Peter does Databases and VB OO programming
He non-chalantly covers what has been a very stick y subject.

His style is friendly ... a little wordy.

But when he puts nuts and bolts together .. the guy has quite a philosophy ...

I've been a VB programmer since v3. VB3 and VB4 didn't do objects .. so I went to Java.

Even though I am familiar with OO programming ... he was NOT boring ... and spelled things out simple stupid 123.

If you are Einstein or Forest Gump .. .you will get something out of this book .. if you do what he says .. and punch the keyboard through his examples.

He should (but probably won't) .. get a commission on my next programming project !!

I found it quite easy the way it's laid out.
Being an experienced VB programmer, I like the way Peter laid out the way he explained it all. Before reading this book, I really didn't have much understanding of objects/classes....just that they were there and it had some code I could use elsewhere in my project. When I actually had a chance to work on it, I just felt so knowledgeable!!

One thing I thought was interesting.....most of the time when there is source code with the book, the examples are fully coded and functional. He tricked me this time and had a project with many classes and no code. (BTW, I downloaded it from the Wrox site). He leaves this open for you to work on it and get it right. I think that's the best way to learn.

Good Job Peter!!!

Peter Wright does it again...This time with Objects
Beginning Visual Basic 5.0 by Peter Wright was the first book on Visual Basic that I read. Peter Wright's easy to follow style and use of understandable real world examples made my transition from ACCESS database development to Visual Basic development a breeze. Recently I began to explore the world of Objects. I found that most of the texts used abstract, hard to follow language. Once again Peter Wright has produced a book that offers great coverage of the basics of his topic. Since reading this book, I have been able to go back to the other more advanced texts with no trouble. Well done Mr. Wright.

Excellent Book!
I have read many books on EMT's and paramedics and enjoyed this one very much! Peter Telep makes you feel like you are there.
I highly recommend this!

great book
this was a great book i couldnt put it down need to write more than 3 do more

TELEP DOES IT AGAIN!
In this second book, Telep captures the essence of how life on the job can cross, destroy and change lives outside of the job. It is a given that firefighters/paramedics are true heroes--but "civilians" truly do not understand how there personal lives are affected by their jobs -- alcoholism, divorce, tragedy -- it runs rampant for folks in this profession.

Thanks for helping people to understand that sometimes you just can't "turn off the job" when you leave the station. It carries with you whether you want it to or not.

enthusiastic fun
What's great here, in addition to stellar photos and high production values (what kind of paper is this?) is the surprising quality of the selection of the people. I like seeing boxers and map makers, basketball players and glass blowers set next to each other.

To surpass oneself is among life's greatest rewards
Wayne Gretzky's retirement from hockey seems a fitting occasion to remark on the phenomenal collection of virtuosos Ken Carbone has gathered together in his new book. The gift of a Virtuoso like Gretzky, and of this book, is the realization that absolute focus and dedication to a passion can lead one beyond oneself. That message resounds like a gong through the handsomely designed pages and expressive photographs of The Virtuoso. The thrill of sharing a Virtuoso's talent is the transcendence it offers, the visceral feeling that one is witnessing, in the Eastern sense, life lived fully in the moment. Inspiration, indeed.

Buy this book for everyone you care about
Joseph Campbell's sadly over-used expression "Follow your bliss" is personified in the 40 profiles that fill the pages of The Virtuoso. What a revelation to find that the world possesses such remarkable individuals in places we might least expect to find them. The Virtuoso says much about taking risks, about going as far as you can to arrive at a place that is larger than yourself. Love, and a dash of madness, are at the core of every choice a Virtuoso makes, shaping the lives of these extraordinary talents in the most unimagined ways, and those who come into contact with them. It takes a vision to see the vision in others. Clearly this author has that. Bravo!

the best way to learn about yourself.
If you dont know how to answer your kids questions then you need this book. My mom gave it to us at an age that we already knew, but it gave a new look at how we got here and we passed it on to the rest of the kids in the family. Now I need one for my own children. I strongly suggest this book if your children, whom you think are too young, are asking questions and you cant or dont know how to answer.

The best book for teaching children about the facts of life
My mother gave me this book when I was young and now I bought it for my daughter. She is 8 years old and has already read it many times. She has asked honest, intelligent questions about reproduction and we have had many wonderful and informative discussions about the subject. This book is a wonderful tool for any parent. I recommend it highly.

