An Outstanding Traveling Novel
Pedro's Journal by Pam Conrad is a heartwarming story about trust. Pam really brought out the characters by using lot's of detail.

Pedro is a boy who went sailing with Christopher Columbus. He's the only person on the ship who knew how to read and write.

Pam kept you reading by her creative chapter endings. She changed font and size when writing about what the characters were saying and thinking.

Anyone who reads this book will say it's hard to put down. Don't miss this good chance to read this outstanding book.

Pedro's Journal for 5th grade Class
Pedro's Journal was read by my 5th grade classes to learn more about Christopher Columbus and his journey. It was perfect for a class of mixed ability readers, it's history was well researched, and it engaged the students. We used it for a Literary Circle book. I highly recommend it for Social Studies, Language Arts, or an example of journal writing.

Bringing Columbus' voyage to life for students
I read selections of this book out loud to my fifth grade Hispanic students who were intrigued with the young sailor and his experiences. It lent a "you were there" aspect to the study of history and it provided a model of diary style writing. This book was recommended by our history series.

For everyone who has a bear
I bought this book for our own bear, last Christmas. He never has insomnia, but was as delighted as his owners were to read this enchanting story, enjoying the dreamlike prose and illutrations. This book isn't just for children. It's for the child inside all of us, so that we never forget the magic and innocence of being young, and more importantly, that we never forget the importance of bears. Remember - look after you bear, whether you're 2 or 92.

An excellent bedtime story!
The comments from the Vermont reader match my feelings about Sleep Well, Little Bear exactly. The prose IS gentle, descriptive, and wonderful. The artwork, however, is so truly beautiful. I especially appreciated Buchholz's use of light. The text and the soft, easy, lovingly detailed pictures makes it a very lulling read. I'm keeping this for my (very) future grandchildren.

Fabulous picture book
This is an truly lovable book. A little bear, in typical little boy style, can't quite get to sleep so he reviews his day of being a pirate on the river that flows past his house, and helping old Mrs Rose with her garden, and other wonders of a child's (and bear's) life. The prose is sweet and gentle and clever and lovely, but what really makes this book is the artwork--surreal, truly beautiful pictures of the circus clown playing his violin to put a baby elephant to sleep, and the little bear peering out his bedroom window at the moon, and the night musicians wandering through the meadow, and the deer in the mist. Buy it for yourself, lend it to your kids.

Working With AIDS Bereavement: A Comprehensive Approach for Mental Health Providers (Ucsf AIDS Health Project Monograph Series, No. 3)
Published in Paperback by AIDS Health Project (1999)
Authors: Peter Goldblum and Sarah Erickson
Amazon base price: $10.95
Average review score:

Dr. S.C.W. Mead
This is the most comprehensive review of AIDS Bereavement that I have read in years. It does not only apply to American clinicians but also to European Clinicians who are dealing with AIDS bereavement. It is scientifically and sensitively written. As a reader, one can tell that the authors have spent many years working in the field of AIDS bereavement. I would not only reccomend this book for persons working in the field of AIDS but for all persons working in the area of Bereavement.

Surprisingly Interesting and involving
Peter Goldblum and Sarah Erickson have produced a useful and surprisingly emotionally-involving little book about AIDS bereavement and bereavement in general. The book is obviously a professional text; you can see how a clinician would be especially interested in its very practical and specific instructions for dealing with grief in a therapeutic setting. But it's also interesting to the lay reader -- or the personally involved reader who is dealing with his or her own grief. The book is wonderfully clear about what to expect in the grieving process. The final case study is moving and human. Good book!

This is a great little book ...
This is a great little book packed with helpful information about working with AIDS-related bereavement issues. While this book is geared towards clinicians, anyone who has lost someone to AIDS or would like to be of emotional support to someone who has lost someone to AIDS will find this book helpful. The authors do a nice job describing the psychosocial factors impacting HIV-related grief and loss issues and develop an integrative therapy model to address these issues in treatment. The book has a distinctly "practical" tone in the best sense of the word, giving the practicing clinician a clear set of ideas and concepts to work with. One of the highlights of the book is the lengthy case example presented in the last chapter which really shows how to bring the therapy model described in this book to bear on a challenging case. Well worth read for anyone interested in this topic.

All the Way With JFK? Britain, the US and the Vietnam War
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (2003)
Author: Peter Busch
Amazon base price: $45.00
Average review score:

Superb account of British support for US aggression
In this brilliantly-researched study, Peter Busch examines the Conservative government's policy towards the US war against Vietnam for the years 1961 to 1963. The author, who formerly worked at the Public Record Office at Kew, has thoroughly mined newly available records from Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Germany. He also shows how British policy towards Vietnam related to wider policy towards South-East Asia, especially towards Indonesia. In both cases, Prime Minister Harold Macmillan ruled out negotiated settlements and preferred to use force.

Busch shows how Macmillan fully backed President Kennedy's aggressive military build-up in Vietnam, 'a clear breach' of the Geneva agreements, while advising him to conceal it. Macmillan pretended to be a peacemaker, while actually supporting the US war. He aimed to keep Britain's 'great power' status and prove its value as a US ally.

