Deviance and Medicalization: From Badness to Sickness
I read this book for a course on the sociology of deviance, andfound it a valuable resource. It traces the historical developement of deviant 'sicknesses' such as opiate addictions, mental illness, homosexuality, and attention deficit disorder. The book examines how these forms of deviance were understood historically, and how they came they came to be understood as forms of 'sickness.' Conrad and Schneider examine medical model of understanding deviance, which is currently standard, from a removed and critical perspective. In the forward (of my edition) Joseph Gusfield puts it thusly, "They treat the medical model as something strange, not as something that is 'taken for granted' as 'normal.' When a body a body of thought or phenomemon is taken as problematic, as something to be explained, its naturalness, its claim to 'reality,' is called to account." This book does an excellent job at calling the claims of the medical model into account. This book offers new perspectives on hot-topics, is well organized, and is extremely well-researched. I would warn people that it is dense reading, and some people may find it hard to get through. I would especially recommend this book to any who would form a stance on any of the following issues: drug use/abuse, mental illness, juvenile delinquency, homosexuality, and medicine as a means of social control.

Informative and provolking
Atkin's analysis of the integration of physical chemistry and biology I believe made a much better model for future biophysics. The text is an informative resource for one, and also an excellent educational tool. Also, its implications are almost frightening in their scope and degree. This was an excellent book, indeed. It is still an excellent text, and probably will be a worthwhile read for many years to come.

Reviewing Extra Virgin w/ Clare Ferguson
Great book, I loved it. Great illustrations. Great simple recipes that work, for example Tapenade and Grilled Scallops on skewers. A must have cookbook for any one who loves to cook and loves to use to good extra-virgin olive oil. The cookbook also has a very good introduction to extra-virgin olive oil and how it is made.

Arrange Your *Eye* Examination Soon
Storm Thorgerson is best known, of course, as the premiere album art designer with a 30-year association with Pink Floyd. If you became fond of his work because you're a PF fan, you don't want to miss this book just because Floyd art isn't the primary focus this time around. Storm's writing in Mind Over Matter was very entertaining, but in Eye of the Storm he's assumed an even more relaxed, personally revealing style. His character comes through more clearly, and he's a very engaging character indeed!
Among the book's features is an art concept that was originally intended for a Hey You 1994 concert video. He confesses that the Tree of Half Life concept didn't begin as Pink Floyd art. It tells more than his previous books about his talented associates, for example Keith Breeden (who is unfortunately now retired from the business).
The book is compelling entertainment, and it fills a gap for some of us who missed seeing his intriguing work for less famous bands than Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. My favorite at the moment is the Catherine Wheel art he selected for this book's cover.

Excellent introduction to feeding difficulties
I just finished reading this book, and found it very informative and clearly written. The book begins with the less complex and leads to the very complex in a smooth, precise manner. Recently beginning work in a facility that deals with a clientel prodominately afflicted with CP, I found this book to contain and explain the vital information that I need to do my job as a well-informed dietetic technician. I highly recommend this book to parents and caregivers of the feeding disabled child.
