Too Brief to Learn from
When I started training in Family practice I searched for a large reference book to study from. I choose this text because it was written so well. The Language is direct, the explanations are clear and the advice is well founded. Now that I am in training the book is not as helpful as I hoped. Most of the time I find the treatment on any given topic too shallow for what I have to learn. I belive this is the result of a compromise between size and completness. I now wish I had saved my money and bought three textbooks - Harrison, Williams and Nelson as opposed to trying to find one book to cover all of internal medicine, obstetrics, and pediatrics.

Excellent practical reference for nurse practitioners
This book is designed in a practical and understandable approach to family practice. It is an excellent text and a comprehensive reference especially useful for a nurse practitioner/graduate student in family practice. Not only does it provide treatment and management of common medical conditions but also includes psychosocial aspects of caring for clients and their families.

How to Choose a Bible Version: Making Sense of the Proliferation of Bible Translations

simplified introductory overview - 3 stars plus
Robert L. Thomas has put together a bit of information on the modern translations of the Bible in popular use today (& some which are not popularly used), as well as the history of the English Bible, to present a readable, if not overly sophisticated, introduction to translations and the textual criticism underlying them .

The historical information is on a grade-school level, but the background information on the King James translation committee is a welcome entry to a large void of common misunderstanding and ignorance of the origins of this revered version, and a real plus to the value of the book.

The author leans toward a literal translation, and rightly so, in this reviewer's opinion. A helpful chart lists several translations in use today and their degree of literalness or looseness in conforming to the original language texts.

Unfortunately, the section on theological bias gives little clarification of it's legitimate role in translating, and promotes that idea that one should shop around for a translation to buttress one's own theological bent. Translations that veer from the author's own pet theological bias are clearly denigrated for doing so, even if their renderings are philologically accurate.

In line with the title, the author throughout promotes the notion that everyone should pick the ONE Bible translation that will be the basis of their faith. Oddly, it is not suggested that a Christian might regularly use and study several different translations, and no encouragement is given toward the use of an interlinear translation with a lexicon.

Still, for readability, for the information on the King James translation committee, for the useful chart on literalness vs looseness (I find myself consulting it frequently, as I build my collection of different translations), and for valuing literalness in a translation, I rate this book a 3-plus, and recommend it as a starting point for someone desiring to embark on the road to the study of the modern Bible translation, and the history of its textual transmission.

Concise, scholarly. Allows one to make his/her own decision
Robert Thomas strikes me as a true scholar. There is no sarcasm or condescending tone, just his honest yet learned opinion of the subject.(He favours the Alexandrian Text as opposed to the Textus Receptus, but readers usually have their minds made up on this beforehand anyway, and Thomas' opinion will not sway them one way or the other).
Note this is not a large book, only about 200 pages.
I couldn't believe there were no reviews of this book ,as it is well worth buying. I really like his summary reviews of many translations individualy.
I also recommend "Differences Between Bible Translations" by Gary, Zeolla, as well as "One Bible Only?" by Beacham and Bauder.

Mechanics of Solids
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Science/Engineering/Math (01 January, 1994)
Authors: Thomas J. Lardner and Robert R. Archer
Amazon base price: $98.12
Used price: $25.00

Adequate text for material strenghs..
This book is quite decent in explaining the material, and even has some good examples. The prose is a bit dry, but going to lectures on the subject should clear up any problems that you stumble upon. Worth keeping, and a good transitory book from statics.

Top Level text as usual
I own about 30 books in mechanics of materials (Also mechanics of solids and strength of materials) and am very happy to see an elegant text like this one. I'm not new to Lardner's books (I own An Introduction to the Mechanics of Solids) but this one surpass the previous title and present a more detailed materials and subjects supported by good numbers of examples. I'm also pleased with the level of problems given in this text (good number of changeling problems). On the top of that, answers to all problems are given in the text end and that will give the student the opportunity to benefit 100% from this book. I would like to see most mechanics books that deal the same subjects follow the steps of Lardner and Archer (in all aspects). If I give 5 stars to a book, it will be this one. I believe that all engineering students who are taking a course in Mechanics of Materials should have a look at this one, no matter what book is your text.

Ok, but I'd rather have it in paperback
Much of the Kirkus review was accurate, although, the point that New Agers will find little that resonates is probably the most compelling reason to buy this book. It isn't New Age mystical garbage---I wasn't levitating when I read this book.

Cayce is a fascinating character. Because of his deep faith, he wrestled with the concept of reincarnation and tries to reconcile a biblical explanation for what he experienced in the "life" readings. I found the final chapters of the book more interesting than much of the rest of the book. But it deserves better treatment overall than was given by Kirkus.

A rare glimpse into the mind of a great 20th-century mystic
Have you ever wondered what it might be like to see inside the mind of a great psychic? To be able to access information about people and places that reaches far beyond the physical dimension? Edgar Cayce's biography, expertly compiled by a professional journalist and editor from Cayce's never-before-published autobiographical notes, a personal diary, and lecture records, allows us just such a rare glimpse. Cayce (1877-1945) is the world's best-documented psychic, with over 14,000 verbatim transcripts of 'readings' on topics ranging from health concerns, reincarnation, astrology, spiritual development, earth change predictions, and other metaphysical topics catalogued in the Library of the Association for Research Enlightenment in Virginia Beach, VA.

Edgar Cayce is also known as the "Father of Holistic Medicine," whose unorthodox naturopathic cures, while helping many regain their health who had been given up as hopeless by the medical establishment, once led to his arrest on grounds of practising medicine without a licence.