As co-chairman of the International Control Commission set up by the 1954 Geneva Conference, the British state abused its role in order to support the illegal, dictatorial Diem regime in the south. It backed up Diem's unwarranted claims that the Democratic Republic of Vietnam was responsible, 'whether there was evidence or not', for starting the civil war in the south. It used these claims to rule out the DRV's call for reconvening the Conference to negotiate the peaceful reunification of Vietnam.

Macmillan helped the US counter-insurgency effort, setting up the British Advisory Mission in 1961. British forces also trained Diem's troops in Malaysia. In 1962, the British Ambassador to Saigon urged the USA to 'crush and eradicate the Viet Cong'.

The British government only dropped Diem when it discovered that his brother, Ngo Dinh Nhu, was willing to discuss peace with the DRV. It then backed the US coup against Diem that sabotaged the chances of peacefully reunifying Vietnam.

Busch concludes that the British government did not pursue peace. "Britain supported the American policy in Vietnam wholeheartedly. The British only wanted to 'sell' this policy in a different, less confrontational way." Plus ca change! This superb book vindicates all those who opposed the US aggression against Vietnam.

Very informative and original
This book is an excellent addition to the literature on the Vietnam war, providing us with a new perspective. It is full of novel information but still easy to read, which is quite an achievement. It is particularly interesting -- given the current political situation -- to learn how eager the British government was to support Kennedy's Vietnam policy. This is a real revelation.
The book's approach is truly international, and the research is more than impressive. Among the archives the author used are the national archive of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, and of course Britain.

Good gift for a new cook...or old cook..
I used to cook a lot, but got away from it for many years -- eating out in restaurants while I pursued a career. I read an article about Anne Willan in our local paper, and had to try one of her books. I'm not ready to make the fancy French dishes (although I would like to eat them) so I decided to buy a simple book and practice the basics again.

Ms. Willan explains many basic recipes in this volume. This is a nice cook book to give a new cook, or it might be a housewarming or bridal gift. I gave it to myself. I especially like the photos that show how things should look. There are photos of how things shouldn't look too, with explanations about why you got the results you did. I recommend this book if you're beginning for the first time, or beginning again.

cooking school in a book
This book is unique in that the pictures show different states of properly cooked, under or over cooked foods. Also gives tips how to salvage any mistakes that have been made. I have been cooking for years, and learned alot just from flipping through the pages.

Allan Arbus Was There
I have not seen or read this book, but hopefully it mentions Allan Arbus, the husband of Diane Arbus, because he served in the American army as a photographer during World War Two.

A remarkable work of history.
Maslowski, in this book, has turned the journalist's eye back on itself, with remarkable results. He's brought the photojournalists of the Second World War to life with humor, affection, and detail - it's a story that's interesting, well-written, and well worth looking into.

Sex, Peas, and Politics
An advertisement for Troubled Titan Peas hits us with the lines,"How Much Time Do You Have? YOU NEVER KNOW! In these TROUBLED TIMES, when it could be 'here today, gone tomorrow,' you need WHOLESOME food that you can 'heat 'n eat'! You need QUALITY...IN A JIFF!..." And then advertises bomb shelters. Nevertheless, the peas in this book are a gateway to a pubescent sexual fantasy come true. Kraft takes on all of the best parts of growing up in Babbington, NY (or any part of America in the late 50's) with this novel. It's smart, humorous, and as engaging a book as I've ever read.

Two fingers-on-peas up for Eric Kraft
Jump into the world of Peter Leroy. Kraft uses Peter Leroy to meditate beautifully on memory, imagination, longing, and loss while he spins a quirky and poignant tale which makes you wish you could remember every word, you wish you could create like Kraft, you long to spend more time with Peter and his friends, and mourn the loss of their company when the book ends. Read this book because you'll want to find out what the Glynns have Peter do with the peas.

A Wonderful Book
Fritz Peter's remarkable account of his experience with Gurdjieff is a genuine classic. Straightforward, perceptive, and filledwith numerous "scenes" that illuminate his unique experience with one of the great figures ofour time, I highly recommend thisbook not only to anyone interested in Gurdjieffs teachings, but anyone interested in a fascinating tale

A Great Read
A wonderful account of Peter's stay in Gurdjieff's commune when he was 11 years old. He brings Gurdjieff to life and makes Gurdjieff's work available and understandable. His child's eye view of the experiment makes it all the more compelling... I loved this book and recommend it highly.

A remarkable and invaluable book
A remarkable and invaluable trialogue between three of the most remarkable minds of our times.

An invaluable contribution towards the development of a species that wants to survive in a peaceful coexistence with all of nature.

Should get back in print as soon as possible.

Come on over for dinner!
For several years now I have been reading these three great men. They have been trying to explain it as I have been trying to understand. I now understand. I understand that we have to listen to these geniuses' Genesis to a new way of consciousness.

This is a dialogue between three spirits. Inter-resting that it is dialogue, in the true sense, but between three. And so it spreads.

I am only a simple mother waiting to be a grandmother but I can COOK! You bring great food for thought and new recipies for the family of man.

Peter Russell has a new book out available at his site...go there...I did and plan to read it. I consider all these men as Great Chefs and I am following instructions to the Cook.
