Travels with the Fossil Hunters
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (1900)
Author: Peter J. Whybrow

Average review score:

Palaeontologists - even more fun than dinosaurs!
This is a hard book to classify - a collection of personal essays by British palaeontologists (hence the spelling)describing their experiences as they travel to many countries to pursue their work. It's a sort of old-fashioned travel book about modern science.

They go to Asia, Africa, Antarctica, all over the planet, looking for whatever kind of fossils they happen to specialize in; but, though there's some information about their work, they are really writing about their travels - and what great stories! They get shot at, eat strange foods, camp out, meet strange and friendly peoples, and see wonders of nature and amazing ancient works of man.

Paleontology is a fascinating subject, no question, but are the scientists themselves really all such charming swashbucklers? After reading this book, I like to think so.

The book is beautifully illustrated with many color photos of the scientists, the places, the people, and the discoveries.

The Treasure Chest: Stories Illustrated with Contemporary Woodcuts (Penguin Classics)
Published in Paperback by Penguin Books Ltd (25 October, 2001)
Authors: Johann Peter Hebel and John Hibberd
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

For afficianados of plot
Hebel wrote an almanac called The Treasure Chest in the early 19th century; these stories are culled from that. They are works of genius: Kafka declared one of his stories "the most wonderful story in the world," and with good reason. Hebel combines fantastic plots -- worthy of Dashiell Hammet -- with deep and melancholy themes (and also light-hearted ones). You'll gasp at some of the cleverness: cleverness of an order to rival Shakespeare and Ben Jonson, but worked out in very short, very entertaining stories. It's a great book.

Tribute to Peter Bauer: Including a Conversation With Peter Bauer & Tributes by John Blundell, Et Al

Tribute to a Great Champion of the Poor
Almost a year ago Lord (Peter) Bauer died, 86 years young. The Classical Liberal world lost one of it's leading lights and yet at the same time, across the world millions of people do not know that one of their strongest supporters is no longer with us.

Peter Bauer was a man in a million. His work on the economics of less developed countries led him to the belief that the best policies to help the people in those countries are those that allow freedom and enterprise to flourish or as Adam Smith would have it, to truck, barter and exchange. Sounds reasonable? Well perhaps now but back in the 1960s and '70s this was akin to heresy. Bauer's voice was as one crying in the wilderness and he was denigrated throughout the economics profession. Bauer committed what was thought to be a cardinal sin in those days which was to argue the case against aid, a case which has now largely been won.

Bauer persisted with his view and his work despite the enormous pressure of the opposition and in the end he prevailed. He dissented against much of the orthodoxy of the corpus of knowledge of development economics especially in the area of population. He supported the individual against the state and recognised the capacity of the individual to make the right decisions for themselves and for their families not just in the short term but also in the medium and long terms and would make better decisions that the governments might.

Peter Bauer was a brave man and not just intellectually but also physically, standing firm in the face of strong opposition from student protests against his carefully thought out views.

Not a man to suffer fools, gladly or otherwise, Peter Bauer was a consumate seeker of truth, a scholar and a gentleman who would think the unthinkable and use his finely honed skills to substantiate his conclusions.

This is a wonderful little book which plays a fitting tribute to a remarkable thinker who deserves greater recognition inthe pantheon of the great economists than he has achieved so far. Any serious student of developing countries should invest in a copy of this book as an introduction to the thought of an economic colossus.

World's Easiest Ultrasound Learning Material
If you are looking for some sort of "Ultrasound for Dummies", this is it! Forget about all difficult and thick physics and theories. If you open up this book, nice pictures of actual scanning with clinical images will be served for you. Instead of imagination how you get these images, you really can see how you have locate and move your transducer to get the images which is very important to make a diagnosis.

I had a chance to discuss with one luminary doctor about easy ultrasound learning material. This is the book which we have chosen for.

Very practical and benefitial for your study or daily practice.

Other benefit?

"It is very handy" ^^

Explains asthma in simple language and a positive way
My daughter who is 7 has recently been diagnosed with moderate ashtma. (as have I about 6 months ago). The respiratory tech gave Hannah this book after she had some breathing tests. She took it to school and read it to her class to share information about asthma. She sometimes gets a bit down about having it, but I explain to her that allergies are usually the cause or trigger (cat dander, dogs and dust mites for her and me!) and we try to take our puffers and medicine to keep us healthy.

This book shows Bravo the horse who used to be out of breath and not able to run fast, doing great and winning the race when he takes care of his asthma. A very positive book and has helped our family in learning how to live with asthma.

What's Wrong With the Criminal Justice System: Ideology, Politics, and the Media
Published in Paperback by Anderson Pub Co (1999)
Authors: Alida V. Merlo and Peter J. Benekos
Amazon base price: $31.95
Used price: $20.00
Average review score:

The Politics of Crime
Merlo and Benekos present some eyeopening facts aboout how the media, ideology and politics inflence how we make decisions regarding crime and justice. These decisions affect the police, courts and corrections in various ways. Especially interesting was how the media picks a theme(ie school violence) and then looks to sensationalize these stories to make it seem as though we are experiencing an epidemic. The media, as Benekos and Merlo descibe, can and do distort reality. School violence actually peaked in 1994 and has gone down every year since then.

Benekos and Merlo argue for a balanced approach to establishing policy-not the either/or apporoach that has fueled the "What to do about crime" question for many years.

I highly reccommend it to students of criminal justice, policy makers, and administrators within the criminal justice field.
