Psychodrama with Trauma Survivors
Some valuable information. As expected, uneven quality among articles. Some authors are stars; others are willingly lost in intergalactic dust clouds of jargon. Editors take a sink-or-swim approach to authors. For the non-specialist, the incomplete index (short on listings for particular items) and absence of a badly needed glossary impair the book's usefulness. All the same, I read it and took notes.

A good overview of psychodrama and trauma
"Psychodrama with Trauma Survivors: Acting Out Your Pain" is a good overview of the current ways that the method of psychodrama is being used to treat survivors of trauma.

Some clinicians shy away from using experiential methods with survivors, particularly because the power of the method and its potential to produce regression. Yet many clinicians know that talk therapy, while providing symptomatic relief, often does not get to the deep healing that many survivors are seeking. When used responsibly and safely, experiential methods like psychodrama are better able to address experiences which are stored in the unconscious cubbyholes of our being that can hardly be accessed with verbal methods.

The book documents the impact of a variety of kinds of trauma -- war, physical and sexual abuse, significant loss, torture, addiction and traffic accidents among others -- and shows the various approaches of psychodramatists from around the world.

Of special interest are the chapters by French psychologist Anne Ancelin Schutzenberger, who has researched hidden transmission of trauma from generation to generation, and by co-editor Kate Hudgins, an American psychologist, who has developed the Therapeutic Spiral Model that identifies a number of inner roles that solidify within survivors as a result of the trauma.

Innovative work with juvenile and adult sexual offenders is also documented, as well as treatment with secondary victims of trauma, like family members of combat veterans and psychotherapists themselves.

Psychodrama is not a simple method so this information is less of a manual for clinicians who are not versed in this field. However, it offers a great window of possibilities for clinicians and others seeking new options for treatment.

Speed With Style The autobiography of Peter Revson
Heir to the Revlon fortune, and with a movie star mother, Peter lived a charmed life but was killed at the height of his career. Written with Leon Mandel (current publisher of AutoWeek) this book follows Revson as he wins Grands Prix on 2 continents, races at Indy, and finds time for lots of friends and ladies in the racing world. A real guy who lets it all hang out and tells it like it is, or was.

The Best Driver Biography Ever Written
I have read many bios on auto racing drivers and this one remains my all-time favorite. Peter was a remarkable person in a grueling and demanding profession. Leon Mandel writes of Peter with wit, charm, compassion, and a remarkable insight into the demands placed on a driver by sponsor, teams, family and friends. We get glimpses of the interaction between crew and driver, driver and owner, etc. Peter is gone too soon but this bio stands as a tribute to his skill and bravery. It is also a fine piece of writing and Leon Mandel deserves much praise for this excellent work.

Very bare edition of two great complex concertos.
The music is fantastic, being the most popular concerto repertoire of Russian origin, but the edition assumes the reader some sort of Russian professional. Right away one notices that there are very few fingerings noted, and altogether I have found maybe one editor's note on execution in the entirety of the two concertos. The edition contains no introduction to the music, no informative synopsis of any sort, no helpful background history on the composer's methods, reasonings or motivation for the music to aid the interpreter, nothing at all, in fact, but the notes themselves. Not even a photograph of Rachmaninoff or Tchaikovsky to identify the name with. This lack of support for the performer is considerably below the standards of any serious edition. Unless one is well-prepared with some amount of collected knowledge of Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky, and with the experience of having listened to each of these concertos, the edition will leave you stranded. But, then again, it is great music one must have.

2 Great Russian Concertos
A must to an aspiring virtuoso's repertoire. Rachmaninoff was the peak of piano style and complexity, his first big hit being the second piano concerto. Tchaikovsky wrote a magnificent virtuosic piano concerto included in this book. You can hear the opening bars almost anywhere even today. From the lengthy, intimidating cadenza of the first movement, to the last over-hand octave run, it is a beatiful piece of piano literature. If you are serious about the piano, you must have this volume.

