rather than about going to the moon. It tells how when one has wishes, it is hard to decide whether or not he or she really wants them to come true because of the changes that might happen if they did. I sing the song when I think of my wishes and at nighttime when I see the moon. They really ought to make more books of those not-so-babyish Sesame Street songs such as, "We are all Earthlings". Buy this book for somebody who's always got wishes on their mind about which they have tough decisions.

One Of My Favorites
My aunt bought me this book for Christmas when I was about three or four, back in the late 70's when it was new. I loved it. It was my favorite book. My mom used to read it to me over and over again. I still have it, even though saddly the original cover is no longer with it. And I will never get rid of it. To this day I still every once in a while pull it off the shelf and read it, remembering those nights long ago when my mom was reading it to me. This is a great book, and if you can find a copy of it somewhere, I would highly recomend picking it up.

A book I loved to death
This was my favorite book when I was little. My father read it to me over and over again until I had it memorized! The repetition is wonderful for young readers; even if your children can't read, Jeffers' illustrations are enough to make anyone a little sleepier. I still dream of ending up in the treehouse at the end of the book. It's a pity Close Your Eyes is no longer in print.

My All-Time Favorite Bedtime Book
Over the years of reading books to my children, Close Your Eyes became both my favorite and my daughter's. The lyrical story is told on two levels, perfectly complimented by the illustrations. As a father, I identify with the dad in the story. My daughter is in college now, but we occasionally recite the story to eachother in our correspondence, and still treasure the countless bedtimes that we read this book together. It is, indeed, the perfect gift for new parents.

Neil Gaiman it's not...
Well, I suppose that if every comic writer were going to be criticized for not being Neil Gaiman I'd have a very long night ahead of me indeed. But still, the fact that these are almost all characters that he created make the comparisons more obvious. While Ms. Kiernan does a workable job with the storylines and characters left hanging at the end of "The Wake," she just doesn't have the flair that Gaiman did. The biggest annoyance for me was that where Gaiman would hint at a million literary, mythological and pop culture references to be discovered like treasures on the third or fourth reading in his comics, with Kiernan the ones that aren't immediately obvious (which are most of them) are nearly always explained within the story. But for anyone who may have found Gaiman's writing too dense or obscure, they may prefer her method. I personally don't. Still, it was nice to have something left of the Dreaming, even if it's more like the Dreaming Lite.

I didn't expect it to be this good . . .
but it is. It's really, really good. No, not as good as Neil Gaiman, but you couldn't have expected that. It's excellent, though. It's also a huge improvement on the first "Dreaming" anthology, Beyond The Shores of Night. Caitlin Kiernan (who wrote two story arcs in this collection made up of 3 issues each) is a worthy successor to the Sandman universe--which is not an easy thing to be--and Peter Hogan (who wrote two short stories) is close.

I shall now discuss each story. The first is "Day's Work, Night's Rest" by someone whose name I don't remember. I didn't really like this one. It started out trying to be serious (as far as I can tell), but ended up with a sort of black comedy that didn't work. And the art was really ugly. Next!

"Ice" by Peter Hogan. Ah, much better. This is the one where the story of Cluracan and his nemesis is resolved. We also get to see Nuala working as a barmaid in New York; she gets a visit from Lucien. I very much enjoyed Hogan's characterization of the Cluracan, and the art is superior.

Next is a 3-part story arc by Caitlin R. Kiernan, called "Souvenirs". It's about the Corinthian, a character I have always found fascinating. And this story is fantastic. I honestly think it ranks up with some parts of Sandman; perhaps "Collectors", only more disturbing. (Yes, more disturbing than "Collectors". This story is not for the faint of heart.) Caitlin Kiernan has a lovely and unique style. She invents words ("cricketwhisper") and makes extensive use of the word "and" to join together phrases and thoughts you wouldn't normally join together, creating startling, unconventional-sounding prose which somehow captures the mood perfectly.