In "My Life As a Seer," we get to know the Edgar Cayce who struggled with self-doubts regarding his psychic gift, and with concerns about the impact which the information from his readings might have on those who sought his counsel. We meet Cayce the family man, a photographer by profession, whose deep faith sees him through a series of defeats, including the destruction by fire of his studio; the closure, for lack of funds, of the hospital he had spent years trying to build; an eviction from his home; and physical injuries suffered while being the target of a humiliating attempt to expose him as a fraud. Through it all, Cayce remained a sincere and humble man,who was motivated not by fame nor by riches (which eluded him all his life), but by an overwhelming desire to serve God and help his fellow human beings.

"My Life As a Seer," as grandson Charles Thomas Cayce says in the foreword, represents "the first account of Edgar Cayce's life told completely in his own words. He does not dwell on all of the personal aspects of his life, but focuses primarily on those experiences that marked him since childhood as decidedly different from anyone else in his world."

Reading this fascinating book is the closest most of us will come to talking with Edgar Cayce in this lifetime.

Gives valuable information in one complete reference
Having previously read "Netware Professional Reference" by Karanjit Siyan, I hoped this edition would follow in the same light. This book is a real help for network administrators as it gives good examples and solutions of day to day problems.

This book is designed as a reference not a study guide. This is one of the best Intranetware books I have read to date.

I've used this book as a desk reference and it's great.
I have all of my "favorite places" marked for quick reference. The book is not organized to study for CNE exams. However, it has the information for Intranetware Network Administrators need for managing their networks. It contains a great index for quick look-ups.

Good for one thing.
This really is a begginer's book for origami. There isn't any "frog base" or "kite base" business. All steps are in the book and you need no previous knowledge of origami.

While this is a good book for beginners, intermediate and advanced talents can appreciate it for one reason; I used this book to create the complete chess set. It really is an impressive one (for origami, especially)!

That's all I've used this book for, and I don't think I'd pay for it unless I was a beginner (and even then, I may not). Getting it from the library was an ideal solution for me.

Make this your first origami book!

If you have never done origami before, or if it has been "years" since you last did, this is the book to get! While there are many "beginner's" origami books on the market, most are aimed at children, and most contain the same set of traditional models. Almost a "if you've seen one you've seen them all" thing.

But, as the commercial says:
"This isn't your parent's first origami book"

This book contains a collection of models by Robert Neale that haven't (to my knowledge) been published anywhere else. Which makes this a great book for collectors as well as beginners. Robert's models are simple to fold, but they contain a beauty that is not easy for an origami creator to capture. Thomas Hull's prose is funny and friendly, and makes me feel like he is looking over my shoulder helping me along.

My favorite models from this book are:
"Frog with a Big Mouth" - the first model I teach anyone new to origami - extremely simple, yet it captures the essence a frog marvelously!
"Da Wabbit We-wised" - much like the traditional rabbit, except lots better!
"Magic Ring" - changes from a frisbee with a hollow center into a spikey ring, and back again (and again, and again, and again, and... you get the idea!)

Two Folds Up!

Surprised
To me the book was written very well but their seemed to be something missing. I enjoyed reading about the accounts and mishappenings of the doctors and reading about how their court hearings went but in the same breath it would also have been much more appealing to me if the author would have given more detail about the actual war. However though thats just my opinion and it is still a good book.

Doctors in Trouble - Civil War Style
This is an excellent book for the Civil War medical reenactor. It traces the court marshals of Union Doctors for various offenses. The Authors not only provide the facts of the case but commentary as to the validity of the case against the specific doctor. Their search of the court cases during the Civil War provide new insights into the difficulties of the Union Doctors in caring for not only the wounded and sick of their own regiments but that of others. Many times the situations were out of the hands of the doctor that caused their downfall. Very readable in about 3-4 hours, it provides a perspective not provided by any other book to date. The authors' research and organization of the cases are to be complemented. I own over 200 books on Civil War medicine, this one is a must for the serious medical reader of the age.

breezy read
Only about a third of this volume is alloted for Monk's life--which is not bad; the rest is about the various recordings he made.

You get enough to wet your appetite. Makes you want to look for something more indepth, etc. Worth buying, though, as it is written by a genuine fan of Monk and the whole jazz scene. I don't regret getting it.

Brief but Comprehensive
This book is really good...especially if you own or plan to collect Monks music. The first part gives a brief(100 pages)bio(more expanded in gourse's "straight no chaser")a decent overveiw. The second part explains more or less "the Monk sound"his style in understandable terms(terms are also explained.) The third part is the best...monk on disk(and vinyl) and all sessions and personnel(all confirmed) in chronological order.Very excellent if you are obsessed like i am about this kind of stuff. It covers all this extremely well with much commentary. In depth even. If you got Monk on record this is a great reference. The focus on the music is its strong point.

Information for Decisions
My stereotype of accounting texts before taking an accounting class and using this book was they were all focused on the mechanics of accounting, which are dull to most students. This textbook, on the other hand, emphasizes the usefulness of accounting in the real world before delving into all the rules and regimentation. Therefore, some subjects, like debts and credits, receive less attention than they might deserve, especially for serious accounting students. The textbook's diagrams are quite colorful and useful, and its language is simple enough for your average student to understand. Hence, I recommend the book to any introductory-level business student, but I think that more serious accounting students might prefer a more advanced or in-depth textbook.