This book is great!!
My parents gave me this book as soon as I learned to read, and it was an amazing tool. Thanks to it, I never believed any of the lies and speculations that went on in elementary school, and I was never tempted to experiment sexually, because I saw making love as a tool to achieve reproduction. (Naturally, my parents explained the rest as I got older!) I recommend this to any parent who is nervous about how to approach the "birds and bees" with their children!

Winnie-The-Pooh & When We Were Very Young with Book

Spellbound, not only the children, but the adults as well...
Initially we purchased the"Winnie-The-Pooh and When we were very Young " cassettes for the children to listen to on long car journeys; I vaguely remembered the stories from my own childhood in England and it was a delight to find that the extremely talented Peter Dennis has a wonderful English voice (call me biased but Winnie-The-Pooh is a very British bear!). Peter Dennis totally captures the characters and nuances of A.A. Milne's delightful creatures; we may have bought the tapes for the children but the adults share equal pleasure when listening to them. To anyone who wants to journey back to a time of simple pleasures and pure enchantment I thoroughly recommend "Winnie-The-Pooh and When We Were Very Young" performed by Peter Dennis.

Dennis is dynamite!
BRAVO! Rush out and buy all Mr. Dennis' recordings

Peter Dennis is charming and witty!
Mr. Dennis has a exemplary way of charming young and old alike with his renderings of the works of A.A. Milne. No wonder the U.S. Government considers him a national treasure. Anyone will treasure owning his entire collection.

the BEST parenting book out there!!!
This book is my parenting BIBLE!! I can't say enough good things about it--each and every chapter is INVALUABLE. I am so glad I found something that can help me figure out how to handle my kids at every bend in the road, in virtually every situation. It advocates attachment parenting and loving-guidance discipline, and also gives you a plethora of techniques and tells exactly when and how to use them (i.e. "everyday discipline" vs. bigger, more stubborn issues). He clarified the reality that family life is not just a mundane distraction--a family should have goals, a vision of where they are going in life, etc. He talks extensively about how all family members must have a solid rapport between them for discipline to be effective, for love to be felt, etc. He clarifies the question of spanking from both a spiritual and a scientific perspective. He goes into detail about how to handle the various stages of childhood, from loving the infant to "taming" the toddler to handling the teenager--gracefully. He outlines how to foster virtues, morals, a love for religion and a love for Jesus in your children; he tells how to make your family into the "domestic church" Pope John Paul calls it to be. I wouldn't even waste time with any other parenting or discipline book--this one more than covers all your questions and worries. I refer to it at least once a week, and it gives me the guidance I need to be an effective yet loving parent to my kids. It wil literally change your outlook on family life; it will give you new hope and make parenting a truly gratifying experience. The title couldn't be more appropriate--now I really have the information I need to raise "perfect" kids! If you REALLY unconditionally love your children and want them to be the best they can be, you will be thrilled to have this book!

Should be required reading for every parent
Whether you're Catholic or not, if you are a parent you will benefit tremendously from this book. I'm a Catholic parent and I'm really thankful that someone took the time and trouble to organize the vast plethora of parenting techniques out there so that it is easy to see their place within the structure of a Catholic parenting paradigm. The author is very knowledgeable of both scripture and church doctrine and explains their relevance to raising children. The step by step techniques for dealing with the various stages of a person's maturation are excellent. He also has little quizzes that you can use to help elucidate the areas where your parent-child relationship may need help. He has a superb treatise on why spanking is not a suitable discipline technique. I can't say enough about the excellent blend of philosophy, practical application and religion that the author has put together in this book. He is an organizational genius. Read this book!

So faithful and practical!
This book is great! I love the way it integrates authentic Church teaching with really practical parenting advice. I only got it two weeks ago, and the techniques are already making a huge differences in my childrens' behavior. I really look to it on those days when I'm not sure what to do to keep things on track. I only wish I knew about it sooner! I know what I'm giving as gifts to my mother's support group. Thanks for this great resource.

Superb starting point
If you have some knowledge of the guitar, you can play the chords, you're learning your scales, but you don't know where to get started with playing lead--this book is probably the best place to start I know of. You start out learning some very simple little licks, and then after you've learned a few, you find them strung together into a 12-bar blues--and suddenly, miraculously, for maybe 20 seconds, you find that you can actually play lead guitar! How cool is that? (All examples are played fast, then slow, like REALLY slow.)

As the book progresses, the leads get more complex, and therefore more difficult to learn. But there is nothing here that is of the advanced caliber. I don't mean that as a criticism--this stuff SHOULD be aimed at the beginner to intermediate. But the stuff isn't all wimpy, straight pentatonic stuff either. It isn't boring. You will learn some really cool-sounding music from the book, played all over the fretboard. And there is PLENTY to learn.

