Lonely Planet Costa Rica Pack
Published in Paperback by Lonely Planet (2000)
Amazon base price: $27.94
Average review score:

A friend and I had made a choice to travel abroad but just weren't sure where to go or what first steps we should take in choosing a destination we both agreed upon. Pondering upon pondering we both agreed and concluded that we wanted a place that was different, 3rd world, and tropical with a history of having a warm climate. So with this main clue, we headed for the nearest BORDERS bookstore and rummaged up and down the travel section reading everything and anything and educating ourselves on different tropical locations. Considering our budget and activities interests and scenic interests, we decided COSTA RICA would be the place to meet our most enjoyable and worthwhile needs. Upon choosing the book, it was a toss up between 3 (one being the Lonely Planet guide)... We chose "Lonely Planet" to be our book guide morely due to its hip nature and background and its cool entourage of excitement seeking followers, travelers and backpackers who own at least on of these unique line of travel guides. Within the trip, we found that no other book had ever been so accurate. From places to go, venues to eat, places to stay, activities to do, discounts to look out for and people to meet; no other travel book we've owned has ever been so accurate. Also we had the chance to learn a great deal of history about the country from the book before we went; could be an excellent pasttime activity on the plane. (Found out that we knew more about the country then the occupants who lived there.) The book is in most, "detail-accurate." The book even survived the humid drenches of the rainforest of Manuel Antonio (a must see). The book is still in an acceptable condition (thanks to its improved binding! I display it on my room shelf along with the souvenirs and pictures of my trip. A shrine would be a good way to describe it. An EXCELLENT book, an EXCELLENT trip, full of EXCELLENT memories!!!!! I've also purchased the LONELY PLANET guide to MORROCCO. and YES i have made that trip... but that is another travel story on it's own full that is also full of more exciting memories!!! I have constructed a shrine for that as well. haha

Los cuarenta dias de 1948 : la guerra civil en Costa Rica
Published in Unknown Binding by Editorial Costa Rica (2000)
Amazon base price: $9.00
Average review score:

This book by Juan Diego López takes a fresh look at Costa Rica's civil war of 1948. Having been born after the war was over, López is able to see this important period of Costa Rican history with the advantage and objectivity of a historian who is not mired by the deep emotions of those who took an active part in this short but bloody war which established the longest running democracy in Latin America.
"Los 40 días de 1948" takes a serious look at the civil war based on scientific principles where Lopez makes and analysis of it based on the interaction of the political and the military aspects of the conflict as it develops day by day. The structure of this essay, packed with historiographical data, for the first time allows the reader to make sense of the anecdotal information that had until now been the only information available to the reader.
This book is a must read for all those interested in understanding Costa Rica and how it came to be.

This survey of Italy's traditional recipes packs in hundreds of traditional Italian recipes collected from both north and south, reflecting Pasqualina Rio Gregory's personal travels through the country as well as her family heritage. Her favorites comprising Mangia Bene represent the range of Italian dishes, with over sixty color photos of Italy capturing the Italian countryside. It's not the photos which are the standout here, though: it's the recipes, which blend both old styles with new creations speciifc to different regions.

Being a Student/admirer of Carmelo Mesa-Lago, I have seen his share of great works on Cuba and Latin America. None however compare to this one. This book has information that only Mesa-Lago, the formost Cuban economist outside of the island, could present and analyze. He breaks down the economies of Cuba, Chile, and Costa Rica and explains the path to development that each country has taken. IF you are a student of economics, international relations, political science... or just intrested in Latin American issues, this book is a must!!!

D'Costa uses such strong systematic logic throughout, that it is impossible to, (1) ignore his outstanding contribution to trinitarian theology and/verse religious pluralism;(2)refute the logic (based within the Catholic tradition) that he sustains throughout. Having a (catholic)theology degree, i can recommened this book without hesitation.

The Miami-Illinois Language (Studies in the Native Languages of the Americas Series)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Nebraska Pr (2003)
Amazon base price: $75.00
Average review score:

Compiled by professional linguist David J. Costa, The Miami-Illinois Language is an exhaustive grammatical reconstruction of the language spoken by the Miami and the Illinois Native Americans -- dialects of the Algonquian language family. The populations of the speakers of these languages were decimated by warfare and disease; now, The Miami-Illinois Language pieces together a complex technical map of how people once communicated, with information from surviving stories, historical sources, comparison with related languages and more. A seminal work of impeccable scholarship, The Miami-Illinois Language is very highly recommended for inclusion into Native American Studies in general, and Native American Linguistics reference collections in particular.

Vanina Costa's book on the Musee D'Orsay is the kind of book that makes you interested in something that you were only vaguely acquainted with before you read it. 12 paintings by twelve 19th century painters featured at the Musee D'Orsay are analyzed for their style and content, with a sort of expert detail that you would not expect to see in a guidebook to a museum. The one regret I have is that Renoir was not included in this survey, but we get to learn about Seurat, Courbet and Vuillard as well as Monet, Manet, Van Gogh , Degas, Cezanne and Gaughin. A really good read that should be made widely available to patrons of art museums across North America , Europe and Japan and elsewhere in Asia.

Naming Cats and Dogs

It was such a good book. I just got a new puppy and i wasnt sure what to name it. After, I read this book I knew exactly what to name it!! It helped a lot!

This is such a great idea for all the animal lovers in the world. I own 4 dogs, 6 cats, 3 goats and six horses soon to be eight! I only wish this book had been there when I had the job of naming all my friends!
This is also a great gift idea for giving to friends that intend to adopt a pet in the future.
It was fun reading all the different and sometimes unusual names, and the descriptive messages after each name............names do make a difference! (I've already picked one for the future!)

I found this collection (with essays by Cookie Mueller and Guido Costa) to be absolutely mesmerizing. The photographs are so compelling, you can almost smell the life and exuberance of these people, so aimless and free, and so close to the underbelly of society. Highly recommended. Especially touching and true are Cookie Mueller's short essays, well worth the purchase.

Lazear has once again created an excellent resource with his book Pathways of Learning. This book takes ideas from Seven Ways of Knowing, and expands on them. The book contains fantastic reproducibles to be used in the classroom. It also includes reflective checklists for teachers.