Travels With My Briefcase: Around the World - On Expenses
Published in Paperback by Little Brown & Co (Pap) (1996)
Author: Peter Biddlecombe
Amazon base price: $12.95
Used price: $7.99

A delightful update on the author's first book
Peter Biddlecombe has carved out a niche writing silly, amusing travel essays about his business travels, seasoned with the occasional profound observation of why some countries are hives of prosperity while others are starving. He is not among the politically correct -- brace yourself for mother-in-law jokes and snide remarks about local customs. But at his best, he's amusing and informative. At his worst, he's just obnoxious.

This volume has a distinct Franco-African theme, which seems to be Biddlecombe's area of greatest expertise, and where he veers away from frivolity and comes nearest to being profound. The book is in some respects an update of his first volume, 'French Lessons in Africa.' Of 19 essays, five are from francophone Africa, four are from southeast Asia, three from South America, and a sprinkling of others to round out the book.

An interesting and funny narrative, though rather conceited
The book reads very well, with the author using an easy style. The situations are all real and show the fun one can have travelling. I felt many of the observations and quips about characters and events were too ethno-centric (Biddlecome is British) and conceited, despite the authors extensive travels.

Overall, a great book to read, and very enjoyable.

Cooke 7th Edition
I have used the Cooke text in teaching electronics math for a few years now. The treatment is thorough if a bit technical. If you want a good math book without electronics theory look elsewhere. The electronics is rigorous but the book is a good companion to Grob's Basis Electronics.

Great book for the novice trader/investor
This book by Peter Alexander will provide valuable insight, information, advice and guidance to the new or aspiring trader in either stocks or commodities. The author is knowledgeable and well qualified to offer such guidance, being an experienced stock and currency trader, and a long-time developer of financial software.

The title strikes me as misleading. Although substantial coverage is devoted to issues relevant to trading by computer, the book also covers many other topics which the new trader will find to be helpful as well. A more apt title might have been The Complete Guide to Issues of Concern to the New Trader.

Important issues covered include commission costs, liquidity, volatility, markets (and exchanges) to avoid, the relative pros and cons of daytrading versus position trading, money management, technical analysis and basic trading system design.

Since the book was written in 1997 it does not cover the current trends in online trading or the newest financial websites.

The author's style of writing is free flowing, interesting, and easy to understand. His colorful phrases and metaphors are, in places, reminiscent of Elder's Trading for a Living. I recommend the book to new traders looking for guidance and useful information in the subject areas covered.

Beyond the Next Wave with Scenario Planning: Imagining the Next Generation of Customers

Introduction to Futurism
I have found some of the information in this book very valuable in terms of obtaining an awareness of issues/factors that are likely to have a significant impact on our future in the next 20 years.

The book is primarily targeted to businesses wanting to undertake scenario planning/long term strategy development.

However I believe a great part of the book will be of high value to anyone interested in visualizing the near future for whatever purpose. (Personally I am using the information to brainstorm potential business ideas)

This book is of a very general nature addressing a wide range of issues including:

Internationalization/Globalization of Business. Need for change in customer research approaches. (eg Generation X, "The Solitaries") Changes in consumer tastes and profiles. Future of national governments. Impacts of an ageing population. Gap between rich and poor. Growing importance of China and India as commercial powers. Change in the nature of work- shift towards contractual-based activity rather than employment, shift from office to home. Population Growth. Resource issues (energy, food, water) Physical environment issues.

(The author then also discusses how to undertake scenario planning)

Another very similar book that you may be interested in is Hamish McRae's "The World in 2020".

Break The Rules
I've always wanted to know each of the secrets behind writing with a more pronounced sense of power and clarity. In less than one week, Beyond The Rules taught me how to write with fire and a veteran sense of wit. A writer's personality is based on his or her level of word choice and style. The ability to convert these talents to never before seen levels is truly what makes Beyond The Rules a must-read for anyone looking to develop both a unique and original approach to writing.

A good guide
An interesting, funny, and well researched book about American culture. It certainly taught me a lot about it. I would recommend this one, instead of one like Culture Shock USA by Esther Wanning - which is the opposite.