At the same time, the book won't take you very far beyond the introductory lead playing stage. So don't expect this book to make you the next BB King. And the coverage of theory is minimal at best, as it is in all such books that promise to teach you everything there is to know about lead guitar.

About the biggest complaint I can come up with is that I found the guy's English (or Australian?) accent (a rural accent, I believe?) vaguely annoying after a while. But if that's the most you can complain about, you know you've gotten a good value. In fact, this book would be worth at least twice what they're charging for it.

As a final note, raw beginners could probably make use of this book, but it would be very slow going. Advanced players would be bored by it. It is targeted directly at players who have taken the time to learn pentatonic scales fairly well, understand basic chord progressions, but don't have a clue how to make interesting solos.

My favorite book/value purchase so far.
As someone who is trying to learn guitar at the age of 37, I want to just have some fun. This book does that, as it has you building a 12 bar blues solo for each pattern. HINT: Just practice going up and down each pattern very well before tackling each set of licks. Highly recommend! Oh yeah the included CD to hear everything is priceless.

Deep Intermediate Blues (and Rock) Instruction
Peter Gelling continues on from "Blues Lead Guitar Method". He gives you the basic blues scales with the blue notes added. He teaches a song with each scale (which helps to commit the scale to memory). He also covers arpeggios, and various rhythms. The book introduces a few new techniques along with some really good signiture licks from blues masters. The book takes a little work, but it is fun an will improve your style.

A Concerted Approach to the Fight Against Terrorism
After the initial shock caused by the 09/11/2002 terrorist attacks on the United States, the need to better understand the mechanisms of terrorism, and above all the existing tools to fight it, has become more pressing and has been felt throughout the globe. As rarely a day goes by without some media reference to a possible or an actual terrorist attack, awareness of the available international instruments to fight terrorism is the key to understanding current affairs and the world of today. In the book Terrorism and the International Legal Order, Peter J. van Krieken shares with the reader his in-depth knowledge over international legal institutions.

In spite the complexity of the subject, the reader will be guided through some of the major legal instruments - UN and non-UN, international and regional - available in the fight against terrorism with relative ease. The detailed table of contents also offers the reader the possibility of glancing through the whole spectrum quickly and choosing, for example, to learn more precisely about the role of the UN or of some of its bodies (Security Council, General Assembly, ECOSOC, Trusteeship Council, ICJ) in the fight against international terrorism. Before the end of the book, the reader will come to grasp that these present instruments only need to have their effectiveness increased and that, with enhanced cooperation, they can serve as efficient tools in the fight against international terrorism.

Terrorism and the International Legal Order is recommended reading for anyone who wishes to understand more clearly and in a very concrete manner the challenges of today's world in the face of terrorism. It is equally recommended to all of those who remain shocked and unconditionally condemn terrorist acts of any kind. It is also recommended to those who realize that civil liberties cannot exist without safety and that at times concessions on the former must be made. Finally, to those rightly concerned about the balance between civil liberties and security, this book is a serious way of understanding the dangers posed by terrorism and possibly a new way to look at the balancing of both.

In-depth analysis of international law and terrorism
Terrorism and the International Legal Order is an excellent compilation of international law regarding terrorism. The book reviews important UN resolutions passed before and after September 11th, it presents definitions of terrorism throughout recent history in order to determine exactly what terrorism is, and it supplies information on the treatment of the topic by several UN bodies. Further, Van Kieken explores the connection between international terrorism and migration (laws), and refers to several cases while putting them in an international law context. The book also includes most relevant texts of UN conventions, resolutions, etc.
Overall, this book provides a clear and concise insight into the legal aspects regarding (international) terrorism. It is especially recommended to those who have a previous understanding of international law/institutions/relations, without which this volume might prove somewhat challenging to read. Also, it is very useful for students of international law/relations, or anyone attempting to grasp these issues surrounding terrorism.

Excellent reading
I find this book to be an excellent addition for those who already have some sort of background or knowledge of international relations and international law etc. It looks into certain aspects of terrorism - examning certain cases. By looking to each organ of the United Nations and its role within combatting terrorism, I find it to be of great use to my studies. The author not only offers facts and documentation - he deeply examines the issues at hand with reference to those facts and documents. By doing so he clarifies somewhat difficult to read UN documents and non-UN documents - explaining them in clear english. Not only did I add to my knowledge of international relations, I learned a lot of new things as well.
