An Anticipation of Science
This book is an innovative metaphilosophical work. Its main thesis is, that philosophy might be a kind of anticipation of science. The author manages to develope this thesis without falling into a scientist or positivist view of the nature of philosophy. He achieves this aim by defining science as a „consensualizable public knowledge", following John Ziman. By contrast, philosophy must be a „non-consensualizable public inquiry", and this isn't a scientist or positivist view. The idea that philosphy is a conceptual analysis is integrated to this general account: most of philosophy must be a conceptual analysis and a non-consensualizable inquiry anticipating science. As a systematic work, the book is a very fine argumentative achievement.

The Political Ecology of the Modern Peasant: Calculation and Community
Published in Hardcover by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (1994)
Authors: Les Anderson and Leslie E. Anderson
Amazon base price: $49.95
Used price: $29.72
Average review score:

Political Ecology is an intellectual masterpiece!
Anderson convincingly argues for a new paradigm in the study of Peasant Politics and in the process ably fords the often sterile debate between individualists and communitarians as exemplified by the followers of James Scott and Samuel Popkin. Combining intricate methodology and a broad historical/cultural sweep, Anderson uses the best conceptual tools in the social scientist's kit to arrive at a theory which is both statistically grounded and socially informed. The peasants of this work are more than mere individualists: they are also family men and women, citizens and friends. By placing this nexus, rather than a single aspect of it, at the center of our conceptual focus, Anderson has immeasurably enhanced our understanding of the subtly nuanced lives of peasants as they grapple with primordial forces as well as modern challenges. This book should be required reading for all, regardless of regional specialization, who aspire to a greater understanding of the peasantry. Specialists in development and academics alike will find themselves enlightened by Anderson's approach. While there are a few points, particularly in the methodology appendix where Anderson's formulation of statistical indicators becomes muddy and the overall clarity is momentarily lost, overall the book is cogent and highly relevant

Gem of a book!
As a first generation Portuguese-Canadian, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and would highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in Portuguese history, or the history of immigrant groups. One need not have a background in the subject matter as the work is written in a very accessible and readable manner.

Its essays are varied, and gives one a thorough introduction and understanding of the challenges and issues faced by the Portuguese upon their arrival in Canada. One interesting point of note is that it includes a section on the immigrant group in both Montreal and Toronto and how the groups have adapted to 2 very distinct communitities.

Although a relatively "new" immigrant group to Canada, the Portuguese have now an excellent piece of work commemorating and chronicling their place in Canada's social context. Kudos to the editors: Victor da Rosa and Carlos Texeira!

Feminism wasn't just N.O.W. and Betty Friedan
This book contains the work of two of the most astute writers on women, gender and power within the Marxist tradition. Unlike most works, this text engages with gender relations as they specifically take shape under capitalism, as shaped by the capital-labor relation.

Clear, easy to read, and engaging, this book takes a very different approach to sex and class from most other feminist works. This was the early theoretical expression of the section of the Women's Movement demanding Wages for Housework and it contains a biting critique not simply of sexual oppression, but of the capital-labor relation.

If you read no other work on sexual relations from a Marxist perspective, read this. then get Fortunati's book The Arcane of Reproduction, which develops these arguments in novel ways.

Pragmatic Idealism, Canadian Foreign Policy, 1945-1995
The book provides an overview of the Canadian role in international affairs in the post-war era. After reading the book I realised that Pragmatic Idealism dispels some of the myths surrounding Canadian foreign policy and underlines the distinctiveness of Canada's place in world politics. Drawing upon philosophy and political science theory, Professor Melakopides develops a new perspective of international politics that contrasts with the realist mainstream. He proves that there is an remarkable continuity underlying Canadian foreign policy in the post war era. Professor Melakopides defines Canadian internationalism as "pragmatic idealism," a balanced synthesis of idealism and pragmatism, and demonstrates concretely how it reflects the principles, interests, and values of Canada's mainstream political culture. Based on Canada's record in the areas of peacekeeping and peacemaking, arms control and disarmament, foreign development assistance, and human rights, Professor Melakopides reveals that at the heart of Canadian foreign policy we can find the concepts and the practice of moderation, communication, mediation, co-operation, caring, and sharing. I think this book holds the key to understanding the principles and trends that have defined the Canadian role in international relations over the last four decades. I find that the book is a must read for the international relations students and its format and concepts are very useful for the students and the instructors who work in the area of International Relations.

A very specialized and useful procedure book
It is a very specialized book that covers in great detail inventory making procedures for biodiversity which includes all fungi taxonomical groups existing in a protected area of Costa Rica.

Even though the method selection foundations are not present, the names of the people who helped in the elaboration of methodology design are (all of them are specialists in different areas of fungi study), as well as their addresses, making it possible for the reader to contact them if he or she needs to know more about their work.

The book shows the inventory procedure job under a very interesting point of view. Not only does it limit to field technical aspects, but also considers management aspects, such as execution problems and function manuals of the researchers. It also includes a budget design and an integrated view of the whole study.

This book is doubtlessly very useful and maybe unique because there are very few publications related to fungi monitoring methods in tropical zones until now.

There is a track on this cd, a samba, that just drives me up the wall. I don't even know the name of it but I caught it off of Radio Canada on my little boom box tape. I can't wait to get the whole track. 1,000 % recommended for hot latin music lovers.

The definitive guide on a Costa Rican Paddling
This book is is slightly dated - a revision is in the works from what I can tell of Web based updates. It is still the most comprehensive and detailed guide available to both kayakers and rafters (although it is written primarily for kayakers). Dozens of rivers are covered as well as many of their indvidual rapids, peculiarities, specifications, and best times to run. By teaming a scientist up with Raphael Gallo (paddler and President of one of the top river outfitters in Costa Rica - Rios Tropicales) you get a balance of technical information as well as practical information with some good photos to boot. This book is mandatory if you are a serious paddler who wishes to explore Costa Rica.

Basic Image processing book for beginners
The book is mostly discussed about shape representation that used for image processing or computer vision. It has good explanation regarding basic mathematical concepts with very simple numerical example for each concept. The explanation about image descriptors is clear for self study. The book however is not recommended for people who has knowledge already about the basic image processing and computer vision because not so much new things can be found in this book that are not explained in other similar books.
