Review by Homer H. Hickam
Cape Hatteras: America's Lighthouse is a treasure to all of us who love what is arguably the most famous lighthouse in the world. The authors should be commended for writing not only a fascinating look into the past and future of this great beacon, but also a damn fine tale of passion, perseverance, intrigue, romance, grand schemes, utter calamities, and vast heroism.

This is an important bit of American history but it is not a dry text. This book is a real page-turner, one that will illuminate your mind as surely as the Hatteras lighthouse on a frightening, dark sea. Like the mariners which once depended on the light to skirt a dangerous coast, after you finish reading this book, you will be grateful for the experience.

Book presents human side of Princeton's career and loss.
This book delves into the human element that makes up any warship. It starts from the Navy's conception of a class of light carriers, retrofitted from light crusiers, that would serve as a stop-gap measure until the larger Essex Class carriers could be brought on line. The resulting developement was a small, but fast, carrier that was staffed by battle experienced officers and men, many from the USS Hornet, that quickly gained the attention and admiration of the Navy's top brass. From the energy filled first hand accounts of dog fights, related by the participants themselves, to the heroric effort to save the ill fated ship during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the authors present never before printed insight into both the ship and the crew. The book dispells many previous inaccuracies concerning the source of the explosions that would dome not only the Princeton, but would also claim hundreds of victims that made up the crew of the USS Birmingham. These first hand accounts were collected over the years by interviewing the participants at veteran reunions and recollections of Mr. Bradshaw, himself a crew member of the USS Princeton. From the combat wizzardry of VF-27 (Catsmouth) to the daring deed of Ens. Burgess, the reader will truly enjoy this book. I give it a thumbs up all the way!

The definitive text on zoning and land use.
I give the book a 9 out of 10 only because it needs updating. The fields of zoning and land use change daliy. In the four years which I have used this book in graduate courses in land use law, many new issues arisen and new cases have been decided. However, the book is still the best single volume on the topic and should be required reading for all zoning and land use professsionals.

A Great Resource for Caregivers!
I was fortunate to hear Thomas Rodgerson give a talk at an interfaith training course on caregiving. I was so moved and inspired by his comments that I ran right out and bought this book, which expands on many of the things he said during his talk. Being a natural rescuer type, I have always had a tendency to reach out to hurting people wherever I meet them, and this book has provided me with some invaluable tools in doing so. I've turned to it again and again as a reference during my dealings with people in crisis or just people who need someone to talk to. A good subtitle for this book could be, "How to Listen," and I wish it could be required reading for caregivers of all types. It is especially useful in being of help to people who are depressed, and I have used the things I learned from the book in depression forums on the Web with very good results. The best thing I got from reading this book is an understanding of how to get out of the way and let God work through me in other peoples' lives. Now I don't feel so much like I need to "fix" anyone or say just the right thing or take responsibility for saving someone. The book is written from a Christian perspective, but the methods described in this book would work for anyone. Read this book along with Henry Nouwen's "Wounded Healer" for indispensable help if you find yourself in a position of caring for those who hurt (and don't we all end up in that position at some point in our lives?)

Cerebral Cortex Mystery Solved!
Chapter 4 of this book is the pot of gold: A concrete, detailed description of how the cerebral cortex works. Thinking relies upon an operation which could be called confabulation (in the chapter it is called concensus building). THIS IS NOT REASONING (at least in any classical sense). Yet, because the simple kind of knowledge used (antecedent support probabilities) is exhaustive, concensus building yields excellent conclusions. This cortical theory also shows why AI has failed: reasoning is too difficult and requires too much knowledge of an expensive type. Cortex gets by with a much simpler type of knowledge (which only concerns pairs of object and action attributes, not n-tuples) which, while it is needed in huge quantities, is easy to obtain. An implication of this corticl theory is that we can now proceed to develop successful AI by adopting this cortical design. The theory is illustrated by means of computer thinking experiments that yield compelling results (and which readers can replicate).