Then there's another Kiernan story arc: An Unkindness of One. I didn't like this one as much, but it was still pretty cool. It's about Matthew becoming a man again temporarily, as Lucien becomes a raven again temporarily. I didn't get some of what was going on, but I think I'd have enjoyed it a lot more if I kept up with "Swamp Thing". Kiernan's prose still shines. Something to note: The f-word is probably used ten times as much in this one book than it was during the entire run of Sandman. :)

Lastly, another Peter Hogan story: My Year As A Man. This concerns Dream's raven Aristeas of Marmora (remember, "the one who came back after he was a man again"). As you may have figured out from the title, Aristeas spends a year as a man, then goes back to being a raven. It's a moderately good story, but Peter Hogan really won me over by putting Thessaly in it--quite a bit younger, and now calling herself Hypata, but still Thessaly. I was thrilled to see her again.

This collection far surpassed my expectations--particularly "Souvenirs". If you were devastated when you had no more Sandman to read, definitely check this out!

A superb comic!
Since Caitlin Kiernan took over The Dreaming it's been almost as good as The Sandman, as this collection will demonstrate. She's definitely one of the best writers at Vertigo today.

How we live now
Jeff Fischer's stories draw you in to intimate scenes of family, friends and love -- a young man, Mike Gallo, with his parents, brothers, and women. You are instantly and deeply present at the Gallo table, Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris, or the corner of a street in Ljubljana, where, true to life, things are not quite as they seem nor perhaps going to work out quite right. These are self-contained short stories, but collectively they paint a picture of Mike's world that leads inexorably to the crisis of the last story. Compelling, clear, and vast in the geographies both of the world and the human heart, Jeff Fischer's "In Our Time" captures a young man's time fully and memorably.

A thinking reader's book
Jeff Fischer's writings in this book force the reader to look
under the surface for the deeper realities of the
the stories. In several stories, the true subject of
the tale is not even mentioned- Mr. Fischer leaves it up
to the reader to work out what is being said but not
spoken about - a kind of literary cavo rilievo.

Like Brahms' intermezzos or Chopin's nocturnes, each
piece stands on its own, but when experienced all together,
they work to create larger, more comprehensive feeling. Most
of the stories follow the life of Mike Gallo and his family,
friends, and loves, starting from boyhood and continuing on into
his early adult life. An altogether enjoyable read,
with wonderful descriptions throughout. I look forward to
Mr. Fischer's next book!

In our Time - a treasury of feelings
As I started reading this book, I found the first story to leave me hanging and I wondered if I would truly enjoy the stories. But I liked the descriptions and the readability of the story so I continued on. Each story got me more and more into the book until I was reading it into the nighttime, wanting to finish each story. I also felt that I needed to not read them all at one time because I needed the time to ponder over the stories. They are all such unique stories, written in a way that you can see and feel the beauty of the surroundings, and the love, anxiety, loss, grief, and happiness of the characters. There were times when my heart was actually pounding and I wanted to be in absolute quiet so I could just let the feelings the stories produced in me flow thru me. There were times I wanted to quickly and quietly turn the page to see what was going to happen, as I was holding my breath wondering what would happen next. After reading the first story, I knew that in some of the stories, I would not know how it ended. That is the true difference of these stories. Some have a definite ending, but some just linger on in your mine and you put your own lifetime experiences into the story and come up with an ending, be it that day or perhaps days later as you rethink what it had to say. I hope this author writes more. I will look forward to his writing. This was a very different and almost haunting experience. The crystal clear pictures of nature had me walking the beaches, seeing wonderful scenes, but also feeling the emotions of human beings with deep convictions and caring. Very well done!

A well written book
I have been looking for a good book on MPLS. This book covers Frame-mode VPNs in great detail. I have read this book repeatedly and have absorbed a great deal on Frame based MPLS VPNs. The examples presented are succinct and to the point.

The discussion on Internet connectivity to MPLS VPNs is also presented very well. I would encourage the authors to discuss hybrid IPsec and MPLS VPNs and ATM VPNs in the next edition.

All in all, a well written book.

What a geat book!
Ivan and Jim did a splendid job. I haven't read such a well-written book in a long time. It is perfect for not only the people who are looking for a thorough understanding of MPLS, but also the begginers who know nothing about it. All the concepts are explained in great detail, and the language is so smooth, it makes the reading an enjoyment. Since the book is mainly focused on MPLS, you will need a good understanding of how BGP works before start reading this book (such as BGP synchronization and how to get aroung it). I am sure you will like this book.

Excellent Book
I found this book as an excellent reference for VPN Classes and Architectures and MPLS based VPNS. It is very well written and very easy to follow...
